PolyHIPEs: Recent advances in emulsion-templated porous polymers

Improvement of processable properties of plant-based high internal phase emulsions by mung bean protein isolate based on pH shift treatment

BACKGROUND

High internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) are unique emulsion systems that transform liquid oil into solid-like fats, thus avoiding the use of saturated fat and leading to a healthier and more sustainable food system for consumers. HIPEs with oil volume fraction (ϕ) of 75-85% were fabricated with mung bean protein isolate (MPI) under different pH shift treatments at 1.0% concentration through the one-step method. In the present study, we investigated the physical properties, microstructures, processing properties, storage stability and rheological properties of HIPEs.

RESULTS

The results suggested that the properties of MPI under different pH shift treatments were improved to different degrees, stabilizing HIPEs (ϕ = 75-85%) with various processability to meet food processing needs. Under alkali shift treatment conditions, the particle size of MPI was significantly reduced with better solubility. Moreover, the exposure of hydrophobic groups increased the surface hydrophobicity of MPI, awarding MPI better emulsifying properties, which could stabilize the HIPEs with higher oil phase fraction. In addition, the MPI under pH 12 shift treatment (MPI-12) had the best oil-carrying ability to form the stable HIPEs with oil volume fraction (ϕ) up to 85%, which was the highest oil phase in preparing the HIPEs using plant protein solely at a low concentration under neutral conditions.

CONCLUSION

A series of stable HIPEs with different processing properties was simply and feasibly fabricated and these are of great potential in applying edible HIPEs. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Mechanism of Interconnected Pore Formation in High Internal Phase Emulsion-Templated Polymer

High internal phase emulsion-templated polymer, named polyHIPE, has received widespread attention due to its great potential applications in many fields, such as separation, adsorption, heterogeneous catalysis, and sound absorption. The broad applicability is largely dependent on its adjustable opening structure. However, the question of why polyHIPE has an interconnected pore network structure is still to be discussed. Herein, different types (w/o, o/w, and o/o) of HIPEs are prepared and subsequently detected with laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM), and the polyHIPEs obtained by curing the HIPEs are characterized by SEM. The observations suggest that the interconnected pore formation is primarily due to the presence of the surfactant-rich phase in the film between the neighboring droplets in HIPE. The interconnected pores are generated by removal of the surfactant-rich domains in the postcuring procedure, and their sizes would be enlarged if the solubility of the surfactant in the continuous phase decreases in the curing stage.

Emulsion-Templated Gelatin/Amino Acids/Chitosan Macroporous Hydrogels with Adjustable Internal Dimensions for Three-Dimensional Stem Cell Culture

The demand for macroporous hydrogel scaffolds with interconnected porous and open-pore structures is crucial for advancing research and development in cell culture and tissue regeneration. Existing techniques for creating 3D porous materials and controlling their porosity are currently constrained. This study introduces a novel approach for producing highly interconnected aspartic acid-gelatin macroporous hydrogels (MHs) with precisely defined open pore structures using a one-step emulsification polymerization method with surface-modified silica nanoparticles as Pickering stabilizers. Macroporous hydrogels offer adjustable pore size and pore throat size within the ranges of 50 to 130 μm and 15 to 27 μm, respectively, achieved through variations in oil-in-water ratio and solid content. The pore wall thickness of the macroporous hydrogel can be as thin as 3.37 μm and as thick as 6.7 μm. In addition, the storage modulus of the macroporous hydrogels can be as high as 7250 Pa, and it maintains an intact rate of more than 92% after being soaked in PBS for 60 days, which is also good performance for use as a biomedical scaffold material. These hydrogels supported the proliferation of human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) over a 30 day incubation period, stretching the cell morphology and demonstrating excellent biocompatibility and cell adhesion. The combination of these desirable attributes makes them highly promising for applications in stem cell culture and tissue regeneration, underscoring their potential significance in advancing these fields.

Tuning the water intrinsic permeability of PEGDA hydrogel membranes by adding free PEG chains of varying molar masses

We explore the effect of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) molar mass on the intrinsic permeability and structural characteristics of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate PEGDA/PEG composite hydrogel membranes. We observe that by varying the PEG content and molar mass, we can finely adjust the water intrinsic permeability by several orders of magnitude. Notably, we show the existence of maximum water intrinsic permeability, already identified in a previous study to be located at the critical overlap concentration C* of PEG chains, for the highest PEG molar mass studied. Furthermore, we note that the maximum intrinsic permeability follows a non-monotonic evolution with respect to the PEG molar mass and reaches its peak at 35 000 g mol-1. Besides, our results show that a significant fraction of PEG chains is irreversibly trapped within the PEGDA matrix even for the lowest molar masses down to 600 g mol-1. This observation suggests the possibility of covalent grafting of the PEG chains onto the PEGDA matrix. CryoSEM and AFM measurements demonstrate the presence of large micron-sized cavities separated by PEGDA-rich walls whose nanometric structures strongly depend on the PEG content. By combining our permeability and structural measurements, we suggest that the PEG chains trapped inside the PEGDA-rich walls induce nanoscale defects in the crosslinking density, resulting in increased permeability below C*. Conversely, above C*, we speculate that partially trapped PEG chains may form a brush-like arrangement on the surface of the PEGDA-rich walls, leading to a reduction in permeability. These two opposing effects are anticipated to exhibit molar-mass-dependent trends, contributing to the non-monotonic variation of the maximum intrinsic permeability at C*. Overall, our results demonstrate the potential to fine-tune the properties of hydrogel membranes, offering new opportunities for separation applications.

Construction of Hierarchical Porous UiO-66-Br2@PS/DVB-Packed Columns by High Internal Phase Emulsion Strategy for Enhanced Separation of CF4/N2 and SF6/N2

Recovery and separation of anthropogenic emissions of electronic specialty gases (F-gases, such as CF4 and SF6) from the semiconductor sector are of critical importance. In this work, the hierarchical porous UiO-66-Br2@PS/DVB-packed column was constructed by a high internal phase emulsions strategy. UiO-66-Br2@PS/DVB exhibits a superior selectivity of CF4/N2 (2.67) and SF6/N2 (3.34) predicted by the IAST due to the diffusion limitation in the micropore and the gas-framework affinity. Especially, UiO-66-Br2@PS/DVB showed significant CF4 and SF6 retention and enabled the successful separation of CF4/N2 and SF6/N2 with a resolution of 2.37 and 8.89, respectively, when used as a packed column in gas chromatography. Compared with the Porapak Q column, the HETP of the UiO-66-Br2@PS/DVB-packed column decreased and showed good reproducibility. This research not only offers a convenient method for fabricating a hierarchical porous MOF-packed column but also showcases the prospective utilization of MOFs for the separation of the F-gas/N2 mixture.

New Approach for Preparation of Porous Polymers with Reversible Pore Structures for a Highly Safe Smart Supercapacitor

Porous polymers have many industrial applications, but their pore structures (open or closed) are usually fixed during polymerization. In this study, polymers with reversible and controllable pore structures, namely, thermosensitive porous hydrogels with regulated volume phase transition temperature, were prepared using a Pickering high-internal-phase emulsion as the template. Upon heating, the hydrogels transformed not only in their wettability (between hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity with water contact angles of 21.8 and 100.9°) but also their pore structure (between open through-holes and closed holes with pore throat sizes of 15.58 and 0 μm, respectively) in a short time (<10 s). When the hydrogel was used as a separator in smart supercapacitors (SCs), this behavior effectively limited the path of electrolyte migration, reducing the chance of conflagration accidents. Moreover, by utilizing the highly reversible pore structures and wettability of the porous hydrogel, reversible charging and discharging were restored after the system cooled down. This work not only provides great guidance for preparing porous polymers with reversible pore structures but also paves the way for designing smart SCs with enhanced safety.

High Internal Phase Emulsion for Constructing Chiral Helical Polymer-Based Circularly Polarized Luminescent Porous Materials

Polymerized high internal phase emulsions (polyHIPEs) with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), as an interesting class of porous materials, are of great significance for the development of CPL porous materials but have not been reported so far. Herein, we report the construction of polyHIPE-based CPL porous materials, taking advantage of an adsorption strategy. The pristine polyHIPEs constructed by chiral helical polymers, which acted as a chiral microenvironment, were fabricated by coordination polymerization of chiral acetylene monomers (R/S-SA) using HIPEs as templates. Achiral fluorescent small molecules were dispersed in the pores of the 3D porous organic chiral polymer matrix provided by polyHIPEs through the adsorption strategy, and CPL-active porous materials with blue, cyan, and green emissions were constructed using a fluorescence-selective absorption mechanism that does not rely on chirality transfer at the molecular level. The maximum luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum) value was -2.6 × 10-2. This work establishes a new and simple way for developing CPL porous materials.

Highly Macroporous Polyimide with Chemical Versatility Prepared from Poly(amic acid) Salt-Stabilized High Internal Phase Emulsion Template

Macroporous polymers have gained significant attention due to their unique mass transport and size-selective properties. In this study, we focused on Polyimide (PI), a high-performance polymer, as an ideal candidate for macroporous structures. Despite various attempts to create macroporous PI (Macro PI) using emulsion templates, challenges remained, including limited chemical diversity and poor control over pore size and porosity. To address these issues, we systematically investigated the role of poly(amic acid) salt (PAAS) polymers as macrosurfactants and matrices. By designing 12 different PAAS polymers with diverse chemical structures, we achieved stable high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) with >80 vol % internal volume. The resulting Macro PIs exhibited exceptional porosity (>99 vol %) after thermal imidization. We explored the structure-property relationships of these Macro PIs, emphasizing the importance of controlling pore size distribution. Furthermore, our study demonstrated the utility of these Macro PIs as separators in Li-metal batteries, providing stable charging-discharging cycles. Our findings not only enhance the understanding of emulsion-based macroporous polymers but also pave the way for their applications in advanced energy storage systems and beyond.

Optimization of a High Internal Phase Emulsion-Based Resin for Use in Commercial Vat Photopolymerization Additive Manufacturing

High internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) are potential stereolithography-based resins for producing innovative lightweight porous materials; however, the use of these resins has only been shown in bespoke stereolithography setups. These studies indicated that HIPEs tend to scatter the light during structuring through stereolithography, and can produce poorly defined and low-resolution structures, but the inclusion of light absorbers can drastically increase the printing resolution. In this study, we focused on the inclusion of biocompatible light absorbers within the resin and the compatibility of those resins with a commercial vat photopolymerization additive manufacturing (or stereolithography) setup. A surfactant (hypermer)-stabilized water-in-oil emulsion based on 2-ethylhexyl-acrylate and isobornyl-acrylate was used. For the light absorbers, both hydrophobic (beta-carotene) and hydrophilic (tartrazine) molecules were used, which dissolve in the organic phase and aqueous phase, respectively. It was found that using a combination of both beta-carotene and tartrazine provided the best stereolithography-based 3D printing resolution. In addition, the emulsion was stable for the duration of the printing process and showed a porous polyHIPE structure with open surface porosity. The formulation of these HIPE-based resins permits them to be used in a wide range of applications since complex structures could be fabricated from HIPEs.

Aminopoly(carboxylic acid)-Functionalized PolyHIPE Beads toward Eliminating Trace Heavy Metal Ions from Water

Many advanced materials are designed for the removal of heavy metal ions from water. However, materials for eliminating trace heavy metal ions from wastewater to meet drinking water standards remain a major challenge. Herein, epoxy group-functionalized open-cellular beads are synthesized by UV polymerization of a water-in-oil-in-water system. The epoxy groups are further transformed into diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) with hexamethylene diamine as a bridging agent. The resulting material (DTPA@polyHIPE beads) can eliminate trace Cu(II), Cr(III), Pb(II), Fe(III), or Cd(II) from water. When 0.15 g of DTPA@polyHIPE beads are used to adsorb metal ions of 20 mg in 100 mL of water, the residue concentrations of Cu(II), Cr(III), Pb(II), Fe(III), and Cd(II) are reduced to 0.08, 0.06, 0.02, 0.09, and 0.07 mg/L, respectively. The adsorption efficiencies of the beads for these ions are all higher than 99.55%. The adsorbent is durable and exhibits good recyclability by retaining an adsorption capacity of ≥91% after 5 cycles. The negative values of ΔG in the adsorption process indicate that the adsorption is feasible and spontaneous. The chemical adsorption follows the Freundlich adsorption model, indicating a multilayer heterogeneous adsorption. The DTPA@polyHIPE beads have a great potential application in dealing with trace heavy metal ion polluted water.

A smart thermoresponsive macroporous 4D structure by 4D printing of Pickering-high internal phase emulsions stabilized by plasma-functionalized starch nanomaterials for a possible delivery system

Hierarchically porous structures combine microporosity, mesoporosity, and microporosity to enhance pore accessibility and transport, which are crucial to develop high performance materials for biofabrication, food, and pharmaceutical applications. This work aimed to develop a 4D-printed smart hierarchical macroporous structure through 3D printing of Pickering-type high internal phase emulsions (Pickering-HIPEs). The key was the utilization of surface-active (hydroxybutylated) starch nanomaterials, including starch nanocrystals (SNCs) (from waxy maize starch through acid hydrolysis) or starch nanoparticles (SNPs) (obtained through an ultrasound treatment). An innovative procedure to fabricate the functionalized starch nanomaterials was accomplished by grafting 1,2-butene oxide using a cold plasma technique to enhance their surface hydrophobicity, improving their aggregation, and thus attaining a colloidally stabilized Pickering-HIPEs with a low concentration of each surface-active starch nanomaterial. A flocculation of droplets in Pickering-HIPEs was developed after the addition of modified SNCs or SNPs, leading to the formation of a gel-like structure. The 3D printing of these Pickering-HIPEs developed a highly interconnected large pore structure, possessing a self-assembly property with thermoresponsive behavior. As a potential drug delivery system, this thermoresponsive macroporous 3D structure offered a lower critical solution temperature (LCST)-type phase transition at body temperature, which can be used in the field of smart releasing of bioactive compounds.

Covalent organic frameworks based hierarchical porous hybrid monolithic capillary: Synthesis, characterization, and applications in trace metals analysis

The preparation of hierarchical porous monolithic column with high covalent organic frameworks (COF) loading and micropores accessibility is challenging due to the easy aggregability and sedimentation of COFs. Herein, a novel strategy based on high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) polymerization was proposed for preparing COF hybrid capillary monolithic column with hierarchical porosity. COFs with different frameworks including imine COFs (COF-OMe, COF-F and COF-SH), triazine COF (CTF-1) and boron-based COF (COF-5) were selected to investigate the universality of the preparation strategy. The presence of COF in the monolithic capillary was confirmed by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Nitrogen adsorption/desorption experiments and thermogravimetric analysis showed that the prepared COF hybrid monolithic capillary exhibited high COF loading (e.g., 28.7% for COF-SH) and accessibility (e.g., 98.5% for COF-SH), mainly due to the thin walls of void-window structures originated from polymerization of HIPE. The successful preparation of water-stable COF-F, COF-OMe, COF-SH and CTF-1 hybrid monolithic columns demonstrated the proposed synthesis strategy is universal to water-stable COF without tedious optimization of dispersion system, effectively avoiding the sedimentation of COF in pre-polymerization solution. Then, the sulfhydryl-modified COF hybrid polymer (poly(COF-SH-HIPE)) monolithic column was evaluated for the extraction of heavy metal ions, and a method based on poly(COF-SH-HIPE) monolithic capillary microextraction on-line coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry detection was developed for analysis of trace Cd, Hg and Pb in human fluid samples.

Hydrophilic-Oleophobic, Macroporous Polymers Enabled by In-Situ Polymerization and Foaming for Removing Water from Oils

Porous polymers with hydrophilicity and oleophobicity are promising for removing water from various oil-water mixtures (including emulsions), but the preparation of such polymers is usually complicated and time-consuming. Herein, a novel stragey, in situ polymerization and foaming, has been developed to fabricate hydrophilic-oleophobic porous polymers in a facile manner within seconds. The porous polymers from pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate) and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate showed hydrophilicity and underwater oleophobicity, enabling the removal of water from oil-water mixtures and surfactant-stabilized, water-in-oil (w/o) emulsions, with a high efficiency of 99.9% and excellent reusability, without obvious deterioation after 10 cycles. With incorporatin of 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyl methacrylate, the resulting porous polymers showed hydrophilicity and oleophobicty in air, providing an additional function of antioil-fouling ability both in dry state and in the process of oil-water separation. Moreover, both the two types of the porous polymers showed robust compression, without fracture and changes in wetting property after cycles of compression at 70% strain and high fatigue-resistant elasticity, without obvious plastic deformation after 1000 compression-release cycles. The facile and rapid preparation, hydrophiclity-oleophobicity, and robustness in compression and elasticity enabled the porous polymers to be good candidates for removing water from various oil-water mixtures.

Hydroxyapatite nanoparticle-modified porous bone grafts with improved cell attachment

Emulsion-templated foams have displayed promise as injectable bone grafts; however, the use of a surfactant as an emulsifier resulted in relatively small pores and impedes cell attachment. Hydroxyapatite nanoparticles were explored as an alternative stabilizer to address these limitations. To this end, hydroxyapatite nanoparticles were first modified with myristic acid to generate the appropriate balance of hydrophobicity to stabilize a water-in-oil emulsion of neopentyl glycol diacrylate and 1,4-butanedithiol. In situ surface modification of the resulting foam with hydroxyapatite was confirmed with elemental mapping and transmission electron microscopy. Nanoparticle-stabilized foams displayed improved human mesenchymal stem cell viability (91 ± 5%) over surfactant-stabilized foams (23 ± 11%). Although the pore size was appropriate for bone grafting applications (115 ± 71 μm), the foams lacked the interconnected architecture necessary for cell infiltration. We hypothesized that a co-stabilization approach with both surfactant and nanoparticles could be used to achieve interconnected pores while maintaining improved cell attachment and larger pore sizes. A range of hydroxyapatite nanoparticle and surfactant concentrations were investigated to determine the effects on microarchitecture and cell behavior. By balancing these interactions, a co-stabilized foam was identified that possessed large, interconnected pores (108 ± 67 μm) and improved cell viability and attachment. The co-stabilized foam was then evaluated as an injectable bone graft including network formation, microscale integration with bone, push out strength, and compressive properties. Overall, this work demonstrated that in situ surface modification with nHA improved cell attachment while retaining desirable bone grafting features and injectability.

Highly Porous Polymer Beads Coated with Nanometer-Thick Metal Oxide Films for Photocatalytic Oxidation of Bisphenol A

Highly porous metal oxide-polymer nanocomposites are attracting considerable interest due to their unique structural and functional features. A porous polymer matrix brings properties such as high porosity and permeability, while the metal oxide phase adds functionality. For the metal oxide phase to perform its function, it must be fully accessible, and this is possible only at the pore surface, but functioning surfaces require controlled engineering, which remains a challenge. Here, highly porous nanocomposite beads based on thin metal oxide nanocoatings and polymerized high internal phase emulsions (polyHIPEs) are demonstrated. By leveraging the unique properties of polyHIPEs, i.e., a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected network of macropores, and high-precision of the atomic-layer-deposition technique (ALD), we were able to homogeneously coat the entire surface of the pores in polyHIPE beads with TiO2-, ZnO-, and Al2O3-based nanocoatings. Parameters such as nanocoating thickness, growth per cycle (GPC), and metal oxide (MO) composition were systematically controlled by varying the number of deposition cycles and dosing time under specific process conditions. The combination of polyHIPE structure and ALD technique proved advantageous, as MO-nanocoatings with thicknesses between 11 ± 3 and 40 ± 9 nm for TiO2 or 31 ± 6 and 74 ± 28 nm for ZnO and Al2O3, respectively, were successfully fabricated. It has been shown that the number of ALD cycles affects both the thickness and crystallinity of the MO nanocoatings. Finally, the potential of ALD-derived TiO2-polyHIPE beads in photocatalytic oxidation of an aqueous bisphenol A (BPA) solution was demonstrated. The beads exhibited about five times higher activity than nanocomposite beads prepared by the conventional (Pickering) method. Such ALD-derived polyHIPE nanocomposites could find wide application in nanotechnology, sensor development, or catalysis.

Surfactant-free gelatin-stabilised biodegradable polymerised high internal phase emulsions with macroporous structures

High internal phase emulsion (HIPE) templating is a well-established method for the generation of polymeric materials with high porosity (>74%) and degree of interconnectivity. The porosity and pore size can be altered by adjusting parameters during emulsification, which affects the properties of the resulting porous structure. However, there remain challenges for the fabrication of polyHIPEs, including typically small pore sizes (∼20-50 μm) and the use of surfactants, which can limit their use in biological applications. Here, we present the use of gelatin, a natural polymer, during the formation of polyHIPE structures, through the use of two biodegradable polymers, polycaprolactone-methacrylate (PCL-M) and polyglycerol sebacate-methacrylate (PGS-M). When gelatin is used as the internal phase, it is capable of stabilising emulsions without the need for an additional surfactant. Furthermore, by changing the concentration of gelatin within the internal phase, the pore size of the resulting polyHIPE can be tuned. 5% gelatin solution resulted in the largest mean pore size, increasing from 53 μm to 80 μm and 28 μm to 94 µm for PCL-M and PGS-M respectively. In addition, the inclusion of gelatin further increased the mechanical properties of the polyHIPEs and increased the period an emulsion could be stored before polymerisation. Our results demonstrate the potential to use gelatin for the fabrication of surfactant-free polyHIPEs with macroporous structures, with potential applications in tissue engineering, environmental and agricultural industries.

High internal phase emulsions stabilized by alkaline-extracted walnut protein isolates and their application in food 3D printing

Alkaline-extracted walnut protein isolates showed relatively poor solubility and emulsifying properties in many previous studies. However, whether they can be used as potential emulsifiers to stabilize high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) remains unknown. Herein, walnut protein isolates were prepared by alkaline extraction from walnut kernels with or without pellicles (named PAWPI and AWPI, respectively). PAWPI conjugated with pellicle polyphenols showed improved solubility and higher antioxidant capacity than AWPI. HIPEs were fabricated via a one-step method using AWPI or PAWPI as the sole protein emulsifier. HIPEs (oil fraction of 0.8, with 0.1% β-carotene) could be stabilized by PAWPI at a relatively low concentration of 0.2% (w/v), while at least 1% (w/v) AWPI was required to effectively stabilize HIPEs. HIPEs stabilized by PAWPI had smaller oil droplet sizes than those stabilized by AWPI. Rheological analysis indicated that PAWPI-stabilized HIPEs showed higher viscosity and better viscoelasticity than AWPI-stabilized HIPEs. Large-amplitude oscillation shearing analysis suggested that PAWPI-stabilized HIPEs were stiffer but more brittle than AWPI-stabilized HIPEs. Moreover, both PAWPI- and AWPI-stabilized HIPEs exhibited good storage stability and were relatively stable against heat treatment and ionic strength. PAWPI-stabilized HIPEs showed a higher protective capacity for encapsulated β-carotene than AWPI-stabilized HIPEs. In addition, PAWPI-stabilized HIPEs showed good 3D printability and could be used as a promising edible ink.

Investigating the Potential of Electroless Nickel Plating for Fabricating Ultra-Porous Metal-Based Lattice Structures Using PolyHIPE Templates

The use of polymerized high internal phase emulsions (polyHIPEs) as templates for electroless nickel plating is a promising method for producing ultra-porous metallic lattice structures with consistent wall thickness. These structures have desirable properties such as low density, high specific strength, resilience, and absorbency, making them suitable for various applications including battery electrodes, catalyst supports, and acoustic or vibration damping. This study aimed to optimize and investigate the electroless nickel plating process on polyHIPEs. Initially, a surfactant (Hypermer)-stabilized water-in-oil emulsion based on 2-ethylhexyl-acrylate and isobornyl-acrylate was used as a 3D printing resin to create polyHIPE structures. Then, the electroless nickel plating process was optimized using polyHIPE discs. The study also examined the effects of air, argon, and reducing atmospheres during the heating process to remove the polyHIPE template using metallized 3D-printed polyHIPE lattice structures. The findings indicated that different atmospheres led to the formation of distinct compounds. While nickel-coated polyHIPEs were fully oxidized in an air atmosphere, nickel phosphide (Ni3P) structures occurred in argon and reducing atmospheres along Ni metal. Moreover, in argon and reducing atmospheres, the porous structure of the polyHIPEs was retained as the internal structure was completely carbonized. Overall, the study demonstrated that intricate polyHIPE structures can be used as templates to create ultra-porous metal-based lattices for a wide range of applications.

Quantification of polystyrene microsphere attachment probability at the oil‒water interface using a microfluidic platform

This study investigates the effects of interparticle interactions and wettability on the particle attachment efficacy to the oil‒water interface. Three types of PS particles with different surface functional groups were examined at varying salt concentrations and the number of particles injected into the interface. Based on the microfluidic method and the surface coverage measurement, we found that the two contributing factors significantly influenced particle attachment efficiency to the interface, while the wettability factor has a major contribution. This research contributes to the understanding of physicochemical aspects of particle assembly at fluid interfaces and can offer strategies for forming tailored structures with desired interfacial properties.

All-oil Constructs Stabilized by Cellulose Nanocrystal Surfactants

Constructing all-oil systems with desired geometries and responsiveness would produce a new class of reconfigurable materials that can be used for applications that are not compatible with water or aqueous systems, a fascinating goal to achieve but severely limited by the lack of surfactants. Here, we demonstrate an efficient strategy to stabilize oil-oil interfaces by using the co-assembly between the cellulose nanocrystal and amine-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS-NH₂). Cellulose nanocrystal surfactants (CNCSs) form and assemble in situ at the interface, showing significantly enhanced binding energy and acid-dependent interfacial activity. When CNCSs jam at the interface, a robust assembly with exceptional mechanical properties can be achieved, allowing the 3D printing of all-oil devices on demand. Using CNCSs as emulsifiers, oil-in-oil high internal phase emulsions can be prepared by one-step homogenization and, when used as templates, porous materials that require water-sensitive monomers can be synthesized. These results open a new platform for stabilizing and structuring all-oil systems, providing numerous applications for microreactors, encapsulation, delivery, and tissue engineering scaffolds.

Synthesis of patterned polyHIPE-hydrogel composite materials using thiol-ene chemistry

Elastomeric materials combining multiple properties within a single composite are highly desired in applications including biomaterials interfaces, actuators, and soft robotics. High spatial resolution is required to impart different properties across the composite for the intended application, but many techniques used to prepare these composites rely on multistep and complex methods. There is a need for the development of simple and efficient platforms to design layered composite materials. Here, we report the synthesis of horizontally- and vertically-patterned composites consisting of PDMS-based polymerized high internal phase emulsion (polyHIPE) porous elastomers and PDMS/PEG hydrogels. Composites with defined interfaces that were mechanically robust were prepared, and rheological analysis of the polyHIPE and hydrogel layers showed storage moduli values of ∼ 35 kPa and 45 kPa respectively. The compressive Young's Modulus and maximum strain of the polyHIPEs were dependent on the thiol to ene ratio in the formulation and obtained values ranging from 6 to 25 kPa and 50-65% respectively. The mechanical properties, total porosity of the polyHIPE, and swelling ratio of the hydrogel were unaffected by the patterning technique compared to non-patterned controls. PolyHIPE-hydrogel composite materials having up to 7-different horizontally pattered layers could be prepared that could expand and contract up hydration and drying.

Development of PCL PolyHIPE Substrates for 3D Breast Cancer Cell Culture

Cancer is a becoming a huge social and economic burden on society, becoming one of the most significant barriers to life expectancy in the 21st century. In particular, breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death for women. One of the most significant difficulties to finding efficient therapies for specific cancers, such as breast cancer, is the efficiency and ease of drug development and testing. Tissue-engineered (TE) in vitro models are rapidly developing as an alternative to animal testing for pharmaceuticals. Additionally, porosity included within these structures overcomes the diffusional mass transfer limit whilst enabling cell infiltration and integration with surrounding tissue. Within this study, we investigated the use of high-molecular-weight polycaprolactone methacrylate (PCL-M) polymerised high-internal-phase emulsions (polyHIPEs) as a scaffold to support 3D breast cancer (MDA-MB-231) cell culture. We assessed the porosity, interconnectivity, and morphology of the polyHIPEs when varying mixing speed during formation of the emulsion, successfully demonstrating the tunability of these polyHIPEs. An ex ovo chick chorioallantoic membrane assay identified the scaffolds as bioinert, with biocompatible properties within a vascularised tissue. Furthermore, in vitro assessment of cell attachment and proliferation showed promising potential for the use of PCL polyHIPEs to support cell growth. Our results demonstrate that PCL polyHIPEs are a promising material to support cancer cell growth with tuneable porosity and interconnectivity for the fabrication of perfusable 3D cancer models.

Hierarchical Emulsion-Templated Monoliths (polyHIPEs) as Scaffolds for Covalent Immobilization of P. acidilactici

The immobilized cell fermentation technique (IMCF) has gained immense popularity in recent years due to its capacity to enhance metabolic efficiency, cell stability, and product separation during fermentation. Porous carriers used as cell immobilization facilitate mass transfer and isolate the cells from an adverse external environment, thus accelerating cell growth and metabolism. However, creating a cell-immobilized porous carrier that guarantees both mechanical strength and cell stability remains challenging. Herein, templated by water-in-oil (w/o) high internal phase emulsions (HIPE), we established a tunable open-cell polymeric P(St-co-GMA) monolith as a scaffold for the efficient immobilization of Pediococcus acidilactici (P. acidilactici). The porous framework's mechanical property was substantially improved by incorporating the styrene monomer and cross-linker divinylbenzene (DVB) in the HIPE's external phase, while the epoxy groups on glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) supply anchoring sites for P. acidilactici, securing the immobilization to the inner wall surface of the void. For the fermentation of immobilized P. acidilactici, the polyHIPEs permit efficient mass transfer, which increases along with increased interconnectivity of the monolith, resulting in higher _L-lactic acid yield compared to that of suspended cells with an increase of 17%. The relative _L-lactic acid production is constantly maintained above 92.9% of their initial relative production after 10 cycles, exhibiting both its great cycling stability and the durability of the material structure. Furthermore, the procedure during recycle batch also simplifies downstream separation operations.

Metal Oxide-Derived MOF-74 Polymer Composites through Pickering Emulsion-Templating: Interfacial Recrystallization, Hierarchical Architectures, and CO2 Capture Performances

Currently, metal-organic framework (MOF)-polymer composites are attracting great interest as a step forward in making MOFs a useful material for industrially relevant applications. However, most of the research is engaged with finding promising MOF/polymer pairs and less with the synthetic methods by which these materials are then combined, albeit hybridization has a significant impact on the properties of the new composite macrostructure. Thus, the focus of this work is on the innovative hybridization of MOFs and polymerized high internal phase emulsions (polyHIPEs), two classes of materials that exhibit porosity at different length scales. The main thrust is the in situ secondary recrystallization, i.e., growth of MOFs from metal oxides previously fixed in polyHIPEs by the Pickering HIPE-templating, and further structure-function study of composites through the CO₂ capture behavior. The combination of Pickering HIPE polymerization and secondary recrystallization at the metal oxide-polymer interface proved advantageous, as MOF-74 isostructures based on different metal cations (M²⁺ = Mg, Co, or Zn) could be successfully shaped in the polyHIPEs' macropores without affecting the properties of the individual components. The successful hybridization resulted in highly porous, co-continuous MOF-74-polyHIPE composite monoliths forming an architectural hierarchy with pronounced macro-microporosity, in which the MOF microporosity is almost completely accessible for gases, i.e., about 87% of the micropores, and the monoliths exhibit excellent mechanical stability. The well-structured porous architecture of the composites showed superior CO₂ capture performance compared to the parent MOF-74 powders. Both adsorption and desorption kinetics are significantly faster for composites. Regeneration by temperature swing adsorption recovers about 88% of the total adsorption capacity of the composite, while it is lower for the parent MOF-74 powders (about 75%). Finally, the composites exhibit about 30% improvement in CO₂ uptake under working conditions compared to the parent MOF-74 powders, and some of the composites are able to retain 99% of the original adsorption capacity after five adsorption/desorption cycles.

Fabrication of Macroporous Polymers via Water-in-Water Emulsion-Templating Technique

Emulsion-templated porous polymers have attracted broad attention due to their great application prospects in many fields. However, scaling up the emulsion-templated technique from the lab to industrial production remains a great challenge, especially for systems involving an oil-in-water (o/w) emulsion template that is used normally for preparing hydrophilic porous polymers. These systems require large amounts of organic solvents to be the internal phase (i.e., major phase) of the emulsion templates, which causes a significant environmental impact and cost. Herein, a water-in-water (w/w) emulsion-templated technique is presented to prepare porous hydrophilic polymers. The w/w emulsion is prepared by mixing a PEG aqueous solution and a dextran aqueous solution with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as a stabilizer. With varying the mass ratio of dextran/PEG in the range of 1/2 to 8/1, a series of dextran-rich-phase-in-PEG-rich-phase (dextran/PEG) emulsions are obtained. Subsequently, monomers, such as acrylamide, acrylic acid, and/or 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid, are introduced to the emulsions to fabricate porous hydrophilic polymers. These polymers have an open-cell structure like those of o/w emulsion-templated polymers. The system developed herein is an environmentally friendly, low cost, and universal emulsion-templated method toward porous hydrophilic polymers, which avoids the defects caused by the presence of large amounts of organic solvents in an o/w emulsion-templating method and can be moved from the lab to industrial-scale production.

Synthesis, Characterization and Application of a MIP-polyHIPE for Selective Extraction of Angiotensin II Receptor Antagonists Residues in Natural Waters

Polymers via high internal phase emulsion (polyHIPEs) were molecularly imprinted with Irbesartan, an antihypertensive drug belonging to the class of angiotensin II receptor antagonists (sartan drugs), chosen for the proof-of-concept extraction of hazardous emerging contaminants from water. Different analyte-functional monomer molar ratios (1:100, 1:30 and 1:15) were investigated, and the MIP polyHIPEs have been characterized, parallel to the not imprinted polymer (NIP), by batch sorption experiments. The material with the highest template-functional monomer ratio was the best for Irbesartan removal, showing a sorption capacity fivefold higher than the NIP. Regarding the adsorption kinetics, the analyte-sorbent equilibrium was reached after about 3 h, and the film diffusion model best fitted the kinetic profile. Selectivity was further demonstrated by testing Losartan, another sartan drug, observing a fourfold lower sorption capacity, but still higher than that of NIP. The polymers were also synthesized in cartridges for solid-phase extraction (SPE), which was helpful for evaluating the breakthrough curves and performing pre-concentrations. These have been done in tap and river water samples (100-250 mL, 15-500 µg L^-1 Irbesartan), obtaining quantitative sorption/desorption on the MIP-polyHIPE (RSD < 14%, n = 3). The NIP provided a recovery of just around 30%, evidence of partial uptake of the target from water.

Macroscale Fabrication of Lightweight and Strong Porous Carbon Foams through Template-Coating Pair Design

Manufacturing of low-density-high-strength carbon foams can benefit the construction, transportation, and packaging industries. One successful route to lightweight and mechanically strong carbon foams involves pyrolysis of polymeric architectures, which is inevitably accompanied by drastic volumetric shrinkage (usually >98%). As such, a challenge of these materials lies in maintaining bulk dimensions of building struts that span orders of magnitude difference in length scale from centimeters to nanometers. This work demonstrates fabrication of macroscale low-density-high-strength carbon foams that feature exceptional dimensional stability through pyrolysis of robust template-coating pairs. The template serves as the architectural blueprint and contains strength-imparting properties (e.g., high node density and small strut dimensions); it is composed of a low char-yielding porous polystyrene backbone with a high carbonization-onset temperature. The coating serves to imprint and transcribe the template architecture into pyrolytic carbon; it is composed of a high char-yielding conjugated polymer with a relatively low carbonization-onset temperature. The designed carbonization mismatch enables structural inheritance, while the decomposition mismatch affords hollow struts, minimizing density. The carbons synthesized through this new framework exhibit remarkable dimensional stability (≈80% dimension retention; ≈50% volume retention) and some of the highest specific strengths (≈0.13 GPa g^-1 cm³ ) among reported carbon foams derived from porous polymer templates.

Photoresponsive Emulsion-Templated Porous Materials via Orthogonal Photoclick Chemistry

The functionalization of emulsion-templated porous polymers (polyHIPEs) utilizing modern and efficient chemistries is an important avenue for tailoring the properties of these scaffolds for specific and specialized applications. Herein, tetrazole photoclick chemistry is utilized for the efficient functionalization of polyHIPEs synthesized from various monomer systems and polymerization chemistries. Using both radical polymerization and thiol-ene polymerization, polyHIPEs with well-defined, interconnected open-cell morphologies are synthesized with tetrazole concentrations ranging from 0 to 5 w/v %, with the pore diameters ranging from 3 to 24 μm. Analyzed by fluorescence spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, and confocal microscopy, spatially controlled functionalization to generate photopatterned fluorescent polyHIPEs is demonstrated via the reaction with residual acrylate and thiol groups. In addition, the scaffolds can be readily functionalized with external dipolarophiles such as acrylates to incorporate a functionality onto the polyHIPE surface. With many functional tetrazoles also reported in the literature, a PEG-tetrazole is also used to explore the photoinduced functionalization of polyHIPEs possessing tunable ratios of thiol and acrylate groups, and the effect on fluorescence, wettability, and biocompatibility is analyzed. Overall, the reaction is shown to be a broadly applicable tool for polyHIPE functionalization with many avenues for further development toward specific applications.

Dual-functionalized Pickering HIPE templated poly(ɛ-caprolactone) scaffold for maxillofacial implants

High internal phase emulsion (HIPE) templated poly (ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) scaffolds have gained widespread attention for large-sized bone defects due to its tuneable 3D architecture and ease of fabricating crosslinked PCL (cPCL) scaffolds. However, extremely high stabilizer (surfactant or nanoparticle) concentration and negligence of microenvironment for regeneration sites like alveolar bones have restrained industrial acceptance of these scaffolds. Herein, we demonstrated the fabrication of nanocomposite cPCL scaffolds within Pickering HIPE templates stabilized using modified silica nanoparticles (mSiNP) concentrations as low as 0.1 to 1.0 wt%. Using an unconventional approach, the mSiNP Pickering stabilizer was added in dispersed phase, contradicting Bancroft's rule. The colloidal stability was attained due to faster drifting of mSiNP towards the interface when it was dispersed in silicone oil. Scaffolds with tuneable properties were fabricated by controlling the mSiNP concentration and ϕ_d. Further, cPCL scaffolds were functionalized using clove oil (CO) to improve their efficiency in eradicating S. aureus and E. coli by disrupting their cellular integrity. Additionally, formation of biofilm on the surface of the scaffolds was successfully inhibited by the incorporation of CO. CO-functionalized scaffolds demonstrated excellent cytocompatibility towards MG-63 cells allowing their successful adhesion and proliferation on the surface of the scaffolds.

Cellulose-based, flexible polyurethane polyHIPEs with quasi-closed-cell structures and high stability for thermal insulation

Cellulose-based, closed-cell porous materials templated from emulsions are promising for thermal insulation, but their low stability imposed by physical interaction hinders the materials from real applications. Herein, we report the fabrication of cellulose-based, flexible polyurethane polyHIPEs with quasi-closed-cell structures, high stability and flexibility for thermal insulation. The polyHIPEs were prepared from cellulose-stabilized Pickering high internal phase emulsions through interfacial crosslinking using isocyanate. The resulting polyurethane polyHIPEs showed controllable external shapes, quasi-closed-cell structures, high flexibility, low density, and robust compression (without fracture even after compression to 30 % original height). The crosslinking enabled the polyHIPEs to show hydrophobicity, good stability (without breakage and dissolution observed after immersing in NaOH solution at pH 12, HCl solution at pH 1 and hot water at 100 °C, for 24 h) and decreased moisture uptake (below 1 %). The low density and quasi-closed-cell structures endowed the polyHIPEs with high thermal insulation, with thermal conductivity as low as 33.1 mW/(m K). These features make the cellulose-based, closed-cell polyHIPEs as an excellent candidate for thermal insulting.

High Internal Phase Pickering Emulsion Stabilized by Lipase-Coated ZIF-8 Nanoparticles towards Recyclable Biphasic Biocatalyst

High internal phase Pickering emulsion (Pickering HIPE) stabilized by enzyme-decorated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) nanoparticles is developed for biphasic biocatalysts to enhance lipase catalysis and recycling. Specifically, enzyme decorated nanoparticles are prepared via ZIF-8 physisorption of a model lipase Candida antarctica Lipase B (CALB), named ZIF-8@CALB, to be both Pickering stabilizer and catalytic sites. An oil-in-water (o/w) Pickering HIPE with oil/water volume ratio of 3 could then be fabricated by homogenizing p-nitrophenyl palmitate (p-NPP) n-heptane solution into the ZIF-8@CALB aqueous dispersion. The biocatalytic hydrolysis of p-NPP is conducted by just standing the biphasic system at room temperature. The Pickering HIPE system achieves a product conversion of up to 48.9% within 0.5 h, whereas the p-NPP n-heptane solution system containing free CALB only achieves a stable product conversion of 6.8% for the same time. Moreover, the ZIF@CALB could be recovered by a simple centrifugation at 800 rpm, and then reused in the next cycle. The hydrolysis equilibrium conversion rate of p-NPP keeps over 40% for all 8 cycles, reflecting the high catalytic efficiency and recyclability of the Pickering HIPE. This study provides a new opportunity in designing Enzyme-MOFs-based Pickering interfacial biocatalyst for practical applications.

Hierarchical Macroporous PolyDCPD Composites from Surface-Modified Calcite-Stabilized High Internal Phase Emulsions

High Internal Phase Emulsions (HIPEs) of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) were prepared using mixtures of surface-modified calcite (mCalcite) and a non-ionic surfactant. Twelve different emulsion formulations were created using an experimental design methodology. Three distinctive levels of the internal phase ratio, the amount of mCalcite loading, and the surfactant were used to prepare the HIPEs. Accordingly, macroporous polyDCPD composites were synthesized by performing ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) on the HIPEs. The variations in the morphological and physical properties of the composites were investigated in terms of experimental parameters. In the end, five different model equations were derived with a confidence level of 95%. The main and binary interaction effects of the experimental parameters on the responses, such as the average cavity size, interconnecting pore size, specific surface area, foam density, and compression modulus, were demonstrated. The synergistic interaction between the amount of surfactant, the amount of mCalcite loading, and the internal phase ratio appeared to have a dominant role in the average cavity diameter. The solo effect of the internal phase ratio on the interconnecting pore size, foam density, and compression modulus was confirmed. In addition, it was demonstrated that the specific surface area of the composites was mainly changed depending on the amount of mCalcite loading.

Functionalized Fe3O4-based methyl methacrylate Pickering PolyHIPE composites costabilized by fluorinated block copolymer for oil/water separation

High internal phase emulsion (HIPE) technology has been emerged as a prodigious source to create tailor-made porous structures. This type of emulsion contains significantly higher amount of water in it, which is only possible with special type of stabilizers. Most specifically, the monomers with sufficiently high solubility in water such as methyl methacrylate (MMA) make it more cumbersome to stabilize in the form of HIPE. Here we have reported the combination of stabilizers including fluorinated block copolymer Poly (2-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate-b-Poly(trifluoroethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA-b-PTFEMA) and humic acid modified iron-oxide (HA-Fe₃O₄) nanoparticles (NPs) to stabilize HIPE, which resulted in highly porous and interconnected products. Fluorinated block copolymers with inherent hydrophobic nature along with iron oxide nanoparticles increased the water repellency of MMA based polymeric monoliths. Increasing the amount of stabilizer increased the porosity and BET specific surface area to 83.8% and 27 ± 0.8 μm, respectively. The prepared porous materials demonstrated hydrophobic characteristics while adsorbing oil from the surface of water up to 16 g/g. Moreover, the adsorbed oil from the prepared monolith was recovered by using simple centrifugation method without damaging the structure. This research opens new avenues to prepare more useful oil and water separation materials such as membranes, pollutant adsorbers, and so on.

Porous Polymerized High Internal Phase Emulsions Prepared Using Proteins and Essential Oils for Antimicrobial Applications

High internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) provide a versatile platform for encapsulating large volumes of therapeutics that are immiscible in water. A stable scaffold is obtained by polymerizing the external phase, resulting in polyHIPEs. However, fabrication of polyHIPEs usually requires using a considerable quantity of surfactants along with nonbiocompatible components, which hinders their biological applications, e.g., drug-eluting devices. We describe here a straightforward method for generating porous biomaterials by using proteins as both the emulsifier and the building blocks for the fabrication of polyHIPEs. We demonstrate the versatility of this method by using different essential oils as the internal phase. After the gelation of protein building blocks is triggered by the addition of reducing agents, a stable protein hydrogel containing essential oils can be formed. These oils can be either extracted to obtain protein-based porous scaffolds or slowly released for antimicrobial applications.

Preparation of a Dual-Functionalized Acid-Base Macroporous Polymer via High Internal Phase Emulsion Templating as a Reusable Catalyst for One-Pot Deacetalization-Henry Reaction

A macroporous dual-functional acid-base covalent organic polymer catalyst poly(St-VBC)-NH₂-SO₃H was prepared using high internal phase emulsion polymerization using vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC), styrene (St), and divinylbenzene (DVB) as substrates toluene as a porogenic solvent, and subsequent modification with ethylenediamine and 1,3-propane sultone. The role of various amounts of toluene as the porogenic solvent as well as the amount of 1,3-propane sultone (different ratio of acid/base sites) on the structure of the prepared materials have been carefully investigated. The prepared materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), CHNS elemental analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), elemental mapping, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and thermalgravimetric analysis (TGA). The catalytic activity of the poly(St-VBC)-NH₂-SO₃H series with different acid/base densities was assessed for one-pot cascade C-C bond-forming reactions involving deacetylation-Henry reactions. The poly(St-VBC)-NH₂-SO₃H(20) sample bearing 1.82 mmol/g of N (base site) and 1.16 mmol/g (acid site) showed the best catalytic activity. The catalyst demonstrated superior activity compared to the homogeneous catalysts, poly(St-DVB)-SO₃H+EDA, poly(St-VBC)-NH₂+chlorosulfonic acid, and poly(St-DVB)-SO₃H+poly(St-VBC)-NH₂ as the catalyst system. The optimized catalyst showed excellent catalytic performance with 100% substrate conversion and 100% yield of the final product in the one-pot production of β-nitrostyrene from benzaldehyde dimethyl acetal under cascade reactions comprising acid-catalyzed deacetalization and base-catalyzed Henry reactions. It was shown that these catalysts were reusable for up to four consecutive runs with a very slight loss of activity. The excellent performance of the catalyst was attributed to the excellent chemical and physical properties of the developed support since it provides an elegant route for preparing site-isolated acid-base dual heterogenized functional groups and preventing their deactivation via chemical neutralization.

Macroporous perovskite nanocrystal composites for ultrasensitive copper ion detection

Accumulation of heavy metal ions, including copper ions (Cu²⁺), presents a serious threat to human health and to the environment. A substantial amount of research has focused on detecting such species in aqueous solutions. However, progress towards ultrasensitive and easy-to-use sensors for non-aqueous solutions is still limited. Here, we focus on the detection of copper species in hexane, realising ultra-sensitive detection through a fluorescence-based approach. To achieve this, a novel macroporous composite material has been developed featuring luminescent CsPbBr₃ nanocrystals (NCs) chemically adhered to a polymerized high internal phase emulsion (polyHIPE) substrate through surface thiol groups. Due to this thiol functionality, sub-monolayer NC formation is realised, which also renders outstanding stability of the composite in the ambient environment. Copper detection is achieved through a direct solution based immersion of the CsPbBr₃-(SH)polyHIPE composite, which results in concentration-dependent quenching of the NC photoluminescence. This newly developed sensor has a limit of detection (LOD) for copper as low as 1 × 10^-16 M, and a wide operating window spanning 10^-2 to 10^-16 M. Moreover, the composite exhibits excellent selectivity among different transition metals.
