Visible light induced RAFT for asymmetric functionalization of silica mesopores

One key feature for bioinspired transport design through nanoscale pores is nanolocal, asymmetric as well as multifunctional nanopore functionalization. Here, we use a visible-light induced, controlled photo electron/energy transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization for asymmetric polymer placement into mesoporous silica thin films including asymmetric polymer sequence design.

Pushing the limits of nanopore transport performance by polymer functionalization

Inspired by the design and performance of biological pores, polymer functionalization of nanopores has emerged as an evolving field to advance transport performance within the last few years. This feature article outlines developments in nanopore functionalization and the resulting transport performance including gating based on electrostatic interaction, wettability and ligand binding, gradual transport controlled by polymerization as well as functionalization-based asymmetric nanopore and nanoporous material design going towards the transport direction. Pushing the limits of nanopore transport performance and thus reducing the performance gap between biological and technological pores is strongly related to advances in polymerization chemistry and their translation into nanopore functionalization. Thereby, the effect of the spatial confinement has to be considered for polymer functionalization as well as for transport regulation, and mechanistic understanding is strongly increased by combining experiment and theory. A full mechanistic understanding together with highly precise nanopore structure design and polymer functionalization is not only expected to improve existing application of nanoporous materials but also opens the door to new technologies. The latter might include out of equilibrium devices, ionic circuits, or machine learning based sensors.

New Light in Polymer Science: Photoinduced Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer Polymerization (PET-RAFT) as Innovative Strategy for the Synthesis of Advanced Materials

Photochemistry has attracted great interest in the last decades in the field of polymer and material science for the synthesis of innovative materials. The merging of photochemistry and reversible-deactivation radical polymerizations (RDRP) provides good reaction control and can simplify elaborate reaction protocols. These advantages open the doors to multidisciplinary fields going from composite materials to bio-applications. Photoinduced Electron/Energy Transfer Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain-Transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization, proposed for the first time in 2014, presents significant advantages compared to other photochemical techniques in terms of applicability, cost, and sustainability. This review has the aim of providing to the readers the basic knowledge of PET-RAFT polymerization and explores the new possibilities that this innovative technique offers in terms of industrial applications, new materials production, and green conditions.

Recent trends in nanopore polymer functionalization

Functional nanopores play an essential role in many biotechnological applications such as sensing, or drug delivery. Prominent examples are polymer functionalized ceramic or solid state nanopores. Intensive research efforts led to a discovery of a plethora of polymer functionalized nanopores demonstrating gated molecular transport upon basically all common stimuli. Nevertheless, nature's biological pore transport precision is unreached. This can be, among others, ascribed to limits in design precision especially with respect to functionalization. Recent trends in polymer functionalized nanopores address the role of confinement and polymerization control, strategies toward more sustainable reaction conditions, such as visible light initiation and strategies toward nanoscale local placement of polymer functionalization. The resulting multi-stimuli responsive nanopore performance enables concerted release or transport, side selective separation and selective detection.

Recent progress and advances in the environmental applications of MXene related materials

MXenes are a new type of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbide or carbonitride material with a 2D structure similar to graphene. The general formula of MXenes is M_n+1X_nT_x, in which M is an early transition metal element, X represents carbon, nitrogen and boron, and T is a surface oxygen-containing or fluorine-containing group. These novel 2D materials possess a unique 2D layered structure, large specific surface area, good conductivity, stability, and mechanical properties. Benefitting from these properties, MXenes have received increasing attention and emerged as new substrate materials for exploration of various applications including, energy storage and conversion, photothermal treatment, drug delivery, environmental adsorption and catalytic degradation. The progress on various applications of MXene-based materials has been reviewed; while only a few of them covered environmental remediation, surface modification of MXenes has never been highlighted. In this review, we highlight recent advances and achievements in surface modification and environmental applications (such as environmental adsorption and catalytic degradation) of MXene-based materials. The current studies on the biocompatibility and toxicity of MXenes and related materials are summarized in the following sections. The challenges and future directions of the environmental applications of MXene-based materials are also discussed and highlighted.

Graft modification of lignin-based cellulose via enzyme-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and free-radical coupling

In this study, a green approach combining enzyme-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and free-radical coupling was developed for the modification of jute fiber, which is a typical lignin-based cellulose. Jute fiber surface was covered by rich amount of lignin, which offered great opportunities for further functional modification. The controlled polymerization of vinyl monomers, acrylamide (AM) or butyl acrylate (BA), was carried out by horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-initiated RAFT to form well-defined polymers with well-controlled molecular weights and structures. Enzymatic grafting by HRP occurred between the free radicals of well-defined polymers and free radicals of lignin on jute. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis indicated the alkyl chain length of polymers prepared via HRP-initiated RAFT polymerization was well-controlled. Other results of flourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that well-controlled alkyl chains prepared via enzymatic catalysis were grafted on the exposed lignin of jute. The study explores a new and eco-friendly modification method for lignin-based materials with the controlled graft chain structure via two different catalysis with HRP.
