Percolation networks and transient rheology of polylactide composites containing graphite nanosheets with various thicknesses

Elastic Electrically Conductive Composites Based on Vapor-Grown Carbon Fibers for Use in Sensors

Elastic electrically conductive composites with an ethylene octene copolymer matrix (EOC) and vapor-grown carbon fibers (VGCF) were prepared by ultrasonication in a toluene solution, and their morphology, mechanical and electrical properties were also evaluated. EOC/CF composites were estimated for their mechanical and viscoelastic properties. The morphology of the composites was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and stress-strain curves were generated to measure the stress and tensile modulus of the composites. The experimental results were compared with various theoretical models, including the Burgers model, which separates viscoelastic behavior into several components. A dynamic mechanical analysis was also used to measure the composites' storage modulus, loss modulus, and damping factor at different frequencies. The composites' complex viscosity and storage modulus were increased with higher wt.% of CF, which enhances the elastic response. Electrical resistivity measurements were conducted on the composites and it was found that the resistivity decreased as the sample was loaded and increased as it was unloaded. Overall, the study provides insights into the mechanical and viscoelastic properties of EOC/CF composites, which could be helpful in developing sensors such as pressure/strain sensors.

Hierarchical Polyaniline Core-Shell Nanocomposites Coated on Modified Graphite for Improved Electrical Conductivity Performance

Graphite has recently gained scientific and industrial attention due to its high electrical conductivity. In the current endeavor, a new way to fabricate novel and multifunctional nanocomposites using functional graphite (FG) as filler is presented. The fabrication of multilayered conducting composites of PANi/PMMA/PPG-b-PEG-b-PPG was carried out via in situ polymerization, using polyaniline (PANi), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and block copolymer as matrices in the presence of FGfiller. The growth of PANi chains is manifested by PMMA due to the formation of H-bonding between imine and carbonyl groups of PANi and MMA units, respectively, and are responsible for ion exchange sites. FTIR spectroscopy was used for structural elucidation of composites while elemental analysis was accomplished by XPS and EDX spectroscopy. The morphology of the prepared PANi/PMMA/PPG-b-PEG-b-PPG@FG composites was inspected by the SEM. The structure and crystallinity of the composites was investigated via XRD. The improved thermal stability and properties of the nanocomposites were observed using TGA and DSC. The conductivity measurements were used to characterize the electrical conductivity performance of the resulting composites. The presence of functional filler as well as polyaniline shows a significant contribution towards the enhancement of electrical conductivity of PANi/PMMA/PPG-b-PEG-b-PPG@FG nanocomposites.

Exploring the Size Effect of Graphene Oxide on Crystallization Kinetics and Barrier Properties of Poly(lactic acid)

Two different sizes of graphene oxide/poly(lactic acid) composites were prepared by the solution flocculation method, and the effect of the size effect of graphene oxide on the crystallization, barrier, and mechanical properties of poly(lactic acid) was investigated by various characterization methods. The results of the crystallization behavior test show that the size change of graphene oxide has little effect on the nucleation effect of poly(lactic acid). Increasing the size of graphene oxide can promote the crystal growth, so as to improve the crystallization ability of poly(lactic acid). The test results of mechanical properties and barrier properties show that increasing the size of graphene oxide can provide a larger interfacial surface area and transmit stress more effectively, which can greatly improve the modulus of poly(lactic acid). At the same time, because of this, the diffusion path of gas molecules in poly(lactic acid) can be longer and more tortuous, so as to improve the barrier performance of poly(lactic acid).

Icephobic/anti-icing properties of superhydrophobic surfaces

In the winter, icing on solid surfaces is a typical occurrence that may create a slew of hassles and even tragedies. Anti-icing surfaces are one of the effective solutions for this kind of problem. The roughness of a superhydrophobic surface traps air and weakens the contact between the solid surface and liquid water, allowing water droplets to be removed before freezing. At present, the conventional anti-icing methods including mechanical or thermal technology are not only surface structure unfriendly but also have the obsessions of low efficiency, high energy consumption and high manufacturing costs. Hence, developing a way to remove ice by just modifying the surface shape or chemical composition with a low surface energy is extremely desirable. Numerous attempts have been made to investigate the evolution of ice nucleation and icing on superhydrophobic surfaces under the direction of the ice nucleation hypothesis. In this paper, the research progress of ice nucleation in recent years is reviewed from theoretical and application. The icephobic surfaces are described using the wettability and classical nucleation theories. The benefits and drawbacks of anti-icing superhydrophobic surface are summarized, as well as deicing methods. Finally, several applications of ice phobic materials are illustrated, and some problems and challenges in the research field are discussed. We believed that this review will be useful in guiding future water freezing initiatives.

Probing the Dynamic Structural Evolution of End-Functionalized Polybutadiene/Organo-Clay Nanocomposite Gels before and after Yielding by Nonlinear Rheology and 1H Double-Quantum NMR

Understanding the structural evolution process after the yielding of networks in polymer nanocomposites can provide significant insights into the design and fabrication of high-performance nanocomposites. In this work, using hydroxyl-terminated 1,4-polybutadiene (HTPB)/organo-clay nanocomposite gel as a model, we explored the yielding and recovery process of a polymer network. Linear rheology results revealed the formation of a nanocomposite gel with a house-of-cards structure due to the fully exfoliated 6 to 8 wt% organo-clays. Within this range, nonlinear rheologic experiments were introduced to yield the gel network, and the corresponding recovery processes were monitored. It was found that the main driving force of network reconstruction was the polymer–clay interaction, and the rotation of clay sheets played an important role in arousing stress overshoots. By proton double-quantum (1H DQ) NMR spectroscopy, residual dipolar coupling and its distribution contributed by HTPB segments anchored on clay sheets were extracted to unveil the physical network information. During the yielding process of a house-of-cards network, e.g., 8 wt% organo-clay, nearly one-fourth of physical cross-linking was broken. Based on the rheology and 1H DQ NMR results, a tentative model was proposed to illustrate the yielding and recovery of the network in HTPB/organo-clay nanocomposite gel.

Water-in-water Pickering emulsions stabilized by the starch nanocrystals with various surface modifications

HYPOTHESIS

Using the platelet-like starch nanocrystals (SNCs) to stabilize emulsions is attractive because as-prepared emulsions have promising applications in cosmetics and food fields. Limited studies mainly focus on the oil-in-water system, and another important system, the water-in-water emulsions stabilized by SNCs, has not yet been unveiled.

EXPERIMENTS

Two surface modification strategies, crosslinking and acetylation, were applied to tune surface property and aggregation of SNCs, and a common all-aqueous system (dextran/poly(ethylene glycol)) was used here as template. The viscoelasticity and morphology of emulsions were studied in terms of the SNC loadings and polymer ratios.

FINDINGS

Crosslinking results in aggregation of SNCs, and the particle size increases (from 110 nm to 370 nm) with increased levels of substitution. This favors improving emulsifying ability of particles. Acetylation decreases the particle size (∼90 nm) and weakens the affinity of SNCs to the two aqueous phases, improving the emulsifying efficiency of SNCs. More intriguingly, the two emulsion systems show different phase inversion behaviors. The depletion-stabilization mechanism for the cross-linked SNCs and the diffusion-controlled mechanism for the acetylated SNCs are proposed using the emulsion viscoelasticity as probe. This study makes a comprehensive insight into the regulation of water-in-water emulsion morphology and types with the platelet-like SNCs.

Cellulosic nanofibers filled poly(β-hydroxybutyrate): Relations between viscoelasticity of composites and aspect ratios of nanofibers

Dispersion states are vital for fibrous nanocelluloses to be used as reinforcements for polymers, which is highly dependent on geometry of nanocelluloses. Three types of nanocelluloses with various fiber aspect ratios were used to prepare target composite samples with poly(β-hydroxybutyrate) in this work. Viscoelasticity/elastoplasticity were used as probes to detect the flexibility-morphology relations of nanocelluloses in polymer. Cellulose nanocrystals (aspect ratio = 8) were rigid in polymer, retaining their rod-like shape, whereas bacterial celluloses (aspect ratio = 600) fully flexible, forming closely networked structure, and cellulose nanofibers (aspect ratio = 70) semi-flexible, dispersing as loosely flocculated clusters. Owing to these differences, the viscoelastic flow and elastoplastic deformation of three kinds of composites differed from one another. The strain-scaling and hysteresis work-scaling behaviors were then used to establish relaxation scale-structure correlations of target samples. This work provides interesting information around regulating the dispersion of nanocelluloses in polymer composites by tailoring aspect ratios of nanocelluloses.

Surface chain engineering of chitin nanocrystals towards tailoring the nucleating capacities for poly(β-hydroxybutyrate)

Chitin nanocrystal (ChNC) is good nucleation agent for aliphatic polyesters because of its high-energy surface. To moderate its nucleation activity, silane coupling agents with different chain lengths or functional groups were used to modify ChNCs in this work, and biodegradable poly(β-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) was used as target polymer for crystallization study. Surface coupling of ChNCs improves their phase adhesion to PHB chain and weakens their nucleation activities. The alterations strongly depend on the surface chain structure of ChNCs: sulfhydryl silane-coupled ChNC shows lowered nucleation activity, whereas amino silane-coupled ChNCs even become antinucleation agents. The interfacial compatibility is vital to altered role of ChNCs and to following changes in spherulite growth and ring-banded morphology, which is further disclosed using Flory-Huggins interaction parameters and rheological responses as probes. This work provides useful information on tailoring the functions of ChNCs as nanoadditive for biodegradable aliphatic polyesters by the way of surface chain engineering.

Starch nanocrystals as the particle emulsifier to stabilize caprylic/capric triglycerides-in-water emulsions

Starch nanocrystals (SNCs) grafted with octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) were used to stabilize caprylic/capric triglycerides (GTCC)-in-water emulsions. The morphology and viscoelasticity of emulsions were studied in terms of particle loadings and degrees of substitution (DSs). It is found that the emulsifying capacities of SNCs increase with increased DSs. Both the pristine SNC and modified ones can be well used to stabilize emulsions, whereas the emulsification follows different mechanisms. The platelet-like structure of SNCs, together with its improved amphiphilicity after surface treatments, are important to the formation and evolution of droplet clusters. The deformation and relaxation of those clusters result in weak flow overshoots and strong thixotropy in different shear flow fields, which favor storage and applications of GTCC-in-water emulsions as hydrocolloids. The mechanisms were then discussed in terms of rigidity of SNC and relaxations of clusters. This work proposes a promising application of SNC in food and cosmetic industries.

Graphite Nanoplatelets from Waste Chicken Feathers

Graphite nanoplatelets (GNPs), a functional 2D nanofiller for polymer nanocomposites, utilize natural graphite as a raw material due to its stacked graphene layers and outstanding material properties upon successful exfoliation into nano-thick sheets. However, the increasing demand for natural graphite in many industrial applications necessitates the use of graphite from waste resources. We synthesized GNPs from waste chicken feathers (WCFs) by graphitizing carbonized chicken feathers and exfoliating the graphitic carbon by high-speed homogenization and sonication. We then separated GNP from non-exfoliated carbon by centrifugation. This paper describes the morphology, chemical, and crystalline properties of WCF and its carbon derivatives, as well as the structural features of WCF-derived carbons. We obtained GNPs that have a 2D structure with huge variations in particle size and thickness. The GNP shows the presence of carbonyl groups, which are mostly attached at the edges of the stacked graphene sheets. Defects in the GNP are higher than in graphene synthesized from direct exfoliation of natural graphite but lower than in graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide. To produce GNP of high quality from WCF, restacking of graphene sheets and concentration of carbonyls must be minimized.

Cellulose nanofibers reinforced biodegradable polyester blends: Ternary biocomposites with balanced mechanical properties

Blending two biodegradable aliphatic polyesters with complementary bulk properties is an easy way of tuning their final properties. In this work, the ductile poly(butylene succinate) was mixed with polylactide, and as expectable, the blends show improved toughness with sharply reduced strengths. The pristine cellulose nanofibers were then used as the reinforcement for the blends. It is found that most nanofibers are dispersed in the polylactide phase because polylactide has better affinity to nanofibers, and the lower viscosity level of polylactide also favors driving nanofibers into the continuous polylactide phase during melting mixing. In this case, the strength and rigidity losses resulted from the presence of soft poly(butylene succinate) phase are compensated to some extent. To further improve mechanical properties, a two-step approach (reactive processing of blends, followed by the incorporation with nanofibers) was developed. This work provides an interesting way of fabricating fully biodegradable composites with well-balanced mechanical performance.

Fluorine-free Superhydrophobic and Conductive Rubber Composite with Outstanding Deicing Performance for Highly Sensitive and Stretchable Strain Sensors

Conductive polymer composite (CPC) based strain sensor due to its lightweight, tunable electrical conductivity, and easy processing has promising application in wearable electronics. However, it is still challenging to develop the CPC strain sensors with excellent stretchability, sensitivity, durability, anticorrosion, and deicing performance. Herein, a facile method is proposed to prepare fluorine-free superhydrophobic and highly conductive rubber composite. Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) are first decorated on the RB (rubber band) surface, forming a conductive shell. Then, the RB/AgNPs experiences PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) modification, which could not only endow the composite with superhydrophobicity and hence excellent corrosion resistance but also improve the interfacial adhesion between the AgNPs. The RB composite possesses a good self-cleaning performance and remains superhydrophobic even after experiencing cyclic abrasion or stretching-releasing test. Also, the high conductivity and superhydrophobicity endow the RB composite with excellent Joule heating performance and water repellence, broadening its application in deicing and water removal. Moreover, the obtained RB composite exhibits both large stretchability with a break elongation larger than 900% and high sensitivity with a response intensity as high as 3.6 × 10⁸ at a strain of 60%. In addition, the RB composite strain sensor can be used to detect full-range human motions including large and subtle body movement. The flexible, durable, and anticorrosive RB composite has potential applications in flexible electronic, health monitoring, physical therapy, and so on.

Recycling of spodumene slag: preparation of green polymer composites

The recycling of spodumene slag is studied in this work, with the objective of exploring the possibility of using spodumene slag as a common polymer filler.
