Abstract
A fluorescent and colorimetric poly (acrylamide)-based copolymer probe P(AAm-co-RBNCH) has been designed via free radical polymerization of a commercial acrylamide monomer with a rhodamine-functionalized monomer RBNCH. Metal ion selectivity of RBNCH was investigated by fluorescence and colorimetric spectrophotometry. Upon addition of Fe3+, a visual color change from colorless to red and a large fluorescence enhancement were observed for the ring-opening of the rhodamine spirolactam mechanism. The monomer gives a sensitive method for quantitatively detecting Fe3+ in the linear range of 100-200 μM, with a limit of detection as low as 27 nM and exhibiting high selectivity for Fe3+ over 12 other metal ions. The hydrogel sensor was characterized by FTIR, and the effects of RBNCH amount on gel content and swelling properties were explored. According to the recipe of 1.0 mol% RBNCH to the total monomers, the fabricated hydrogel sensor displayed a good swelling property and reversibility performance and has potential for application in the imaging of Fe3+ level in industrial wastewater.

Abstract
A novel lysosome-targeting PEGylated polyester-based fluorescent pH nanosensor is fabricated by the combination of ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP), side-group modification and subsequent self-assembly. First, a key target amphiphilic copolymer carrier for rhodamine (Rh) pH indicator is synthesized in a facile manner by the ROCOP of phthalic anhydride with allyl glycidyl ether using mPEG-OH and t-BuP1/Et3B as the macroinitiator and binary catalyst, respectively. Subsequently, Rh moieties are covalently attached on the polymer chain with controllable grafting degree via an efficient thiol-ene click reaction. Concurrently, the effect of catalyst systems and reaction conditions on the catalytic copolymerization performance is presented, and the quantitative introduction of Rh is described in detail. Owing to its amphiphilic characteristics, the rhodamine-functionalized polyester-based block copolymer can self-assemble into micelles. With the covalent incorporation of Rh moieties, the as-formed micelles exhibit excellent absorption and fluorescence-responsive sensitivity and selectivity towards H+ in the presence of various metal cations. Moreover, the as-prepared micelles with favorable water dispersibility, good pH sensitivity and excellent biocompatibility also display appreciable cell-membrane permeability, staining ability and pH detection capability for lysosomes in living cells. This work provides a new strategy for the facile synthesis of novel biocompatible polymeric fluorescent pH nanosensors for the fluorescence imaging of lysosomal pH changes.

Abstract
We describe the development of a polymeric vesicle that not only selectively fluoresces at low pH, a condition prevailing in cancer cells, but also can potentially monitor the thermoresponsive release of a drug even if the drug is nonfluorescent. The developed fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based thermoresponsive vesicular nanocarriers are composed of a new poly(PEGMA)-b-poly(NIPA-r-R6GMED) block copolymer, which undergoes pH-switchable superior turn on-off fluorescence characteristics. The block copolymer was synthesized using the RAFT technique, and its solution properties and self-assembly behavior were investigated by turbidity measurements, fluorescence spectroscopy, 1H NMR, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. The block copolymer self-assembled to form nanostructured vesicles above the critical aggregation temperature under physiologically relevant conditions. Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy were utilized to study the FRET process between encapsulated hydrophobic guest C-153 (donor) and polymer-bound R6GMED units (acceptor) in the thermoresponsive vesicles. The FRET rate and efficiency were found to vary as a result of the pH-dependent changes in the quantum yield of the acceptor molecules. The occurrence of a highly efficient FRET in this polymeric vesicular nanocarrier at acidic pH, a condition similar to the cytoplasm and cell nucleus in leukemic tissues, and the ability to encapsulate hydrophilic and hydrophobic molecules and their temperature-controlled release make it potentially useful in imaging guided real-time monitoring of drug-delivery vehicles.

Abstract
A strip of tethered rhodamine carbon nanodots (C-dots) was designed for selective detection of Al(3+) ion using a Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based ratiometric sensing mechanism. The probe consisted of rhodamine B moieties immobilized on the surface of water-soluble C-dots. Upon exposure to Al(3+), the rhodamine moieties showed a much enhanced emission intensity via energy transfer from the C-dots under excitation at their absorption wavelength. The detection mechanism was related to the Al(3+)-induced ring-opening of rhodamine on C-dots through the chelation of the rhodamine 6G moiety with Al(3+), leading to a spectral overlap of the absorption of C-dots (donor) and the emission of ring-opened rhodamine (acceptor). In addition, a paper-based sensor strip containing the tethered rhodamine C-dots was prepared for practical, versatile applications of Al(3+) sensing. The paper-based sensor could detect Al(3+) over other metal ions efficiently, even from a mixture of metal ions, with increased emission intensity at long-wavelength emission via FRET. Sensing based on FRET of C-dots is color-tunable, can be recognized with a naked eye, and may provide a new platform for specific metal-ion sensing.

Abstract
The novel water-soluble poly(vinyl alcohol) with pendant rhodamine B moiety as colorimetric and fluorescene chemosensor for Hg(2+) ions was prepared by grafting poly(vinyl alcohol) using rhodamine B hydrazide and hexamethylenediisocyanate as fluorescent dye and coupling agent, respectively. Because of their good water-solubility, the polymers binding rhodamine B can be used as chemosensors in aqueous media. With the addition of Hg(2+) ions into the aqueous solution, visual color changes and fluorescence enhancements were detected. In addition, we also noticed that other metal ions such as Ag(+), Cd(2+), Co(2+), Cu(2+), K(+), Mg(2+), Ba(2+), Fe(2+), Ni(2+), Pb(2+), Cr(3+), Fe(3+) and Zn(2+) cannot induce obvious changes to the fluorescence spectra of the polymer chemosensors. The combination of water solubility and positive fluorescence response as well as color change are hence particularly promising for the practical utility of the sensors.
