Abstract
BACKGROUND The available limited literature and Centers for Disease Control data suggest that human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination acceptance is lower among Asian Indians than the general population in the United States. PURPOSE The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of health beliefs, subjective norms, acculturation, and demographics on HPV vaccination acceptance among Asian Indian parents. METHODOLOGY Using a comparative descriptive cross-sectional study design, immigrant and first-generation Asian Indian parents of 9- to 16-year-old children were recruited (N = 171). The survey comprised the Health Belief and Subjective Norms instrument and the Suinn-Lew Asian Self-Identity Acculturation Scale. The analysis included parametric and nonparametric tests. RESULTS Participants who expressed higher levels of perceived barriers were less likely to accept HPV vaccination (odds ratio [OR] = 0.47, p = .016). Spousal opinion negatively correlated with HPV vaccination acceptance (OR = 0.57, p = .006). However, subjective norms positively predicted HPV vaccination acceptance (OR = 1.69, p = .039). Participants who perceived that friends and family approved of the vaccination also had significantly higher rates of vaccination acceptance (OR = 11.99, p = .001). CONCLUSIONS The results revealed unique factors in the acceptance of HPV vaccination in Asian Indians that were not examined or understood before. The applied Health Beliefs and Subjective Norms theoretical framework suggested that perceived barriers, subjective norms, and the opinions of spouses, friends, and family predicted HPV vaccination acceptance. IMPLICATIONS Educational interventions targeting providers, spouses, family, and community members with influential effects on parents may positively affect HPV vaccination acceptance. Providers should note that this population welcomes the provider's recommendations.

Abstract
Purpose: To determine college students' intentions to be Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinated. Methods: The study was comprised of college students aged 18-45 years. A survey was developed based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The significance of the TPB constructs-attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control-and an additional construct-knowledge-in predicting intention were assessed. Results: The regression model containing attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control accounted for 40% of the variance in intention. Attitude and subjective norms were significant predictors, while perceived behavioral control was not. Provider recommendation was the only significant covariate. Knowledge did not significantly contribute to the model. Discussion: The TPB was useful in predicting HPV vaccination intentions. A focus on attitude, subjective norms and provider recommendation may be useful in creating new or enhancing existing interventions.

Abstract
HPV vaccination rates remain suboptimal in the United States. While the current literature focuses on expressly hesitant parents, few studies have examined parents with "high intent", or those indicating they definitely will vaccinate and have had the opportunity but not yet vaccinated their adolescents. Our objective was to differentiate characteristics of mothers with high intent from those who already vaccinated their adolescents using various socioeconomic, previous vaccine decision-making, and healthcare provider relationship-related variables. English-speaking mothers or female guardians of adolescents ages 11-14 years living in low HPV vaccine uptake states within the U.S. in September 2018 were recruited from a national survey panel as part of a larger study. We assessed HPV vaccine status of their adolescents and categorized respondents into two categories: Already Vaccinated and High Intent. We assessed differences using a multivariable logistic regression model. Among 2406 mothers, 18% reported high intent vs. 82% already having vaccinated. Mothers with high intent were more likely to identify as non-Hispanic White (p = 0.01), to have a younger adolescent (p < 0.001), and to report not receiving a provider HPV vaccination recommendation (p < 0.001). Mothers who estimated that half/more (vs. less) of their child's friends have received/will receive the vaccine had higher odds of already vaccinating (p < 0.001). Our findings suggest that clinicians may be able to improve HPV vaccination uptake within their practices by giving repeated, high-quality recommendations to parents of children who are not yet vaccinated. Additionally, these findings indicate perceived social norms may play a large role in on-time vaccine uptake. Reassuring hesitant parents that most parents accept the vaccine may also improve uptake in clinical practice.

Abstract
Introduction Compared to other-race peers, Black women are disproportionately impacted by human papillomavirus [HPV] infection, related health outcomes, and cervical cancer mortality as a result of suboptimal HPV vaccine uptake during adolescence. Few studies in the United States have examined psychosocial determinants of HPV vaccine acceptability and hesitancy among Black parents. The current study integrated the health belief model and the theory of planned behavior to evaluate the extent to which psychosocial factors are associated with pediatric HPV vaccination intentions among this population. Methods Black mothers (N = 402; age range = 25 to 69 years, M = 37.45, SD = 7.88) of daughters ages 9 to 15 years completed an online survey assessing HPV infection and vaccine beliefs and attitudes across four domains: Mother's HPV Perceptions, Mother's Vaccine Attitudes, Cues to Action, and Perceived Barriers to HPV Vaccination. Participants indicated their willingness to vaccinate their daughter on a 5-level ordinal scale ("I will definitely not have my daughter get the vaccine" to "I will definitely have my daughter get the vaccine") which was dichotomously recoded for binomial logistic regressions. Results Half of the sample (48%) intended to vaccinate their daughter. Number of daughters, mother's HPV vaccine status, perceived HPV vaccine benefits, HPV vaccine safety concerns, pediatric HPV vaccine peer norms, and doctor recommendations emerged as independent factors of Black mothers' intentions to vaccinate their daughters against HPV when controlling for all other factors. Discussion In addition to medical training to increase doctor recommendation of the HPV vaccine for Black girls, population-tailored public health messaging aimed at promoting HPV vaccine acceptance among Black mothers is urgently needed. This messaging should engage community support and emphasize the benefits of vaccination for adolescent Black girls while also addressing parental concerns regarding the safety of pediatric HPV vaccination.

Abstract
Background The control of vaccine hesitancy and the promotion of vaccination are key protective measures against COVID-19. Objective This study assesses the prevalence of vaccine hesitancy and the vaccination rate and examines the association between factors of the health belief model (HBM) and vaccination. Methods A convenience sample of 2531 valid participants from 31 provinces and autonomous regions of mainland China were enrolled in this online survey study from January 1 to 24, 2021. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify the associations of the vaccination rate and HBM factors with the prevalence of vaccine hesitancy after other covariates were controlled. Results The prevalence of vaccine hesitancy was 44.3% (95% CI 42.3%-46.2%), and the vaccination rate was 10.4% (9.2%-11.6%). The factors that directly promoted vaccination behavior were a lack of vaccine hesitancy (odds ratio [OR] 7.75, 95% CI 5.03-11.93), agreement with recommendations from friends or family for vaccination (OR 3.11, 95% CI 1.75-5.52), and absence of perceived barriers to COVID-19 vaccination (OR 0.51, 95% CI 0.35-0.75). The factors that were directly associated with a higher vaccine hesitancy rate were a high level of perceived barriers (OR 1.63, 95% CI 1.36-1.95) and perceived benefits (OR 0.51, 95% CI 0.32-0.79). A mediating effect of self-efficacy, influenced by perceived barriers (standardized structure coefficient [SSC]=−0.71, P<.001), perceived benefits (SSC=0.58, P<.001), agreement with recommendations from authorities (SSC=0.27, P<.001), and agreement with recommendations from friends or family (SSC=0.31, P<.001), was negatively associated with vaccination (SSC=−0.45, P<.001) via vaccine hesitancy (SSC=−0.32, P<.001). Conclusions It may be possible to increase the vaccination rate by reducing vaccine hesitancy and perceived barriers to vaccination and by encouraging volunteers to advocate for vaccination to their friends and family members. It is also important to reduce vaccine hesitancy by enhancing self-efficacy for vaccination, due to its crucial mediating function.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to investigate parents' acceptability of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination for their daughters and associated factors. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted in a city in China with a sample population of parents with a daughter in middle school. Participants' demographic characteristics, knowledge level regarding HPV and the HPV vaccine, perspectives on the health belief model (HBM) constructs, social norms, and acceptability of the HPV vaccine were determined through self-administered questionnaires. RESULTS Among the 523 parents who completed the questionnaire, 71.5% expressed willingness to have their daughters vaccinated against HPV infection and cervical cancer. Logistic regression analysis revealed higher acceptability in the participants with higher perceived severity of HPV infection (OR = 4.823, 95% CI = 2.683, 12.049), higher knowledge-assessment score (OR = 1.298, 95% CI = 1.055, 1.476), and higher perceived safety of the HPV vaccine (OR = 6.372, 95% CI = 3.856, 14.062). Parents influenced by social norms (OR = 4.959, 95% CI = 2.989, 14.386) and those who complied with physicians' recommendations (OR = 4.896, 95% CI = 1.936, 9.258) reported higher levels of acceptability. IMPLICATIONS Our results provide preliminary evidence on the need for health education programs and HPV vaccination campaigns. Future studies should focus on whether the factors associated with vaccination can increase parental acceptability of the HPV vaccine.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human papillomavirus (HPV) is largely vaccine preventable. The Healthy People 2020 target goal for vaccine administration is 80%. Current United States (U. S.) rates are far lower primarily because of vaccine hesitancy and lack of provider recommendation. OBJECTIVE Implement a risk reduction initiative to increase HPV vaccine rates in females aged 12-26 in five rural counties in Maryland. METHODS A convenience sample from a rural community screened an HPV documentary movie, Questionnaire responses pre- and postscreening were surveyed for impact on vaccine readiness. Postscreening focus group comments were analyzed for common themes. Females aged 12-26 from a University Medical Group Women's Health Center located in rural Maryland were targeted. Chart review of immunization records 90 days pre- and postprovider vaccine recommendation demonstrated impact. RESULTS Public awareness events have the potential to impact HPV vaccine hesitancy, but this research did not achieve statistical significance. Direct provider to patient recommendations resulted in a 15% increase in HPV immunizations. CONCLUSIONS Education of vaccine-eligible individuals should be undertaken. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING Providers who recommend administration of the vaccine significantly increase immunization rates.

Abstract
Objective: The current study examined the role of family influences on the vaccine behavior of emerging adults. Participants: In Spring 2017, we conducted anonymous online surveys of undergraduate students (n = 608) at a large, public university in the mid-Atlantic. Methods: Logistic regression was used to examine associations between family factors and students' awareness of the HPV vaccine, vaccine receipt, and vaccine intentions. Family factors included sex communication, religiosity, parental monitoring, family structure, and parents' birthplace. Results: More comprehensive family sex communication is associated with less uncertainty regarding HPV vaccine receipt and greater likelihood of being already vaccinated. More frequent family religiosity and more parental monitoring are associated with greater likelihood of having decided against vaccination rather than already being vaccinated. Significant gender and racial disparities exist. Conclusion: Further research, policy, and programmatic intervention are needed to reduce disparities and to improve emerging adults' compliance with HPV vaccine recommendations.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify the impacts of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination-related health belief, attitudes toward HPV vaccination, and subjective norms on HPV vaccination intent targeting mothers of elementary school daughters. METHODS The study use a correlative survey design. The subjects of the study were 121 mothers of elementary school daughters located in metropolitan city B. All subjects agreed to participate in the study. The data were collected from September 1 to October 18, 2018, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Independent t-test, ANOVA with a post hoc Scheffé test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. RESULTS Attitude toward HPV vaccination, subjective norms, vaccination plans for their children, and mother's vaccination status were significant factors influencing HPV vaccination intention. These factors accounted for 72% of the HPV vaccination intention. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that factors affecting the intention of mothers of elementary school daughters to vaccinate against HPV were HPV vaccination attitudes, subjective norms, vaccination plans for their children, and mother's vaccination status. The biggest influencing factor was HPV vaccination attitudes. Therefore, in order to encourage mothers of elementary school daughters to vaccinate against HPVs, national-level policies should be implemented to create a social atmosphere of positive attitudes toward HPV vaccinations that also emphasizes how easy it is to get vaccinated against HPV. Based on this, mothers of elementary school daughters should be encouraged to have them vaccinated against HPV, thus contributing to improving the HPV vaccination rates of elementary school girls.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interventions to increase uptake of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination by young women may be more effective if they are underpinned by an appropriate theoretical model or framework. The aims of this review were: to describe the theoretical models or frameworks used to explain behaviours in relation to HPV vaccination of young women, and: to consider the appropriateness of the theoretical models or frameworks used for informing the development of interventions to increase uptake. METHODS Primary studies were identified through a comprehensive search of databases from inception to December 2013. RESULTS Thirty-four relevant studies were identified, of which 31 incorporated psychological health behaviour models or frameworks and three used socio-cultural models or theories. The primary studies used a variety of approaches to measure a diverse range of outcomes in relation to behaviours of professionals, parents, and young women. The majority appeared to use theory appropriately throughout. About half of the quantitative studies presented data in relation to goodness of fit tests and the proportion of the variability in the data. CONCLUSION Due to diverse approaches and inconsistent findings across studies, the current contribution of theory to understanding and promoting HPV vaccination uptake is difficult to assess. Ecological frameworks encourage the integration of individual and social approaches by encouraging exploration of the intrapersonal, interpersonal, organisational, community and policy levels when examining public health issues. Given the small number of studies using such approach, combined with the importance of these factors in predicting behaviour, more research in this area is warranted.

Abstract
AIMS To identify the current status of theory evaluation in nursing and provide directions for theory evaluation for future development of theoretical bases of nursing discipline. BACKGROUND Theory evaluation is an essential component in development of nursing knowledge, which is a critical element in development of nursing discipline. Despite earlier significant efforts for theory evaluation in nursing, a recent decline in the number of theory evaluation articles was noted and there have been few updates on theory evaluation in nursing. DESIGN Discussion paper. DATA SOURCES A total of 58 articles published from 2003-2014 were retrieved through searches using the PUBMED, PsyInfo and CINAHL. The articles were sorted by the area of evaluation and analysed to identify themes reflecting the theory evaluation process. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING Diverse ways of theory evaluation need to be continuously used in future theory evaluation efforts. CONCLUSION Six themes reflecting the theory evaluation process were identified: (a) rarely using existing theory evaluation criteria; (b) evaluating specifics; (c) using various statistical analysis methods; (d) developing instruments; (e) adopting in practice and education; and (f) evaluating mainly middle-range theories and situation-specific theories.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate adolescent vaccination in New York City, we assessed tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap), meningococcal conjugate (MCV4), and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine uptake, vaccine co-administration, and catch-up coverage over time. METHODS We analyzed data from the Citywide Immunization Registry, a population-based immunization information system, to measure vaccine uptake and co-administration, defined as a Tdap vaccination visit where MCV4 or HPV vaccine was co-administered, among 11-year-olds. Catch-up vaccinations were evaluated through 2013 for adolescents born 1996 to 2000, by birth cohort. HPV vaccination among boys included data from 2010 to 2013. RESULTS Adolescent vaccine administration was greatest during the back-to-school months of August to October and was highest for Tdap. Although MCV4 uptake improved over the study years, HPV vaccine uptake among girls stagnated; boys achieved similar uptake of HPV vaccine by 2012. By 2013, 65.4% had MCV4 co-administered with Tdap vaccine, whereas 28.4% of girls and 25.9% of boys had their first dose of HPV vaccine co-administered. By age 17, Tdap and MCV4 vaccination coverage increased to 97.5% and 92.8%, respectively, whereas ≥1-dose and 3-dose HPV vaccination coverage were, respectively, 77.5% and 53.1% for girls and 49.3% and 21.6% for boys. Age-specific vaccination coverage increased with each successive birth cohort (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS From 2007 to 2013, there were greater improvements in Tdap and MCV4 vaccination than HPV vaccination, for which co-administration with Tdap vaccine and coverage through adolescence remained lower. Parent and provider outreach efforts should promote timely HPV vaccination for all adolescents and vaccine co-administration.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to examine HPV vaccine knowledge and acceptability among ethnically diverse Black women. Forty-four women were interviewed in 6 focus groups (2 African American, 2 English-speaking Caribbean, 1 Haitian, and 1 African). Thematic content analysis was used to generate common concepts and themes and to compare findings across groups. There was varied but limited knowledge and confusion across ethnic groups about the HPV infection and vaccine. African and Haitian women had the least knowledge. Overall, women were generally receptive toward the HPV vaccine for girls but unclear about the need to vaccinate boys. Concerns about the HPV vaccine were mainly related to side effects/safety and vaccinating children at a young age. Healthcare provider's recommendation of the vaccination was important for decision making. Educational interventions with Black women about HPV vaccination should recognize cultural beliefs that vary by ethnic group.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Since licensure of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in 2006, HPV vaccine coverage among US adolescents has increased but remains low compared with other recommended vaccines. OBJECTIVE To systematically review the literature on barriers to HPV vaccination among US adolescents to inform future efforts to increase HPV vaccine coverage. EVIDENCE REVIEW We searched PubMed and previous review articles to identify original research articles describing barriers to HPV vaccine initiation and completion among US adolescents. Only articles reporting data collected in 2009 or later were included. Findings from 55 relevant articles were summarized by target populations: health care professionals, parents, underserved and disadvantaged populations, and males. FINDINGS Health care professionals cited financial concerns and parental attitudes and concerns as barriers to providing the HPV vaccine to patients. Parents often reported needing more information before vaccinating their children. Concerns about the vaccine's effect on sexual behavior, low perceived risk of HPV infection, social influences, irregular preventive care, and vaccine cost were also identified as potential barriers among parents. Some parents of sons reported not vaccinating their sons because of the perceived lack of direct benefit. Parents consistently cited health care professional recommendations as one of the most important factors in their decision to vaccinate their children. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Continued efforts are needed to ensure that health care professionals and parents understand the importance of vaccinating adolescents before they become sexually active. Health care professionals may benefit from guidance on communicating HPV recommendations to patients and parents. Further efforts are also needed to reduce missed opportunities for HPV vaccination when adolescents interface with the health care system. Efforts to increase uptake should take into account the specific needs of subgroups within the population. Efforts that address system-level barriers to vaccination may help to increase overall HPV vaccine uptake.
