Adsorption of thiophene on the surfaces of X 12 Y 12 (X = Al, B, and Y = N,P) nanoclusters; A DFT study

Mechanical quantum analysis on the role of transition metals on the delivery of metformin anticancer drug by the boron phosphide nanotube

We scrutinized the impact of doping of X atoms (X = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) on the metformin (MF) drug delivery performance of a BP nanotube (BPNT) using density functional B3LYP calculations. The pristine BPNT was not ideal for the drug delivery of MF because of a weak interaction between the drug and nanotube. Doping of the Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, and Fe into the BPNT surface raised the adsorption energy of MF from -5.3 to -29.1, -28.7, -29.8, -32.1, and -26.9 kcal/mol, respectively, demonstrating that the sensitiveness of the metal-doped BPNT increased after increasing the radius atomic of metals. Ultimately, there was an increase in the adhesion performance and capacity of the MF after X (especially Co atom) doping, making the nanotube suitable for MF drug delivery. The mechanism of MF reaction with the BPNT changed from covalent bonding in the natural environment to hydrogen bonding in the cancerous cells with high acidity.

Exploring the Sensing Potential of g-C3N4 versus Li/g-C3N4 Nanoflakes toward Hazardous Organic Volatiles: A DFT Simulation Study

Ab initio calculations were performed to determine the sensing behavior of g-C3N4 and Li metal-doped g-C3N4 (Li/g-C3N4) quantum dots toward toxic compounds acetamide (AA), benzamide (BA), and their thio-analogues, namely, thioacetamide (TAA) and thiobenzamide (TAA). For optimization and interaction energies, the ωB97XD/6-31G(d,p) level of theory was used. Interaction energies (Eint) illustrate the high thermodynamic stabilities of the designed complexes due to the presence of the noncovalent interactions. The presence of electrostatic forces in some complexes is also observed. The observed trend of Eint in g-C3N4 complexes was BA > TAA > AA > TBA, while in Li/g-C3N4, the trend was BA > AA > TBA > TAA. The electronic properties were studied by frontier molecular orbital (FMO) and natural bond orbital analyses. According to FMO, lithium metal doping greatly enhanced the conductivity of the complexes by generating new HOMOs near the Fermi level. A significant amount of charge transfer was also observed in complexes, reflecting the increase in charge conductivity. NCI and QTAIM analyses evidenced the presence of significant noncovalent dispersion and electrostatic forces in Li/g-C3N4 and respective complexes. Charge decomposition analysis gave an idea of the transfer of charge density between quantum dots and analytes. Finally, TD-DFT explained the optical behavior of the reported complexes. The findings of this study suggested that both bare g-C3N4 and Li/g-C3N4 can effectively be used as atmospheric sensors having excellent adsorbing properties toward toxic analytes.

Robust and facile detection of formaldehyde through transition metals doped olympicene sensors: a step forward DFT investigation

Formaldehyde, a volatile organic compound (VOC) released by building and decoration materials, has many applications in the chemical feedstock industry. Excessive release of formaldehyde can cause serious health issues, such as chest tightness, cough, cancer, and tissue damage. Therefore, detection of formaldehyde is required. Herein transition metal (Fe, Ni, and Pd) doped olympicene is evaluated as a gas sensor for the detection of formaldehyde. The performance of the designed electrochemical sensor is evaluated through interaction energy, natural bond orbital (NBO) non-covalent interaction (NCI), electron density differences (EDD), electrostatic potential (ESP), quantum theory of atom in molecule (QTAIM), frontier molecular orbital (FMO), and density of states (DOS) analysis. Interaction energies obtained at B3LYP-D3/def-2 TZVP level of theory shows that formaldehyde is physiosorbed over the surface of transition metal doped olympicene. The trend for interaction energy is OLY(Ni)/HCHO > OLY(Fe)/HCHO > OLY(Pd)/HCHO. The presence of non-covalent interactions is confirmed by the QTAIM and NCI analyses, while transfer of charges is confirmed by natural bond orbital analysis. The reduced density gradient (RDG) approach using noncovalent interaction (NCI) analysis demonstrates that electrostatic hydrogen bonding interactions prevail in the complexes. Recovery time is calculated to check the reusability of the sensor. This study may provide a deep insight for the designing of highly efficient electrochemical sensor against formaldehyde with transition metals doped on olympicene.

A DFT and QTAIM insight into ethylene oxide adsorption on the surfaces of pure and metal-decorated inorganic fullerene-like nanoclusters

In this industrial era, the use of low-dimensional nanomaterials as gas sensors for environmental monitoring has received enormous interest. To develop an effective sensing method for ethylene oxide (EO), DFT computations are conducted using method ωB97X-D and B3LYP with 6-31G(d,p) basis set to evaluate the adsorption behavior of ethylene oxide gas on the surfaces of pristine, as well as Scandium and Titanium decorated B12N12, Al12N12, and Al12P12 nanocages. Several properties like structural, physical, and electronic are studied methodically to better understand the sensing behavior. Scandium-decorated aluminum phosphate and boron nitride nanocages were shown to perform better in terms of adsorption properties. The short recovery time observed in this study is beneficial for the repetitive use of the gas sensor. The Natural Bond Orbital and molecular electrostatic potential analysis demonstrated a substantial quantity of charge transfer from adsorbate to adsorbents. The bandgap alternation after adsorption shows an influence of adsorption on electronic properties. The interactions of adsorbate and adsorbents are further studied using the ultraviolet-visible predicted spectrum, and quantum theory of atoms in molecules all of which yielded promising findings.

Revealing the incorporation of an NH2 group into the edge of carbon dots for H2O2 sensing via the C-N⋯H hydrogen bond interaction

We investigated hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) sensing on NH₂-functionalized carbon dots (Cdots) for three different -NH₂ positions, and the N atom was found to be the active site using a quantum computational approach. B3LYP and 6-31G(d,p) were used for density functional theory (DFT) ground state calculations, whereas CAM-B3LYP and the same basis set were used in time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) excited state calculations. Structural optimization showed that the H₂O₂ is chemisorbed on 1-sim via a C-N⋯H hydrogen bond interaction with an adsorption energy of -10.61 kcal mol^-1. Mulliken atomic charge distributions and electrostatic potential (ESP) analysis were both used to determine reactivity of the molecules at the atomic level. For in-depth analysis of the ground states, we utilized Frontier molecular orbital (FMO) theory, quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), and non-covalent interaction (NCI) index analysis. In addition, we also present UV-vis absorption spectra and charge transfer lengths to understand the mechanism of H₂O₂ sensing in excited states. Based on the molecular and electronic properties of the NH₂-Cdots, it was shown that 1-sim is a potential candidate for use as an electrochemical sensor for H₂O₂ sensing. Whereas 3-sim is believed to be a potential candidate for use as an optical sensor of H₂O₂ based on the UV-vis characteristics via photoinduced charge transfer.

Intermolecular hydrogen bonding of alcohols with dinitrobenzene radical anion and dianion: A combined electrochemical and DFT study

Hydrogen bonding is one of the most important inter-molecular interactions in the field of biochemistry and medicinal chemistry. Such non-covalent interactions play a vital role in self-assembly phenomena, chemical structures, material properties and enzymatic catalysis. Herein, we present hydrogen bonding phenomenon in alcohols-dinitrobenzene (DNB) radical anion/dianion systems using electrochemical and computational approaches. First, 1,3-DNB radical anion and dianion were generated through electrochemical method and then hydrogen bonding interactions with aliphatic alcohols in DMSO are studied through cyclic voltammetry (CV). CV results show that the cathodic peak potential of 1,3-Dinitrobenzene in Dimethyl sulfoxide is shifted catholically upon addition of alcohols which represent hydrogen bonding phenomenon. Theoretical investigations are performed to gain deep insight on hydrogen bonding interaction strength in DNB-alcohol systems. H-bonding interaction of all isomers of DNB (1,2-, 1,3-, 1,4-), its corresponding radical anion, and dianion with aliphatic alcohols is studied using density functional calculations. The strength of H-bonding is evaluated both qualitatively and quantitatively using interaction energies, vibrational and electronic spectroscopic analysis. Understanding of these interactions will be helpful in gaining insight into biological systems where these interactions play significant role.

A foundational theoreticalAl12E12(E = N, P) adsorption and quinolone docking study: cage–quinolone pairs, optics and possible therapeutic and diagnostic applications

This combined Al₁₂E₁₂ (E = N, P) surface adsorption and docking study describes the new possibility of prospective potential probing(photophysical/optical) and therapy(medicinal/biochemical) with these adsorbent conjugates. DFT investigations were undertaken herein to help generate geometrical models and better understand the possible favorable adsorption energetics. We attempt to explain their adsorption behaviors and docking involving SARS-CoV-2 viruses (PDB)to assess their possible pharmaceutical potential against the pandemic virus (COVID-19). The adsorption behavior of 8-hydroxy-2-methylquinoline (MQ) and its halogenated derivatives, 5,7-diiodo-8-hydroxy-2-methylquinoline (MQI), 5,7-dichloro-8-hydroxy-2-methylquinoline (MQCl), and 5,7-dibromo-8-hydroxy-2-methylquinoline (MQBr), with aluminum-nitrogen (AlN), and aluminum-phosphorous (AlP) fullerene-like nanocages is reported. A decrease in the hardness of the nanoclusters when adsorbed with drug molecules resulted in an incrementally improved chemical softness (see e.g., Hard-Soft Acid Base theory) indicating that reactivity of the drug molecule in the resulting complex increases upon cluster chemical adsorption. The energy gap is found to be maximized for AlN-MQ and minimized for AlP-MQI; the reduced density gradient (RDG) iso-surfaces and AIM studies also corroborated this. Therefore, these two were found, respectively, to be the least and most electrically conductive of the species under study. We selected a simple medicinal building block (chelator)in addition to selecting the cluster based on previous literature reports. Important parameters such as gap energies and global indices were determined. We assessed NLO properties. The SARS-CoV-2 virus PDB docking data for 6VW1, 6VYO, 6WKQ, 7AD1, 7AOL, 7B3C, were enlisted as ligand targets for studies of docking (PatchDock Server) using the requisite PDB geometries (For the structure of 6VW1, kindly see reference, 2020; For the structure of 6VYO kindly see reference, 2020; For the structure of 6WKQ kindly see reference, 2020; For the structure of 7AD1 kindly see reference, 2021; For the structure of 7AOL kindly see reference, 2021; For the structure of 7B3C kindly see reference, 2021). Synthesis and Tetraphenylethylene-Based Aggregation-Induced Emission Probe for Rapid Detection of Nitroaromatic Compounds in Aqueous Media

Tetraphenylethylene (TPE) can be used to construct fluorescent probes with typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior for next-generation sensing applications. McMurry coupling and Suzuki cross coupling strategies provided the desired sensor thiophene-substituted tetraphenylethylene (THTPE). The synthesized TPE analogues were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Maximum AIE of THTPE was observed in 90% water (H2O/THF) content due to extensive formation of aggregates. The AIE properties of THTPE have been utilized for facile detection of nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) (1.0 nM) through a fluorescence quenching mechanism. A paper strip adsorbed with the AIE-based THTPE fluorophore is developed for rapid and convenient detection of NAC-based analytes. Further, interaction of THTPE with analytes is also studied via Gaussian software at the DFT/B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory. Interaction energy, frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs), and non-covalent interaction (NCI) analyses are studied by using the same method. Computational results revealed that nitrobenzene (NB) has the strongest interaction while 1,3-dinitrobenzene (DNB) exhibits the least interaction with the sensor molecule. These computational results clearly demonstrate good agreement with experimental data.

Designing of Inorganic Al12N12 Nanocluster with Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn Metals for Efficient Hydrogen Storage Materials

Hydrogen is considered as one of the attractive environmentally friendly materials with zero carbon emission. Hydrogen storage is still challenging for its use in various energy applications. That’s why hydrogen gained more and more attention to become a major fuel of today’s energy consumption. Therefore, nowadays, hydrogen storage materials are under extensive research. Herein, efforts are being devoted to design efficient systems which could be used for future hydrogen storage purposes. To this end, we have employed density functional theory (DFT) to optimize the geometries of the designed inorganic Al[Formula: see text]N[Formula: see text] nanoclusters with transition metals (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn). Various positions of metal encapsulated Al[Formula: see text]N[Formula: see text] are examined for efficient hydrogen adsorption. After adsorption of H2 on late transition metals encapsulated Al[Formula: see text]N[Formula: see text] nanocluster, different geometric parameters like frontier molecular orbitals, adsorption energies and nature bonding orbitals have been performed for exploring the potential of metal encapsulated for hydrogen adsorption. Moreover, molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) analysis was also performed in order to explore the different charge separation upon H2 adsorption on metals encapsulated Al[Formula: see text]N[Formula: see text] nanoclusters. Also, global indices of reactivity like ionization potential, electron affinity, electrophilic index, chemical softness and chemical hardness were also examined by using DFT. The adsorption energy results suggested encapsulation of late transition metals in Al[Formula: see text]N[Formula: see text] nanocage efficiently enhancing the adsorption capability of Al[Formula: see text]N[Formula: see text] for hydrogen adsorption. Results of all analysis suggested that our designed systems are efficient candidates for hydrogen adsorption. Thus, we recommended a novel kind of systems for hydrogen storage materials.

Effective adsorption of A-series chemical warfare agents on graphdiyne nanoflake: a DFT study

Chemical warfare agents (CWAs) are highly poisonous and their presence may cause diverse effects not only on living organisms but also on environment. Therefore, their detection and removal in a short time span is very important. In this regard, here the utility of graphdiyne (GDY) nanoflake is studied theoretically as an electrochemical sensor material for the hazardous CWAs including A-230, A-232, and A-234. Herein, we explain the phenomenon of adsorption of A-series CWAs on GDY nanoflake within the density functional theory (DFT) framework. The characterisation of adsorption is based on optimised geometries, BSSE-corrected energies, SAPT0, RDG, FMO, CHELPG charge transfer, QTAIM and UV-Vis analyses. The calculated counterpoise adsorption energies for reported complexes range from - 13.70 to - 17.19 kcal mol^-1. These adsorption energies show that analytes are physiosorbed onto GDY which usually takes place through noncovalent interactions. The noncovalent adsorption of CWAs on GDY is also attributed by the SAPT0, RDG and QTAIM analyses. These properties also reveal that dispersion factors dominate in the complexes among many noncovalent components (exchange, induction, electrostatic, steric and repulsion). In order to estimate the sensitivity of GDY, the %sensitivity and average energy gap variations are quantitatively measured by energies of HOMO and LUMO orbitals. In terms of adsorption affinity of GDY, UV-Vis analysis, CHELPG charge transfer and DOS analyses depict an appreciable response towards these toxic CWAs. Graphical abstract.

Computational Study of Structural, Molecular Orbitals, Optical and Thermodynamic Parameters of Thiophene Sulfonamide Derivatives

Thiophene and sulfonamide derivatives serve as biologically active compounds, used for the manufacture of large numbers of new drugs. In this study, 11 selected derivatives of thiophene sulfonamide were computed for their geometric parameters, such as hyperpolarizability, chemical hardness (ƞ), electronic chemical potential (μ), electrophilicity index (ω), ionization potential (I), and electron affinity (A). In addition, FT-IR and UV-Vis spectra were also simulated through theoretical calculations. The geometrical parameters and vibrational frequencies with assignments of the vibrational spectra strongly resemble the experimentally calculated values. Besides, the frontier molecular orbitals were also determined for various intramolecular interactions that are responsible for the stability of the compounds. The isodensity surfaces of the frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) are the same pattern in most of the compounds, but in some compounds are disturbed due to the presence of highly electronegative hetero-atoms. In this series of compounds, 3 shows the highest HOMO–LUMO energy gap and lowest hyperpolarizability, which leads to the most stable compound and less response to nonlinear optical (NLO), while 7 shows the lowest HOMO–LUMO energy gap and highest hyperpolarizability, which leads to a less stable compound and a high NLO response. All compounds have their extended three-dimensional p-electronic delocalization which plays an important role in studying NLO responses.

Investigations of adsorption behavior and anti-inflammatory activity of glycine functionalized Al12N12 and Al12ON11 fullerene-like cages

The adsorption behavior of the amino acid, glycine (Gly), via the carboxyl, hydroxyl, and amino groups onto the surfaces of Al₁₂N₁₂ and Al₁₆N₁₆ fullerene-like cages were computationally evaluated by the combination of density functional theory (DFT) and molecular docking studies. It was found that Gly can chemically bond with the Al₁₂N₁₂ and Al₁₆N₁₆ fullerene-like cages as its amino group being more favorable to interact with the aluminum atoms of the adsorbents compared to carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. Oxygen and carbon doping were reported to reduce steric hindrance for Glycine interaction at Al site of Al₁₂ON₁₁/Gly and Al₁₂CN₁₁/Gly complexes. Interaction was further enhanced by oxygen doping due to its greater electron withdrawing effect. Herein, the Al₁₂ON₁₁/Gly complex where two carbonyl groups of Gly are bonded to the aluminum atoms of the Al₁₂N₁₂ fullerene-like cage is the most stable interaction configuration showing ∆_adsH and ∆_adsG values of -81.74 kcal/mol and -66.21 kcal/mol, respectively. Computational studies also revealed the frequency shifts that occurred due to the interaction process. Molecular docking analysis revealed that the Al₁₂N₁₂/Gly (-11.7 kcal/mol) and the Al₁₂ON₁₁/Gly (-9.2 kcal/mol) complexes have a good binding affinity with protein tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α). TNF-α was implicated as a key cytokine in various diseases, and it has been a validated therapeutic target for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. These results suggest that the Al₁₂N₁₂/Gly complex in comparison with the Al₁₆N₁₆/Gly, Al₁₂ON₁₁/Gly, and the Al₁₂CN₁₁/Gly complexes could be efficient inhibitors of TNF-α.

Efficient Cu Decorated Inorganic B12P12 Nanoclusters for Sensing Toxic COCl2 Gas: A Detailed DFT Study

Gas sensing materials have been widely explored recently owing to their versatile environmental and agriculture monitoring applications. Phosgene (COCl2) is a toxic and harmful gas, therefore, a reliable and sensitive technique is required for monitoring its quantity in the atmosphere. In this study, pure as well as copper decorated B[Formula: see text]P[Formula: see text](Cu-BP) nanoclusters were analyzed using DFT method to investigate their specific potential for phosgene gas adsorption. Cu interaction resulted in three optimized geometries S1, S2 and S3 with interaction energies of [Formula: see text]234.52[Formula: see text]kJ/mol, [Formula: see text]214.59[Formula: see text]kJ/mol and [Formula: see text]266.45[Formula: see text]kJ/mol, respectively. In all these three cases, the COCl2 prefers to interact at the top of the cage. The phosgene molecule (COCl2) interacts with bare nanocage at a distance of 3.22[Formula: see text]Å with interaction energy of [Formula: see text]6.22[Formula: see text]kJ/mol, while the observed interaction energies of phosgene at Cu decorated B[Formula: see text]P[Formula: see text] are [Formula: see text]76.90[Formula: see text]kJ/mol, [Formula: see text]119.03[Formula: see text]kJ/mol and [Formula: see text]29.60[Formula: see text]kJ/mol, respectively. To observe the variations in electronic structure, fermi level, molecular electrostatic potential (MEP), frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs), natural bonding orbital ([Formula: see text]), softness, hardness, chemical potential and electrophilicity are calculated before and after phosgene adsorption. Energy gap reduce significantly after phosgene adsorption from 2.31[Formula: see text]eV, 2.05[Formula: see text]eV and 2.46[Formula: see text]eV to 1.54[Formula: see text]eV, 1.57[Formula: see text]eV and 2.45[Formula: see text]eV, respectively. Results of all analysis suggested that decoration of Cu significantly enhanced the adsorption power of B[Formula: see text]P[Formula: see text] nan-cluster for COCl2 molecule. Therefore, the Cu-decorated B[Formula: see text]P[Formula: see text] nanocages are considered as potential candidates for application in COCl2 sensors.

Effect of Aromatic System Expansion on Crystal Structures of 1,2,5-Thia- and 1,2,5-Selenadiazoles and Their Quaternary Salts: Synthesis, Structure, and Spectroscopic Properties

Rational manipulation of secondary bonding interactions is a crucial factor in the construction of new chalcogenadiazole-based materials. This article reports detailed experimental studies on phenanthro[9,10-c][1,2,5]chalcogenadiazolium and 2,1,3-benzochalcogenadiazolium salts and their precursors. The compounds were synthesized, characterized employing NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. TD-DFT calculations were also performed. The influence of the size of the aromatic system on the molecular motifs formed by the compounds in the solid state has been studied by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In case of the salts, the nature of an anion was also taken into consideration. The results show that cyclic [E···N]2 supramolecular synthon connects neighboring molecules of phenanthro[9,10-c][1,2,5]chalcogenadiazoles, with a relatively large aromatic system, in dimers regardless of the chalcogen atom in the molecule. Both N-methyl-2,1,3-benzothiadiazolium and N-methylphenanthro[9,10-c][1,2,5]chalcogenadiazolium cations have a strong affinity for triflate and iodide anions, therefore the formation of S···N or Se···N secondary bonding interactions is observed only in two out of the eight quaternary salts. Less coordinating anions must be used to enable the building blocks studied to form cyclic [E···N]2 synthons. Moreover, for two of the triflate salts, which are isostructural, a new supramolecular motif has been observed.

Remarkable enhancement in sensor ability of polyaniline upon composite formation with ZnO for industrial effluents

Polyaniline emeraldine salt and Polyaniline Zinc Oxide composite are comprehensively studied to compare their sensing ability towards ammonia, acetone, methanol and ethanol. Sensing ability is evaluated through thermodynamic, geometric and electronic parameters. A number of orientations are evaluated in search for the lowest energy structure. The comparison of thermodynamic, geometric and electronic parameters of simple and composite sensors confirmed that composite sensor shows better sensing ability than simple PANI. Composite formation between polyaniline and zinc oxide is a thermodynamically feasible process with interaction energy of -42.8 kcal/mol. Both sensor shows highest interaction energy for ethanol among four analytes. Composite sensor shows almost twice the interaction with ethanol, methanol and acetone while 1.5 times the interaction energy for ammonia. The results of run simulations and subsequent calculations showed that in composite sensors, zinc oxide not only enhances the binding power of conducting polymer with analytes but also interacts directly with analytes. Strong hydrogen bonding as well as weak dispersion forces of attraction are responsible for the stability of composite and all complexes, as revealed by non-covalent interaction (NCI) studies. Acetone shows a different behaviour in composite sensor complex than other analytes.

Adsorption of Phosgene Gas on Pristine and Copper-Decorated B12N12 Nanocages: A Comparative DFT Study

Nanostructured gas sensors find diverse applications in environmental and agricultural monitoring. Herein, adsorption of phosgene (COCl₂) on pure and copper-decorated B₁₂N₁₂ (Cu-BN) is analyzed through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Adsorption of copper on B₁₂N₁₂ results in two optimized geometries, named Cu@b₆₆ and Cu@b₆₄, with adsorption energies of -193.81 and -198.45 kJ/mol, respectively. The adsorption/interaction energies of COCl₂ on pure BN nanocages are -9.30, -6.90, and -3.70 kJ/mol in G1, G2, and G3 geometries, respectively, whereas the interaction energies of COCl₂ on copper-decorated BN are -1.66 and -16.95 kJ/mol for B1 and B2, respectively. To examine the changes in the properties of pure and Cu-BN nanocages, geometric parameters, dipole moment, Q _NBO, frontier molecular orbitals, and partial density of states (PDOS) are analyzed to comprehensively illustrate the interaction mechanism. The results of these parameters reveal that COCl₂ binds more strongly onto copper-doped BN nanocages. Moreover, a higher charge separation is observed in COCl₂-Cu-BN geometries as compared to copper-decorated BN geometries. Therefore, these nanocages may be considered as potential candidates for application in phosgene sensors.

Cyclic versus straight chain oligofuran as sensor: A detailed DFT study

This study presents a novel approach for exploring the sensitivity and selectivity of cyclic oligofuran (5/6/7CF) toward gaseous analytes and their comparison with straight chain analogues (5/6/7SF). The work is not only vital to understand the superior sensitivity but also for rational design of new sensors based on cyclic ring structures of oligofuran. Interaction of cyclic and straight chain oligofuran with NH₃, CO, CO₂, N₂H₄, HCN, H₂O₂, H₂S, CH₄, CH₃OH, SO₂, SO₃ and H₂O analytes is studied via DFT calculation at B3LYP-D3/6-31++G (d, p) level of theory. The sensitivity and selectivity are illustrated by the thermodynamic parameters (E_bind, SAPT0 energies, NCI analysis), electronic properties (H-L gap, percentage of average energy gap, CHELPG charge transfer, DOS spectra), and UV-Vis analysis. All these properties are simulated at B3LYP/6-31G (d) level of theory while UV-Vis is calculated at TD-DFT method. Cyclic oligofurans have high binding energies with analytes compared to 5/6/7SF which corresponds to higher sensitivity of 5/6/7CF. Furthermore, the cyclization of oligofuran significantly improves the sensitivity and selectivity of the system. Alteration in electronic properties of 5/6/7CF and 5/6/7SF is remarkably high upon complexation with SO₂ and SO₃. Further the stability of rings (5, 6 and 7 membered cyclic oligofurans) and their SO₃ complexes is also confirmed by molecular dynamics calculations. The findings of the work clearly suggest that the cyclic geometry enhances not only sensitivity but also selectivity of conducting polymers (oligofuran).
