Potocatalytic antifouling membrane with dense nano-TiO2 coating for efficient oil-in-water emulsion separation and self-cleaning

Fabrication of cobalt-iron Prussian blue analogues functionalized hybrid membranes for efficiently capturing Tl from water: Performance and mechanism

As trace levels of thallium (Tl) in water are lethal to humans and ecosystems, it is essential to exploit advanced technologies for efficient Tl removal. In response to this concern, an innovative composite membrane was developed, incorporating polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and featuring a dual-support system with polydopamine (PDA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI), along with bimetallic Prussian blue analogues (Co@Fe-PBAs) as co-supports. The composite membrane exhibited an exceptional Tl+-adsorption capacity (qm) of 186.1 mg g-1 when utilized for the treatment of water containing low concentration of Tl+ (0.5 mg⋅L-1). Transmission electron microscopy displayed the obvious Tl+ mapping inside the special hollow Co@Fe-PBAs crystals, demonstrating the deep intercalation of Tl+ via ion exchange and diffusion. The Tl+-adsorption capability of the composite membrane was not greatly affected by coexisting Na+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ as well as the tricky K+, indicating the excellent anti-interference. Co-doped PBAs enhanced ion exchange and intercalation of the composite membrane with Tl+ leading to excellent Tl+ removal efficiency. The composite membrane could efficiently remove Tl+ from thallium-contaminated river water to meet the USEPA standard. This study provides a cost-effective membrane-based solution for efficient Tl+ removal from Tl+-containing wastewater.

Activated carbon fibers functionalized with superhydrophilic coated pDA/TiO2/SiO2 with photoluminescent self-cleaning properties for efficient oil-water separation

The adhesion of high-viscosity oil contamination poses limitations on three-dimensional (3D) materials' practical use in treating oilfield-produced water (OPW). In this study, we developed a hybrid pDA/TiO2/SiO2 coating (PTS) on the surface of hydrophilic activated carbon (ACF1) through a combination of dopamine (DA) polymerization, ethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) hydrolysis, and the condensation of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) with SiO2 NPs. This coating was designed for gravity-based oil-water separation. The inherent porosity and generous pore size of ACF1-PTS conferred it an ultra-high permeation flux (pure water flux of 3.72 × 105 L∙m-2∙h-1), allowing it to effectively separate simulated oil-water mixtures and oil-water emulsions while maintaining exceptional permeation flux and oil rejection efficiency. When compared to cleaning methods involving ethanol aqueous solutions and NaClO, ultraviolet (UV) illumination cleaning proved superior, enabling oil-contaminated ACF1-PTS to exhibit remarkable flux recovery efficiency and oil-removal capabilities during cyclic separation of actual OPW. Furthermore, the ACF1-PTS material demonstrated impressive stability and durability when exposed to acidic environments (acid, alkali, and salt), robust hydraulic washout conditions, and 25-cycle tests. This study offers valuable insights and research avenues for the development of highly efficient and environmentally friendly 3D oil-water separation materials for the actual treatment of OPW.

Constructing a composite microfiltration carbon membrane by TiO2 and Fe2O3 for efficient separation of oil-water emulsions

Membrane-based separation technology has attracted enormous attention for oil/water emulsion treatment. Here, composite microfiltration carbon membranes (MCMs) were prepared from the precursor of phenolic resin doping with TiO2 and Fe2O3 via the processes of stereotype and pyrolysis. The functional groups, thermal stability, porous structure, microstructure, morphology, and hydrophilicity of the membrane samples were analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, bubble pressure method, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and water contact angle, respectively. The effect of dopant amount on the separation performance of MCMs was investigated. The results show that a mixed matrix system is constructed by TiO2 and Fe2O3 in MCMs, which is beneficial for further optimizing the pore size, porosity, and hydrophilicity of MCMs for oily wastewater treatment by varying the dopant amount. The maximum oil rejections are achieved at 98.9% and 99.6% for MCMs with a dopant content of TiO2 and Fe2O3 at 25%, respectively. In brief, this study offers an attractive strategy for improving the separation performance of MCMs for oily wastewater.

One-Step Hydrothermal Strategy for Preparation of a Self-Cleaning TiO2/SiO2 Fiber Membrane toward Oil-Water Separation in a Complex Environment

Oil pollution caused by a large number of industrial activities and oil spill accidents has posed serious harm to the environment and human health. However, some challenges remain with the existing separation materials, such as poor stability and fouling resistance. Herein, a TiO₂/SiO₂ fiber membrane (TSFM) was prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method for oil-water separation in acid, alkali, and salt environments. The TiO₂ nanoparticles were successfully grown on the fiber surface, endowing the membrane with superhydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity. The as-prepared TSFM exhibits high separation efficiency (above 98%) and separation fluxes (3016.38-3263.45 L·m^-2·h^-1) for various oil-water mixtures. Importantly, the membrane shows good corrosion resistance in acid, alkaline, and salt solutions and still maintains underwater superoleophobicity and high separation performance. The TSFM displays good performance after repeated separation, demonstrating its excellent antifouling ability. Importantly, the pollutants on the membrane surface can be effectively degraded under light radiation to restore its underwater superoleophobicity, showing the unique self-cleaning ability of the membrane. In view of its good self-cleaning ability and environmental stability, the membrane can be used for wastewater treatment and oil spill recovery and has a broad application prospect in water treatment in complex environments.

Outstanding Separation Performance of Oil-in-Water Emulsions with TiO2/CNT Nanocomposite-Modified PVDF Membranes

Membrane filtration is an effective technique for separating micro- and nano-sized oil droplets from harmful oil-contaminated waters produced by numerous industrial activities. However, significant flux reduction discourages the extensive application of this technology; therefore, developing antifouling membranes is necessary. For this purpose, various titanium dioxide/carbon nanotube (TiO₂/CNT) nanocomposites (containing 1, 2, and 5 wt.% multi-walled CNTs) were used for the modification of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafilter (250 kDa) membrane surfaces. The effects of surface modifications were compared in relation to the flux, the filtration resistance, the flux recovery ratio, and the purification efficiency. TiO₂/CNT_2% composite modification reduced both irreversible and total filtration resistances the most during the filtration of 100 ppm oil emulsions. The fluxes were approximately 4-7 times higher compared to the unmodified PVDF membrane, depending on the used transmembrane pressure (510, 900, and 1340 L/m²h fluxes were measured at 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 MPa pressures, respectively). Moreover, the flux recovery ratio (up to 68%) and the purification efficiency (95.1-99.8%) were also significantly higher because of the surface modification, and the beneficial effects were more dominant at higher transmembrane pressures. TiO₂/CNT_2% nanocomposites are promising to be applied to modify membranes used for oil-water separation and achieve outstanding flux, cleanability, and purification efficiency.

Preparation and Real World Applications of Titania Composite Materials for Photocatalytic Surface, Air, and Water Purification: State of the Art

The semiconducting transition metal oxide TiO2 is a rather cheap and non-toxic material with superior photocatalytic properties. TiO2 thin films and nanoparticles are known to have antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antialgal, self, water, and air-cleaning properties under UV or sun light irradiation. Based on these excellent qualities, titania holds great promises in various fields of applications. The vast majority of published field and pilot scale studies are dealing with the modification of building materials or generally focus on air purification. Based on the reviewed papers, for the coating of glass, walls, ceilings, streets, tunnels, and other large surfaces, titania is usually applied by spray-coating due to the scalibility and cost-efficiency of this method compared to alternative coating procedures. In contrast, commercialized applications of titania in medical fields or in water purification are rarely found. Moreover, in many realistic test scenarios it becomes evident that the photocatalytic activity is often significantly lower than in laboratory settings. In this review, we will give an overview on the most relevant real world applications and commonly applied preparation methods for these purposes. We will also look at the relevant bottlenecks such as visible light photocatalytic activity and long-term stability and will make suggestions to overcome these hurdles for a widespread usage of titania as photocalyst.

Green Chemistry Based Gold Nanoparticles Synthesis Using the Marine Bacterium Lysinibacillus odysseyi PBCW2 and Their Multitudinous Activities

Green chemistry has paved an 'avant-garde avenue' in the production and fabrication of eco-friendly stable nanoparticles employing the utilization of biological agents. In the present study we present the first report on the potential of the marine bacterium Lysinibacillus odysseyi PBCW2 for the extracellular production of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Utilizing a variety of methods, AuNPs in the cell-free supernatant of L. odysseyi (CFS-LBOE) were identified and their antioxidant, antibacterial, and dye-degrading properties were examined. The visual coloring of the reaction mixture to a ruby red hue showed the production of LBOE-AuNPs; validated by means of XRD, TEM, SEM, XRD, DLS, TGA, and FT-IR analysis. Additionally, the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl technique and the well diffusion assay were used to examine their dose-dependent antioxidant and antibacterial activity. These biogenic LBOE-AuNPs showed 91% dye degradation efficiency during catalytic reduction activity on BTB dye, demonstrating their versatility as options for heterogeneous catalysis.
