Effect of water behaviour on the oil transport in illite nanopores: Insights from a molecular dynamics study

Shale oil in China is widely distributed and has enormous resource potential. The pores of shale are at the nanoscale, and traditional research methods encounter difficulty in accurately describing the fluid flow mechanism, which has become a bottleneck restricting the industrial development of shale oil in China. To clarify the distribution and migration laws of fluid microstructure in shale nanopores, we constructed a heterogeneous inorganic composite shale model and explored the fluid behavior in different regions of heterogeneous surfaces. The results revealed the adsorption capacity for alkanes in the quartz region was stronger than that in the illite region. When the aperture was small, solid-liquid interactions dominated; as the aperture increased, the bulk fluid achieved a more uniform and higher flow rate. Under conditions of small aperture/low temperature/low pressure gradient, the quartz region maintained a negative slip boundary. Illite was more hydrophilic than quartz; when the water content was low, water molecules formed a "liquid film" on the illite surface, and the oil flux percentages in the illite and quartz regions were 87% and 99%, respectively. At 50% water content, the adsorbed water in the illite region reached saturation, the quartz region remained unsaturated, and the difference in the oil flux percentage of the two regions decreased. At 70% water content, the adsorbed water in the two regions reached a fully saturated state, and a layered structure of "water-two-phase region-water" was formed in the heterogeneous nanopore. This study is of great significance for understanding the occurrence characteristics and flow mechanism of shale oil within inorganic nanopores.

Understanding the Aggregation of Model Island and Archipelago Asphaltene Molecules near Kaolinite Surfaces using Molecular Dynamics

The solubility of asphaltenes in hydrocarbons changes with pressure, composition, and temperature, leading to precipitation and deposition, thereby causing one of the crucial problems that negatively affects oil production, transportation, and processing. Because, in some circumstances, it might be advantageous to promote asphaltene agglomeration into small colloidal particles, molecular dynamics simulations were conducted here to understand the impacts of a chemical additive inspired by cyclohexane on the mechanism of aggregation of model island and archipelago asphaltene molecules in toluene. We compared the results in the presence and absence of a kaolinite surface at 300 and 400 K. Cluster size analyses, radial distribution functions, angles between asphaltenes, radius of gyration, and entropic and energetic calculations were used to provide insights on the behavior of these systems. The results show that the hypothetical additive inspired by cyclohexane promoted the aggregation of both asphaltenes. Structural differences were observed among the aggregates obtained in our simulations. These differences are attributed to the number of aromatic cores and side chains on the asphaltene molecules as well as to that of heteroatoms. For the island structure, aggregation in the bulk phase was less pronounced than that in the proximity of the kaolinite surface, whereas the opposite was observed for the archipelago structure. In both cases, the additive promoted stacking of asphaltenes, yielding more compact aggregates. The results provided insights into the complex nature of asphaltene aggregation, although computational approaches that can access longer time and larger size scales should be chosen for quantifying emergent meso- and macroscale properties of systems containing asphaltenes in larger numbers than those that can currently be sampled via atomistic simulations.

Molecular Alignment-Mediated Stick-Slip Poiseuille Flow of Oil in Graphene Nanochannels

The flow behavior of oil in nanochannels has attracted extensive attention for oil transport applications. In most, if not all, of the prior theoretical simulations, oil molecules were observed to flow steadily in nanochannels under pressure gradients. In this study, non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are conducted to simulate the Poiseuille flow of oil with three different hydrocarbon chain lengths in graphene nanochannels. Contrary to the conventional perception of steady flows of oil in nanochannels, we find that oil molecules with the longest hydrocarbon chain (i.e., n-dodecane) exhibit notable stick-slip flow behavior. An alternation between the high average velocity of n-dodecane in the slip motion and the low average velocity in the stick motion is observed, with a drastic, abrupt velocity jolt of up to 40 times occurring at the transition in a stick-slip motion. Further statistical analyses show that the stick-slip flow behavior of n-dodecane molecules originates from the molecular alignment change of oil near the graphene wall. The molecular alignment of n-dodecane shows different statistical distributions under stick and slip motion states, leading to significant changes of friction forces and thus notable velocity fluctuations. This work provides new insights into the Poiseuille flow behavior of oil in graphene nanochannels and may offer useful guidelines for other mass transport applications.
