Exploring the Experience of Community Participation Among Individuals With Serious Mental Illness

People with serious mental illness (SMI) encounter restrictions in the quantity of their community participation. Less is known about the quality of their participation. We aimed to explore the relationship between symptoms of SMI and the daily experience (i.e., loneliness and enjoyment) of community participation. We examined daily community participation among people with SMI using ecological momentary assessment surveys. We built multilevel models to examine the associations between symptoms of SMI and loneliness or enjoyment during community participation. Our analysis included 183 people among four participant groups: bipolar disorder (n = 44), major depressive disorder (n = 46), schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder (n = 40), and control (n = 53). People with schizophrenia engaged in more unstructured activities (e.g., socializing) than people among other groups. Symptom association varied across diagnostic groups. To support tailored intervention development, researchers and practitioners should consider the context of participation and the clinical characteristics of the client.

Experiences with physical activity, health and well-being among young adults with serious mental illness

PURPOSE

To explore how young adults with serious mental illness (SMI) experience physical activity and how these experiences influence their perceived health and well-being.

METHODS

Nine young adults with SMI who had participated in an aerobic high-intensity interval training program were interviewed in depth. The interviews were transcribed and subjected to reflexive thematic analysis.

RESULTS

The results indicated that people with SMI mainly experience physical activity as a meaningful activity that contributes to an increased sense of well-being and better health. However, to overcome various barriers, it is crucial to experience social support and encouragement. The following three main themes were identified through reflexive thematic analysis: (1) positive changes in focus and an increase in well-being occur through physical activity; (2) increased mental strength results from physical activity; and (3) a lack of support and feelings of safety prevent physical activity.

CONCLUSIONS

This study shows that adapted physical activity is an important resistance resource that can promote stronger self-identity, increased mental well-being and social engagement and thus contribute to an improved ability to manage stressors. Furthermore, the findings reveal that to engage in physical activity and promote sustainable life changes, it is important for individuals to choose a physical activity based on personal interest and meaning.

Community participation as a predictor of depressive symptoms among individuals with serious mental illnesses

BACKGROUND

People with serious mental illnesses have elevated levels of depressive symptoms. Limited engagement in meaningful activities, such as work, social interactions, volunteering, and participation in faith, are one plausible explanation for this. Increased community participation over time may be associated with decreased depressive symptoms.

AIM

Examine whether an increase in participation over time predicts a decrease in depression after controlling for depression at the baseline.

METHODS

Participants were 183 adults with schizophrenia spectrum, bipolar disorder, or major depressive disorder who completed the Hopkins Symptom Index - Depression subscale and the Temple University Community Participation Measure. Participants completed these measures at baseline and either a 12- or 24-month follow-up timepoint. Multiple regression analyses were conducted with the depression score as a dependent variable and changes in community participation as a predictor variable. Demographics, baseline depression score, and time interval between baseline and last observation were entered as control variables.

RESULTS

Endorsing more activities as important, participating in more important areas that are important, and participating 'enough' in more important areas over time were each significant predictors of decreases in depression.

CONCLUSION

These findings enhance the connection between community participation and depression and suggest that a focus on participation may be important in terms of boosting both community functioning and treatment goals.
