Application of posterior pelvic tilt taping for the treatment of chronic low back pain with sacroiliac joint dysfunction and increased sacral horizontal angle

Effect of taping on posture of thoracic region in patients with thoracic kyphosis using acceleration

BACKGROUND

In the working environment of modern society, a poor sitting posture for a prolonged time may lead to abnormal spinal alignment such as thoracic kyphosis (TK).

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of taping for posture correction of patients with TK, providing theoretical and empirical guidance for clinicians attempting to rectify TK posture.

METHODS

The study included 15 subjects aged 30-60 years, all with a TK angle of ⩾ 40∘. Subjects were required to ascend and descend a set of three steps (a low step, high step, and second low step) under three different conditions: without tape assistance, with taping assistance using 20% elongation, and with taping assistance using 40% elongation. A triaxial accelerometer was employed to measure and compare the anterior-posterior (AP), vertical (VT), and medial-lateral (MIL) movements of the thoracic vertebrae in the different conditions.

RESULTS

There were no significant differences in the MIL (P= 0.903) or AP (P= 0.114) movements between the no tape assistance and 20% elongation taping conditions. However, a significant difference was found in the VT movement (P= 0.017). Comparing the no assistance condition to the 40% elongation taping condition, no significant changes were noted in the MIL movement (P= 0.650), but significant differences were detected in both the VT (P= 0.003) and AP movements (P= 0.016). No significant differences were found in any of the three measurements between 20% and 40% elongation taping.

CONCLUSION

Taping serves as an effective method for immediately improving kyphotic posture. It corrects the position of the scapula and cervicothoracic line and exerts passive retraction on the relevant muscles, thus mitigating trunk imbalance.

The relationship between low back pain, pelvic tilt, and lumbar lordosis with urinary incontinence using the DIERS formetric 4D motion imaging system

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common public health problem and postural changes may be crucial in women presenting with UI. This study was aimed at evaluating the relationship between low back pain (LBP), pelvic tilt (PT), and lumbar lordosis (LL) in women with and without UI using the DIERS formetric 4D motion imaging system. To date no study has to our knowledge compared postural changes and LBP in women with UI using the DIERS 4D formetric system.

METHODS

This was a case-control study. We included 33 women with UI and 33 without incontinence. The severity of urogenital symptoms was assessed by the IIQ-7 (Incontinence Impact Score) and UDI-6 (Urogenital Distress Inventory), and disability owing to LBP was evaluated using the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Posture and movement assessment, LL angle, thoracic kyphosis, and PT assessment were performed with the DIERS Formetric 4D motion imaging system.

RESULTS

The LL angle and pelvic torsion degree were higher in the incontinence group than in the control group (53.9 ± 9.5° vs 48.18 ± 8.3°; p = 0.012, 3.9 ± 4.1 vs 2.03 ± 1.8 mm; p = 0.018 respectively). The LBP visual analog scale value was also significantly higher in the incontinence group (5.09 ± 2.3 vs 1.7 ± 1.8 respectively, p < 0.0001). The LL angle showed a positive correlation with pelvic obliquity, (r = 0.321, p < 0.01) and fleche lombaire (r = 0.472, p < 0.01) and a negative correlation with lumbar range of motion measurements. Pelvic obliquity correlated positively with pelvic torsion (r = 0.649, p < 0.01), LBP (r = 0.369, p < 0.01), and fleche lombaire (r = 0.269, p < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

Women with UI were more likely to have lumbopelvic sagittal alignment changes and a higher visual analog scale for LBP. These findings show the need for assessment of lumbopelvic posture in women with UI.

The Immediate Effects of Muscle Energy Technique in Chronic Low Back Pain Patients with Functional Leg Length Discrepancy: A Randomized and Placebo-Controlled Trial

This study was conducted to determine the effect of muscle energy technique (MET) on pelvic alignment, leg length, pain, and fatigue in chronic low back pain (CLBP) patients with leg length discrepancy (LLD). Forty-two CLBP patients with LLD volunteered to participate and were randomly assigned to the MET group (n = 21) and placebo group (n = 21). The intervention group performed three METs with 5 s of isometric contraction and 30 s of rest once, and the placebo group performed three times the placebo-MET, maintaining the same posture as the MET group without muscle isometric contraction. X-ray equipment, tape measure, and visual analog scale were used to evaluate pelvic alignment, leg length, pain, and fatigue before and after each intervention. In comparison pre- and postintervention, only the MET group showed significant changes in pelvic alignment, leg length, pain, and fatigue (p < 0.05). In comparison between groups, there were significant differences in all variables (pelvic alignment, leg length, pain, fatigue) (p < 0.05). The results of this study confirmed the therapeutic effect of MET for improving pelvic alignment, functional LLD, pain, and fatigue in CLBP patients with functional LLD. Future research is needed to evaluate the long-term effect on more chronic low back pain patients.

Effects of Pelvic Stabilization Training with Lateral and Posterior Tilt Taping on Pelvic Inclination, Muscle Strength, and Gait Function in Patients with Stroke: A Randomized Controlled Study

Background

This study was aimed at investigating the effect of pelvic tilt taping on muscle strength, pelvic inclination, and gait function in patients with stroke.

Methods

A total of 60 patients with stroke were included in our study and randomly divided into three groups: the posterior pelvic tilt taping (PPTT, n = 20), the lateral pelvic tilt taping (LPPP) with PPTT (LPPP+PPTT, n = 20), and the control (n = 20) groups. All participants performed pelvic stabilization exercises consisting of 6 movements: supine, side lying, quadruped, sitting, squatting, and standing (30 min/day, five days/week, for six weeks). PPTT to correct anterior pelvic tilt was applied to the LPTT+PPTT and PPTT groups, and lateral pelvic tilt taping was additionally applied to the LPTT+PPTT group. LPTT was performed to correct the pelvis tilted to the affected side, and PPTT was performed to correct the anterior pelvic tilt. The control group did not undergo taping. A hand-held dynamometer was used to measure the hip abductor muscle strength. In addition, a palpation meter and 10-meter walk test were used to assess pelvic inclination and gait function.

Results

Muscle strength was significantly stronger in the LPTT+PPTT group than in the other two groups (p = 0.01). The anterior pelvic tilt was significantly improved in the taping group compared to the control group (p < 0.001), and the lateral pelvic tilt was significantly improved in the LPTT+PPTT group compared to the other two groups (p < 0.001). Significantly greater improvements in gait speed were observed in the LPTT+PPTT group than in the other two groups (p = 0.02).

Conclusions

PPPT can significantly affect pelvic alignment and walking speed in patients with stroke, and the additional application of LPTT can further strengthen these effects. Therefore, we suggest using taping as an auxiliary therapeutic-intervention method in postural control training.

Kinesiotape effectiveness in mechanical low back pain: A randomized clinical trial

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is the most common musculoskeletal disorder work-related health problem in Europe, affecting millions of workers. It is estimated that 60–80% of the population will suffer at least one episode of mechanical LBP during their life. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the kinesiotape (KT) effectiveness in mechanical LBP. METHODS: This was a double blinded, randomized-controlled clinical trial. Twenty-eight nursing and cleaning auxiliaries from Salamanca received a manual therapy program and a bandage of KT or false kinesiotape (FKT). They received two sessions a week for three weeks and a follow-up one month after the last session. Pain, range of motion and function were measured at baseline, at the end of each session and a month after the last session. RESULTS: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders and LBP are responsible for a high prevalence of sick-leave and absenteeism. Manual therapy and KT has demonstrated to reduce pain and to increase range of motion and function being effective in this population. There are statistically significant results in both groups in all measurements for all variables. KT seems to be superior, however, both have a positive effect on LBP. Although benefits decrease, long-term treatments focusing on pain alleviation and functional recovery is needed to maintain the benefits achieved. CONCLUSION: KT was an effective complement for this treatment. Although both show improvements, KT is recommended. Future studies are needed to demonstrate KT properties, to establish a treatment protocol to prevent chronic LBP and to avoid sick leave and absenteeism.

Pregnancy-Associated Sacroiliitis following an Uncomplicated Pregnancy

Pregnancy-associated sacroiliitis is infrequent during the peripartum period. Although pregnancy-associated pyogenic sacroiliitis rarely occurs, it is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. A timely diagnosis of the disease is challenging due to its nonspecific clinical symptoms. We reviewed a case that experienced an acute illness during pregnancy. The illness was manifested by localized pain in the hips or buttocks, sacroiliac joint tenderness, and debilitating hip pain during ambulation. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed little joint involvement, and the patient was treated with antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and glucocorticoids. The patient responded well to the therapy with marked improvement in her ambulation. Septic sacroiliitis should be considered in peripartum patients presenting with increased inflammatory markers and severe localized pain. Medical management is usually curative and without an adverse effect on pregnancy. Although we could not perform a biopsy to verify the cause of the disease, the patient's excellent response to the treatment confirmed our diagnosis.

Effects of truncal taping on center of gravity sway: comparison of different trunk muscle masses

[Purpose] Taping is a therapeutic technique used to prevent and treat sporting injuries and other conditions. This study aimed to clarify how kinesio taping versus non-elastic taping of the trunk affects postural control. [Participants and Methods] Thirty-three healthy male participants were included in this study. Participants were assigned to low or high trunk skeletal muscle mass groups. Main outcomes of path length and area representing the center of gravity sway were measured using a Zebris FDM-S system in three conditions: control, kinesio taping, and non-elastic taping. Tapes were applied to the rectus abdominis, external oblique, and erector spinae muscles. The measured limb position was seated on a balance cushion. [Results] The area of the low trunk mass group differed significantly between kinesio and non-elastic taping. However, the path length of the low trunk mass group and path length and area of participants with high trunk mass did not differ significantly between groups. [Conclusion] This study's findings indicated that two types of taping methods affected the area of gravitational sway in healthy adult males with a low trunk muscle mass.

Manipulative therapy of sacral torsion versus myofascial release in patients clinically diagnosed posterior pelvic pain: a consort compliant randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND CONTEXT

Chronic low back pain represents a health care problem with substantial costs. It is generally accepted that approximately 10% to 25% of patients with persistent chronic low back pain may have pain arising from the sacroiliac joints.

PURPOSE

This study aimed to analyze the effects of manipulative therapy of sacral torsion versus myofascial release on disability, pain intensity, and mobility in patients with chronic low back pain and sacroiliac joints.

STUDY DESIGN/SETTING

A prospective, single-blinded randomized clinical trial.

PATIENT SAMPLE

Sixty-four patients (mean±SD age: 51±9; 60% female) with chronic low back pain and sacroiliac joints comprised the patient sample. No participant withdrew because of adverse effects.

OUTCOME MEASURES

Self-reported disability (primary), pain intensity, scale of kinesiophobia, quality of life, isometric endurance of trunk flexor muscles, and lumbar mobility in flexion were assessed at baseline, pos-treatment, and one month follow-up.

METHODS

Participants were randomly assigned to a sacral torsion manipulation group or myofascial release group, receiving a total of 12 sessions (once weekly).

RESULTS

ANCOVA did not showed a statistically significant difference between groups for disability (95% CI -2.40-1.90, p=.177). Effect sizes were large in both groups at both follow-up periods. Similar results were achieved for all secondary outcomes (p˂. 05). The linear model longitudinal analyses showed significant improvements in both groups over time for all outcomes with the exception of fear of movement (manipulative: Minimum within-groups change score 1.91, p˂.001; myofascial: 1.66, p˂.001).

CONCLUSION

Manipulative and myofascial release therapy in patients with clinically diagnosed sacroiliac joints syndrome resulted in a similar short-term benefits on patient reported disability. Both groups experienced similar decrease in the intensity of pain over time, although no clinically meaningful effects were demonstrated in either group.

Effect of Posterior Pelvic Tilt Taping on Pelvic Inclination, Muscle Strength, and Gait Ability in Stroke Patients: A Randomized Controlled Study

OBJECTIVE

Pelvic alignment asymmetry in stroke patients negatively affects postural control ability. This study aimed to investigate the effect of posterior pelvic tilt taping on pelvic inclination, muscle strength, and gait ability in stroke patients.

METHODS

Forty stroke patients were recruited and randomly divided into the following two groups: the posterior pelvic tilt taping (PPTT) group (n = 20) and the control group (n = 20). All participants underwent sitting-to-standing, indoor walking, and stair walking training (30 min per day, 5 days per week, for 6 weeks). The PPTT group applied posterior pelvic tilt taping during the training period, while the control group did not receive a tape intervention. Pelvic inclination was measured using a palpation meter (PALM). A hand-held dynamometer and the 10-meter walk test were used to measure muscle strength and gait ability.

RESULTS

Significantly greater improvements in the pelvic anterior tilt were observed in the PPTT group than in the control group (p < 0.05). Muscle strength in the PPTT group was significantly increased compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Significantly greater improvements in gait speed were observed in the PPTT group than the control group.

CONCLUSIONS

According to our results, posterior pelvic tilt taping may be used to improve the anterior pelvic inclination, muscle strength, and gait ability in stroke patients.

The effect of sacroiliac chiropractic adjustments on innominate angles

Aim

The aim of this study was to determine whether or not a measurable change in the angle of the innominate bone could be identified after a chiropractic sacroiliac adjustment using a 'PALM PALpation Meter'. Secondly, if a change in the angle of the innominate bone was identified, what was the degree of change in the angle of the innominate bone, induced by the sacroiliac joint (SIJ) adjustment.

Method

This was a true experimental study that consisted of 100 participants who met the inclusion criteria. The participants were randomly allocated to either the treatment or control group. Each group had 50 participants: 25 females and 25 males. Informed consent was obtained from participants prior to commencement of treatment. The treatment group received a chiropractic adjustment based on their specific SIJ dysfunction. The control group was treated with detuned ultrasound therapy (sham treatment).

Procedure

Treatment consisted of a once-off treatment. The angles of the innominate bones were measured bilaterally pre- and post-treatment in both groups. Objective data were collected using the PALM PALpation Meter. Once the dysfunctional SIJ was identified, participants in group 1 were treated with specific chiropractic adjustment techniques based on the restriction. Group 2 participants were treated with detuned ultrasound only.

Results

The results of this study showed that a specific chiropractic adjustment resulted in a measurable change in the angle of the innominate bone (p ≤ 0.001). The change in angle was evident bilaterally; however, the side that was adjusted shows the greatest degree of change. The mean change in angle for the treatment group was 2.25° on the side of dysfunction.

Conclusion

The results of this study showed that a specific chiropractic adjustment can have a positive effect on the angles of the innominate bone, resulting in the tilt of the pelvis levelling into what is considered to be its correct anatomical alignment.

Effect of Posterior Pelvic Tilt Taping on Abdominal Muscle Thickness and Lumbar Lordosis in Individuals With Chronic Low Back Pain and Hyperlordosis: A Single-Group, Repeated-Measures Trial

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of posterior pelvic tilt taping (PPTT) on lumbar lordosis, pain, disability, and abdominal muscle thickness in individuals with nonspecific chronic low back pain with hyperlordosis.

METHODS

A prospective, single-group, repeated-measures design was conducted with 31 individuals with nonspecific chronic low back pain (16 men, 15 women) with hyperlordosis (mean ± SD = 59.3° ± 2.9°). Participants' mean age, pain, disability, and lumbar lordosis were, respectively, 35.7 ± 9.9 years, 5.1 ± 1.3, 26.8 ± 11.5, and 59.3° ± 2.9°. The thickness of the abdominal muscles on both sides was measured in the crook lying position by ultrasound imaging. PPTT was performed on both sides. Pain intensity, functional disability, lumbar lordosis angle, and abdominal muscle thickness were measured before PPTT (W0), 1 week after PPTT (W1), and 1 week after PPTT removal (W2).

RESULTS

Analysis revealed significant reductions in lumbar lordosis, pain, and disability, and increased abdominal muscle thickness, at W1 and W2 compared with W0 (P < .001). There were no significant differences in lumbar lordosis or abdominal muscle thickness between W1 and W2.

CONCLUSION

The current study showed in a small group of participants that 1 week of PPTT may improve lumbar lordosis, pain, disability, and abdominal muscle thickness in individuals with nonspecific chronic low back pain with hyperlordosis.

Effects of Kinesiology Taping on Shoulder Posture and Peak Torque in Junior Baseball Players with Rounded Shoulder Posture: A Pilot Study

Rounded shoulder posture (RSP) causes an imbalance of the adjacent joints due to the malalignment of the shoulder joint, and thus affects the strength of the muscles surrounding the shoulder. This study aimed to investigate the effect of rounded shoulder taping (RST) on shoulder posture and muscle strength in junior baseball players. Nineteen junior baseball players participated in the study, which used a crossover design at an interval of 1 week. The participants were randomized to receive rounded shoulder taping (RST) and sham kinesiology taping (SKT) using kinesiology tape. RSP was measured using two 12-inch combination squares, and shoulder peak torques were measured by isokinetic equipment. The results showed that RST led to significant changes in RSP (p < 0.05), but no significant changes were observed with SKT (p < 0.05). RST led to significant changes in the peak torques of external rotation and internal rotation of the shoulder (p < 0.05), but no significant changes were observed with SKT (p < 0.05). These results suggest that RST could help to correct RSP and improve peak torque of external and internal rotation of the shoulders of junior baseball players with RSP.

Effects of balance taping using kinesiology tape in a female with patellofemoral pain syndrome: A case report

BACKGROUND

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is one of the most common knee disorders affecting women.

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of balance taping on PFPS.

METHODS

Balance taping using kinesiology tape was applied for 2.5 months (average of 16 h/day) to both knees in a 26-year-old female nurse with bilateral PFPS.

RESULTS

The congruence angle decreased in the right and left knees from 30∘ to 5∘ and from 20∘ to 5∘, respectively. The Patient Specific Functional Scale score increased from 17/50 to 50/50, indicating improved functional state of the knees, while the Numeric Pain Rating Scale scores for from sitting to standing, from standing to sitting, and kneeling improved from 6/10 and 0/10, indicating no pain in the knee joints. Application of repeated balance taping for 2.5 months reduced PFPS.

CONCLUSION

Considering the outcome of the study, we recommend balance taping as a complementary treatment method for PFPS.

Immediate effects of ankle eversion taping on gait ability of chronic stroke patients

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this study is to assess the immediate effects of applying ankle eversion taping using kinesiology tape in patients with foot drop after stroke.

DESIGN

Randomized cross-over trial.

METHOD

In this study, fifteen subjects with stroke underwent three interventions in a random order. Subjects were randomly initially assigned to an ankle balance taping, placebo taping, and no taping each group. The ankle eversion taping was used for mechanical correction. Ankle eversion taping is involved in ankle dorsiflexion and eversion. The placebo taping began from both malleolus and was applied up to the middle point of the lower limb. Gait ability was assessed by the GAITRite System. The measured gait variables are gait velocity, step length, stride length, H-H base support, and cadence. All of the measurements were performed immediately after intervention.

RESULTS

Our results showed gait function in chronic stroke patients was improved after ankle eversion taping. Velocity, step length, stride length and cadence under the ankle eversion taping conditions significantly increased (p < 0.05) compared to the placebo and no taping conditions. Ankle eversion taping significantly reduced (p < 0.05) H-H base support compared to the no taping condition.

CONCLUSIONS

We conclude that the application of ankle eversion taping that uses kinesiology tape instantly increased the gait ability of chronic stroke patients with foot drop. However, more research is necessary to identify the long-term effects of the ankle eversion taping.

Effect of repeated application of rigid tape on pain and mobility deficits associated with sacroiliac joint dysfunction

BACKGROUND

Sacroiliac joint dysfunction (SIJD) accounts for up to 30% of patients with low back pain. Rigid taping techniques are often used for conservative treatment of SIJD related symptoms; however, its effectiveness has not been systematically evaluated.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of rigid tape on pain, malalignment and mobility deficits associated with anterior innominate SIJD.

METHODS

Two groups (n= 37; experimental and control) diagnosed with SIJD participated in a randomized, controlled trial. Tape was applied for 2 weeks in the experimental group, whereas the control group received no treatment. 2 × 2 (group × time) GLM-MANOVA assessed effects of tape on pain; innominate rotation; and hip rotation range of motion. Chi-square and McNemar tests assessed the effect of tape on Gillet and Sitting forward flexion mobility tests; the Patrick, Posterior shear and Gaenslen pain provocation tests were used to test pain. Variables were assessed before (PRE) and after (POST) two weeks.

RESULTS

No group differences were observed for any variable PRE. Pain intensity, innominate rotation (p< 0.05) and number of positive mobility and pain provocation tests (p< 0.05) decreased from PRE versus POST in the experimental group. No differences were observed in the control group.

CONCLUSION

Two weeks of rigid tape for anterior innominate correction successfully reduced symptoms related to SIJD.

A Short Overview of the Effects of Kinesio Taping for Postural Spine Curvature Disorders

Spine curvature disorders are very common in the population. Several therapeutic methods have been implemented over time. Kinesio Taping (KT) is a solution that is utilized for several purposes. This narrative review aims to discuss KT methodology as a valid solution for spinal curvature disorders, especially for structured and non-structured spine deviations. The matter is poorly discussed in the current literature. Nevertheless, KT seems to indirectly influence posture and spine curvature disorders through peripheral and central nervous system stimulation, but further investigations are needed to demonstrate these unknown effects clearly. The present review provides a valuable contribution to the existing literature and may represent a starting point and a useful guide for further studies in this field of research.

Repositioning the scapula with taping following distal radius fracture: Kinematic analysis using 3-dimensional motion system

STUDY DESIGN

Cross-sectional and controlled laboratory study using pretest-posttest design.

INTRODUCTION

Patients with distal radius fracture (DRfx) report proximal segment problems. Taping is commonly recommended because it provides improved posture and function.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

This study aimed to investigate the 3-dimensional scapular kinematics and the effect of taping on the kinematics in participants with DRfx.

METHODS

Twenty participants with a unilateral history of DRfx and 20 healthy controls participated. Scapular kinematics was assessed using an electromagnetic system. Three separate strips of elastic taping were applied for participants with DRfx over the arm, scapula, and middle and lower trapezius muscles through the paravertebral muscles. Afterward, the scapular kinematics was reassessed in taped condition.

RESULTS

When participants with DRfx and healthy controls compared, the scapula was more downwardly rotated at 120° of humerothoracic elevation (mean difference [MD], 9.06°) and at 120° (MD, 9.04°), 90° (MD, 5.6°) of humerothoracic lowering, more upwardly rotated at 30° of humerothoracic lowering (MD, 5.1°). Taping showed a significant effect on kinematics; specifically, the scapula was more externally rotated (38.9° untaped vs 31.1° taped) and posteriorly tilted (-9.2° untaped vs -4.8° taped) during humerothoracic elevation and lowering for participants with DRfx.

DISCUSSION

Participants with DRfx showed different scapular kinematics and taping resulted in changes on tested kinematic parameters during humeral movements. Differences in scapular motion during elevation with taping showed a specific pattern.

CONCLUSIONS

Overall, taping maintained a position likely to produce optimal rotator cuff function during early rehabilitation of patients with DRfx.

Effect of balance taping using kinesiology tape for a hamstring muscle injury and traumatic knee pain in an amateur university football player: A case report

RATIONALE

Football players are at high risk for lower extremity injuries because they turn on an axis of rotation, turn while decelerating, and repeatedly jump and land. One of the most common sites of injury is the knee.

PATIENT CONCERNS

A 25-year-old amateur university football player with pain in the knee medial area (Visual Analog Scale [VAS] score of 6/10), a hamstring muscle injury (VAS of 5/10), and a Tegner Activity Scale level of 3.

DIAGNOSES

He was diagnosed as hamstring muscle injury and traumatic knee pain.

INTERVENTIONS

Balance taping was used for 1.5 months (average, 16 h/d).

OUTCOMES

The Tegner Activity Scale level increased from 3 to 9 after balance taping, indicating increased activity ability. VAS scores for pain in the medial area of the knee and hamstring muscle during knee flexion decreased from 6 and 5 to 0 and 0, respectively. Based on these improvements, the patient was able to resume playing.

LESSONS

Balance taping is an effective treatment for football players with a hamstring muscle injury and traumatic knee pain.

Effect of kinesiology tape application direction on quadriceps strength

BACKGROUND

Controversy exists regarding whether the kinesiology tape application direction affects muscle strength.

METHODS

Eighteen healthy volunteers (12 men, 6 women) participated. Kinesiology tape was randomly applied to the quadriceps muscles either from origin to insertion or from insertion to origin. A Biodex isokinetic dynamometer was used to measure the peak torque of the quadriceps pre-and post-taping.

RESULTS

There was a significant difference in muscle strength after taping, regardless of the kinesiology tape application direction. There were no significant differences in the peak torque of the quadriceps between the 2 kinesiology tape application directions.

CONCLUSIONS

The application of kinesiology tape application to the rectus femoris, vastus medialis, and vastus lateralis of the quadriceps increased the muscle torque, regardless of the tape application direction. Therefore, to enhance quadriceps strength, we recommend the application of kinesiology tape to 3 of the muscles of the quadriceps (specifically, the rectus femoris, vastus medialis and vastus lateralis), irrespective of the tape application direction.

Kinesio Taping effects with different directions and tensions on strength and range of movement of the knee: a randomized controlled trial

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the Kinesio Taping effects with different directions and tensions on the strength of rectus femoris and range of movement of the knee in healthy individuals, but with a muscle imbalance caused by exposure to a continuous vibration.

METHODS

This is a randomized controlled trial. The subjects were randomly allocated into two groups: Group application of the Kinesio Taping using origin to insertion and Group application of the Kinesio Taping using insertion to origin. In both groups the dominant limb received the application of Kinesio Taping on rectus femoris (experimental limb) while the non-dominant limb was used as control of the study (control limb). Three assessments were carried out with each subject at different time-points (baseline, post-application, 24h later). These evaluations were performed with 0%, 10% and 75% of tension. The continuous vibration was conducted on the patella tendon for 20min before the first evaluation on each subject. A handheld dynamometer and a digital goniometer were used to evaluate the strength of the rectus femoris and the range of movement of the knee.

RESULTS

The sample consisted of 42 subjects, 79% women and 21% men, mean age 20.5 (SD=4.6), body mass index average of 18.7 (SD=2.34). There were no between-group differences for all outcomes.

CONCLUSION

This study suggests that the use of Kinesio Taping in healthy individuals did not change muscle strength or increase range of movement. Future clinical trials are recommended for symptomatic patients.

Kinesio taping does not alter muscle torque, muscle activity or jumping performance in professional soccer players: A randomized, placebo-controlled, blind, clinical trial

INTRODUCTION

Kinesio taping consists of the attachment of a thin elastic tape over specific muscles, the thickness of which is similar to that of the epidermis.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of Kinesio taping and placebo taping on muscle torque, muscle activity and jumping performance soccer players.

METHODS

Thirty athletes were randomly allocated to two groups (Group A: Kinesio taping and Group B: placebo taping). The participants were instructed to perform the Hop test's and were submitted to an isokinetic evaluation of the knee extensors as well as an electromyographic evaluation of the retus femoris muscle of the dominant lower limb. Next, Kinesio taping was performed for the activation of the rectus femoris muscle in Group A and placebo taping was performed in Group B. The participants were reevaluated 30 minutes after taping and 24 hours after the first evaluation using the same tests. Intra-group and inter-group comparisons were made considering the three evaluation times.

RESULTS

No statistically significant differences were found between groups at any evaluation time regarding the Hop test's, root mean square of the electromyographic signal or peak torque of the knee extensors of the dominant lower limb (p>0.05).

CONCLUSION

Kinesio taping for the activation of the rectus femoris muscle has no effect on peak muscle torque, muscle activity or jumping performance among soccer players.

Is application of Kinesio tape to treat hyperlordosis more effective on abdominal muscles or hamstrings?

Background

Hyperlordosis is defined as an abnormal increase in the lumbar arch of >40°. This study compared two taping techniques include abdominal muscles and hamstrings taping for the treatment of lumbar hyperlordosis.

Materials and Methods

The randomized clinical trial was performed in Shiraz, Iran, during June and September 2014. Thirty women aged 20-45 years old with at least 40° lumbar lordosis participated. The women were randomized into two groups (n = 15). Abdominal muscles taping was performed for the first group, whereas the other group underwent hamstrings taping with 30% tension. Lumbar lordosis was measured before, immediately after, and 24 h after taping. The two-way repeated measures analysis of variance was used to compare the two groups for lumbar lordosis angle.

Results

No significant differences were detected between the lumbar lordosis angles before and immediately after taping in the two groups (P > 0.05). However, a significant reduction was observed in lordosis angle in the abdominal group and the hamstring group 24 h after taping relative to before intervention (P < 0.01).

Conclusion

Taping of the abdominal and hamstring muscles was not effective immediately, whereas it decreased lordosis after 24 h.

The effectiveness of physiotherapy interventions for sacroiliac joint dysfunction: a systematic review

[Purpose] The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of physical therapy interventions in the treatment of sacroiliac joint dysfunction (SIJD). [Subjects and Methods] MEDLINE, PUBMED, CINAHL, AMED, PEDro, and CIRRIE databases were searched and only relevant data from studies that matched the inclusion criteria were included. CASP tools for critical appraisal were used to assess the quality of studies included. [Results] Nine articles met the inclusion criteria, of which, three examined the effect of exercise on SIJD, three used kinesio tape and four studies examined the effect of manipulation. Various outcomes were used including the visual analogue pain scale (VAS), Oswestry disability questionnaire (ODQ), numerical pain rating scale (NPRS) and pelvic position measurement (PALM, pelvimeter and photogrammetry). The quality of included studies ranged from low to average as the CASP tools revealed several limitations that affect the validity of the studies. The results showed that physiotherapy interventions are effective in reducing pain and disability associated with SIJD, with manipulation being the most effective approach and most commonly used within physical therapy clinics. [Conclusion] Manipulation, exercise and kinesio tape are effective in the treatment of pain, disability and pelvic asymmetry in SIJD.

Short term effects of kinesio taping on pain and functional disability in young females with menstrual low back pain: A randomised control trial study

BACKGROUND

Menstrual low back pain (LBP) in young females can reduce daily activity and cause functional disability, while the progressive application of kinesio-taping (KT) on pain reduction and functional correction has been stated.

OBJECTIVE

This study has been designed to investigate the efficacy of the lumbar vertebral column KT in young female with menstrual LBP.

METHODS

Thirty-two young females with menstrual LBP participated in this crossover study and were assigned randomly in two separate groups. The first group received KT during their first menstrual cycle and No-KT in their next menstrual, while the other group had no KT during the first mentrual cycle and received KT during the next menstrual cycle. The primary outcome measurements included the visual analogue scale (VAS) of pain, Oswestry disability index and McGill pain questionnaire score which were planned to collect at the end of the third day of the menstrual cycle.

RESULTS

Comparing pain and disability between two conditions, of menstrual cycle with KT and menstrual cycle without KT, revealed significant reduction in VAS (mean change = 1.7; 95%CI = 0.6 to 2.8; P= 0.005), McGill pain score (mean change = 20.1; 95%CI = 8.7 to 31.3; P= 0.001) and functional disability (mean change = 12.3; 95%CI = 7.2 to 17.5; P< 0.0001) by using KT during menstrual cycle.

CONCLUSIONS

Results showed that KT may effectively reduce pain and disability. The findings may support the clinical application of kinesiotaping in young females with menstrual LBP.

Effects of balance taping using kinesiology tape in a patient with moderate hallux valgus: A case report

BACKGROUND

Hallux valgus, an increased angle of lateral deviation in the big toe, can cause pain and difficulties in balancing and walking. This study aimed to investigate the effects of balance taping using elastic therapeutic tape on moderate hallux valgus.

METHODS

When she walked with shoes, she complained of pain over the medial eminence of the hallux metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint. Balance taping using kinesiology tape was applied for 3 months (average, 16hours/d) to both big toes of a 26-year-old woman with moderate hallux valgus.

RESULTS

On the right side, the hallux valgus angle (HVA) decreased from 21° to 14° and the intermetatarsal angle (IMA) decreased from 15° to 14.5°. On the left side, the HVA decreased from 22° to 11° and the IMA decreased from 15° to 12°. Furthermore, the patient was able to walk long distances in shoes without pain in the medial eminence of the hallux metatarsophalangeal joint.

CONCLUSION

This study suggested that repeated balance taping with kinesiology tape could be used as a complementary treatment method for moderate hallux valgus.

The effects of trunk kinesio taping on balance ability and gait function in stroke patients

[Purpose] Kinesio taping is a therapeutic method used in the treatment of various musculoskeletal and neuromuscular deficits, but there is limited evidence of the effects of trunk kinesio taping in neurologic patients. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effects of trunk kinesio taping on balance ability and gait function in persons after a stroke. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty-five post-stroke patients were included in this study. Kinesio tape was applied to four trunk muscles. Before and after the taping, in all subjects, the balance ability was measured using the Wii Balance Board, and gait function was assessed using the GAITRite system. [Results] The difference in gait function before and after trunk taping was not statistically significant. However, a variability of balance ability showed statistically significant differences. [Conclusion] These results suggest that taping may be a helpful method during rehabilitation programs for stroke patients. Its application to the trunk muscles is especially useful for improving balance ability.

Effect of Kinesio Taping on Pain and Functional Disability in Chronic Nonspecific Low Back Pain: A Randomized Clinical Trial

STUDY DESIGN

A randomized controlled trial with 2-week Kinesio taping intervention.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of Kinesio taping application on pain, functional disability, and trunk flexion range of motion (ROM) in patients with chronic nonspecific low back pain (chronic NSLBP).

SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA

Kinesio taping is a therapeutic tool used for treatment of chronic NSLBP. However, there is little scientific evidence that describes its clinical efficacy.

METHODS

Forty-four patients with chronic NSLBP were randomized into experimental group (n = 21) and placebo group (n = 23). The experimental group was treated with Erector Spinae Taping, whereas the placebo group was treated with placebo taping. The primary endpoint was pain intensity on visual analog scale. Secondary endpoints were functional disability on Arabic version of Oswestry disability index (ODI) and trunk flexion ROM on Modified Schober's test. All measurements were recorded at baseline (W0), after 2-week intervention (W2), and at 4-week (W4) follow-up.

RESULTS

Both group were comparable at baseline (P > 0.05). The experimental group had a greater decrease in pain than the placebo group after W2 of intervention (mean between-group difference 2.05 cm, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.38-2.71 points). This was maintained to W4 follow-up (2.25 cm, 95% CI = 1.67-2.82 points). At W2, the experimental group had significantly greater improvement in disability, by 3.90 points (95% CI = 1.68-8.54 points). This effect was significant at W4 follow-up (5.6, 95% CI = 2.65-8.54 points). Similarly trunk flexion ROM was significantly better at W2 (-0.71 cm, 95% CI = -0.85 to -0.56) and W4 follow-up (-0.73 cm, 95% CI = -0.88 to -0.58).

CONCLUSION

Kinesio taping reduces pain and disability and improves trunk flexion ROM after 2 weeks of application. However, thesis effects were very small to be considered clinically relevant and meaningful when compared with placebo taping.

The effect of Kinesio taping application for acute non-specific low back pain: a randomized controlled clinical trial

Objective:

To investigate the effect of Kinesio taping application in acute non-specific low back pain.

Design:

A randomized controlled clinical trial.

Setting:

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinic.

Participants:

A total of 109 patients with acute low back pain were randomized into either Kinesio taping ( n = 54) or control ( n = 55) groups.

Intervention:

The intervention group was treated with information and reassurance plus Kinesio taping, while the control group received merely information and reassurance. All participants were allowed to use as-needed doses of paracetamol. Kinesio tape was applied to the most painful area of the low back for a total of 12 days.

Main outcome measures:

Worst pain and disability were assessed at baseline, after the 12-day intervention, and at four weeks follow-up. During the first 12 days, participants filled in a pain diary consisting of a numeric rating scale and recorded the number of paracetamol tablets consumed daily. Disability was assessed with the Oswestry Disability Index.

Results:

After 12 days of intervention, pain intensity and the Oswestry Disability Index improved significantly in both groups; the improvements were significantly superior in the Kinesio taping group ( p = 0.003, p = 0.011). The Kinesio taping group reached pain control earlier (sixth day vs. 12th day) and consumed less paracetamol. At the fourth week, although pain intensity was significantly more reduced in the Kinesio taping group ( p = 0.015), there were no differences with regard to disability.

Conclusions:

Kinesio taping provided significant improvements in pain and disability; thus, it can be used as a complementary method in acute non-specific low back pain.

Effects of humeral head compression taping on the isokinetic strength of the shoulder external rotator muscle in patients with rotator cuff tendinitis

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of humeral head compression taping (HHCT) on the strength of the shoulder external rotator muscle in patients with rotator cuff tendinitis. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty patients with rotator cuff tendinitis were recruited. The shoulder external rotator strength was measured using a Biodex isokinetic dynamometer system. A paired t-test was performed to evaluate within-group differences in the strength of the shoulder external rotator muscle. [Results] Significantly higher shoulder external rotator peak torque and peak torque per body weight were found in the HHCT condition than in the no-taping condition. [Conclusion] HHCT may effectively increase the shoulder external rotator muscle strength in patients with rotator cuff tendinitis.

Effects of scapula-upward taping using kinesiology tape in a patient with shoulder pain caused by scapular downward rotation

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of scapula-upward taping (SUT) in a patient with shoulder pain caused by scapular downward rotation (SDR). [Subject] A 26-year-old male with SDR experienced severe pain in the left shoulder when he lifted his left upper extremity to hold the handle in a bus and during and after push-up exercise. [Methods] The patient underwent SUT for a period of 1 month, 5 times per week, for an average of 9 h/d. [Results] The patient's radiographs showed that the degree of SDR had decreased; the left shoulder pain also decreased in the resting state and during and after push-up exercise. The manual muscle strength test grades of the upper trapezius, lower trapezius, and serratus anterior had increased. The patient was able to lift the left upper extremity to hold the handle in a bus and perform the push-up exercise without experiencing any pain. [Conclusion] Repeated SUT application may be a beneficial treatment method for alleviating the degree of SDR and shoulder pain in SDR patients.

Characterization of individuals with sacroiliac joint bridging in a skeletal population: analysis of degenerative changes in spinal vertebrae

The aim of this study was to characterize the individuals with sacroiliac joint bridging (SIB) by analyzing the degenerative changes in their whole vertebral column and comparing them with the controls. A total of 291 modern Japanese male skeletons, with an average age at death of 60.8 years, were examined macroscopically. They were divided into two groups: individuals with SIB and those without bridging (Non-SIB). The degenerative changes in their whole vertebral column were evaluated, and marginal osteophyte scores (MOS) of the vertebral bodies and degenerative joint scores in zygapophyseal joints were calculated. SIB was recognized in 30 individuals from a total of 291 males (10.3%). The average of age at death in SIB group was significantly higher than that in Non-SIB group. The values of MOS in the thoracic spines, particularly in the anterior part of the vertebral bodies, were consecutively higher in SIB group than in Non-SIB group. Incidence of fused vertebral bodies intervertebral levels was obviously higher in SIB group than in Non-SIB group. SIB and marginal osteophyte formation in vertebral bodies could coexist in a skeletal population of men. Some systemic factors might act on these degenerative changes simultaneously both in sacroiliac joint and in vertebral column.

The mechanical effect of kinesiology tape on rounded shoulder posture in seated male workers: a single-blinded randomized controlled pilot study

STUDY DESIGN

Single-blinded randomized controlled pilot study.

OBJECTIVES

To examine the changes in pectoralis minor length (PML), the supine measurement of rounded shoulder posture (RSP), and the total scapular distance (TSD) in seated male workers with RSP, after rounded-shoulder-taping (RST) using kinesiology tape with (experimental taping) and without stretch (placebo taping).

BACKGROUND

RSP, a postural impairment, is a known cause of upper quarter pain.

METHODS

Fourteen men with RSP, who worked for at least 7 h/d in a seated position, were selected for RST, with the shoulders randomly assigned to two kinesiology taping methods: (1) with 35-40% stretch of its original length; and (2) without stretch. The PML, supine measurements of RSP, and TSD, before and after kinesiology taping, with and without stretch, were assessed.

RESULTS

Kinesiology taping with stretch significantly increased the PML and significantly decreased the supine measurement of RSP and TSD; kinesiology taping without stretch did not increase the PML significantly and did not decrease the supine measurement of RSP and TSD.

CONCLUSION

RST using kinesiology tape with stretch produces immediate mechanical correction of RSP in seated male workers.

Effect of posterior pelvic tilt taping in women with sacroiliac joint pain during active straight leg raising who habitually wore high-heeled shoes: a preliminary study

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to assess whether a 1-day application of posterior pelvic tilt taping (PPTT) using a kinesiology tape would decrease anterior pelvic tilt and active straight leg raising test scores in women with sacroiliac joint who habitually wore high-heeled shoes.

METHODS

Sixteen women (mean age, 23.63 ± 3.18 years) were enrolled in this study. Anterior pelvic tilt was measured using a palpation meter before PPTT application, immediately after PPTT application, 1 day after PPTT application, and immediately after PPTT removal after 1 day of application. Active straight leg raising scores were measured at the same periods. Posterior pelvic tilt taping was applied in the target position (posterior pelvic tilt position).

RESULTS

The anterior pelvic tilt was decreased during and after 1 day of PPTT application (before and after kinesiology tape removal) compared with the initial angle (all P < .05). Active straight leg raising scores were decreased during and 1 day after PPTT application (before and after kinesiology tape removal) compared with the initial score (all P < .05).

CONCLUSION

The results of this preliminary study suggests that PPTT may temporarily decrease anterior pelvic tilt and active straight leg raising score in women with sacroiliac joint pain who habitually wear high-heeled shoes.

COMPARISON BETWEEN KINESIO TAPING AND PHYSIOTHERAPY IN THE TREATMENT OF de QUERVAIN'S DISEASE

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of a therapeutic Kinesio taping (KT) and physical therapy (PT) modalities for the treatment of de Quervain's disease. Methods: In this prospective randomized clinical study, 30 patients were enrolled into the KT group, and 30 other patients were enrolled into the physical therapy group. In the KT group, 3 pieces of Kinesio tapes were used 4 times weekly, and in the PT group 10 min paraffin bath, 5 min ultrasound (US) under water, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), and a friction massage were applied every 3 days for 10 sessions. Pain severity and the presence of swelling were assessed in all patients before and after the course of 1-month treatment. Results: The overall success rate was 80% in the KT group and 30% in the PT group. In the KT group, the baseline visual analog scale (VAS) was 58 and at the end of treatment it changed into 13. In the PT group, these figures were 56 and 38. Swelling was improved in 17 people (73%) and 5 people (19%) in the KT and PT groups, respectively. Conclusion: Results revealed that patients with de Quervain's disease respond more favorably to KT rather than PT.

The effects of kinesio taping on potential in chronic low back pain patients anticipatory postural control and cerebral cortex

[Purpose] This study aimed to examine the effects of kinesio tape applied to chronic low back pain (CLBP) patients on anticipatory postural control and cerebral cortex potential. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty patients whose low back pain had continued for more than 12 weeks were selected and assigned to a control group (n=10) to which ordinary physical therapy was applied and an experimental group (n=10) to which kinesio tape was applied. Anticipatory postural control was evaluated using electromyography, and movement-related cortical potential (MRCP) was assessed using electroencephalography. Clinical evaluation was performed using a visual analogue scale and the Oswestry disability index. [Results] According to the analysis results for anticipatory postural control, there were significant decreases in the transversus abdominis (TrA) muscle and the external oblique muscle in both groups. Among them, the TrA of the experimental group exhibited the greatest differences. According to the results of a between-group comparison, there was significant difference in the TrA between the two groups. There was also a significant decrease in the MRCP of both groups. In particular, changes in the movement monitoring potential (MMP) of the experimental group were greatest at Fz, C3, Cz, and C4. According to the between-group comparison, there were significant differences in MMP at F3, C3, and Cz. Both groups saw VAS and ODI significantly decrease. Among them, the ODI of the experimental group underwent the greatest change. [Conclusion] Kinesio tape applied to CLBP patients reduced their pain and positively affected their anticipatory postural control and MRCP.
