Ultramicroporous crosslinked polyxanthene-poly(biphenyl piperidinium)-based anion exchange membranes for water electrolyzers operating under highly alkaline conditions

Anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWEs) suffer from low efficiencies and durability, due to the unavailability of appropriate anion exchange membranes (AEM). Herein, a rigid ladder-like polyxanthene crosslinker was developed for the preparation of ultramicroporous crosslinked polyxanthene-poly(biphenyl piperidinium)-based AEMs. Due to the synergetic effects of their ultramicroporous structure and microphase-separation morphology, the crosslinked membranes showed high OH- conductivity (up to 163 mS cm-1 at 80 °C). Furthermore, these AEMs also exhibited moderate water uptake, excellent dimensional stability, and remarkable alkaline stability. The single-cell AEMWE based on QPBP-PX-15% and equipped with non-noble catalysts achieved a current density of 3000 mA cm-2 at 2.03 V (compared to PiperION's 2.26 V) in 6 M KOH solution at 80 °C, which outperformed many AEMWEs that used platinum-group-metal catalysts. Thus, the crosslinked AEMs developed in this study showed significant potential for application in AEMWEs fed with concentrated alkaline solutions.

Rational Understanding Hydroxide Diffusion Mechanism in Anion Exchange Membranes during Electrochemical Processes with RDAnalyzer

Enhancing the understanding of hydroxide transport mechanisms in anion exchange membranes (AEMs) is beneficial for the rational design of high-performance AEMs in the renewable energy system. However, the high complexity and lack of adequate analytic tools make it challenging to clarify different mechanisms unambiguously. Herein, we developed an in-house toolkit, the Reactive Diffusion Analyzer (RDAnalyzer), to conduct an effective analysis of hydroxide diffusion mechanisms from ReaxFF molecular dynamic simulations. Using the experimentally well-synthesized T20NC6NC5N as a model system, we successfully decoupled the hydroxide diffusion mechanisms into free Vehicular and free Grotthuss, as well as associated Vehicular and associated Grotthuss, which was not yet achieved previously. Meanwhile, RDAnalyzer managed to specifically identify the drift length of hydroxide species for each mechanism under the electric field, which worked as a useful variable for calculating the conductivity of AEMs. Our theoretically predicted conductivity for T20NC6NC5N agrees reasonably with experimental results, indicating the reliability of RDAnalyzer. This work not only provides a rational understanding of the complex hydroxide diffusion mechanisms in AEMs but also holds the potential to guide the rational design of high-performance AEMs with computations.

Bioadhesive-Inspired Ionomer for Membrane Electrode Assembly Interface Reinforcement in Fuel Cells

Anion exchange membrane fuel cells promise a sustainable and ecofriendly energy conversion pathway yet suffer from insufficient performance and durability. Drawing inspiration from mussel foot adhesion proteins for the first time, we herein demonstrate catechol-modified ionomers that synergistically reinforce the membrane electrode assembly interface and triple-phase boundary inside catalyst layers. The resulting ionomers present exceptional alkaline stability with only slight ionic conductivity declines after treatment in 2 M NaOH aqueous solution at 80 °C for 2500 h. Adopting catechol-modified ionomer as both anion exchange membrane and binder achieves a single-cell performance increase of 34%, and more importantly, endows fuel cell operation at a current density of 0.4 A cm-2 for over 300 h with negligible performance degradation (with a cell voltage decay rate of 0.03 mV h-1). Combining theoretical and experimental investigations, we reveal the molecular adhesion mechanism between the catechol-modified ionomer and Pt catalyst and illuminate the effect on the catalyst layer microstructure. Of fundamental interest, this bioadhesive-inspired strategy is critical to enabling knowledge-driven ionomer design and is promising for diverse membrane electrode assembly configurational applications.

Tuning polar discrimination between side chains to improve the performance of anion exchange membranes

Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are the heart of alkaline fuel cells and water electrolysis, and have made a great progress in recent years. However, AEMs are still unable to satisfy the needs of high conductivity and stability, hindering their widespread commercialization. Side chain regulations have been widely used to prepare highly conductive and durable AEMs. Here, we construct a series of polyaromatic AEMs grafted with fluorinated cation side chains and cation-free alkyl chains with different end groups to explore the polar discrimination of side chains on membrane performance. This work demonstrates that AEMs grafting the cation side chains with superhydrophobic fluorine pendent and alkyl side chains with hydrophilic pendent enhance water content and ion conductivity. This is due to the strong immiscibility between the hydrophilic and hydrophobic head groups which promotes the establishments of microphase separation and ion highways. Specifically, poly(binaphthyl-co-terphenyl piperidinium) containing fluorinated piperidinium side chains and alkyl chains with methoxy pendent (QBNTP-QFM) possesses a satisficed OH- conductivity (170.6 mS cm-1 at 80 °C) and can tolerate 5 M hot NaOH for 2100 h with only 3.4 % conductivity loss. Expectedly, the single cell with QBNTP-QFM yields a prominent maximum power density of 1.62 W cm-2 and the water electrolysis cell with QBNTP-QFM achieves a pronounced current density of 3.0 A cm-2 at 1.8 V, both cells also display a prominent durability for 120 h operation. The results prove that this side chain optimization can improve ion conductivity and is a promising method for AEM development.

Advances in Polyvinyl Alcohol-Based Membranes for Fuel Cells: A Comprehensive Review on Types, Synthesis, Modifications, and Performance Optimization

Fuel cell technology is at the forefront of sustainable energy solutions, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) membranes play an important role in improving performance. This article thoroughly investigates the various varieties of PVA membranes, their production processes, and the numerous modification tactics used to solve inherent problems. Various methods were investigated, including chemical changes, composite blending, and the introduction of nanocomposites. The factors impacting PVA membranes, such as proton conductivity, thermal stability, and selectivity, were investigated to provide comprehensive knowledge. By combining various research threads, this review aims to completely investigate the current state of PVA membranes in fuel cell applications, providing significant insights for both academic researchers and industry practitioners interested in efficient and sustainable energy conversion technologies. The transition from traditional materials such as Nafion to PVA membranes has been prompted by limitations associated with the former, such as complex synthesis procedures, reduced ionic conductivity at elevated temperatures, and prohibitively high costs, which have hampered their widespread adoption. As a result, modern research efforts are increasingly focused on the creation of alternative membranes that can compete with conventional technical efficacy and economic viability in the context of fuel cell technologies.

Novel Crosslinked Anion Exchange Membranes Based on Thermally Cured Epoxy Resin: Synthesis, Structure and Mechanical and Ion Transport Properties

Limitations in existing anion exchange membranes deter their use in the efficient treatment of industrial wastewater effluent. This work presents an approach to fabricating novel anion-conducting membranes using epoxy resin monomers like hydrophobic or hydrophilic diglycidyl ether and quaternized polyethyleneimine (PEI). Manipulating the diglycidyl ether nature, the quantitative composition of the copolymer and the conditions of quaternization allows control of the physicochemical properties of the membranes, including water uptake (20.0-330%), ion exchange capacity (1.5-3.7 mmol/g), ionic conductivity (0.2-17 mS/cm in the Cl form at 20 °C), potentiostatic transport numbers (75-97%), as well as mechanical properties. A relationship was established between copolymer structure and conductivity/selectivity trade-off. The higher the quaternized polyethyleneimine, diluent fraction, and hydrophilicity of diglycidyl ether, the higher the conductivity and the lower the permselectivity. Hydrophobic diglycidyl ether gives a much better conductivity/selectivity ratio since it provides a lower degree of hydration than hydrophilic diglycidyl ether. Different mesh and non-woven reinforcing materials were also examined. The developed membranes demonstrate good stability in both neutral and acidic environments, and their benchmark characteristics in laboratory electrodialysis cells and batch-mode dialysis experiments are similar to or superior to, commercial membranes such as Neosepta© AMX, FujiFilm© Type1, and Fumasep FAD-PET.

Separators and Membranes for Advanced Alkaline Water Electrolysis

Traditionally, alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) uses diaphragms to separate anode and cathode and is operated with 5-7 M KOH feed solutions. The ban of asbestos diaphragms led to the development of polymeric diaphragms, which are now the state of the art material. A promising alternative is the ion solvating membrane. Recent developments show that high conductivities can also be obtained in 1 M KOH. A third technology is based on anion exchange membranes (AEM); because these systems use 0-1 M KOH feed solutions to balance the trade-off between conductivity and the AEM's lifetime in alkaline environment, it makes sense to treat them separately as AEM WE. However, the lifetime of AEM increased strongly over the last 10 years, and some electrode-related issues like oxidation of the ionomer binder at the anode can be mitigated by using KOH feed solutions. Therefore, AWE and AEM WE may get more similar in the future, and this review focuses on the developments in polymeric diaphragms, ion solvating membranes, and AEM.

Stable Anion Exchange Membrane Bearing Quinuclidinium for High-performance Water Electrolysis

Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are core components in anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEM-WEs). However, the stability of functional quaternary ammonium cations, especially under high temperatures and harsh alkaline conditions, seriously affects their performance and durability. Herein, we synthesized a 1-methyl-3,3-diphenylquinuclidinium molecular building unit. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and accelerated aging analysis indicated that the quinine ring structure was exceedingly stable, and the SN2 degradation mechanism dominated. Through acid-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts polymerization, a series of branched poly(aryl-quinuclidinium) (PAQ-x) AEMs with controllable molecular weight and adjustable ion exchange capacity (IEC) were prepared. The stable quinine structure in PAQ-x was verified and retained in the ex situ alkaline stability. Furthermore, the branched polymer structure reduces the swelling rate and water uptake to achieve a tradeoff between dimensional stability and ionic conductivity, significantly improving the membrane's overall performance. Importantly, PAQ-5 was used in non-noble metal-based AEM-WE, achieving a high current density of 8 A cm-2 at 2 V and excellent stability over 2446 h in a gradient constant current test. Based on the excellent alkaline stability of this diaryl-quinuclidinium group, it can be further considered as a multifunctional building unit to create multi-topological polymers for energy conversion devices used in alkaline environments.

Novel Fluorinated Anion Exchange Membranes Based on Poly(Pentafluorophenyl-Carbazole) with High Ionic Conductivity and Alkaline Stability for Fuel Cell Applications

Constructing good microphase separation structures by designing different polymer backbones and ion-conducting groups is an effective strategy for improving the ionic conductivity and chemical stability of anion exchange membranes (AEMs). In this study, a series of AEMs based on the poly(pentafluorophenylcarbazole) backbone grafted with different cationic groups are designed and prepared to construct well-defined microphase separation morphology and improve the trade-off between the properties of AEMs. Highly hydrophobic fluorinated backbone and alkyl spaces enhance phase separation and construct interconnected hydrophilic channels for anion transport. The ionic conductivity of the PC-PF-QA membrane is 123 mS cm-1 at 80 °C, and the ionic conductivity of the PC-PF-QA membrane decreased by only 6% after 960 h of immersion at 60 °C in 1 M NaOH aqueous solution. The maximum peak power density of the single cell based on PC-PF-QA is 214 mW cm-2 at 60 °C.

Investigation of membranes-electrodes assemblies in anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs): Influence of ionomer ratio in catalyst layers

Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) have recently attracted significant attention as low-cost alternative fuel cells to traditional proton exchange membrane fuel cells because of the possible use of platinum-group metal-free electrocatalysts. Over the past decade, new materials dedicated to the alkaline medium, such as anion exchange membranes (AEMs) and anion exchange ionomers (AEIs), have been developed and studied in AEMFCs. However, only a few AEMs and AEIs are commercially available, and there are no ready-to-use membrane electrodes assemblies (MEAs) with the desired AEMs and AEIs. Consequently, the need to manufacture in-house CCMs or GDEs becomes a reality that we must face. This work deals with the influence of ionomer content on the prepared MEAs with the commercial anion exchange membrane and ionomer from Aemion™ Ionomr Innovations AF1-HNN8-2 and AP1-ENN8/HNN8 respectively and by varying the support (gas diffusion layer or membrane). The prepared MEAs were characterized morphologically by SEM and profilometry, as well as electrochemically by AEMFC polarization curves and cyclic voltammetry. In addition, an attempt to investigate water management was made with and without a reference electrode in the cell to understand the behavior of water in an operating AEMFC. Our results show that CCM-based MEAs can undergo deformation during the anion conversion step, leading to weakening of the membrane and hence faster degradation in the fuel cell. On the contrary, no deformation was observed for the GDEs during the anionic conversion, although the results are poorer due to (i) poor interface contact between membrane and GDE that depends on ionomer ratio in the ink and (ii) a high overpotential at the anode due to the production of water that cannot be effectively evacuated.

Strategies to enhance biohydrogen production from microalgae: A comprehensive review

Microalgae represent a promising renewable feedstock for the sustainable production of biohydrogen. Their high growth rates and ability to fix carbon utilizing just sunlight, water, and nutrients make them well-suited for this application. Recent advancements have focused on improving microalgal hydrogen yields and cultivation methods. This review aims to summarize recent developments in microalgal cultivation techniques and genetic engineering strategies for enhanced biohydrogen production. Specific areas of focus include novel microalgal species selection, immobilization methods, integrated hybrid systems, and metabolic engineering. Studies related to microalgal strain selection, cultivation methods, metabolic engineering, and genetic manipulations were compiled and analyzed. Promising microalgal species with high hydrogen production capabilities such as Synechocystis sp., Anabaena variabilis, and Chlamydomonas reinhardtii have been identified. Immobilization techniques like encapsulation in alginate and integration with dark fermentation have led to improved hydrogen yields. Metabolic engineering through modulation of hydrogenase activity and photosynthetic pathways shows potential for enhanced biohydrogen productivity. Considerable progress has been made in developing microalgal systems for biohydrogen. However, challenges around process optimization and scale-up remain. Future work involving metabolic modeling, photobioreactor design, and genetic engineering of electron transfer pathways could help realize the full potential of this renewable technology.

Stabilizing the Catalyst Layer for Durable and High Performance Alkaline Membrane Fuel Cells and Water Electrolyzers

Anion exchange membrane (AEM) fuel cells (AEMFCs) and water electrolyzers (AEMWEs) suffer from insufficient performance and durability compared with commercialized energy conversion systems. Great efforts have been devoted to designing high-quality AEMs and catalysts. However, the significance of the stability of the catalyst layer has been largely disregarded. Here, an in situ cross-linking strategy was developed to promote the interactions within the catalyst layer and the interactions between catalyst layer and AEM. The adhesion strength of the catalyst layer after cross-linking was improved 7 times compared with the uncross-linked catalyst layer due to the formation of covalent bonds between the catalyst layer and AEM. The AEMFC can be operated under 0.6 A cm-2 for 1000 h with a voltage decay rate of 20 μV h-1. The related AEMWE achieved an unprecedented current density of 15.17 A cm-2 at 2.0 V and was operated at 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 A cm-2 for 1000 h.

Highly Hydrophilic Zirconia Composite Anion Exchange Membrane for Water Electrolysis and Fuel Cells

To prepare anion exchange membranes with high water electrolysis and single fuel cell performance, an inorganic-organic composite (IOC) strategy with click cross-linked membranes coated with different contents of hydrophilic polar nanozirconia is proposed to fabricate composite membranes (CM) PBP-SH-Zrx. The performance test results showed that the CM PBP-SH-Zr4 not only has good through-plane ionic conductivity (167.7 mS cm-1, 80 °C), but also exhibits satisfactory dimensional stability (SR 16.5%, WU 206.4%, 80 °C), especially demonstrating excellent alkaline stability with only 16% degradation (2 M NaOH for 2200 h). In water electrolysis, the "microgap" between the membrane and catalyst layer (solid-solid interface) is alleviated, and the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) interfacial compatibility (liquid-solid-solid interface) is enhanced. The CM PBP-SH-Zr4 showed the lowest charge transfer resistance (Rct, 0.037 Ω cm2) and a high current density of 2.5 A cm-2 at 2.2 V, while the voltage drop was 0.361 mV h-1 after 360 h of endurance (six start-stop cycles) at 60 °C and 500 mA cm-2, proving a good water electrolysis durability. Moreover, an acceptable peak power density of 0.464 W cm-2 at 80 °C is achieved in a H2/O2 fuel cell with a PBP-SH-Zr4-AEM. Therefore, the IOC strategy can enhance the membrane's comprehensive performance and interface compatibility of MEA and may promote the development of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) for water electrolysis and fuel cells.

Investigating Electrode-Ionomer Interface Phenomena for Electrochemical Energy Applications

The endeavor to develop high-performance electrochemical energy applications has underscored the growing importance of comprehending the intricate dynamics within an electrode's structure and their influence on overall performance. This review investigates the complexities of electrode-ionomer interactions, which play a critical role in optimizing electrochemical reactions. Our examination encompasses both microscopic and meso/macro scale functions of ionomers at the electrode-ionomer interface, providing a thorough analysis of how these interactions can either enhance or impede surface reactions. Furthermore, this review explores the broader-scale implications of ionomer distribution within porous electrodes, taking into account factors like ionomer types, electrode ink formulation, and carbon support interactions. We also present and evaluate state-of-the-art techniques for investigating ionomer distribution, including electrochemical methods, imaging, modeling, and analytical techniques. Finally, the performance implications of these phenomena are discussed in the context of energy conversion devices. Through this comprehensive exploration of intricate interactions, this review contributes to the ongoing advancements in the field of energy research, ultimately facilitating the design and development of more efficient and sustainable energy devices.

Solvent Effects on the Catalyst Ink and Layer Microstructure for Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Understanding the complex solvent effects on the microstructures of ink and catalyst layer (CL) is crucial for the development of high-performance anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). Herein, we study the solvent effects within the binary solvent ink system composed of water, isopropyl alcohol (IPA), commercial anion exchange ionomer, and Pt/C catalyst. The results show that the Pt/C particles and ionomer tend to form large aggregates wrapped with a thick ionomer layer in IPA-rich ink and promote the formation of large mesopores within the CL. With the increase of the water content in the ink, Pt/C particles are more likely to bridge to each other through wrapped FAA to form a well-connected three-dimensional network. The CL fabricated using water-rich ink shows smaller pores, higher porosity, and a more homogeneous ionomer network without the formation of large aggregates. Based on these results, we propose that the properties of the solvent mixture, including dielectric constant (ε) and solubility parameter (δ), affect the coulomb interaction of charged particles and surface tension at interfaces, which in turn affects the microstructure of ink and CL. By leveraging the solvent effects, we optimize the CL microstructures and improve the performance of AEMFC. These results may guide the rational design and fabrication of AEMFCs.

Fabrication of Dual-Functional Bacterial-Cellulose-Based Composite Anion Exchange Membranes with High Dimensional Stability and Ionic Conductivity

Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are increasingly becoming a popular research area due to their ability to function with nonprecious metals in electrochemical devices. Nevertheless, there is a challenge to simultaneously optimize the dimensional stability and ionic conductivity of AEMs due to the "trade-off" effect. Herein, we adopted a novel strategy of combining filling and cross-linking using functionalized bacterial cellulose (PBC) as a dual-functional porous support and brominated poly(phenylene oxide) (Br-PPO) as the cross-linking agent and filler. The PBC nanofiber framework together with cross-linking can provide a reliable mechanical support for the subsequent filled polymer, thus improving the mechanical properties and effectively limiting the size change of the final quaternized-PPO (QPPO)-filled PBC composite membrane. The composite membrane showed a very low swelling ratio of only 10.35%, even at a high water uptake (81.83% at 20 °C). Moreover, the existence of multiple -NR3+ groups in the cross-link bonds between BC and Br-PPO can provide extra OH- ion transport sites, contributing to the increase in ionic conductivity. The final membrane demonstrated a hydroxide ion conductivity of 62.58 mS cm-1, which was remarkably higher than that of the pure QPPO membrane by up to 235.93% (80 °C). The successful preparation of the PBC3/QPPO membrane provides an effective avenue to tackle the trade-off effect through a dual-functional strategy.

Triptycene Branched Poly(aryl-co-aryl piperidinium) Electrolytes for Alkaline Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells and Water Electrolyzers

Alkaline polymer electrolytes (APEs) are essential materials for alkaline energy conversion devices such as anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) and water electrolyzers (AEMWEs). Here, we report a series of branched poly(aryl-co-aryl piperidinium) with different branching agents (triptycene: highly-rigid, three-dimensional structure; triphenylbenzene: planar, two-dimensional structure) for high-performance APEs. Among them, triptycene branched APEs showed excellent hydroxide conductivity (193.5 mS cm-1 @80 °C), alkaline stability, mechanical properties, and dimensional stability due to the formation of branched network structures, and increased free volume. AEMFCs based on triptycene-branched APEs reached promising peak power densities of 2.503 and 1.705 W cm-2 at 75/100 % and 30/30 % (anode/cathode) relative humidity, respectively. In addition, the fuel cells can run stably at a current density of 0.6 A cm-2 for 500 h with a low voltage decay rate of 46 μV h-1 . Importantly, the related AEMWE achieved unprecedented current densities of 16 A cm-2 and 14.17 A cm-2 (@2 V, 80 °C, 1 M NaOH) using precious and non-precious metal catalysts, respectively. Moreover, the AEMWE can be stably operated under 1.5 A cm-2 at 60 °C for 2000 h. The excellent results suggest that the triptycene-branched APEs are promising candidates for future AEMFC and AEMWE applications.

Recent Development of Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells and Performance Optimization Strategies: A Review

Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) are the most promising low-temperature fuel cells and have received extensive attention. Compared to PEMFCs, the cost per unit of power can be significantly reduced for AEMFCs because, in theory, they allow the usage of non-precious metal catalysts and low-cost cell components. Owing to the development of advanced materials and performance improvement strategies, AEMFCs have achieved new records in both initial performance and durability. However, the high performance currently achieved is contingent on certain conditions, e. g., high Pt loading, large gas flowrates, and operation in pure O2 , which are far from practical applications. Therefore, the transition to commercially relevant performance and durability is the next goal of AEMFCs. This paper reviews the performance data of H2 -fueled AEMFCs since 2010 and summarizes possible performance optimization schemes, which can provide useful insights for developing next-generation AEMFCs.

Manipulation of Cationic Group Density in Covalent Organic Framework Membranes for Efficient Anion Transport

Anion exchange membranes with high anion conductivity are highly desired for electrochemical applications. Increasing ion exchange capacity is a straightforward approach to enhancing anion conductivity but faces a challenge in dimensional stability. Herein, we report the design and preparation of three kinds of isoreticular covalent organic framework (COF) membranes bearing tunable quaternary ammonium group densities as anion conductors. Therein, the cationic groups are integrated into the backbones by flexible ether-bonded alkyl side chains. The highly quaternary ammonium-group-functionalized building units endow COF membranes with abundant cationic groups homogeneously distributed in the ordered channels. The flexible side chains alleviate electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance caused by large cationic groups, ensuring a tight interlayer stacking and multiple interactions. As a result, our COF membranes achieve a high ion exchange capacity and exceptional dimensional stability simultaneously. Furthermore, the effect of the ionic group density on the ion conductivity in rigid COF channels is systematically explored. Experiments and simulations reveal that the ionic group concentration and side chain mobility jointly determine the ion transport behavior, resulting in the abnormal phenomenon that the anion conductivity is not positively correlated to the ionic group density. The optimal COF membrane achieves the ever-reported highest hydroxide ion conductivity over 300 mS cm-1 at 80 °C and 100% RH. This study offers insightful guidelines on the rational design and preparation of high-performance anion conductors.

N-Methylquinuclidinium-Based Anion Exchange Membrane with Ultrahigh Alkaline Stability

Anion-exchange-membrane (AEM) water electrolysis is a promising technology for hydrogen production from renewable energy sources. However, the bottleneck of its development is the poor comprehensive performance of AEM, especially the stability at highly concentrated alkaline condition and temperature. Herein, a new cationic group N-methylquinuclidinium with enhanced alkaline stability is proposed and hereby a full-carbon chain poly(aryl quinuclidinium) AEM is prepared. Compared with reported AEMs, it shows ultrahigh comprehensive alkaline stability (no chemical decomposition, no decay of conductivity) in 10 m NaOH aqueous solution at 80 °C for more than 1800 h, excellent dimensional stability (swelling ratio: <10% in pure water, <2% in 10 m NaOH) in OH- form at 80 °C, high OH- conductivity (≈139.1 mS cm-1 at 80 °C), and high mechanical properties (tensile strength: 41.5 MPa, elongation at break: 50%). The water electrolyzer using the AEM exhibits a high current density (1.94 A cm-2 at 2.0 V) when assembled with nickel-alloy foam electrodes, and high durability when assembled with nickel foam electrodes.

Fluorinated poly(p-triphenyl piperidine) anion exchange membranes with robust dimensional stability for fuel cells

Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs), which are more economical than proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), stand out in the context of the rapid development of renewable energy. Superacid-catalyzed ether-free aromatic polymers have recently received a lot of attention due to their exceptional performance, but their development has been hampered by the trade-off between the dimensional stability and ionic conductivity of anion exchange membranes (AEMs). Here, we introduced fluoroketones containing different numbers of fluorinated groups (x = 0, 3 and 6) in the main chain of p-terphenyl piperidine because of the favorable hydrophobic properties of fluorinated groups. The results show that fluorinated AEMs can enhance OH- conductivity by building more aggregated hydrophilic channels while ensuring dimensional stability. The PTF6-QAPTP AEM with more fluorinated groups has the most excellent performance at 80 °C with an OH- conductivity of 142.7 mS cm-1 and a swelling ratio (SR) of only 4.55 %. Additionally, it exhibits good alkali durability, with the OH- conductivity and quaternary ammonium (QA) cation retaining at 93.45% and 92.6%, respectively, after immersion in a 2 M NaOH solution at 80 °C for 1200 h. In addition, the power density of the PTF6-QAPTP based single cell reaches 849 mW cm-2 when the current density is 1600 mA cm-2. The PTF6-QAPTP based cell has a voltage retention of 88% after 80 h of stability testing at a constant current density of 300 mA cm-2 at 80 °C.

Hydrocarbon Ionomeric Binders for Fuel Cells and Electrolyzers

Ionomeric binders in catalyst layers, abbreviated as ionomers, play an essential role in the performance of polymer-electrolyte membrane fuel cells and electrolyzers. Due to environmental issues associated with perfluoroalkyl substances, alternative hydrocarbon ionomers have drawn substantial attention over the past few years. This review surveys literature to discuss ionomer requirements for the electrodes of fuel cells and electrolyzers, highlighting design principles of hydrocarbon ionomers to guide the development of advanced hydrocarbon ionomers.

Vinyl-Addition Homopolymeization of Norbornenes with Bromoalkyl Groups

Vinyl-addition polynorbornenes are of great interest as versatile templates for the targeted design of polymer materials with desired properties. These polymers possess rigid and saturated backbones, which provide them with high thermal and chemical stability as well as high glass transition temperatures. Vinyl-addition polymers from norbornenes with bromoalkyl groups are widely used as precursors of anion exchange membranes; however, high-molecular-weight homopolymers from such monomers are often difficult to prepare. Herein, we report the systematic study of vinyl-addition polymerization of norbornenes with various bromoalkyl groups on Pd-catalysts bearing N-heterocyclic carbene ligands ((NHC)Pd-systems). Norbornenes with different lengths of hydrocarbon linker (one, two, and four CH2 groups) between the bicyclic norbornene moiety and the bromine atom were used as model monomers, while single- and three-component (NHC)Pd-systems were applied as catalysts. In vinyl-addition polymerization, the reactivity of the investigated monomers varied substantially. The relative reactivity of these monomers was assessed in copolymerization experiments, which showed that the closer the bromine is to the norbornene double-bond, the lower the monomer's reactivity. The most reactive monomer was the norbornene derivative with the largest substituent (with the longest linker). Tuning the catalyst's nature and the conditions of polymerization, we succeeded in synthesizing high-molecular-weight homopolymers from norbornenes with bromoalkyl groups (Mn up to 1.4 × 106). The basic physico-chemical properties of the prepared polymers were studied and considered together with the results of vinyl-addition polymerization.

Leafhopper-inspired reversibly switchable antireflection coating with sugar apple-like structure arrays

Optical coatings with reversibly tunable antireflective characteristics hold a tremendous potential for next generation optical energy-related applications. Bioinpsired by the camouflage behavior of small yellow leafhoppers, silica hollow sphere/shape memory polymer composites are self-assembled using a non-lithography-based approach. The average visible transmittance of the as-patterned hierarchical structure array-covered substrate is increased by ca. 6.3% at normal incident, and even improved by more than 20% for an incident angle of 75°. Interestingly, the broadband omnidirectional antireflection performance can be reversibly erased and recovered by applying external stimuli under ambient conditions. To gain a better understanding, its reversibility, mechanical robustness, and the structure-shape effect on the antireflective properties are systematically investigated in this research.

Novel side chain functionalized polystyrene/O-PBI blends with high alkaline stability for anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE)

We report the synthesis of a polystyrene-based anion exchange polymer bearing the cationic charge at a C6-spacer. The polymer is prepared by a functionalized monomer strategy. First, a copper halide catalyzed C-C coupling reaction between a styryl Grignard and 1,6-dibromohexane is applied, followed by quaternization with N-methylpiperidine and free radical polymerization. The novel polymer is blended with the polybenzimidazole O-PBI to yield mechanically stable blend membranes representing a new class of anion exchange membranes. In this regard, the ratio of the novel anion exchange polymer to O-PBI is varied to study the influence on water uptake and ionic conductivity. Blend membranes with IECs between 1.58 meq. OH- g-1 and 2.20 meq. OH- g-1 are prepared. The latter shows excellent performance in AEMWE, reaching 2.0 A cm-2 below 1.8 V in 1 M KOH at 70 °C, with a minor degradation rate from the start. The blend membranes show no conductivity loss after immersion in 1 M KOH at 85 °C for six weeks indicating high alkaline stability.

Durable Multiblock Poly(biphenyl alkylene) Anion Exchange Membranes with Microphase Separation for Hydrogen Energy Conversion

Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) and water electrolysis (AEMWE) show great application potential in the field of hydrogen energy conversion technology. However, scalable anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with desirable properties are still lacking, which greatly hampers the commercialization of this technology. Herein, we propose a series of novel multiblock AEMs based on ether-free poly(biphenyl ammonium-b-biphenyl phenyl)s (PBPA-b-BPPs) that are suitable for use in high performance AEMFC and AEMWE systems because of their well-formed microphase separation structures. The developed AEMs achieved outstanding OH- conductivity (162.2 mS cm-1 at 80 °C) with a low swelling ratio, good alkaline stability, and excellent mechanical durability (tensile strength >31 MPa and elongation at break >147 % after treatment in 2 M NaOH at 80 °C for 3750 h). A PBPA-b-BPP-based AEMFC demonstrated a remarkable peak power density of 2.41 W cm-2 and in situ durability for 330 h under 0.6 A cm-2 at 70 °C. An AEMWE device showed a promising performance (6.25 A cm-2 at 2 V, 80 °C) and outstanding in situ durability for 3250 h with a low voltage decay rate (<28 μV h-1 ). The newly developed PBPA-b-BPP AEMs thus show great application prospects for energy conversion devices.

PtNi/PtIn-Skin Fishbone-Like Nanowires Boost Alkaline Hydrogen Oxidation Catalysis

The development of high-performance platinum (Pt)-based electrocatalysts for the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is highly desirable for hydrogen fuel cells, but it is limited by the sluggish kinetics and severe carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in alkaline medium. Herein, we explore a class of facet-selected Pt-nickel-indium fishbone-like nanowires (PtNiIn FNWs) featuring high-index facets (HIFs) of Pt3In skin as efficient alkaline HOR catalysts. Impressively, the optimized Pt66Ni6In28 FNWs show the highest mass and specific activities of 4.02 A mgPt-1 and 6.56 mA cm-2, 2.0/2.1 and 13.9/15.6 times larger than those of commercial PtRu/C and commercial Pt/C, respectively, along with a competitive CO-tolerance ability. Specifically, they exhibit only 6.0% current density decay after 10000 s of operation and 25.7% activity loss after 2000 s in the presence of 1000 ppm of CO. Moreover, an isotope experiment and density functional theory (DFT) calculations further prove that the unique structure and synergy among Pt, Ni, and In endow these Pt66Ni6In28 FNWs with an optimized hydrogen binding energy (HBE) and an advantageous hydroxide binding energy (OHBE), giving them excellent alkaline HOR properties. The combined construction of surface-skin and HIFs in PtNiIn FNWs will offer an available method to realize the potential applications of advanced non-PtRu-based catalysts in fuel cells and beyond.

Effects of Iron Species on Low Temperature CO2 Electrolyzers

Electrochemical energy conversion devices are considered key in reducing CO2 emissions and significant efforts are being applied to accelerate device development. Unlike other technologies, low temperature electrolyzers have the ability to directly convert CO2 into a range of value-added chemicals. To make them commercially viable, however, device efficiency and durability must be increased. Although their design is similar to more mature water electrolyzers and fuel cells, new cell concepts and components are needed. Due to the complexity of the system, singular component optimization is common. As a result, the component interplay is often overlooked. The influence of Fe-species clearly shows that the cell must be considered holistically during optimization, to avoid future issues due to component interference or cross-contamination. Fe-impurities are ubiquitous, and their influence on single components is well-researched. The activity of non-noble anodes has been increased through the deliberate addition of iron. At the same time, however, Fe-species accelerate cathode and membrane degradation. Here, we interpret literature on single components to gain an understanding of how Fe-species influence low temperature CO2 electrolyzers holistically. The role of Fe-species serves to highlight the need for considerations regarding component interplay in general.

Semi-Interpenetrating Network Anion Exchange Membranes by Thiol-Ene Coupling Reaction for Alkaline Fuel Cells and Water Electrolyzers

In this work, a thiol-ene coupling reaction was employed to prepare the semi-interpenetrating polymer network AEMs. The obtained QP-1/2 membrane exhibits high hydroxide conductivity (162.5 mS cm^-1 at 80 °C) with a relatively lower swelling ratio, demonstrating its mechanical strength of 42 MPa. This membrane is noteworthy for its improved alkaline stability, as the semi-interpenetrating network effectively limits the attack of hydroxide. Even after being treated in 2 M NaOH at 80 °C for 600 h, 82.5% of the hydroxide conductivity is maintained. The H₂/O₂ fuel cell with QP-1/2 membrane displays a peak power density of 521 mW cm^-2. Alkaline water electrolyzers based on QP-1/2 membrane demonstrated a current density of 1460 mA cm^-2 at a cell voltage of 2.00 V using NiCoFe catalysts in the anode. All the results demonstrate that a semi-interpenetrating structure is a promising way to enhance the mechanical property, ionic conductivity, and alkaline stability of AEMs for the application of alkaline fuel cells and water electrolyzers.

Phosphonium-Based Polyelectrolytes: Preparation, Properties, and Usage in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Phosphorous is an essential element for the life of organisms, and phosphorus-based compounds have many uses in industry, such as flame retardancy reagents, ingredients in fertilizers, pyrotechnics, etc. Ionic liquids are salts with melting points lower than the boiling point of water. The term "polymerized ionic liquids" (PILs) refers to a class of polyelectrolytes that contain an ionic liquid (IL) species in each monomer repeating unit and are connected by a polymeric backbone to form macromolecular structures. PILs provide a new class of polymeric materials by combining some of the distinctive qualities of ILs in the polymer chain. Ionic liquids have been identified as attractive prospects for a variety of applications due to the high stability (thermal, chemical, and electrochemical) and high mobility of their ions, but their practical applicability is constrained because they lack the benefits of both liquids and solids, suffering from both leakage issues and excessive viscosity. PILs are garnering for developing non-volatile and non-flammable solid electrolytes. In this paper, we provide a brief review of phosphonium-based PILs, including their synthesis route, properties, advantages and drawbacks, and the comparison between nitrogen-based and phosphonium-based PILs. As phosphonium PILs can be used as polymer electrolytes in lithium-ion battery (LIB) applications, the conductivity and the thermo-mechanical properties are the most important features for this polymer electrolyte system. The chemical structure of phosphonium-based PILs that was reported in previous literature has been reviewed and summarized in this article. Generally, the phosphonium PILs that have more flexible backbones exhibit better conductivity values compared to the PILs that consist of a rigid backbone. At the end of this section, future directions for research regarding PILs are discussed, including the use of recyclable phosphorus from waste.

"Thiol-ene" crosslinked polybenzimidazoles anion exchange membrane with enhanced performance and durability

To address the "trade-off" between conductivity and stability of anion exchange membranes (AEMs), we developed a series of crosslinked AEMs by using polybenzimidazole with norbornene (cPBI-Nb) as backbone and the crosslinked structure was fabricated by adopting click chemical between thiol and vinyl-group. Meanwhile, the hydrophilic properties of the dithiol cross-linker were regulated to explore the effect for micro-phase separation morphology and hydroxide ion conductivity. As result, the AEMs with hydrophilic crosslinked structure (PcPBI-Nb-C2) not only had apparent micro-phase separation morphology and high OH^- conductivity of 105.54 mS/cm at 80 °C, but also exhibited improved mechanical properties, dimensional stability (swelling ratio < 15%) and chemical stability (90.22 % mass maintaining in Fenton's reagent at 80 °C for 24 h, 78.30 % conductivity keeping in 2 M NaOH at 80 °C for 2016 h). In addition, the anion exchange membranes water electrolysis (AEMWEs) using PcPBI-Nb-C2 as AEMs achieved the current density of 368 mA/cm² at 2.1 V and the durability over 500 min operated at 150 mA/cm² under 60 °C. Therefore, this work paves the way for constructing AEMs by introduction of norbornene into polybenzimidazole and formation of hydrophilic crosslinked structure based on "thiol-ene".

Pyrrolidinium-Based Hyperbranched Anion Exchange Membranes with Controllable Microphase Separated Morphology for Alkaline Fuel Cells

It is well acknowledged that the microphase-separated morphology of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) is of vital importance for membrane properties utilized in alkaline fuel cells. Herein, a rigid macromolecule poly(methyldiallylamine) (PMDA) is incorporated to regulate the microphase morphology of hyperbranched AEMs. As expected, the hyperbranched poly(vinylbenzyl chloride) (HB-PVBC) is guided to distribute along PMDA chains, and longer PMDA cha leads to a more distinct microphase morphology with interconnected ionic channels. Consequently, high chloride conductivity of 10.49 mS cm^-1 at 30 °C and suppressed water swelling ratio lower than 30% at 80 °C are obtained. Furthermore, the β-H of pyrrolidinium cations in the non-antiperiplanar position increases the energy barrier of β-H elimination, leading to conformationally disfavored Hofmann elimination and increased alkaline stability. This strategy is anticipated to provide a feasible way for preparing hyperbranched AEMs with clear microphase morphology and good overall properties for alkaline fuel cells.

Advances in Selective Electrochemical Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to Produce High-Value Chemicals

The conversion of biomass is a favorable alternative to the fossil energy route to solve the energy crisis and environmental pollution. As one of the most versatile platform compounds, 5-hydroxymethylfural (HMF) can be transformed to various value-added chemicals via electrolysis combining with renewable energy. Here, the recent advances in electrochemical oxidation of HMF, from reaction mechanism to reactor design are reviewed. First, the reaction mechanism and pathway are summarized systematically. Second, the parameters easy to be ignored are emphasized and discussed. Then, the electrocatalysts are reviewed comprehensively for different products and the reactors are introduced. Finally, future efforts on exploring reaction mechanism, electrocatalysts, and reactor are prospected. This review provides a deeper understanding of mechanism for electrochemical oxidation of HMF, the design of electrocatalyst and reactor, which is expected to promote the economical and efficient electrochemical conversion of biomass for industrial applications.

Alkaline Stability of Anion-Exchange Membranes

Recently, the development of durable anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) has increased in intensity due to their potential to use low-cost, sustainable components. However, the decomposition of the quaternary ammonium (QA) cationic groups in the anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) during cell operation is still a major challenge. Many different QA types and functionalized polymers have been proposed that achieve high AEM stabilities in strongly alkaline aqueous solutions. We previously developed an ex situ technique to measure AEM alkaline stabilities in an environment that simulates the low-hydration conditions in an operating AEMFC. However, this method required the AEMs to be soluble in DMSO solvent, so decomposition could be monitored using ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). We now report the extension of this ex situ protocol to spectroscopically measure the alkaline stability of insoluble AEMs. The stability ofradiation-grafted (RG) poly(ethylene-co-tetrafluoroethylene)-(ETFE)-based poly(vinylbenzyltrimethylammonium) (ETFE-TMA) and poly(vinylbenzyltriethylammonium) (ETFE-TEA) AEMs were studied using Raman spectroscopy alongside changes in their true OH^- conductivities and ion-exchange capacities (IEC). A crosslinked polymer made from poly(styrene-co-vinylbenzyl chloride) random copolymer and N,N,N',N'-tetraethyl-1,3-propanediamine (TEPDA) was also studied. The results are consistent with our previous studies based on QA-type model small molecules and soluble poly(2,6-dimethylphenylene oxide) (PPO) polymers. Our work presents a reliable ex situ technique to measure the true alkaline stability of AEMs for fuel cells and water electrolyzers.

Fluorinated Poly(aryl piperidinium) Membranes for Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Anion-exchange-membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) are a cost-effective alternative to proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The development of high-performance and durable AEMFCs requires highly conductive and robust anion-exchange membranes (AEMs). However, AEMs generally exhibit a trade-off between conductivity and dimensional stability. Here, a fluorination strategy to create a phase-separated morphological structure in poly(aryl piperidinium) AEMs is reported. The highly hydrophobic perfluoroalkyl side chains augment phase separation to construct interconnected hydrophilic channels for anion transport. As a result, these fluorinated PAP (FPAP) AEMs simultaneously possess high conductivity (>150 mS cm^-1 at 80 °C) and high dimensional stability (swelling ratio <20% at 80 °C), excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength >80 MPa and elongation at break >40%) and chemical stability (>2000 h in 3 m KOH at 80 °C). AEMFCs with a non-precious Co-Mn spinel cathode using the present FPAP AEMs achieve an outstanding peak power density of 1.31 W cm^-2 . The AEMs remain stable over 500 h of fuel cell operation at a constant current density of 0.2 A cm^-2 .

Synthesis and Characterization of a Composite Anion Exchange Membrane for Water Electrolyzers (AEMWE)

Anion exchange membranes (AEM) have gained attention recently as a promising candidate for low-cost water electrolysis systems to produce hydrogen, linked with renewable energy resources as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. The development of potential materials for producing and analyzing AEM is an imperative step towards commercialization and plays a competitive role in the hydrogen production industry. In this article, we developed a composite anion exchange membrane prepared by activating a commercial support structure (Celgard^® 3401) with a commercially available functional group (Fumion^® FAA-3) through a phase-inversion process. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis demonstrated the phase-inversion procedure as an effective methodology. Furthermore, the cell performance test result (with Celgard/Fumion) was very promising and even better in comparison with a commercial membrane commonly applied in alkaline electrolysis (Fumasep). We also developed a testing procedure for membrane performance evaluation during electrolysis which is very critical considering the effect of CO₂ absorption on membrane conductivity.

Efficient Synthesis of High-Performance Anion Exchange Membranes by Applying Clickable Tetrakis(dialkylamino)phosphonium Cations

Tetrakis(dialkylamino)phosphonium (TKDAAP) compounds exhibit extraordinary base resistance, a prerequisite feature for high-performance anion exchange membranes (AEMs). It is, however, challenging to synthesize a TKDAAP compound with reactive functionality that can be used to link the cation to a polymer backbone. In this study, two TKDAAP compounds with alkyne functionality were synthesized and incorporated into an azide-modified SBS triblock copolymer backbone via Cu(I)-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) "click" chemistry. The properties of the resulting AEMs were characterized. It was found that (1) the triazole linker between the cation and the polymer backbone was stable under alkaline conditions; (2) varying the substituents of TKDAAP compounds could dramatically alter the stability; and (3) increasing the hydrophilicity of the AEM was an efficient way to enhance its ionic conductivity. Using clickable TKDAAP compounds makes it easy to combine various cations into polymer backbones with adjustable cation content, thus potentially leading to an efficient way to screen a wide variety of polyelectrolyte structures to identify the most promising candidates for high-performance AEMs.

Physically and Chemically Stable Anion Exchange Membranes with Hydrogen-Bond Induced Ion Conducting Channels

Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with desirable properties are the crucial components for numerous energy devices such as AEM fuel cells (AEMFCs), AEM water electrolyzers (AEMWEs), etc. However, the lack of suitable AEMs severely limits the performance of devices. Here, a series of physically and chemically stable AEMs have been prepared by the reaction between the alkyl bromine terminal ether-bond-free aryl backbone and the urea group-containing crosslinker. Morphology analyses confirm that the hydrogen bonding interaction between urea groups is capable of driving the ammonium cations to aggregate and further form continuous ion-conducting channels. Therefore, the resultant AEM demonstrates remarkable OH− conductivity (59.1 mS cm−1 at 30 °C and 122.9 mS cm−1 at 90 °C) despite a moderate IEC (1.77 mmol g−1). Simultaneously, due to the adoption of ether-bond-free aryl backbone and alkylene chain-modified trimethylammonium cation, the AEM possesses excellent alkaline stability (87.3% IEC retention after soaking in 1 M NaOH for 1080 h). Moreover, the prepared AEM shows desirable mechanical properties (tensile stress > 25 MPa) and dimensional stability (SR = 20.3% at 90 °C) contributed by the covalent-bond and hydrogen-bond crosslinking network structures. Moreover, the resulting AEM reaches a peak power density of 555 mW cm−2 in an alkaline H2/O2 single fuel cell at 70 °C without back pressure. This rational structural design presented here provides inspiration for the development of high-performance AEMs, which are crucial for membrane technologies.
