Solvent and catalyst-free synthesis, corrosion protection, thermodynamic, MDS and DFT calculation of two environmentally friendly inhibitors: Bis-phosphonic acids

Dopamine modified natural glucomannan as a highly efficient inhibitor for mild steel: Experimental and theoretical methods

In this work, Glucomannan was modified with dopamine to synthesize a new polysaccharide Schiff base (GAD). After confirmation of GAD by NMR and FT-IR spectroscopic methods, it was introduced as a sustainable corrosion inhibitor with excellent anti-corrosion action for mild steel in 0.5 M hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution. Employing electrochemical test, morphology measurement, and theoretical analysis, the anticorrosion performance of GAD on mild steel in 0.5 M HCl solution is determined. Maximum efficiency of GAD for suppressing the corrosion rate of mild steel at 0.12 g L^-1 reaches 99.0 %. After immersion in HCl solution for 24 h, the results from scanning electron microscopy indicate that GAD is firmly attached to the mild steel surface by making a protective layer. According to the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), FeN bonds existed on the steel surface indicate the presence of chemisorption between GAD and Fe to form stable complexes attracted to the active position on the mild steel. The effects of Schiff base groups on the corrosion inhibition efficiencies were also investigated. Moreover, the inhibition mechanism of GAD was further illustrated by the free Gibbs energy, quantum chemical calculation and molecular dynamics simulation.

Corrosion mitigation for steel in acid environment using novel p-phenylenediamine and benzidine coumarin derivatives: synthesis, electrochemical, computational and SRB biological resistivity

Three novel p-phenylenediamine and benzidine coumarin derivatives were synthetized, namely: 4,4'-((((1,4-phenylenebis(azaneylylidene))bis(ethan-1-yl-1-ylidene))bis(2-oxo-2H-chromene-3,6-diyl))bis(diazene-2,1-diyl))dibenzenesulfonic acid (PhODB), 4,4'-(((-([1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-diylbis(azaneylylidene))bis(ethan-1-yl-1-ylidene))bis(2-oxo-2H-chromene-3,6-diyl))bis(diazene-2,1-diyl))dibenzenesulfonic acid (BODB) and 4,4'-(((-((3,3'-dimethoxy-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-diyl)bis(azaneylylidene))bis(ethan-1-yl-1-ylidene))bis(2-oxo-2H-chromene-3,6-iyl))bis(diazene-2,1-diyl))dibenzenesulfonic acid (DODB). Their chemical structures were proved by performing Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry analysis. The synthesized p-phenylenediamine and benzidine coumarin derivatives were tested as corrosion inhibitors for mild steel (MS) in 1 M HCl solution using weight loss, electrochemical, morphological, and theoretical studies. The compound 3,3'-dimethoxy benzidine coumarin derivative (DODB) was proved to give the highest efficiency with 94.98% obtained from weight loss measurements. These compounds are mixed inhibitors, as seen by the polarization curves. Impedance diagrams showed that when the concentration of these derivatives rose, the double-layer capacitance fell and the charge transfer resistance increased. Calculated thermodynamic parameters were computed and the mechanism of adsorption was also studied for the synthesized p-phenylenediamine and benzidine coumarin derivatives. The ability of the synthesized derivatives to protect the surface against corrosion was investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), UV-visible spectroscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Theoretical chemical calculations (DFT) and biological resistivity (SRB) were investigated.

One-Pot Hydrothermal Synthesized Nitrogen and Sulfur Codoped Carbon Dots for Acid Corrosion Inhibition of Q235 Steel

N and S codoped carbon dots having good water solubility have been successfully made by a novel hydrothermal method and characterized by FTIR, XPS, and TEM. The as-synthesized CDs were carbon particles rich in polar functional groups less than 10 nm in size. Electrochemical measurements, gravimetry, and surface analysis methods were utilized to examine the inhibition characteristics and adsorption mechanism of CDs on the carbon steel in acid pickling solutions. Electrochemical measurements verified that the CDs displayed adequate protection with high inhibition efficiency of 97.8%. The long-term weight-loss experiments up to 72 h further confirmed the excellent corrosion inhibition at room temperature and 313 K. The results presented are helpful for the formulation of more effective acid pickling corrosion inhibitors.

An Overview of Molecular Dynamic Simulation for Corrosion Inhibition of Ferrous Metals

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is a powerful tool to study the molecular level working mechanism of corrosion inhibitors in mitigating corrosion. In the past decades, MD simulation has emerged as an instrument to investigate the interactions at the interface between the inhibitor molecule and the metal surface. Combined with experimental measurement, theoretical examination from MD simulation delivers useful information on the adsorption ability and orientation of the molecule on the surface. It relates the microscopic characteristics to the macroscopic properties which enables researchers to develop high performance inhibitors. Although there has been vast growth in the number of studies that use molecular dynamic evaluation, there is still lack of comprehensive review specifically for corrosion inhibition of organic inhibitors on ferrous metal in acidic solution. Much uncertainty still exists on the approaches and steps in performing MD simulation for corrosion system. This paper reviews the basic principle of MD simulation along with methods, selection of parameters, expected result such as adsorption energy, binding energy and inhibitor orientation, and recent publications in corrosion inhibition studies.
