Micellization behavior of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide in the absence and presence of sodium polystyrene sulfonate in water and methanol-water mixture: A conductivity approach

Narrow Range of Coagulation of Ion Associates of Poly(styrene sulfonate) with Alcian Blue Dye

The ionic association of Alcian Blue dye with poly(styrene sulfonate) in aqueous solutions was studied for analytical purposes. The quadruple-charged cationic dye, Alcian Blue, was found to form colloidal ionic associates with poly(styrene sulfonate) anions. When the amounts of opposite charges are nearly equal, the resulting ionic associates lose solubility and coagulate rapidly. This effect occurs within a narrow range of the ratio of poly(styrene sulfonate) to Alcian Blue. At the point of charge equivalence, the zeta potential of the resulting particles is zero, which facilitates flocculation. The resulting flocs enlarge to approximately 0.05-0.5 mm and precipitate rapidly. FTIR spectroscopy confirms that the precipitate contains both poly(styrene sulfonate) and Alcian Blue dye. Sedimentation kinetics was studied in detail using scanning turbidimetry. Due to the high molar absorbance of the Alcian Blue dye at 600 nm, the point of equimolar charge ratio was precisely determined by spectrophotometry. The complete precipitation of ionic associates occurs when the amount of poly(styrene sulfonate) ranges from 1.4 to 1.55 mmol per 1 g of Alcian Blue dye. Such a narrow coagulation range allows for the use of the studied effect for quantitative analysis. Both Alcian Blue dye and poly(styrene sulfonate) can be quantified if one of their concentrations is known.

Aggregation phenomena and physico-chemical properties of tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide and protein (bovine serum albumin) mixture: Influence of electrolytes and temperature

It is important for biological, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries to understand how proteins and surfactants interact. Herein, the interaction of bovine serum albumin (BSA) with tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) in different inorganic salts (KCl, K2SO4, K3PO4.H2O) has been explored through the conductivity measurement method at different temperatures (300.55 to 325.55 K) with a specific salt concentration and at a fixed temperature (310.55 K) using different salts concentrations. The extent of micelle ionization (α) and different thermodynamic parameters associated with BSA and TTAB mixtures in salt solutions were calculated. Evaluation of the magnitudes of ∆Hm0 and ∆Sm0 showed that the association was exothermic and primarily an enthalpy-operated process in all cases at lower contents of BSA, but the system became endothermic, and entropy driven in the presence of K3PO4.H2O at a relatively higher concentration of BSA. The enthalpy-entropy compensation variables were determined, which explained the types and nature of interactions between TTAB and BSA in salt media. Molecular docking analysis revealed that the main stabilizing factors in the BSA-TTAB complex are electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. These findings aligned with the significant results obtained from the conductometry method regarding the nature and characteristics of binding forces observed between BSA and TTAB.

Viscosity of Sodium Polystyrenesulfonate with Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide in the Mixture of Methanol and Water

Viscosity of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in the presence of sodium polystyrene sulfonate (NaPSS) in methanol-water mixed solvent media has been reported at 308.15 K. The results have been analyzed on the basis of a simple model based on the scaling theory of the viscosity of polyelectrolyte solutions put forward by Plucktaveesak et al. (J. Phys. Chem. B, 2003, 107, 8166-8171). The specific viscosity data obtained here for the CTAB-NaPSS couple in mixed solvent media agree very well with the predictions of the above model. It has been established that the fraction of free counterions of the polyelectrolyte can be conveniently recovered in these complex fluids.

Influences of NaCl and Na2SO4 on the Micellization Behavior of the Mixture of Cetylpyridinium Chloride + Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone at Several Temperatures

Herein, the conductivity measurement technique is used to determine the interactions that may occur between polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) polymer and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) surfactant in the presence of NaCl and Na2SO4 of fixed concentration at variable temperatures (298.15-323.15 K) with an interval of 5 K. In the absence or presence of salts, we observed three critical micelle concentrations (CMC) for the CPC + PVP mixture. In all situations, CMC1 values of CPC + PVP system were found to be higher in water than in attendance of salts (NaCl and Na2SO4). Temperature and additives have the tendency to affect counterion binding values. Various physico-chemical parameters were analyzed and demonstrated smoothly, including free energy (ΔG0m), enthalpy (ΔH0m) and entropy change (ΔS0m). The micellization process is achieved to be spontaneous based on the obtained negative ΔG0m values. The linearity of the ΔHmo and ΔSmo values is excellent. The intrinsic enthalpy gain (ΔH0*m) and compensation temperature (Tc) were calculated and discussed with logical points. Interactions of polymer hydrophobic chains or the polymer + surfactant associated with amphiphilic surface-active drugs can employ a strong impact on the behavior of the gels.

Impacts of polyols and temperature on the micellization, interaction and thermodynamics behavior of the mixture of tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide and polyvinyl alcohol

Herein, the aggregation manner of the mixture of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) was performed in polyols (glucose, maltose and galactose) media over 300.55–320.55 K temperatures range with 5 K interval through conductivity measurement method. The micelle formation of TTAB + PVA mixture was identified by the assessment of critical micelle concentration (CMC) from the plots of specific conductivity (κ) versus TTAB concentration. The degree of micelle ionization (α), the extent of bound counter ions (β) as well as thermodynamic properties ( Δ G m 0 ${\Delta}{G}_{m}^{0}$ , Δ H m 0 ${\Delta}{H}_{m}^{0}$ and Δ S m 0 ${\Delta}{S}_{m}^{0}$ ) of TTAB + PVA systems have been estimated. The CMC values reveal that the micelle formation of TTAB + PVA mixture experience an enhancement in the manifestation of polyols. The values of free energy of micellization ( Δ G m 0 ${\Delta}{G}_{m}^{0}$ ) are negative for the TTAB + PVA system in aqueous polyols media, suggesting a spontaneous aggregation phenomenon. The Δ H m 0 ${\Delta}{H}_{m}^{0}$ and Δ S m 0 ${\Delta}{S}_{m}^{0}$ values of TTAB + PVA systems direct that the PVA molecule interacts with TTAB through the exothermic, ion-dipole, and hydrophobic interactions. The thermodynamic properties of transfer were also determined for the move of TTAB + PVA mixture from H2O to water + polyols mixed solvents. The values of compensation temperature (T c) and intrinsic enthalpy gain ( Δ H m 0 , ∗ ${\Delta}{H}_{m}^{0,\ast }$ ) were evaluated and discussed for the studied system.

Physicochemical Studies on the Interaction between Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate and Methylene Blue in Methanol-Water Mixed Solvent Media

The surface activity and the process of micellization of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) with methylene blue (MB) in a methanol-water mixed solvent system were investigated by tensiometry and conductometry at 298.15 K. The measurements of surface tension and conductivity of SDS-MB complex were carried up to 0.3 volume fractions of methanol because the resulting complex appeared turbid above 0.3 volume fractions of methanol. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the SDS was determined from both tensiometry and conductometry. The CMC of SDS increased with the increasing volume fraction of methanol due to the inclusion of methanol in the micelles and decreased in the presence of methylene blue due to the reduction of electrostatic repulsion within the anionic moiety of SDS by the positive charge of the added dye. Different properties like surface excess concentration $\left({\mathrm{\Gamma }}_{\max }\right)$ , minimum surface area $\left(A_{\text{min}}\right)$ , Gibbs free energy of micellization $\left(\mathrm{\Delta }{G}_{\mathrm{m}}^o\right)$ , surface pressure ( ${\pi }_{\text{CMC}}$ ), efficiency of a surfactant ( $\text{p}{C}_{20}$ ), packing parameter $\left(P\right)$ , and standard free energy interfacial adsorption $\left(\mathrm{\Delta }{G}_{\text{ads}}^o\right)$ of SDS in the absence/presence of MB were calculated. On the basis of $\mathrm{\Delta }{G}_{\mathrm{m}}^o$ values, it was noticed that the increasing volume fraction of methanol disfavors the micellization of SDS, while the presence of MB increased the efficiency of SDS making the micellization process more spontaneous.

Interaction behavior of polyion-counterion for sodium polystyrene sulfonate

The specific conductances are measured for sodium polystyrene sulfonate in water and methanol-water mixture. The equivalent conductivity data against concentration are evaluated by scaling concept. The effects of the solvent composition and the polyelectrolyte concentration on the fractions of uncondensed counterions ( f ) , the polyion conductivities λ p , the standard state free energies of counterion association Δ G A o , and the polyion transference number T P are calculated. The charge density ( ξ ) of sodium polystyrene sulfonate was used for the research article [1] to see the variation of the critical aggregation concentration of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide in sodium polystyrene sulfonate against the charge density of sodium polystyrene sulfonate.
