A 2,2'-bipyridyl calcium complex: synthesis, structure and reactivity studies

A 2,2'-bipyridyl calcium complex based on a tridentate ligand [CH₃C(N-2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃)CHC(CH₃)NCH₂CH₂N(CH₃)₂]Ca(bipy)(THF) (1) was prepared by the reduction of {[CH₃C(N-2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃)CHC(CH₃)NCH₂CH₂N(CH₃)₂]CaI(THF)}₂ with potassium graphite in the presence of 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy). Complex 1 is a good Ca(I)synthon, as shown by its reactivity with I₂, PhCH₂SSCH₂Ph, PhCH₂SeSeCH₂Ph and 9-fluorenone, yielding the calcium iodide complex [CH₃C(N-2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃)CHC(CH₃)NCH₂CH₂N(CH₃)₂]CaI(bipy) (2), calcium thiolate [CH₃C(N-2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃)CHC(CH₃)NCH₂CH₂N(CH₃)₂]Ca(SCH₂Ph)(bipy) (3), calcium selenolate [CH₃C(N-2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃)CHC(CH₃)NCH₂CH₂N(CH₃)₂]Ca(SeCH₂Ph)(bipy) (4), and calcium ketyl complex [CH₃C(N-2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃)CHC(CH₃)NCH₂CH₂N(CH₃)₂]Ca[O-(9-C₁₃H₈˙)](bipy)·2THF (5·2THF), respectively. In addition, reactions of complex 5 with CS₂, CH₂CHCH₂Br and PhCH₂Br give the corresponding dimeric bis(thiolate) complex {[S₂CC(CMe(NAr))C(Me)NCH₂CH₂NMe₂]Ca(DME)}₂ (6), dimeric calcium bromide complex {[(9-CH₂CHCH₂-C₁₃H₈-9)-O]CaBr(THF)(bipy)}₂ (7) and {[(9-C₆H₅CH₂-C₁₃H₈-9)-O]CaBr[O-(9-C₁₃H₈)](bipy)}₂ (8). These results demonstrated that the calcium ketyl complex 5 can also be employed as a single-electron transfer reagent. All the new compounds were characterized by various spectroscopic methods, and their solid-state structures were further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses.

Redox Activity of Noninnocent 2,2'-Bipyridine in Zinc Complexes: An Experimental and Theoretical Study

We report on a systematical reactivity study of β-diketiminate zinc complexes with redox-active 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy). The reaction of LZnI (L = HC[C(Me)N(2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃)]₂) with NaB(C₆F₅)₄ in the presence of bpy yielded [LZn(bpy)][B(C₆F₅)₄] (1), with bpy serving as a neutral ligand, whereas reduction reactions of LZnI with 1 or 2 equiv of KC₈ in the presence of bpy gave the radical complex LZn(bpy) (2) and [2.2.2-Cryptand-K][LZn(bpy)] (3), in which bpy either acts as a π-radical anion or a diamagnetic dianion, respectively. The paramagnetic nature of 2 was confirmed via solution magnetic susceptibility measurements, and UV-vis spectroscopy shows that 2 exhibits absorption bands typical for bpy radical species. The EPR spectra of 2 and its deuterated analog 2-d ₈ demonstrate that the spin density is localized to the bpy ligand. Density functional theoretical calculations and natural bond orbital analysis were employed to elucidate the electronic structure of complexes 1-3 and accurately reproduced the structural experimental data. It is shown that reduction of the bpy moiety results in a decrease in the β-diketiminate co-ligand bite angle and elongation of the Zn-N(β-diketiminate) bonds, which act cooperatively and in synergy with the bpy ligand by decreasing Zn-N(bpy) bond lengths to stabilize the energy of the LUMO.

Homoleptic tris(6,6′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine) rare earth metal complexes

Homoleptic tris(bipy) rare earth metal complexes were synthesized and structurally characterized. While two parallel bipy radical anions were strongly antiferromagnetically coupled, the remaining bipy radical anion hosted most spin densities.

Reduction of 2,2′-Bipyridine by Quasi-Linear 3d-Metal(I) Silylamides—A Structural and Spectroscopic Study

Quasi-linear anionic 3d-metal(I) silylamides are a new and promising class of molecules. Due to their highly negative reduction potential we wanted to test their capability to reduce substrates under coordination of their monoanionic radicaloid form. In a proof of principle study, we present the results of the reaction of metal(I) silylamides of chromium to cobalt with 2,2′-bipyridine (bipy), the redox non-innocence and reducibility of which was already established. In the course of these studies complexes of the type K{18-crown-6}[M(hmds)2(bipy)] (hmds = –N(SiMe3)2) were obtained. These compounds were isolated and thoroughly characterized to confirm the electron transfer onto the bipyridine ligand, which now acts as a radical monoanion. For comparison of the structural changes of the bipyridine ligand, the analogous zinc complexes were also synthesized. Overall our results indicate that anionic metal(I) silylamides are capable of reducing and ligate substrates, even when the electrochemical reduction potential of the latter is by up to 1 V higher.

Synthesis, Structure, and Properties of Al((R)bpy)3 Complexes (R = t-Bu, Me): Homoleptic Main-Group Tris-bipyridyl Compounds

The neutral homoleptic tris-bpy aluminum complexes Al((R)bpy)3, where R = tBu (1) or Me (2), have been synthesized from reactions between AlX precursors (X = Cl, Br) and neutral (R)bpy ligands through an aluminum disproportion process. The crystalline compounds have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, electrochemical experiments, EPR, magnetic susceptibility, and density functional theory (DFT) studies. The collective data show that 1 and 2 contain Al(3+) metal centers coordinated by three bipyridine (bpy(•))(1-) monoanion radicals. Electrochemical studies show that six redox states are accessible from the neutral complexes, three oxidative and three reductive, that involve oxidation or reduction of the coordinated bpy ligands to give neutral (R)bpy or (R)bpy(2-) dianions, respectively. Magnetic susceptibility measurements (4-300 K) coupled with DFT studies show strong antiferromagnetic coupling of the three unpaired electrons located on the (R)bpy ligands to give S = (1)/2 ground states with low lying S = (3)/2 excited states that are populated above 110 K (1) and 80 K (2) in the solid-state. Complex 2 shows weak 3D magnetic interactions at 19 K, which is not observed in 1 or the related [Al(bpy)3] complex.

A comprehensive study of the coordination properties of dipyridylmethane (dpma) was performed. The preparation of metal complexes of the type [(dpma)₂MCl₂]⁺, [(dpma)MCl₂]⁺, (M = Al, Ga), (dpma)InCl₃ and (dpma)(BCl₃)₂ is described along with their characterization.

Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction by M(bpy-R)(CO)4 (M = Mo, W; R = H, tBu) complexes. Electrochemical, spectroscopic, and computational studies and comparison with group 7 catalysts

Group 6 M(bpy-R)(CO)₄ (M = Mo, W; R = H, tBu) complexes have been found to be competent electrocatalysts for CO₂ reduction to CO.

Electronic structure of 2,2'-bipyridine organotransition-metal complexes. Establishing the ligand oxidation level by density functional theoretical calculations

A density functional theoretical (DFT) study (B3LYP) has been carried out on 20 organometallic complexes containing η(5)- and/or η(3)-coordinated cyclopentadienyl anions (Cp(-)) and 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) ligand(s) at varying oxidation levels, i.e., as the neutral ligand (bpy(0)), as the π-radical monoanion (bpy(•-))(-), or as the diamagnetic dianion (bpy(2-))(2-). The molecular and electronic structures of these species in their ground states and, in some cases, their first excited states have been calculated using broken-symmetry methodology. The results are compared with experimental structural and spectroscopic data (where available) in order to validate the DFT computational approach. The following electron-transfer series and complexes have been studied: [(Cp)(2)V(bpy)](0,+,2+) (1-3), [(Cp)(2)Ti(bpy)](-,0,+,2+) (4-7), [(Cp)(2)Ti(biquinoline)](0,+) (8 and 9), [(Cp*)(2)Ti(bpy)](0) (10) (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl anion), [Cp*Co(bpy)](0,+) (11 and 12), [Cp*Co(bpy)Cl](+,0) (13 and 14), [Fe(toluene)(bpy)](0) (15), [Cp*Ru(bpy)](-) (16), [(Cp)(2)Zr(bpy)](0) (17), and [Mn(CO)(3)(bpy)](-) (18). In order to test the predictive power of our computations, we have also calculated the molecular and electronic structures of two complexes, A and B, namely, the diamagnetic dimer [Cp*Sc(bpy)(μ-Cl)](2) (A) and the paramagnetic (at 25 °C) mononuclear species [(η(5)-C(5)H(4)(CH(2))(2)N(CH(3))(2))Sc((m)bpy)(2)] (B). The crystallographically observed intramolecular π-π interaction of two N,N'-coordinated π-radical anions in A leading to an S = 0 ground state is reliably reproduced. Similarly, the small singlet-triplet gap of ~600 cm(-1) between two antiferromagnetically coupled (bpy(•-))(-) ligands in B, two ferromagnetically coupled radical anions in the triplet excited state of B, and the structures of A and B is reproduced. Therefore, we are confident that we can present computationally obtained, detailed electronic structures for complexes 1-18. We show that N,N'-coordinated neutral bpy(0) ligands behave as very weak π acceptors (if at all), whereas the (bpy(2-))(2-) dianions are strong π-donor ligands.
