Abstract
We present a novel bionanocatalyst fabricated by the adsorption-reduction of metal ions on a polyurethane/S-layer protein biotemplate. The bioinspired support was obtained by the adsorption of S-layer proteins (isolated from Lentilactobacillus kefiri) on polyurethane particles. Silver and platinum nanoparticles were well-loaded on the surface of the support after the combination with metallic salts and reduction with H2 at room temperature. Transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed the strawberry-like morphology of the bionanocatalysts with a particle size, dn, of 2.39 nm for platinum and 9.60 nm for silver. Both systems catalyzed the hydrogenation of p-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol with high efficiency in water at mild conditions in the presence of NaBH4. Three different amounts of bionanocatalyst were tested, and in all cases, conversions between 97 and 99% were observed. The catalysts displayed excellent recyclability over ten cycles, and no extensive damage in their nanostructure was noted after them. The bionanocatalysts were stable during their production, storage, and use, thanks to the fact that the biosupport provides an effective driving force in the formation and stabilization of the metallic nanoparticles. The successful bioinspired production strategy and the good catalytic ability of the systems are encouraging in the search for nontoxic, simple, clean, and eco-friendly procedures for the synthesis and exploitation of nanostructures.

Abstract
Radially polymerized dendritic compounds are nowadays an established polymer category next to their linear, branched, and cross-linked counterparts. Their uncommon tree-like architecture is characterized by adjustable internal cavities and external groups. They are therefore exceptional absorbents and this attainment of high concentrations in their interior renders them ideal reaction media. In this framework, they are applied in many environmentally benign implementations. One of the most important among them is water purification through pollutant decomposition. Simple and composite catalysts and photo-catalysts containing dendritic polymers and applied in water remediation will be discussed jointly with some unconventional solutions and prospects.

Abstract
The transformation of various organic molecules into value-added chemicals has been driven by the success in development of highly active catalytic systems. Heterogeneous catalysts have found use in many industrial processes by virtue of their ease of separation and high activities in various reactions. However, many processes employing heterogeneous catalysts in the transformation of organic molecules suffer significantly when it comes to product selectivity. Herein, we report on the synthesis of highly selective palladium nanoparticle (Pd NP)-containing catalysts. The heterogeneous catalysts reported herein consist of active mixed-metal oxides, in the form of perovskites as catalysts, and as catalytic supports for Pd NPs. The activity of pure perovskites when applied as catalysts in the hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde is 3 factors lower compared with Pd NPs immobilized on them. However, considering the fact that perovskites achieved percentage conversions between 18 and 25% in a short period of time makes them perfect candidates to replace platinum group metals in the future. In addition to being earmarked as the future of catalysis, perovskites induced a synergistic effect on the conversion of the substrate compared to when Pd NPs are immobilized on the silica support. Furthermore, these catalysts are 100% selective to hydrocinnamaldehyde and stable for up to five catalytic cycles. With regard to reusability of the catalysts, Pd/LaFeO3 was used as a benchmark catalyst and revealed the need for surface restructuring of the catalyst for optimum activity.

Abstract
Abstract
Metallic nanoparticles have been used as catalysts for various reactions, and the huge literature on the subject is hard to overlook. In many applications, the nanoparticles must be affixed to a colloidal carrier for easy handling during catalysis. These “passive carriers” (e.g. dendrimers) serve for a controlled synthesis of the nanoparticles and prevent coagulation during catalysis. Recently, hybrids from nanoparticles and polymers have been developed that allow us to change the catalytic activity of the nanoparticles by external triggers. In particular, single nanoparticles embedded in a thermosensitive network made from poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) have become the most-studied examples of such hybrids: immersed in cold water, the PNIPAM network is hydrophilic and fully swollen. In this state, hydrophilic substrates can diffuse easily through the network, and react at the surface of the nanoparticles. Above the volume transition located at 32°C, the network becomes hydrophobic and shrinks. Now hydrophobic substrates will preferably diffuse through the network and react with other substrates in the reaction catalyzed by the enclosed nanoparticle. Such “active carriers”, may thus be viewed as true nanoreactors that open new ways for the use of nanoparticles in catalysis. In this review, we give a survey on recent work done on these hybrids and their application in catalysis. The aim of this review is threefold: we first review hybrid systems composed of nanoparticles and thermosensitive networks and compare these “active carriers” to other colloidal and polymeric carriers (e.g. dendrimers). In a second step we discuss the model reactions used to obtain precise kinetic data on the catalytic activity of nanoparticles in various carriers and environments. These kinetic data allow us to present a fully quantitative comparison of different nanoreactors. In a final section we shall present the salient points of recent efforts in the theoretical modeling of these nanoreactors. By accounting for the presence of a free-energy landscape for the reactants’ diffusive approach towards the catalytic nanoparticle, arising from solvent-reactant and polymeric shell-reactant interactions, these models are capable of explaining the emergence of all the important features observed so far in studies of nanoreactors. The present survey also suggests that such models may be used for the design of future carrier systems adapted to a given reaction and solvent.

Abstract
The formation of binary nanohybrids consisting of environmentally benign components, γ-Fe2O3, chitosan (CS), and Ag (Ag-γ-Fe2O3@CS) (CSIOAg), containing very low concentration of Ag NPs (≤1.2 μM), has been reported. In the as-synthesized nanohybrids, the presence of γ-Fe2O3 (8.5 ± 0.8 nm) and Ag (5.9 ± 0.5 nm) are revealed by optical, XRD, TEM, and XPS analyses, and their presence in cubic phase is determined by XRD and SAED measurements. The catalytic activity of CSIOAg has been analyzed by performing the reduction of certain toxic dyes. Under all kinetic conditions, the reaction is attended by an induction period, which is reduced upon increasing [Ag] and [Dye] in a specific concentration range, as well as temperature, suggesting restructuring of the surface prior to reduction. In case of methyl orange (MO), the reduction results in its cleavage to produce N,N-dimethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine and sodium sulfanilate in a significantly higher (>97%) yield in a bimolecular reaction between MO and BH4 -. The duration of induction period is regularly decreased and the rate of reduction (k app) increases linearly with increasing Ag in the wide concentration range (0.03-2.4 μM). The reduction takes place with a second-order rate constant of 2.7 × 104 dm3 mol-1 s-1, which is >3.5-fold higher than that in the absence of chitosan (IOAg) under identical experimental conditions. The kinetics of reduction of MO is controlled by the nature and extent of its adsorption on the catalyst surface. The weaker binding between MO and Ag catalyst only allows its effective reduction. The XPS analysis of CSIOAg and IOAg containing the same amount of Ag (1.2 μM) showed its higher amount on the surface of CSIOAg (0.12%) as compared to that of IOAg (0.09%). Detailed kinetic analysis of MO reduction, performed under pseudo-kinetic conditions for both the nanohybrids revealed them to follow Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model and exhibited the recyclability up to 10 cycles with fairly high reaction efficiency and TOF, suggesting it to be a sustainable green nanosystem.

Abstract
Metal/semiconductor composites are promising catalysts with superior catalytic activity. In this work, a Cu/CuO-Ag composite with structure that consisted of Ag and CuO nanoparticles (NPs) decorated on the surface of Cu were fabricated via a facile in situ method. With characterization by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), the structure and components of the Cu/CuO-Ag composite were well-defined. The Cu/CuO-Ag composite exhibited superior catalytic activities for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) in the presence of NaBH4 with just a trace amount of Ag NPs (1.28 wt %). The reduction reaction is completed in 75 s with an apparent rate constant kapp of 4.60 × 10-2 s-1. The Cu/CuO-Ag composite also showed excellent durable catalytic stability, as no significant activity loss was detected in the consecutive five reaction runs. With the aid of the Sabatier principle and volcano plot, the opportune chemical adsorption energy of the reagent 4-NP on the Cu/CuO-Ag composite was inferred to be the key to its high reaction rate. The CuO NPs as a semiconductor with narrow band gap also could help the Cu/CuO-Ag composite to capture the electrons/hydride ions and increase opportunities for 4-NP to be reduced. Furthermore, the Cu/CuO-Ag composite exhibited outstanding activity on the oxidative degradation of methylene blue (MB). This work enriched the bimetal/semiconductor catalyst system and supplied new insight into the catalysis mechanism.

Abstract
Herein we report on the catalytic activity of mesoporous nickel, iron, cerium, cobalt, and manganese oxides prepared using KIT-6 as a hard template via evaporation-assisted precipitation. The mesoporous metal oxides (MMOs) were characterized and used as heterogeneous catalysts in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-Nip) by sodium borohydride (BH4-). Furthermore, polyamidoamide (PAMAM) dendrimers were used to synthesize gold-palladium nanoalloy particles. The size of AuPd/PAMAM was found to be 3.5 ± 0.8 nm in diameter before being immobilized on the aforementioned mesoporous metal oxides and used as catalysts in the reduction of 4-Nip. Prior to catalytic evaluation, the reduction profiles of the mesoporous metal oxides were investigated by hydrogen-temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR) and showed that mesoporous metal oxides can be easily reduced at lower temperatures and that the immobilization of gold-palladium nanoalloy particles lowers their reduction temperatures. Mesoporous cobalt and manganese oxides showed catalytic activity toward 4-Nip reduction, and the activity was enhanced after immobilization of the gold-palladium nanoalloys. Isolation of nanoparticles activity was achieved by immobilization of the gold-palladium nanoalloys on the inert silica support. From this we postulated an electron relay mechanism for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol. With the use of power rate law we showed that 4-Nip reduction follows pseudo-first-order kinetics.

Abstract
Herein we report a simple and green synthesis of smart Au and Ag@Au nanocomposite particles using poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)/polyethyleneimine (PNIPAm/PEI) core-shell microgels as dual reductant and templates in an aqueous system. The nanocomposite particles were synthesized through a spontaneous reduction of tetrachloroauric (III) acid to gold nanoparticles at room temperature, and in situ encapsulation and stabilization of the resultant gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with amine-rich PEI shells. The preformed gold nanoparticles then acted as seed nanoparticles for further generation of Ag@Au bimetallic nanoparticles within the microgel templates at 60 °C. These nanocomposite particles were characterized by TEM, AFM, XPS, UV-vis spectroscopy, zeta-potential, and particle size analysis. The synergistic effects of the smart nanocomposite particles were studied via the reduction of p-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol. The catalytic performance of the bimetallic Ag@Au nanocomposite particles was 25-fold higher than that of the monometallic Au nanoparticles. Finally, the controllable catalytic activities of the Au@PNIPAm/PEI nanocomposite particles were demonstrated via tuning the solution pH and temperature.
