Recent Advances in Nanomaterials Based Optical Sensors for the Detection of Melatonin and Serotonin

In this review paper we discussed the detection of melatonin and serotonin by using various optical methods. Melatonin and serotonin are very necessary body hormones these are also called neuroregulatory hormones secreted by pineal gland in brain by pinealocytes and shape of pineal gland is cone like. Sensitive detection of melatonin and serotonin in pharmacological samples and human serum is crucial for human beings, lots of research publications available in literature for melatonin and serotonin and we overviewed these papers. We have deeply reviewed many research papers where sensitively sensing of melatonin and serotonin occurs, by using of various interfering agents and nanomaterials. This review aims presenting colorimetry, fluorometry and spectrophotometric detection of melatonin (MEL) and serotonin (SER) by using different metal oxides, carbon nanomaterials (nanosheets, nanorods, nanofibers) and many other agents. Nanomaterials typically possess favourable optical, electrical and mechanical characteristics, they provide up new avenues for enhancing the efficacy of sensors. It is crucial to provide an optical sensors platform that is dependable, sensitive and low price. The development of sensors and biosensors to use nanomaterials for neurotransmitters has advanced significantly in recent years. There are currently many developing biomarkers in biological fluids, and bionanomaterial-based biosensor systems, as well as clinical and pharmacological settings, have garnered significant interest. Biomarkers have been found using optical devices in a quick, selective and sensitive manner. Our aim is to compile all the data that already published on MEL, SER sensing and comparison of each method, we mainly focused on principle, observations, sensitivity, selectivity, limit of detection, mechanism behind the reaction, effect of temperature, pH and concentration. In the last of this paper, we discuss some challenges of these methods and future projects.

AgInS2-Embedded Photocatalytic Membrane: Insights into the Excited State and Electron Transfer Dynamics

Photocatalytic reactions at semiconductor nanocrystal surfaces are useful for synthesizing value-added chemicals using sunlight. Semiconductor nanocrystals dispersed in a rigid framework, such as polymer film, can mitigate issues such as aggregation, product separation, and other challenges that are usually encountered in suspensions or slurries. Using a cation exchange technique, we successfully embedded AgInS2 nanoparticles into a Nafion matrix, termed AgInS2-Nafion. This was achieved through a galvanic exchange between In and Ag in In2S3 present within the Nafion film, enabling an adjustable Ag:In ratio for optimized photophysical properties. As in the case of colloidal suspension, the AgInS2 particles embedded in Nafion exhibit a long absorption tail, a broad emission band with a large Stokes shift, and emission lifetimes extending into the microseconds that are characteristic of donor-acceptor pairs, DAP. Remediation of surface states with the treatment of 3-mercaptopropionic acid resulted in significant enhancement in the emission yield. Charge carrier generation through bandgap excitation as well as activation of DAP states which reside within the bandgap is probed through transient absorption spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity of AgInS2-Nafion was probed by using thionine as an electron acceptor. The electron transfer rate constant from excited AgInS2 to thionine as observed from transient absorption spectroscopy was determined to be ∼6.3 × 1010 s-1. The design of a photoactive membrane offers new ways to carry out photocatalytic processes with greater selectivity.

Impact of nanotechnology on progress of flow methods in chemical analysis: A review

In evolution of instrumentation for analytical chemistry as crucial technological breakthroughs should be considered a common introduction of electronics with all its progress in integration, and then microprocessors which was followed by a widespread computerization. It is seems that a similar role can be attributed to the introduction of various elements of modern nanotechnology, observed with a fast progress since beginning of this century. It concerns all areas of the applications of analytical chemistry, including also progress in flow analysis, which are being developed since the middle of 20th century. Obviously, it should not be omitted the developed earlier and analytically applied planar structures like lipid membranes or self-assembled monolayers They had essential impact prior to discoveries of numerous extraordinary nanoparticles such as fullerenes, carbon nanotubes and graphene, or nanocrystalline semiconductors (quantum dots). Mostly, due to catalytic effects, significantly developed surface and the possibility of easy functionalization, their application in various stages of flow analytical procedures can significantly improve them. The application of new nanomaterials may be used for the development of new detection methods for flow analytical systems in macro-flow setups as well as in microfluidics and lateral flow immunoassay tests. It is also advantageous that quick flow conditions of measurements may be helpful in preventing unfavorable agglomeration of nanoparticles. A vast literature published already on this subject (e.g. almost 1000 papers about carbon nanotubes and flow-injection analytical systems) implies that for this reviews it was necessary to make an arbitrary selection of reported examples of this trend, focused mainly on achievements reported in the recent decade.

Porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks enhanced electrochemiluminescence (ECL) by overcoming aggregation-caused quenching: A new ECL emitter for the detection of trenbolone

The development of new electrochemiluminescence (ECL) luminophores has become a hot research topic in the field of ECL. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are widely used in ECL sensors due to their excellent ECL performance, high porosity, and abundant surface functional groups. In the work, we developed a cerium-based organic backbone as an ECL luminophor using 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)-porphyrin (TCPP) as organic ligand for the detection of trenbolone (TRE). Importantly, the Ce-MOFs can effectively prevent the self-aggregation and self-quenching of TCPP, so that the ECL signal is amplified. To further improve the conductivity and antigen loading capacity of the Ce-MOFs, platinum nanosheets (Pt NPs) were modified at its surface (Pt NPs@MOFs). The Au-ZnO with good biocompatibility is used as the substrate material to load that antibody through the Au-NH2. Based on the above strategy, we constructed a competitive immunosensor to achieve a highly sensitive detection of TRE. Under suitable circumstances, it was discovered that the ECL sensor had a linear relationship with the logarithm of the TRE concentration, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.61 fg/mL (S/N = 3). This work provides direction for the application of organic luminescent porphyrins and their derivatives in ECL sensors.

Kinetic Determination of Acetylsalicylic Acid Using a CdTe/AgInS2 Photoluminescence Probe and Different Chemometric Models

The combination of multiple quantum dots (QDs) in a multi-emitter nanoprobe can be envisaged as a promising sensing scheme, as it enables obtaining a collective response of individual emitters towards a given analyte and allows for achieving specific analyte-response profiles. The processing of these profiles using adequate chemometric methods empowers a more sensitive, reliable and selective determination of the target analyte. In this work, we developed a kinetic fluorometric method consisting of a dual CdTe/AgInS₂ quantum dots photoluminescence probe for the determination of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA). The fluorometric response was acquired as second-order time-based excitation/emission matrices that were subsequently processed using chemometric methods seeking to assure the second-order advantage. The data obtained in this work are considered second-order data as they have a three-dimensional size, I × J × K (where I represents the samples' number, J the fluorescence emission wavelength while K represents the time). In order to select the most adequate chemometric method regarding the obtained data structure, different chemometric models were tested, namely unfolded partial least squares (U-PLS), N-way partial least squares (N-PLS), multilayer feed-forward neural networks (MLF-NNs) and radial basis function neural networks (RBF-NNs).

Melatonin in different food samples: Recent update on distribution, bioactivities, pretreatment and analysis techniques

Melatonin (MLT) plays a significant role on maintaining the basic physiological functions and regulating various metabolic processes in plentiful organisms. Recent years have witnessed an increase in MLT's share in global market with its affluent functions. However, the worrisome quality issues and inappropriate or excessive application of MLT take place inevitably. In addition, its photosensitive properties, oxidation, complex substrate concentration and trace levels leave exact detection of MLT doubly difficult. Therefore, it is essential to exploit precise, sensitive and stable extraction and detection methods to resolve above questions. In this study, we reviewed the distribution and bioactivities of MLT and conducted a comprehensive overview of the developments of pretreatment and analysis methods for MLT in food samples since 2010. Commonly used pretreatment methods for MLT include not only traditional techniques, but also novel ones, such as solid-phase extraction, QuEChERS, microextraction by packed sorbent, solid phase microextraction, liquid phase microextraction, and so on. Analysis methods include liquid chromatography coupled with different detectors, GC methods, capillary electrophoresis, sensors, and so on. The advantages and disadvantages of different techniques have been compared and the development tendency was prospected.

Controlled synthesis of silver-based ternary quantum dots with outstanding luminescence

Quantum dots (QDs) have attracted much attention over the past decades due to their outstanding properties. However, obtaining QDs with excellent photoluminescence and quantum yields (QYs) from their aqueous synthesis is still a big concern. We herein present a green and facile synthesis of AgInS (AIS) QDs and AgInS-ZnS (AIS-ZnS) core-shell QDs using a combination of two capping agents (glutathione and sodium citrate). The temporal evolution of the optical properties is investigated by varying the reaction time and pH of the solution. The results show that the fluorescence intensity of the QDs increases as the reaction time increase, while the emission position blue-shift as the pH of the solution increase. An outstanding photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 90% is obtained at optimized synthetic conditions. The Fourier transform Infrared studies confirm efficient passivation of the QDs by the capping agents. The XRD analysis reveals that all the materials crystallize in the tetragonal crystalline phase, while the TEM micrographs of AIS-ZnS QDs reveal a spherical shape. The EDS analysis confirms the presence of Silver, Indium, Sulphide, and Zinc elements. The reported synthetic route is facile and eco-friendly.

Photoluminescent and visual determination of ibandronic acid using a carbon dots/AgInS2 quantum dots ratiometric sensing platform

A sensing platform combining carbon dots (CDs, with blue emission) and thiomalic acid (TMA)-capped AgInS₂ quantum dots (QDs, with orange emission) was developed aiming the photoluminescence (PL) ratiometric determination of ibandronic acid (IBAN), a bisphosphonate pharmaceutical. The ternary AgInS₂ QDs were used for IBAN probing, undergoing a concentration-related PL quenching in its presence, whilst the PL of CDs remained practically unaffected due to its chemical inertness towards the antiresorptive drug, provided an intrinsic self-reference fluorophore. In addition, a visual sensing approach was also proposed, employing for the first time ternary QDs. This relied on RGB images acquired by means of a digital camera and seek the development of a rapid IBAN screening test. The developed sensing platforms were employed for IBAN determination in samples with pharmaceutical interest providing good results, in accordance to the reported IBAN levels, and obtaining recovery values between 98 and 103%.

Chemometric-assisted kinetic determination of oxytetracycline using AgInS2 quantum dots as PL sensing platforms

In this work a kinetic fluorometric methodology relying on the time-based monitoring of the photoluminescence quenching of AgInS₂ ternary quantum dots induced by oxytetracycline, was developed. The kinetic approach allowed not only to reduce the LOD and improve sensitivity and selectivity but also to collect second-order data that was explored for the quantification of the target analyte in the presence of uncalibrated interfering species. Upon processing the acquired second-order kinetic PL data by unfolded partial least-squares (U-PLS), oxytetracycline was quantified in commercially available pharmaceutical formulations. The obtained results, namely an R²_P higher than 0.99 and RE lower than 8%, proved the suitability and accuracy of the developed approach.

N-doped MoS2-nanoflowers as peroxidase-like nanozymes for total antioxidant capacity assay

Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAC) Assay plays an important role in evaluating the quality of antioxidant food and monitoring the oxidative stress level of human body. It is mainly achieved by measuring the contents of antioxidants such as AA, L-Cys and GSH, while TAC can be detected by using peroxidase-like activity of artificial nanoenzyme materials. In this work, the N-Doped, defect-rich N-MoS₂NFs nano-materials were used to build the nano enzyme, which has strong stability and high peroxidase-like activity. H₂O₂ was detected because it can be catalyzed to generate the intermediate ·OH and make TMB appears blue. However, when H₂O₂, AA, L-Cys and GSH coexist in solution, due to the oxidation resistance of AA, L-Cys and GSH, they can competitively react with ·OH in solution or reduce TMB in oxidation state (oxTMB), which reduces the characteristic absorption of oxTMB, indirectly achieves the purpose of detecting AA, L-Cys and GSH, and finally realizes the determination of TAC, even in actual serum and saliva samples. At the same time, the N-MoS₂ NFs/NH₂-MIL-53(Al)+OPD system is further constructed. Based on the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between NH₂-MIL-53(Al) and oxidized OPD (oxOPD), the purpose of detecting TAC by fluorescence method was realized.

Ternary Quantum Dots in Chemical Analysis. Synthesis and Detection Mechanisms

Ternary quantum dots (QDs) are novel nanomaterials that can be used in chemical analysis due their unique physicochemical and spectroscopic properties. These properties are size-dependent and can be adjusted in the synthetic protocol modifying the reaction medium, time, source of heat, and the ligand used for stabilization. In the last decade, several spectroscopic methods have been developed for the analysis of organic and inorganic analytes in biological, drug, environmental, and food samples, in which different sensing schemes have been applied using ternary quantum dots. This review addresses the different synthetic approaches of ternary quantum dots, the sensing mechanisms involved in the analyte detection, and the predominant areas in which these nanomaterials are used.

Metal enhanced chemiluminescence nanosensor for ultrasensitive bioassay based on silver nanoparticles modified functional DNA dendrimer

A novel metal enhanced chemiluminescence (MEC) nanosensor was developed for ultrasensitive biosensing and imaging, based on functional DNA dendrimer (FDD), proximity-dependent DNAzyme and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The FDD containing two split G-quadruplex structures was prepared through an enzyme-free and step-by-step assembly strategy, and then reacted with AgNPs and hemin molecules to form the FDD/hemin/AgNPs facilely. Such a MEC nanosensor consisted of three modules: FDD (scaffold), the generated G-quadruplex/hemin DNAzyme (signal reporter) and AgNPs (chemiluminescence enhancer). The MEC effect was achieved by controlling the length of DNA sequences between AgNPs on the periphery of FDD and DNAzymes inside it. Such nanosensor exhibited 9-fold amplification and another 6.4-fold metal enhancement in chemiluminescence intensity, which can be easily applied into trace detection of multiple protein markers using a disposable protein immunoarray. The FDD/hemin/AgNPs-based multiplex MEC imaging assay showed wide linear ranges over 5 orders of magnitude and detection limits down to 5× 10^-5 ng L^-1 and 1.8 × 10^-4 U mL^-1 for cardiac troponin T and carcinoma antigen 125, demonstrating a promising potential in application to protein analysis and clinical diagnosis. Moreover, the MEC nanosensor can be effectively delivered into cells with excellent biocompatibility and outstanding stability, offering a new tool for detection of intracellular targets and suggesting wide applications in bioassay.

Determination of atenolol based on the reversion of the fluorescence resonance energy transfer between AgInS2 quantum dots and Au nanoparticles

The present work focused on the development of a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based sensing platform for the monitoring of atenolol in pharmaceutical formulations. The implemented approach involved the assembly of d-penicillamine-capped AgInS₂/ZnS quantum dots (QDs), as energy donors, and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as acceptors and the establishment of electrostatic interaction between both capping ligands at the nanoparticle surface, which induced the inhibition of the ternary QD photoluminescence (PL). The presence of a ZnS shell around the ternary QD core and the use of cysteamine (CA) as the AuNP capping ligand, instead of the typical citrate, allowed a more efficient FRET process to occur. The ability of Cd-free ternary QDs to be used as a sensing element in FRET-based assays was demonstrated, emphasizing the advantages relative to the common Cd-based QDs, when seeking the implementation of more environmentally friendly and less toxic analytical methodologies. The influence of several β-blocker drugs on the FRET donor-acceptor assemblies was thoroughly assessed. Atenolol and nadolol caused the aggregation of CA-AuNPs via hydrogen bonding interactions which reduced the spectral overlap between the donor and acceptor, impairing the FRET process and consequently the emission of the QDs was restored. Under the optimized conditions, the obtained results exhibited a linear relationship between the QD PL recovery signal and atenolol concentration of up to 11.22 mg L^-1 with a detection limit of 1.05 mg L^-1. This FRET sensing platform was successfully applied in the determination of atenolol in pharmaceutical formulations with recovery values ranging from 97.4 to 104.3%.
