Cognitive architectures as a tool for investigating the role of oscillatory power and coherence in cognition

Cognitive processing stages in mental rotation - How can cognitive modelling inform HsMM-EEG models?

The aspiration for insight into human cognitive processing has traditionally driven research in cognitive science. With methods such as the Hidden semi-Markov Model-Electroencephalography (HsMM-EEG) method, new approaches have been developed that help to understand the temporal structure of cognition by identifying temporally discrete processing stages. However, it remains challenging to assign concrete functional contributions by specific processing stages to the overall cognitive process. In this paper, we address this challenge by linking HsMM-EEG3 with cognitive modelling, with the aim of further validating the HsMM-EEG3 method and demonstrating the potential of cognitive models to facilitate functional interpretation of processing stages. For this purpose, we applied HsMM-EEG3 to data from a mental rotation task and developed an ACT-R cognitive model that is able to closely replicate human performance in this task. Applying HsMM-EEG3 to the mental rotation experiment data revealed a strong likelihood for 6 distinct stages of cognitive processing during trials, with an additional stage for non-rotated conditions. The cognitive model predicted intra-trial mental activity patterns that project well onto the processing stages, while explaining the additional stage as a marker of non-spatial shortcut use. Thereby, this combined methodology provided substantially more information than either method by itself and suggests conclusions for cognitive processing in general.

Oscillatory Resonance and Dynamic Manifolds in Cortical Networks with Time Delay and Multiple External Stimuli

Rhythmic oscillation is crucial for information transmission and neural communication among different brain areas. Stochastic resonance (SR) can evoke different patterns of neural oscillation. However, the characteristics of network resonance and underlying dynamical mechanisms are still unclear. In this paper, a biological model of cortical network is established and its dynamical response to external periodic stimulation is investigated. We explore the oscillatory resonance of excitatory and inhibitory populations in cortical network. It is found that the intrinsic parameters of neural populations determine the extent of resonant activity, indicating that the firing rate exhibits coherent oscillation when the frequency of external stimulation is close to intrinsic frequency of neural population. In addition, the nonlinear dynamics of cortical network in oscillatory resonance can be represented by helical manifolds in low-dimensional state space. The geometry of neural manifolds reveals the periodic dynamics and state transition in oscillatory resonance. Moreover, time delay in chemical synapses can induce multiple resonances, which appear intermittently at integer multiples of the period of input signal. The dynamical response of neural population achieves maximal periodically, due to the transition of network states induced by time delay. Furthermore, mean-field theory is applied to analyze theoretical dynamic of cortical networks with time delay and demonstrate the effective transmission of stimulation information via oscillatory resonance in the brain. Consequently, the obtained results contribute to the improvement of neuromodulation for neurological disease from the viewpoint of the neural basis.

Neural Correlates of Workload Transition in Multitasking: An ACT-R Model of Hysteresis Effect

This study investigated the effect of task demand transitions at multiple levels of analysis including behavioral performance, subjective rating, and brain effective connectivity, while comparing human data to Adaptive Control of Thought-Rational (ACT-R) simulated data. Three stages of task demand were designed and performed sequentially (Low-High-Low) during AF-MATB tasks, and the differences in neural connectivity during workload transition were identified. The NASA Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) and the Instantaneous Self-Assessment (ISA) were used to measure the subjective mental workload that accompanies the hysteresis effect in the task demand transitions. The results found significant hysteresis effects on performance and various brain network measures such as outflow of the prefrontal cortex and connectivity magnitude. These findings would assist in clarifying the direction and strength of the Granger Causality under demand transitions. As a result, these findings involving the neural mechanisms of hysteresis effects in multitasking environments may be utilized in applications of neuroergonomics research. The ability to compare data derived from human participants to data gathered by the ACT-R model allows researchers to better account for hysteresis effects in neuro-cognitive models in the future.

Cognitive Modeling at ICCM: State of the Art and Future Directions

The goal of cognitive modeling is to build faithful simulations of human cognition. One of the challenges is that multiple models can often explain the same phenomena. Another challenge is that models are often very hard to understand, explore, and reuse by others. We discuss some of the solutions that were discussed during the 2015 International Conference on Cognitive Modeling.

Using data-driven model-brain mappings to constrain formal models of cognition

In this paper we propose a method to create data-driven mappings from components of cognitive models to brain regions. Cognitive models are notoriously hard to evaluate, especially based on behavioral measures alone. Neuroimaging data can provide additional constraints, but this requires a mapping from model components to brain regions. Although such mappings can be based on the experience of the modeler or on a reading of the literature, a formal method is preferred to prevent researcher-based biases. In this paper we used model-based fMRI analysis to create a data-driven model-brain mapping for five modules of the ACT-R cognitive architecture. We then validated this mapping by applying it to two new datasets with associated models. The new mapping was at least as powerful as an existing mapping that was based on the literature, and indicated where the models were supported by the data and where they have to be improved. We conclude that data-driven model-brain mappings can provide strong constraints on cognitive models, and that model-based fMRI is a suitable way to create such mappings.
