Characteristics and Models of Moisture Uptake in Fiber-Reinforced Composites: A Topical Review

Fiber-reinforced composites are commonly exposed to environments associated with moisture and solution, resulting in uptake, which causes changes in the bulk resin, the fiber-matrix interface, and even the fiber itself. Knowledge about uptake behavior and diffusion mechanisms and characteristics are critical to better understanding the response of these materials to environmental exposure faced through service to developing better materials through selection of constituents and to the prediction of long-term durability. This paper reviews aspects of uptake mechanisms and subsequent response, as well as models that describe the sorption process, with the aim of providing a comprehensive understanding of moisture-uptake-related phenomena and characteristics such as uptake rate, diffusion and relaxation/deterioration constants, transitions in regimes, and overall response.

Modelling of Environmental Ageing of Polymers and Polymer Composites-Modular and Multiscale Methods

Service lifetimes of polymers and polymer composites are impacted by environmental ageing. The validation of new composites and their environmental durability involves costly testing programs, thus calling for more affordable and safe alternatives, and modelling is seen as such an alternative. The state-of-the-art models are systematized in this work. The review offers a comprehensive overview of the modular and multiscale modelling approaches. These approaches provide means to predict the environmental ageing and degradation of polymers and polymer composites. Furthermore, the systematization of methods and models presented herein leads to a deeper and reliable understanding of the physical and chemical principles of environmental ageing. As a result, it provides better confidence in the modelling methods for predicting the environmental durability of polymeric materials and fibre-reinforced composites.

Resistive Response of Carbon Nanotube-Based Composites Subjected to Water Aging

This work aimed to monitor, through the changes in electrical resistance, the evolution of the mechanical properties due to aging caused by water sorption in carbon nanotube-based epoxy composites. The epoxy/CNT nanocomposites were prepared by dispersing the filler in the precursor through the ultra-sonication process and mixing the hardener by mechanical stirring. After an evaluation of the electrical properties, detected through a two-probe electrical measurement method, of nanocomposites at different percentages by weight of the filler (0.025, 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 1.0), a concentration (0.1% by weight), close to that of the electrical percolation threshold, was chosen to evaluate the resistive response. This specific concentration was selected in order to obtain maximized values of the variation detected for the changes in the electrical resistance resulting from phenomena of structural relaxations/rearrangements due to water absorption. In particular, the electrical conductivity value switched from 8.2 × 10^-14 S/m for the unfilled epoxy resin to 6.3 × 10^-2 S/m for carbon nanotube-based epoxy composite at 0.1% by weight of the nanofiller. The water sorption caused a reduction in the mechanical properties (storage modulus and tan δ) due to swelling and plasticization phenomena, which caused the structural reorganization of the conductive interparticle contacts in the matrix with a consequent variation in the electrical resistance of the material. The found 'non-Fickian' water diffusion behavior was very similar to the variation in the electrical resistance with time. This last correlation allows the association of the measurement of the electrical resistance with the quantity of absorbed water and, therefore, with the aging of the material to water absorption, through the sensitivity factor (β). The resistive nature of the composite can be used to monitor the amount of water absorption and the changes in the structure of the material subject to water aging.

Moisture Absorption Behavior and Adhesion Properties of GNP/Epoxy Nanocomposite Adhesives

In the current work, an attempt has been made to investigate the effect of Graphene Nanoplatelets (GNP) reinforcement to water absorption behavior and mechanical properties of adhesive bonding with epoxy. Epoxy adhesive with various GNP content (i.e., 0.0~2.0 wt%) was utilized to joint aluminum adherend subjected to various immersion periods (i.e., 0~60 days). Subsequently, the effect of GNP reinforcement on water uptake, water absorption rate and tensile shear strength was investigated. Depending on GNP content, two distinct behaviors in water uptake and moisture absorption rate have been observed; specimens with lower GNP content (0.5~1.0 wt%) have demonstrated increased/retention of water uptake and water absorption rate regardless of immersion period. Meanwhile, at higher GNP content (1.5~2.0 wt%), decreased water uptake and water absorption rate are generally observed. At similar GNP content, regardless of immersion periods, water immersed specimens generally demonstrate higher or retention of shear strength when compared to specimens at 0-day immersion period. These observations suggest that the relation between moisture absorption behavior and mechanical properties of GNP-reinforced adhesive with GNP content are rather complex which might be attributed to the interplay of several possible mechanisms.

Moisture Absorption of Carbon/Epoxy Nanocomposites

Moisture absorption of composites with nanoscale carbon additives such as carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, graphite nanoplatelets, and carbon black is investigated using thermogravimetric data and a non-Fickian hindered diffusion (Langmuir-type) model. The moisture absorption parameters are determined using this model for six different types of carbon/epoxy nanocomposites. The absorption behaviors obtained at different humidity levels and thermal environments are recovered by minimizing the error between the experimental data and model predictions, thus enabling the accurate determination of the moisture equilibrium level. The absorption behavior and the weight gain of all nanocomposites are shown to be accurately represented by this model over the entire absorption period. The presence of carbon nanomaterials is found to induce varying levels of non-Fickian behavior, governed by the nondimensional hindrance coefficient. This behavior is enhanced with the nanomaterial content and separate from the slight non-Fickian behavior of all neat epoxy samples. The molecular bonding during diffusion, as well as the interfacial moisture storage, could be among the reasons for non-Fickian behavior and should be included in the absorption models for accurate characterization of carbon/epoxy nanocomposites.
