Abstract
PURPOSE This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the potential of voice analysis as a prescreening tool for type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by examining the differences in voice recordings between non-diabetic and T2DM participants. METHODS 60 participants diagnosed as non-diabetic (n = 30) or T2DM (n = 30) were recruited on the basis of specific inclusion and exclusion criteria in Iran between February 2020 and September 2023. Participants were matched according to their year of birth and then placed into six age categories. Using the WhatsApp application, participants recorded the translated versions of speech elicitation tasks. Seven acoustic features [fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, harmonic-to-noise ratio (HNR), cepstral peak prominence (CPP), voice onset time (VOT), and formant (F1-F2)] were extracted from each recording and analyzed using Praat software. Data was analyzed with Kolmogorov-Smirnov, two-way ANOVA, post hoc Tukey, binary logistic regression, and student t tests. RESULTS The comparison between groups showed significant differences in fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, CPP, and HNR (p < 0.05), while there were no significant differences in formant and VOT (p > 0.05). Binary logistic regression showed that shimmer was the most significant predictor of the disease group. There was also a significant difference between diabetes status and age, in the case of CPP. CONCLUSIONS Participants with type II diabetes exhibited significant vocal variations compared to non-diabetic controls.

Abstract
Background and Aims The postoperative residual neuromuscular block (PRNB) has a significant impact on patient safety and well-being, but continues to remain underestimated. Objective evaluation of handgrip strength using a force dynamometer can be useful to identify postoperative muscle weakness. Material and Methods Thirty-two American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) class I and II patients who received general anesthesia were included. Patients were extubated after the train-of-four (TOR) ratio (TOFR) was >0.90 and the clinical criteria for motor power recovery were judged as adequate. The measurements of handgrip strength and peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) were obtained at baseline, 15 min after extubation, and 1, 2, and 4 h postoperatively. The incidence of significant decline from baseline (>25%) was determined. The correlation between handgrip strength and PEFR was assessed using Spearman correlation. The time to return to baseline for muscle grip strength and PEFR was performed using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. A P value of 0.05 was considered significant for all tests. Results The incidence of the significant decline in handgrip strength from baseline was 100% at 15 and 60 min, 76% at 2 h, and 9.4% at 4 h. There was a strong correlation between muscle grip strength and PEFR (0.89, P < 0.001). None of the patients exhibited the potential complications of PRNB. (PRMB in abstract. It should be uniform) The mean time to return to the baseline value of muscle grip strength was 3.8 h (95% confidence interval [CI] 3.6-3.9), and the mean time to return to baseline for PEFR was 3.2 h (95% CI 2.9-3.4 h). Conclusion Objective assessment of muscle grip strength using a force dynamometer has the potential to be a new objective metric to monitor postoperative muscle weakness.

Abstract
AIMS The objective of this scoping review is to synthesize all of the known information about the relationship between diabetes mellitus and voice quality and to explore its potential applications for new technology. METHODS We conducted a scoping literature review of articles published between March 2000 and September 2021 using the following databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase. Additionally, we did a manual search of Google Scholar. The search strategy abides by the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Studies pertaining to the relationship between diabetes and the voice were categorized separately for further evaluation. RESULTS Out of the 2732 originally identified articles, nine were ultimately included in this scoping review. The chosen articles address both diabetes and its impact on a variety of vocal parameters. CONCLUSIONS There is currently very little research investigating the relationship between diabetes, neuropathy, and phonatory symptoms. Additionally, existing publications contain some contradictory findings. Further research that incorporates imaging technology is needed to clarify the physiological explanations for the differences observed between healthy individuals and those with diabetes mellitus. Such information can be used to develop noninvasive technology for diabetes diagnosis and monitoring.

Abstract
UNLABELLED We used data from NHANES to explore the associations between serum folate and grip strength, and found that high levels of serum folate were associated with increased grip strength among females rather than males. It is recommended to maintain a proper level of serum folate, especially in women. PURPOSE Associations and dose-response relationships between serum total folate, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, and grip strength in general adults were unknown. Thus, we conducted this analysis for further exploration. METHODS Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database of 2011-2014 cycle were used. The independent variables including serum total folate, combined total folate (total folate plus Mefox), and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate. The dependent variable was BMI-corrected grip strength. Linear regression and the restricted cubic splines were used in our analyses. RESULTS A total of 9079 adults aged over 20 years were included. In multivariate-adjusted model 2, compared with quartile (Q) 1, grip strength increased in Q3 of combined total folate and total folate, and the weighted β values with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of grip strength were 0.06 (0.01, 0.12) and 0.06 (0.00, 0.10) for combined total folate and total folate, respectively. In the stratified analysis by gender, positive relationships between combined total folate, total folate, and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate and grip strength were found only in females, with β (95% CIs) of 0.07 (0.02, 0.12), 0.07 (0.03, 0.12), and 0.09 (0.05, 0.13) for combined total folate, total folate, and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate in Q4, respectively. Non-linear positive dose-response relationships between serum folate and grip strength were also found only in females, not in males. CONCLUSION Our study suggested a positive association between serum folate and grip strength, while this positive association was only found in females; besides, the dose-response relationships were in a non-linear trend. Thus, it is recommended to maintain a proper serum folate level to keep better muscle strength, especially for women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As the duration of diabetes progresses, various disease related complications might occur in patients. The main goal of this paper is to compare acoustic and aerodynamic measures of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with a control group of healthy subjects. METHODS A total of 91 subjects, 51 individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM group) and 40 healthy volunteers (HV group) were participated in the study. Maximum phonation time (MPT) was captured for assessing phonatory mechanics. Acoustic voice parameters, including mean fundamental frequency (mean fo), jitter local (Jlocal), jitter absolute (Jabs), shimmer local (Slocal), shimmer decibel (SdB), and harmonics to noise ratio (HNR) were detected using the Praat software program. RESULTS Only for Jabs, statically significant difference was found between the groups. There were no statically significant differences between any voice parameters of HV versus those with the duration of diabetes ≥10 years and the HbA1c level ≥7%. However, statically significant differences for MPT and Slocal were found between patients with neuropathy versus HV. In addition, a comparison between patients with voice complaint versus HV showed significant differences for Slocal and SdB. CONCLUSIONS The findings of the present study do not provide strong evidence about the possible effect of DM on the human voice. However, diabetic neuropathy is considered to be a factor affecting the voice parameters in the target population. The physicians should pay attention to the acoustic and aerodynamic voice parameters in patients with diabetes, particularly in those with neuropathy or voice complaints.

Abstract
Handgrip strength (HGS) is a functional test that has been directly associated with lung function in some healthy populations; however, inconsistent findings have been reported for populations with chronic diseases. The aim of this study was to identify the relationship between HGS and lung function in both healthy and unhealthy adults. A systematic search was conducted using six databases from their earliest inception to February 29, 2020. Two authors reviewed and assessed methodological quality of eligible studies using the Crowe Critical Appraisal Tool (CCAT). Twenty-five studies met the inclusion criteria with 8 and 17 studies examining healthy and unhealthy populations, respectively. Reported average methodological quality of all included studies using the CCAT was 38-85% with most rated as Good to Excellent. Despite the use of heterogeneous equipment and protocols during HGS and lung function assessments, significant positive and moderate correlations and/or regression coefficients were reported for healthy populations consistently. Conversely, the reported relationships between HGS and lung function for unhealthy counterparts were variable. Handgrip strength was significantly associated with lung function in most healthy adults. Future robust studies are needed to confirm the suitability of HGS to assess lung function for healthy and unhealthy adults.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the cognitive function in people without diabetes, with prediabetes and with diabetes. METHODS/DESIGN The study design used was a cross-sectional analysis of data in people above 60 years registered in NHANES from 2011 to 2014.Three assessments were used to characterize cognitive function: (a) CERAD Word Learning subtest assessing immediate and delayed learning ability, (b) The Animal Fluency test assesing categorical verbal fluency, and (c) The Digit Symbol Substitution test assessing processing speed, sustained attention, and working memory. RESULTS (A) Memory recall (-0.19, [-0.34; -0.039], p = 0.014) and Delayed memory recall decline was associated with diabetes (-0.285, [-0.503; -0.067], p = 0.01), but not in an adjusted analysis. (B) Animal Fluency score decline was associated with diabetes (-1.185, [-1.688; -0.682], p < 0.001). (C) Digit Symbol score decline was associated with diabetes (-6.897, [-8.491; -5.302], p < 0.001). Prediabetes was not associated with cognitive function. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates an association between cognitive dysfunction and diabetes. Results may also indicate that cognitive decline is not yet present in people with mild impairments of glucose homeostasis.

Abstract
Upper limb performance is affected by diabetes mellitus (DM). Neuromuscular junction (NMJ) is a key structure to understand the relationship between performance and morphology in DM. The aim of the study was to analyze NMJ plasticity due to DM in an animal model and its relationship with the function of forelimbs in rats. Twelve Wistar rats were divided into control (C) and DM groups. Animals were trained to perform a grasping task, following procedures of habituation, shaping, and reaching task. DM was induced using streptozotocin. Forelimb neuromuscular performance for dexterity was evaluated one day before DM induction and five weeks following induction. After that, biceps, triceps, and finger flexors and extensors were removed. Connective tissue and muscle fiber cross-sectional area (CSA) were measured. NMJ was assessed by its morphometric characteristics (area, perimeter, and maximum diameter), using ImageJ software. Motor performance analyses were made using single pellet retrieval task performance test. Student’s t-test was used for comparisons between groups. A significant decrease in all NMJ morphometric parameters was observed in the DM group compared with the C group. Results showed that DM generated NMJ retraction in muscles involved in a reaching task. These alterations are related to signs of muscular atrophy and to poor reaching task performance. In conclusion, induced DM caused NMJ retraction and muscular atrophy in muscles involved in reaching task performance. Induced DM caused significantly lower motor performance, especially in the final moments of evaluation, when DM compromised the tropism of the muscular tissue.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Handgrip strength (HGS) has been widely studied in clinical and epidemiological settings, but the relationship between HGS and pulmonary function is still controversial. This study analysed pulmonary function and HGS stratified by sex and age in a healthy Chinese Han population, as well as the associations between HGS and pulmonary function parameters. METHODS HGS was measured by a Jamar dynamometer and pulmonary function was tested using a portable spirometer. Frequencies and variables are presented as percentages and means ± standard deviations, respectively. Chi-square tests were used for comparisons of categorical variables, and Student's t-tests or Mann-Whitney U-tests were used for continuous variables. Pearson's correlation coefficients were used to analyse the normally distributed variables, and Spearman correlation coefficients were used to analyse the non-normally distributed variables. Multivariate linear regression models were employed to explore the relationships between HGS and parameters of pulmonary function. The statistical significance was set at p < 0.01. RESULTS Cross-sectional data were available for 1519 subjects (59.0% females, 57.9 ± 13.3 years old). Males had higher average HGS than females (40.2 vs. 25.0 kg, p < 0.01), as well as better pulmonary function. Both HGS and pulmonary function parameters were significantly inversely correlated with age (r ≤ - 0.30, p < 0.01). The maximum value of vital capacity (VC max), forced expiratory volume in 3 s (FEV 3) and forced vital capacity (FVC) were strongly correlated with HGS among the pulmonary function indices (r = 0.72, 0.70 and 0.69, respectively, p < 0.001). In the multivariate linear regression analysis, HGS and height were positively correlated, while age and pulse pressure were negatively correlated with HGS. In males, the FVC, VC max and FEV3 increased by 0.02 L, 0.023 L and 0.03 L in per 1 kg increase in HGS, respectively. The HGS coefficients for females were smaller than those for males. CONCLUSIONS Both pulmonary function and HGS were inversely correlated with age, and better pulmonary function was associated with greater handgrip strength.

Several controversial studies linking handgrip strength and health have suggested that low handgrip strength in older adults may be related to health problems and have investigated whether there is a minimum handgrip strength level associated with reduced mortality. Thus, by meta-analysis, the authors identified an association between handgrip strength in older adults and disease-specific mortality and all-cause mortality. Thirty studies with a total of 194,767 older adult participants were included in this meta-analysis. Higher handgrip strength was associated with an 18% decrease in all-cause mortality. Lower handgrip strength was associated with increased all-cause mortality. The minimum handgrip strength in older women that did not increase all-cause mortality was 18.21 kg. Increased handgrip strength showed a decreased all-cause mortality, whereas decreased handgrip strength was associated with increased all-cause mortality. Strengthening the handgrip may help improve disease-specific mortality in older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Restrictive lung pathology was reported in the previous meta-analysis among patients with Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) which is date back to 2010. OBJECTIVE To see the effect of T2DM on pulmonary functions through updated systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SOURCE PubMed. STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA English language case-control or cross-sectional studies, published between 1 January 2010 to 31 August 2018. PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTION T2DM and non-diabetic subjects were compared for at least one of the pulmonary function variables i.e. Forced expiratory volume in 1st second (FEV1), % FEV1, Forced vital capacity (FVC), % FVC and % FEV1/FVC. STUDY APPRAISAL AND SYNTHESIS METHODS Methodological quality of the study was assessed using Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. Meta-analysis was done using Review Manager 5.3 (RevMan 5.3) and meta-regression was conducted using R statistical software. RESULTS We selected 22 articles that met our inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results reveal that among patients with T2DM all variables were reduced except %FEV1/FVC which shows statistically nonsignificant results with P=0.46. This confirms that T2DM patients have a restrictive type of lung pathology. LIMITATION Only articles from the PubMed database were included. Conclusion and Implications of Key Findings: This review affirms the existing evidence of restrictive pathology among patients with T2DM. The future study could be conducted to see the effect of various rehabilitation protocols on pulmonary function among patients with T2DM.

Abstract
Background The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between handgrip strength and prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes in older adults. Methods A total of 4,186 participants 65 years of age and older was included in the study, which utilized data from the fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Pearson’s chi-square tests were used to explore the relationship between frequency of participation in physical activity and handgrip strength. The relationships between handgrip strength and prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes were determined by logistic regression. Results Older adults with higher handgrip strength participated more frequently in walking (right hand, 3.71 day/wk; left hand, 3.80 day/wk), strength (right hand, 1.40 day/wk; left hand, 1.43 day/wk), and flexibility exercises (both hands, 2.08 day/wk) than those with lower handgrip strength (right hand, 2.83 day/wk and left hand, 2.81 day/wk for walking; right hand, 0.18 day/wk and left hand, 0.22 day/wk for strength; right hand, 1.17 day/wk and left hand, 1.24 day/wk for flexibility). Higher handgrip strength was associated with reduced prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis (right hand: odds ratio [OR], 0.29; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.16–0.52; P<0.05; left hand: OR, 0.20; 95% CI, 0.10–0.38; P<0.05) and diabetes (right hand: OR, 0.71; 95% CI, 0.57–0.89; P<0.05; left hand: OR, 0.71; 95% CI, 0.58–0.88; P<0.05). Conclusion Enhanced handgrip strength was significantly associated with lower prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes in older adults. Participating in physical activity should be recommended to older adults for maintaining handgrip strength.
