Abstract
Reactions of 2-benzoylpyridine, (py)(ph)CO, with InX3 (X = Cl, Br) in EtOH at room temperature have been studied. The InCl3/(py)(ph)CO system has provided access to complex [InCl3{(py)(ph)CO}(EtOH)]·{(py)(ph)CO} (1) and the byproduct {(pyH)(ph)CO}Cl (2). The reaction of InBr3 with (py)(ph)CO has led to a mixture of (L)[InBr4{(py)(ph)CO}] (3) and [In2Br4{(py)(ph)CH(O)}2(EtOH)2] (4), where L+ is the 9-oxo-indolo[1,2-a]pyridinium cation and (py)(ph)CH(O)- is the anion of (pyridin-2-yl)methanol. Based on solubility and crystallisation time differences between the two components of the mixture, complex 4 was isolated in pure form, i.e. free from 3. The formations of the counterion L+ and the coordinated (py)(ph)CH(O)- anion represent clearly InBr3-promoted/assisted transformations. Reaction mechanisms have been proposed for the formation of 2, 3 and 4. Complex 4 could also be isolated by the reaction of InBr3 and pre-formed (py)(ph)CH(OH) in EtOH. The solid-state structures of 1, 3 and 4 were determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, while the identity of the salt 2 was confirmed by microanalyses and a variety of spectroscopic techniques, including ESI-MS spectra. In the indium(III) complexes, the metal ions are 6-coordinate with a distorted octahedral geometry. The halogeno groups (Cl-, Br-) in the three complexes are terminal. The (py)(ph)CO molecule behaves as a N,O-bidentate (1.11) ligand in 1 and 3. A terminal EtOH ligand completes the coordination sphere of InIII in 1. The alkoxo oxygen atoms of the two 2.21 (py)(ph)CH(O)- ligands doubly bridge the InIII centers in 4 creating a {InIII2(μ-OR)2}4+ core; a nitrogen atom of one reduced organic ligand, two bromo ions and one terminal EtOH molecule complete the 6-coordination at each metal centre. Complexes 1, 3 and 4 were characterised by IR and Raman spectroscopies, and the data were discussed in terms of their known solid-state structures. Molar conductivity data and 1H NMR spectra were used in an attempt to probe the behaviour of the complexes in DMSO. The to-date observed metal ion-assisted/promoted transformations of (py)(ph)CO are also discussed.

Abstract
The initial use of ligands 2'-hydroxyacetophenone (HL1), 2-hydroxybenzophenone (HL2) and 2,2'-dihydroxybenzophenone (H2L3) in iron(iii) chemistry is described. The syntheses and crystal structures are reported for five iron(iii) clusters: [Fe10O4(OMe)14(L1)6(MeOH)2](NO3)2·3MeOH (1·3MeOH), [Fe12O4(OH)(OMe)17(L1)8](ClO4)2·2H2O (2·2H2O), [Fe10O4(OMe)14Cl4(L2)4(MeOH)2] (3), [Fe10O4(OMe)14(L2)6(py)2](ClO4)2·MeOH (4·MeOH), where py = pyridine, and [Fe6O2(OEt)6(O2CMe)2(L3)2(HL3)2] (5). The molecular structures of the decanuclear clusters 1, 3 and 4 are organized around a {Fe10(μ4-O)4(μ3-OMe)2(μ-OMe)12}8+ core consisting of ten {Fe3O4} face-sharing defective cubane units. The core of 2 consists of a {Fe12(μ4-O)4(μ3-OMe)4(μ-OH)(μ-OMe)13}10+ unit composed of twelve {Fe3O4} face-sharing defective cubanes. The ligands (L1)- and (L2)- in 1-4 adopt the O,O'-bidentate chelating coordination mode and their roles are to terminate the further aggregation of the FeIII/O2-/RO- cores. Complex 5 contains the {Fe6(μ4-O)2(μ-OEt)6(μ-Ocarbonyl)2}4+ core, where the μ-Ocarbonyl atoms are the bridging carbonyl oxygens of the two η1:η2:η1:μ (L3)2- ligands; the (HL3)- groups behave as Ophenolate, Ocarbonyl-bidentate chelating ligands with the neutral hydroxyl group being unbound to the FeIII atoms. The core is composed of four {Fe3O4} face-sharing defective cubanes. The FeIII atoms in 1-5 are all six-coordinate with distorted octahedral geometries. The IR spectra of the complexes are discussed in terms of the known coordination modes of the ligands and the ionic character of nitrates and perchlorates. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility and variable-field magnetization measurements establish that 2, 3 and 5 have S = 3, 0 and 5 ground states, respectively. The susceptibility data for 5 were fitted using a 3-J model indicating the simultaneous presence of both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic FeIIIFeIII exchange interactions. Known magnetostructural correlations in oxido-bridged iron(iii) systems have been applied to rationalise the magnetic behaviour of the three clusters. The results of the present study demonstrate the utility of HL1, HL2 and H2L3 in the stabilisation of robust iron(iii)/oxido/alkoxido clusters.

Abstract
Reaction of [ReOCl3(PPh3)2] with 3,5-di-tert-butyl-1,2-benzoquinone (3,5-DTBQ) in hot toluene produces a new complex [(3,5-di-tert-Bu2C6H2O2)Re(OPPh3)Cl3] (1), which was isolated and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-vis spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. In order to clarify the charge state of rhenium and the coordinated dioxolene ligand, X-ray experiments at 150 and 290 K were carried out. The C-O, C-C, and Re-O bond distances at both 150 and 290 K fall between those for semiquinolate (3,5-DTBSQ) and catecholate (3,5-DTBCat) forms; an empirical "metrical oxidation state" of the dioxolene ligand was estimated to be -1.5. High-level ab initio calculations (SOC-CASSCF/NEVPT2) revealed a mixed valence nature of the triplet ground state of complex 1 corresponding to a superposition of the Re(IV)-SQ and Re(V)-cat forms. In agreement with the high-level ab initio and DFT calculations, the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility (5-300 K) is well described in the assumption of the triplet ground state, with the anomalously large zero-field splitting (ZFS) arising from the spin-orbit coupling. According to the ab initio calculations, all absorption bands in the visible region of the electronic absorptions spectrum are assigned to the LMCT bands, with significant contribution of the intraligand transition in the most intense band at 555 nm.
