The Effect of Aromatherapy Massage on Knee Pain and Functional Status in Participants with Osteoarthritis

Effects of Rosa damascena on Labor Pain and Anxiety in Primiparous Women

This study aimed to investigate the effect of Damask rose aromatherapy on pain and anxiety in primiparas during the incubation and latent periods of the first stage of labor. The study randomly divided participants into aroma, placebo, and control groups. The control group received daily care, while the aroma group received at least 30 minutes of aromatherapy. The placebo group received the same aromatherapy device as the aroma group but inhaled saline. Pain, anxiety, and uterine contractions were measured at enrollment and at 30, 60, and 120 minutes. Data from 76 participants were analyzed, and the results showed that the aroma group had lower anxiety and pain scores than the placebo and control groups at 60 and 120 minutes. Additionally, the effect gradually appeared and was maintained even with increased contractions. Damask rose aromatherapy can be used as a safe and effective adjuvant therapy for reducing the anxiety and pain of women in the latent period of labor.

The effect of the hand massage using baby oil with lavender application on the procedural pain and state anxiety of women undergoing brachytherapy: A parallel-group randomized controlled study

OBJECTIVE

This parallel-group randomized controlled study evaluated the effect of the hand massage practiced using baby oil with lavender on reducing pain and situational anxiety in women with brachytherapy.

METHODS

The study was completed with 36 patients. The treatment group included 18 patients, and the control group had 18. The data were collected through patient information form, visual analog scale, and state anxiety scale. Before the brachytherapy, three sessions of hand massages, each lasting 10 min (5 min for each hand), were performed using baby oil with lavender. Data collection forms were repeated after each session. The control group received routine treatment. Study groups were similar and homogeneous in terms of socio-demographic characteristics. The data obtained were assessed using Shapiro Wilk, Repeated Measures ANOVA, chi-square, and paired samples t-test.

RESULTS

At the end of the brachytherapy, the pain and state anxiety scores of the group that applied hand massage   were determined to be lower than the control group's at each three-time point (1st, 2nd, and 3rd-time points) (p<0.001).

CONCLUSION

It was determined that hand massage using baby oil with lavender effectively reduced pain and anxiety. It can be practiced by certified nurses in clinics that perform brachytherapy as a noninvasive, safe, and affordable practice.

The effects of aromatherapy massage in menopausal women with knee osteoarthritis: A randomized controlled study

OBJECTIVE

Knee Osteoarthritis (OA)'s prevalence increases during menopause. Aromatherapy massage with different oils is applied in the treatment of knee OA. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of aromatherapy massage with Bergamot essential oil (BEO) on pain, functionality, sleep quality and menopausal symptoms in menopausal women with knee OA.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This study included 60 menopausal participants diagnosed with grade II-III OA. Participants were randomly divided into three groups: BEO (n=20), placebo (n=20) and control (n=20). The participants in the BEO group, received aromatherapy massage with BEO, in the placebo group aromatherapy massage with sweet almond oil was applied twice a week for 4 weeks. All participants underwent conventional physiotherapy. Visual Analog Scale was used to assess the severity of pain, Osteoarthritis Index to assess functionality, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index to assess sleep quality and Menopausal Symptoms Rating Scale to assess menopausal symptoms. All measurements were performed before and after the study.

RESULTS

The results of the study showed that all three groups were effective on pain, functionality, sleep quality and menopausal symptoms (p<0.001). The results of the study showed that, aromatherapy massage with BEO was found to be more effective on functionality (p<0.001), pain (p<0.001) and menopausal symptoms (somatic and psychological symptoms) (p<0.001) compared to the control and placebo groups. It was determined that aromatherapy massage with BEO did not create a significant difference between the sleep quality scale scores in the control group and the placebo group (p=0.454).

CONCLUSION

This study found that aromatherapy massage with BEO improved functionality, reduced pain and menopausal symptoms, and did not affect sleep quality. We consider that its application in addition to routine treatment may be useful to reduce symptoms.

Current Status of Research on Tuina for Analgesia: A Bibliometric and Visual Analysis

Purpose

Tuina is a nonpharmacological modality for pain relief that has found applications in the treatment of several pain disorders. Tuina analgesia has been increasingly studied; however, few studies have focused on the previous publication trends, prevalent research areas, collaborations, and other factors. This study aimed to systematically analyze research trends and hot topics in the field of tuina analgesia over the past 30 years, using bibliometric analysis, to inform future research.

Methods

The web of science database was searched for literature on tuina analgesia from 1992-2023. VOSviewer and CiteSpace were used to analyze annual publication volumes, countries, institutions, journals and CO-cited journals, authorship, articles, and keywords and their relevance, and to perform co-occurrence and clustering analyses.

Results

A total of 621 literature elements were included in the analysis. The annual volume of publications has increased steadily in recent years. The top three high-yielding countries were the United States, China, and Canada, respectively. The top three institutional outputs were from Shanghai University of Chinese medicine, Beijing University of Chinese medicine, and McMaster University, respectively. Notably, there was an imbalance between national outputs and centrality, with higher centrality in the United States (0.35) and lower in China (0.01). Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews was the journal with the most publications (22), and PAIN was the most influential co-cited journals (publications=306). Moreover, current research in this field was dominated by studies on Tuina for relieving postoperative pain, the effectiveness of Tuina analgesia, and Tuina treatment for pain accompanied by anxiety.

Conclusion

This study employed bibliometrics to analyze the literature on Tuina for pain treatment over a 30-year period, identifying potential collaborators, institutions, hot topics, and future research trends that will inform potential future directions.

The Use of Lavender Aromatherapy for Pain After Total Hip and Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Randomized Trial

A randomized clinical trial was conducted over a threemonth period with 102 participants undergoing a total hip arthroplasty (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The study purpose was to assess whether there was a reduction in the use of opioids in the postoperative period for THA or TKA participants that utilized lavender aromatherapy as an adjunct to pain medication. The participants in the control and intervention group were administered nonopioid pain medication around the clock and opioids as needed after surgery. However, the intervention group also received a pre-packaged lavender essential oil inhaler. Total oral morphine equivalents (OME) were calculated for each participant to determine opioid usage. Although the total OME was similar for the groups overall, the total OME was slightly lower for THA patients that were enrolled in the intervention group (median 22.5) compared to THA patients that were enrolled in the control group (median 31.2). In the intervention group, 58% of participants reported that the lavender inhaler was a useful tool for pain management and 76% indicated they would continue to use the lavender inhaler after discharge.

The Effects of Self-Aromatherapy Massage on Pain and Sleep Quality in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Randomized Controlled Trial

BACKGROUND

Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis and can lead to pain, joint deformity, and disability, resulting in poor sleep quality and lower quality of life. The efficacy of aromatherapy massage on pain levels and sleep quality among rheumatoid arthritis patients remains unclear.

AIMS

To investigate the effects of aromatherapy on pain and sleep quality among rheumatoid arthritis patients.

METHODS

This randomized controlled trial enrolled 102 patients with rheumatoid arthritis from one regional hospital in Taoyuan, Taiwan. Patients were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 32), placebo (n = 36), or control groups (n = 34). The intervention and placebo groups underwent self-aromatherapy hand massage guided by a self-aromatherapy hand massage manual and video for 10 minutes 3 times a week for 3 weeks. The intervention group used 5% compound essential oils, the placebo group used sweet almond oil, and the control group had no intervention. Pain, sleep quality and sleepiness were measured by using the numerical rating scale for pain, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale at baseline and at 1, 2, and 3 weeks after the intervention.

RESULTS

The intervention and placebo groups had significantly decreased sleep quality and sleepiness scores from baseline to 3 weeks after aromatherapy massage. Compared with the control group, the intervention group showed statistically significant improvement in the sleep quality scores in the first weeks after aromatherapy massage (B = -1.19, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -2.35, -0.02, P =.046), but no statistically significant differences were found in the changes in pain levels from baseline to the three time points.

CONCLUSIONS

Aromatherapy massage is effective in improving sleep quality in rheumatoid arthritis patients. More studies are needed to evaluate the effects of aromatherapy hand massage on the pain levels of rheumatoid arthritis patients.

The effect of eucalyptus inhalation on pain and the quality of life in rheumatoid arthritis

Problem considered

Pain is one of the most significant symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis that reduce the quality of life. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of eucalyptus on pain and the quality of life in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Methods

In this randomized clinical trial, 70 patients with rheumatoid arthritis were selected by random sampling. In the eucalyptus group, 1 mL of eucalyptus oil was inhaled for 5 min, 3 times a day, for one month. The control group received placebo inhalation. Both groups used routine treatments. Data were collected using a questionnaire of demographics, the numerical pain rating scale (NRS), and Quality of Life (SF-12). Statistical analysis was done using 19th edition SPSS software and applied on paired t-test, chi-square, Fisher's exact test, and analysis of covariance.

Results

The mean score of pain severity in the eucalyptus group significantly decreased in comparison with the control group (P < 0.001). The severity of pain there was no statistical difference in both groups before, the first, and the second weeks after the intervention, (p > 0.05); however, in the third and fourth weeks after the intervention, the mean severity of pain in the eucalyptus group was lower than in the control group, and these differences were statistically significant between the two groups (p < 0.05). Also, the patients' quality of life in the eucalyptus group was increased significantly (P < 0.001).

Conclusion

The eucalyptus leads to pain reduction, and consequently, improves the quality of life of patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Aromatherapy in Nursing and Midwifery Practice: A Scoping Review of Published Studies Since 2005

Background: Since the 1990's aromatherapy has been a popular adjunct to nursing and midwifery care in a variety of health care settings. Objective: The scoping review seeks to identify and confirm the benefits of incorporating aromatherapy into holistic nursing and midwifery practice Design: A scoping review using PRISMA-ScR of experimental studies where care is provided to the patient by a registered nurse or midwife. Settings and participants: Any health care setting where nurses or midwives provide care. Review Methods: A multi- engine search using a range of MeSH and non-MeSH terms with the Boolean search [AND]. Inclusion criteria were; publication date from 2005-2021, study involved aromatherapy as an intervention, conducted in a clinical nursing or midwifery environment and the published article is available in full in English. Excluded were; single patient cases, animal studies, in vitro studies, use of essential oils internally or a whole plant extract was used or use was non-nursing/midwifery related. Results: 124 studies met the inclusion criteria (n = 19188), classified into seven themes. Conclusion: The evidence supports the use of aromatherapy within a range of nursing and midwifery practices enhancing a holistic model of care. Impact: This scoping review contributes evidence to support the inclusion of aromatherapy into holistic nursing and midwifery practice.

Effects of Swedish massage on gait spatiotemporal parameters in adult women with medial knee osteoarthritis: A randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) are always faced with functional limitations in daily activities due to knee pain. They are also at risk of falling because of compensatory kinetics and kinematics changes in walking, which is why they are seeking complementary therapies to deal with their problems.

OBJECTIVE

The present research aimed to evaluate whether Swedish massage is effective in relieving the symptoms of knee OA and improving the gait spatiotemporal parameters of patients with knee OA.

METHODS

Thirty adult women with knee OA participated in this study voluntarily. The intervention group (n = 15) received Swedish massage on their quadriceps for 20-30 min per session (12 sessions). During this period, the control group (n = 15) received their regular treatment. Osteoarthritis symptoms were evaluated by the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index. The spatiotemporal parameters of gait were also captured by the motion analysis system during barefoot walking.

RESULTS

The intervention group demonstrated significantly more pain relief and improved function compared to the control group. A significant increase was observed in the gait speed, total support time, and single support time (P < 0.05). Moreover, there was a significant decrease in the step width and initial double support time of the patients after receiving Swedish massage (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

It can be concluded that Swedish massage may positively affect pain relief and function improvement in patients with knee OA. Also, Swedish massage was found to improve the spatiotemporal parameters in the patients. This may have important clinical implications regarding the rehabilitation of patients with knee OA.

Evaluating the Aromatherapy Recommendation for Pain in the Holistic Nurses' Pain Relief Tools for Patients and Self-Care

Purpose of Study: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the usefulness of the aromatherapy (AT) recommendation in the American Holistic Nurses Association's (AHNA's) Holistic Nurses' Pain Relief Tools for Patients and Self-Care (Pain Tool). Methodology: An observational survey design was used and a purposeful sample of 55 nurses were invited to a two-part, 15-question survey administered via SurveyMonkey. The demographic data were analyzed with quantitative analysis and the open-ended questions were analyzed via content analysis. Results: A total of 55 registered nurses completed the survey and the mean age of participants was 53 years old. Lavender essential oil (EO) was used by 100% (N = 55) of participants and the inhalation method was favored (93%; n = 51). The AT recommendation was most helpful for educational purposes (29%; n = 16) and to reduce symptoms of pain (21%; n = 8). A majority of participants used the five holistic nursing core values (70%; n = 31) as well as promote more options for pain management (48%; n = 13) to improve outcomes (30%; n = 13). Respondents recommend the addition of more EOs and safety information (23%; n = 8). Finally, five recommendations were made to AHNA. Implication for Practice: Nurses who use AT (guideline) as a safe, cost-effective intervention for pain improve quality outcomes.

Essential oil therapy in rheumatic diseases: A systematic review

OBJECTIVES

This paper aims to review articles that have evaluated the role of essential oil therapy in patients with rheumatic diseases.

METHODOLOGY

Systematic review. No study design or language limitation was applied.

RESULTS

We have identified 13 articles, most of them were used in osteoarthritis (n = 4), rheumatoid arthritis (n = 3) and fibromyalgia (n = 3). Two studies included patients with RA and OA (n = 2). The number of people involved in the study varied from 9 to 162, where female sex was observed in 60-100%. The age of the patients ranged from 36 to 78.3 years old and disease duration 1-11.67 years. The lavender essential oil was the most used, and then Ginger oil, Rosemary oil, and Rosmarinus officinalis. Time of oil use varied from 2 to 12 weeks. Importantly, all studies but one (91.6%) have demonstrated the efficacy of aromatherapy.

CONCLUSION

There are few reports on essential oils in rheumatic disease, mainly osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia. All but one study have showed the efficacy of this complementary therapy.

Essential Oils for Bone Repair and Regeneration-Mechanisms and Applications

Although bone possesses a remarkable capacity for self-remodeling and self-healing of small defects, the continuously increasing growth of bone diseases in the elderly population is becoming a significant burden, affecting individual life quality and society. Conventional treatment options involve surgical procedures for repair and reconstruction, local debridement, autografts or allografts, bone transport, Masquelet's two-stage reconstructions, and vascularized bone transplants. However, as such approaches often lead to disruptions of bone-regeneration processes and microbial contaminations and are often inefficient, researchers focus on developing bone-regenerative strategies and identifying novel therapeutic agents that could aid the bone-healing process. In this regard, plant-derived biocompounds, especially essential oils (EOs), have received great scientific attention in recent years, owing to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects. Current studies focus on either the direct application of EOs on bone tissue or the introduction of EOs as bioactive compounds in bone scaffolds or as coatings for bone implants. Some of the EOs investigated involve St. John's wort, rosemary, thyme, ylang, white poplar, eucalyptus, lavender, and grape seed. In this context, the present paper aims to provide an overview of the main mechanisms involved in bone repair and regeneration and the potential of EOs to address and enhance these mechanisms.

Effect of Self-Management Program on Pain and Disability Index in Elderly Men with Osteoarthritis

Background

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive disease of the joints, leading to decreased function and disability.

Objectives

The study aimed to investigate the effect of self-management (SM) program on disability index and pain in aging men with knee OA.

Methods

The study included an SM group and a control group. Given the sample size of the previous studies, 83 patients were recruited. The study tools included a demographic profile questionnaire, visual analogue scale (VAS), and HAQ 8-item DI. The intervention included 10 SM sessions for patients in the SM group (8 sessions of in-person intervention and 2 sessions of telephone intervention). Patients were placed in groups of 7, and the sessions were held weekly each for a period of 45 to 60 minutes. Data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical tests by SPSS V. 16 software.

Results

The two groups(SM and control group) were homogeneous in terms of demographic characteristics (P > 0.05). The mean (SD) disability score was 19.12 (1.92) in the SM group before the intervention, which reduced to 14.70 (1.63) after the intervention (P = 0.000, T = 10.02). The mean (SD) pain score, was 9.19 (0.71) in the SM group before the intervention, which reduced to 6.48 (0.84) after the intervention (P = 0.000, T = 18.15).

Conclusions

Training can help patients perform SM measures and improve their health status by enhancing the information needed for the disease.
