Dynamics of chloroacetanilide herbicides in various types of mesocosm wetlands

Transformation and degradation of tebuconazole and its metabolites in constructed wetlands with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi colonization

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonization has been used in constructed wetlands (CWs) to enhance treatment performance. However, its role in azole (fungicide) degradation and microbial community changes is not well understood. This study aims to explore the impact of AMF on the degradation of tebuconazole and its metabolites in CWs. Total organic carbon levels were consistently higher with the colonization of AMF (AMF+; 9.63- 16.37 mg/L) compared to without the colonization of AMF (AMF-; 8.79-14.48 mg/L) in CWs. Notably, tebuconazole removal was swift, occurring within one day in both treatments (p = 0.885), with removal efficiencies ranging from 94.10 % to 97.83 %. That's primarily due to rapid substrate absorption at the beginning, while degradation follows with a longer time. Four metabolites were reported in CWs first time: tebuconazole hydroxy, tebuconazole lactone, tebuconazole carboxy acid, and tebuconazole dechloro. AMF decreased the abundance of tebuconazole dechloro in the liquid phase, suggesting an inhibitory effect of AMF on dechlorination processes. Furthermore, tebuconazole carboxy acid and hydroxy were predominantly found in plant roots, with a higher abundance observed in AMF+ treatments. Metagenomic analysis highlighted an increasing abundance in bacterial community structure in favor of beneficial microorganisms (xanthomonadales, xanthomonadaceae, and lysobacter), along with a notable presence of functional genes like codA, NAD, and deaD in AMF+ treatments. These findings highlight the positive influence of AMF on tebuconazole stress resilience, microbial community modification, and the enhancement of bioremediation capabilities in CWs.

Oxidation of metazachlor herbicide by ozone in the gas and aqueous phases: mechanistic, kinetics, and ecotoxicity studies

The atmospheric and aqueous ozonolysis of metazachlor (MTZ) is investigated using high-level quantum chemical and kinetic calculations (M06-2X/6-311 +  + G(3df,3pd)//M06-2X/6-31 + G(d,p) level of theory). The ozone (O3)-initiated degradation pathways of MTZ under three different mechanisms, namely cycloaddition, oxygen-addition, and single electron transfer (SET), are explored in the temperature range of 283-333 K and 1 atm pressure. As a result, the cycloaddition reaction at the C16C18 double bond of the benzene ring of MTZ is found to be the most dominant channel in the atmosphere with the standard Gibbs free energy of reaction (ΔrG0g) of - 129.13 kJ mol-1 and the highest branching ratio of 95.18%. In the aqueous phase, the main reaction channel turns into the SET mechanism, which owns the lowest Gibbs free energy of activation (ΔG#aq) of 73.8 kJ mol-1 and contributes 87.8% to the ktotal. Over the temperature range of 283-333 K, the total rate constant (ktotal) significantly increases from 8.42 to 5.82 × 101 M-1 s-1 in the atmosphere and from 4.10 × 102 to 2.40 × 104 M-1 s-1 in the aqueous environment. Remarkably, the ecotoxicity assessment shows that MTZ may be harmful to fish and chronically harmful to daphnia. In contrast, its main ozonolysis products exhibit no acute or chronic toxicity or mutagenic effects.

Removal, transformation and ecological risk assessment of pesticide in rural wastewater by field-scale horizontal flow constructed wetlands of treated effluent

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are widely used in sewage treatment in rural areas, but there are only a few studies on field-scale CWs in treating wastewater-borne pesticides. In this study, the treatment and metabolic transformation of 29 pesticides in rural domestic sewage by 10 field-scale horizontal flow CWs (HF-CWs), each with a treatment scale of 36‒5000 m3/d and operated for 2‒10 years, in Guangzhou, Southern China was investigated. The risk of pesticides in treated effluent and main factors influencing such risk were evaluated. Results demonstrated that HF-CWs could remove pesticides in sewage and reduce their ecological risk in effluent, but the degree varied among types of pesticides. Herbicides had the highest mean removal rate (67.35 %) followed by insecticides (60.13 %), and the least was fungicides (53.22 %). In terms of single pesticide compounds, the mean removal rate of butachlor was the highest (73.32 %), then acetochlor (69.41 %), atrazine (68.28 %), metolachlor (58.40 %), and oxadixyl (53.28 %). The overall removal rates of targeted pesticides in each HF-CWs ranged from 11 %‒57 %, excluding two HF-CWs showing increases in pesticides in treated effluent. Residues of malathion, phorate, and endosulfan in effluent had high-risks (RQ > 5). The pesticide concentration in effluent was mainly affected by that in influent (P = 0.042), and source control was the key to reducing risk. The main metabolic pathways of pesticide in HF-CWs were oxidation, with hydroxyl group to carbonyl group or to form sulfones, the second pathways by hydrolysis, aerobic condition was conducive to the transformation of pesticides. Sulfones were generally more toxic than the metabolites produced by hydrolytic pathways. The present study provides a reference on pesticides for the purification performance improvement, long-term maintenance, and practical sustainable application of field-scale HF-CWs.

The Behavior of Terbuthylazine, Tebuconazole, and Alachlor during Denitrification Process

Pesticide compounds can influence denitrification processes in groundwater in many ways. This study observed behavior of three selected pesticides under denitrifying conditions. Alachlor, terbuthylazine, and tebuconazole, in a concentration of 0.1 mL L-1, were examined using two laboratory denitrifications assays: a "short" 7-day and a "long" 28-day test. During these tests, removal of pesticides via adsorption and biotic decomposition, as well as the efficiency of nitrate removal in the presence of the pesticides, were measured. No considerable inhibition of the denitrification process was observed for any of the pesticides. On the contrary, significant stimulation was observed after 21 days for alachlor (49%) and after seven days for terbuthylazine (40%) and tebuconazole (36%). Adsorption was in progress only during the first seven days in the case of all tested pesticides and increased only negligibly afterwards. Immediate adsorption of terbuthylazine was probably influenced by the mercuric chloride inhibitor. A biotic loss of 4% was measured only in the case of alachlor.

Insights into the metabolic pathways and biodegradation mechanisms of chloroacetamide herbicides

Chloroacetamide herbicides are widely used around the world due to their high efficiency, resulting in increasing levels of their residues in the environment. Residual chloroacetamides and their metabolites have been frequently detected in soil, water and organisms and shown to have toxic effects on non-target organisms, posing a serious threat to the ecosystem. As such, rapid and efficient techniques that eliminate chloroacetamide residues from the ecosystem are urgently needed. Degradation of these herbicides in the environment mainly occurs through microbial metabolism. Microbial strains such as Acinetobacter baumannii DT, Bacillus altitudinis A16, Pseudomonas aeruginosa JD115, Sphingobium baderi DE-13, Catellibacterium caeni DCA-1, Stenotrophomonas acidaminiphila JS-1, Klebsiella variicola B2, and Paecilomyces marquandii can effectively degrade chloroacetamide herbicides. The degradation pathway of chloroacetamide herbicides in aerobic bacteria is mainly initiated by an N/C-dealkylation reaction, followed by aromatic ring hydroxylation and cleavage processes, whereas dechlorination is the initial reaction in anaerobic bacteria. The molecular mechanisms associated with bacterial degradation of chloroacetamide herbicides have been explored, with amidase, hydrolase, reductase, ferredoxin and cytochrome P450 oxygenase currently known to play a pivotal role in the catabolic pathways of chloroacetamides. The fungal pathway for the degradation of these herbicides is more complex with more diversified products, and the degradation enzymes and genes involved remain to be discovered. However, there are few reviews specifically summarizing the microbial degrading species and biochemical mechanisms of chloroacetamide herbicides. Here, we briefly summarize the latest progress resulting from research on microbial strain resources and enzymes involved in degradation of these herbicides and their corresponding genes. Furthermore, we explore the biochemical pathways and molecular mechanisms for biodegradation of chloroacetamide herbicides in depth, thereby providing a reference for further research on the bioremediation of such herbicides.

The Effect of Domestic Sewage Treatment on Islands Using Ecological Treatment Processes: A Case Study of Haimen Island, Fujian Province

Islands are characterized by a lack of land and freshwater resources, public finances, and technical personnel. As a result, domestic sewage may not be effectively treated, which can lead to major pollution on islands and in the surrounding sea areas. In this study, a pilot treatment of domestic sewage was conducted using an ecological treatment process (i.e., a constructed wetland and ecological pond) in an abandoned pond located on Haimen Island, Fujian Province, China. The pollutant indicators were monitored to analyze this treatment method at different treatment stages. The results showed that the combination of multiple ecological treatment processes had favorable treatment effects on various pollutants in the sewage. The treatment rates of the chemical oxygen demand (COD_Cr) and suspended solids (SS) surpassed 88%. The treatment rate of the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD₅), ammonia nitrogen (NH₃-N), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and fecal coliform surpassed 93%, and all the indicators met or were close to the level I B emission standards for urban sewage treatment plants. Different treatment stages have different treatment effects on different pollutants. The constructed wetland played an important role in sewage treatment through plant absorption, substrate adsorption, sedimentation, and microbial decomposition, particularly for the TP, COD_Cr, and BOD₅. In contrast, algal photosynthesis in the ecological pond produced a large amount of dissolved oxygen, and the treatment effect was highest for the TN and NH₃-N. The treatment effects on the fecal coliform in the constructed wetland and ecological pond were very significant. Ecological treatment processes based on the combination of a constructed wetland and ecological pond have favorable treatment effects, low construction and maintenance costs, and pollution-free conditions, which are suitable for application in island areas.

Enantioselectivity and mechanisms of chiral herbicide biodegradation in hydroponic systems

This study demonstrates the enantioselective removal dynamics and mechanisms of the chiral herbicide metolachlor in a hydroponic system of Phragmites australis. It presents the first work to elucidate plant-microbial driven enantioselective degradation processes of chiral chemicals. The results showed a degradation efficiency of up to 95.07 ± 2.81% in the hydroponic system driven by a notably high degradation rate constant of 0.086 d^-1. P. australis was demonstrated to rapidly increase the contribution of biodegradation pathways in the hydroponic system to 82.21 ± 4.81% within 4 d with an enantiomeric fraction (EF) drop to 0.26 ± 0.02 to favour the enantioselective degradation of S-Metolachlor (k_{S-Metolachlor} = 0.568 d^-1 and k_{R-Metolachlor} = 0.147 d^-1). Comparatively, the biodegradation pathways in the control constituted less than 25%, with an EF value of circa 0.5. However, the enantioselective biodegradation pathways exhibited complete reversal after about 4 d to favour R-Metolachlor. Plants promoted the degradation of R-Metolachlor, evidenced by an increase in EF to 0.59 ± 0.03. Nonetheless, metolachlor showed an inhibitory effect on plants reflected by the reduction of plant growth rate, chlorophyll content, and electron transport rate to -7.85 ± 1.52%, 1.33 ± 0.43 mg g^-1, 4.03 ± 1.33 μmol (m² s)^-1, respectively. However, rhizosphere microorganisms aided plants to catalyze excessive reactive oxygen species production by the antioxidant enzymes to protect plants from oxidative damage and restore their physiological activities. High-throughput analysis of microbial communities demonstrated the enrichment of Massilia (40.63%) and Pseudomonas (8.16%) in the initial stage to promote the rapid degradation of S-Metolachlor. By contrast, the proliferation of Brevundimonas (32.29%) and Pseudarthrobacter (11.03%) in the terminal stage was closely associated with the degradation of R-Metolachlor. Moreover, as symbiotic bacteria of plants, these bacteria aided plants protection from reactive oxygen damages and promoted the recovery of plant metabolic functions and photosynthesis. Overall, these results demonstrate biodegradation mediated by plant-microbe mechanisms as the main driver for the enantioselective degradation of metolachlor in hydroponic systems.

Gain and retain - On the efficiency of modified agricultural drainage ponds for pesticide retention

Drainage ponds have the potential to serve as long-term interface measures primarily for flood control, and mass retention. They are often considered as promising supplements for the mitigation of drainage pipe loads to improve the water quality in agricultural landscapes. In this study, a highly dynamic drainage pond system with non-steady inflows and groundwater interaction was modified and investigated regarding its potential for pesticide and transformation product (TP) retention. For this purpose, two 104-day monitoring campaigns were conducted before and after pond modification. Field experiments with fluorescent tracers, Uranine and Sulforhodamine-B, proved that structural modifications improved the hydraulic functionality of the ponds. The effective volume (Ɛ) increased from 20% to almost 100% in the modified pond and the mean hydraulic residence time (τ) was ten times longer. After a dry period, pesticide retention was high during slow refilling of the ponds, still TP loads posed a risk by infiltration into shallow groundwater due to the permeable ground. During wet periods, short nominal detention times together with high inflows led to rare high retention rates through peak attenuation. Moderate inflows resulted in extremely variable retention values, owing to the small pond storage capacity. Along with this, the total retention efficiency after modification reached up to 38% for mobile, 29% for sorptive pesticides, and 32% for mobile TPs. To achieve the best performances for ponds as natural landscape elements, they should be analysed for their hydrological functionality as a prerequisite and then modified for delayed pesticide and TP transport. Then, dynamic drainage ponds can utilize their full potential regarding mitigation of pesticide and TP loads in agricultural catchments.

Removal of Chloroacetanilide Herbicides from Water Using Heterogeneous Photocatalysis with TiO2/UV-A

Chloroacetanilide herbicides are widely used in the agricultural sector throughout the world. Because of their poor biodegradability, high water solubility, and long persistence, chloroacetanilide herbicides have a high potential to contaminate water, and conventional water treatment processes do not ensure sufficient removal. Therefore, heterogeneous photocatalysis using TiO2/UV-A was investigated for the degradation of alachlor, acetochlor, and metolachlor from water. Two commercially available TiO2 (P25 and AV-01) were used as photocatalysts. Different experimental setups were also tested. In addition, the toxicity of single herbicides and mixtures of their photocatalytic degradation products to the freshwater alga Chlorella kessleri was investigated via a growth inhibition test. The maximum removal efficiency for alachlor, acetochlor, and metolachlor was 97.5%, 93.1%, and 98.2%, respectively. No significant differences in the removal efficiency of chloroacetanilide herbicides were observed for the photocatalysts used. Although the concentrations of all herbicides during photocatalysis decreased, the toxicity of the resulting mixtures of degradation products increased or remained the same, indicating the formation of toxic degradation products.

Overarching issues on relevant pesticide transformation products in the aquatic environment: A review

The intensification of agricultural production during the last decades has forced the rapid increase in the use of pesticides that finally end up in the aquatic environment. Albeit well-documented, pesticides continue to raise researchers' attention, because of their potential adverse impacts on the environment and, inevitably, humans. Once entering the aquatic bodies, pesticides undergo biotic and abiotic processes, resulting in transformation products (TPs) that sometimes are even more toxic than the parent compounds. A substantial shift of the scientific interest in the TPs of pesticides has been observed since their environmental fate, occurrence and toxicity is still in its formative stage. In an ongoing effort to expand the existing knowledge on the topic, several interesting works have been performed mostly in European countries, such as France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Greece, and Spain that counts the highest number of relevant publications. Pesticide TPs have been also studied to a lesser extent in Asia, North and South America. To this end, the main objective of this review is to delineate the global occurrence, fate, toxicity as well as the analytical challenges related to pesticide TPs in surface, ground, and wastewaters, with the view to contribute to a better understanding of the environmental problems related with TPs formation. The concentration levels of the TPs, ranging from the low ng/L to high μg/L scale and distributed worldwide. Ultimately, an attempt to predict the acute and chronic toxicity of TPs has been carried out with the aid of an in-silico approach based on ECOSAR, revealing increased chronic toxicity for the majority of the identified TPs, despite the change they underwent, while a small portion of them presented serious acute toxicity values.

A Literature Review of Wetland Treatment Systems Used to Treat Runoff Mixtures Containing Antibiotics and Pesticides from Urban and Agricultural Landscapes

Wetland treatment systems are used extensively across the world to mitigate surface runoff. While wetland treatment for nitrogen mitigation has been comprehensively reviewed, the implications of common-use pesticides and antibiotics on nitrogen reduction remain relatively unreviewed. Therefore, this review seeks to comprehensively assess the removal of commonly used pesticides and antibiotics and their implications for nitrogen removal in wetland treatment systems receiving non-point source runoff from urban and agricultural landscapes. A total of 181 primary studies were identified spanning 37 countries. Most of the reviewed publications studied pesticides (n = 153) entering wetlands systems, while antibiotics (n = 29) had fewer publications. Even fewer publications reviewed the impact of influent mixtures on nitrogen removal processes in wetlands (n = 16). Removal efficiencies for antibiotics (35–100%), pesticides (−619–100%), and nitrate-nitrogen (−113–100%) varied widely across the studies, with pesticides and antibiotics impacting microbial communities, the presence and type of vegetation, timing, and hydrology in wetland ecosystems. However, implications for the nitrogen cycle were dependent on the specific emerging contaminant present. A significant knowledge gap remains in how wetland treatment systems are used to treat non-point source mixtures that contain nutrients, pesticides, and antibiotics, resulting in an unknown regarding nitrogen removal efficiency as runoff contaminant mixtures evolve.

UV and temperature effects on chloroacetanilide and triazine herbicides degradation and cytotoxicity

The purpose of this study was to explore the stability and toxicity of the herbicides and their degradation byproduct after exposure to different environmental factors. Triazines (atrazine, propazine, simazine) and chloroacetanilides (acetochlor, alachlor, metolachlor) which are commonly used herbicides were evaluated for cytotoxicity in different UV (254 nm and 365 nm) and temperature (4 °C, 23 °C, and 40 °C) conditions as well as degradation rates. Atrazine with the highest LD50 (4.23 μg mL-1) was less toxic than the other tested triazine herbicides Chloroacetanilides tested were more toxic than tested triazines, with LD50 0.08-1.42 μg mL-1 vs 1.44-4.23 μg mL-1, respectively. Alachlor with LD50 0.08 μg mL-1 showed the strongest toxic response as compared with other tested herbicides. Temperatures only did not alter cytotoxicity of the tested herbicides, except for acetochlor and alachlor showing about 45 % more cell death after exposure to 40 °C for 2 h. At all 3 tested temperatures, 2 h of UV treatments did not affect cytotoxic effects of the tested herbicides, except for acetochlor and alachlor. At 4 °C, acetochlor toxicity was attenuated about 63 % after UV 365 nm exposure; but alachlor toxicity was enhanced after either UV 254 or 365 nm exposure for about 40 % and 24 %, respectively. At 23 °C, acetochlor toxicity was enhanced about 35 % after UV 254 nm exposure, but attenuated about 48 % after UV 365 nm exposure. Alachlor toxicity was enhanced about 34 % after UV 254 nm and 23 °C exposure. In combination of UV 254 nm and 40 °C, acetochlor toxicity was lowered by 63 % and alachlor toxicity was no change as compared with 4 °C, no UV group. After co-treatment with UV 365 nm and 40 °C both acetochlor and alachlor toxicity was enhanced 55 % and 80 %, respectively. Through degradation analysis by LC-MS/MS, alachlor showed the most dramatic degradation (only 0.58 %-10.58 % remaining) after heat and UV treatments.

The role of two organic amendments to modify the environmental fate of S-metolachlor in agricultural soils

S-metolachlor is a widely used herbicide that may contaminate groundwater when applied to irrigated crops, especially when the soil has a low organic carbon (OC) content. The objective here was to assess the capacity of two organic wastes, namely, green compost (GC) and pelletised organo-mineral manure fertilizer (PM), applied to two soils (S) with different textures at a rate of 10% dry weight to modify the fate of S-metolachlor. The herbicide's Freundlich adsorption coefficient (Kf) increased within a range of 3.2-8.2 times in S + GC and 3.8-6.8 times in S + PM. A positive correlation between adsorption and OC and the coefficient of variation of the OC normalised adsorption coefficients (Kf_oc) higher than 20% indicated the evident influence on this process of soil OC content and its nature. The increase in adsorption did not prevent the dissipation of S-metolachlor in the amended soils, although the degradation rate decreased up to ~2 times or was not significantly modified across the different soil types. The S-metolachlor metabolites, metolachlor ethane sulfonic acid and metolachlor oxanilic acid, were detected in the herbicide's dissipation in the unamended soils, but they were not detected in the amended soils. The mobility experiments indicated leached amounts of S-metolachlor higher than 50% in unamended soil. The amounts decreased 1.1-1.7 times and 1.7-1.8 times in the S + GC and S + PM when a saturated flow was applied. Moreover, breakthrough curves indicated a slow leaching kinetics of herbicide in amended soils, with low concentrations continuously detected in the leachates together with a decrease in the maximum peak concentration. The results show the effect of the application of organic wastes especially in sandy soils to promote the immobilisation and/or degradation of S-metolachlor, avoiding its transfer to other environmental compartments.

Understanding the origins of herbicides metabolites in an agricultural watershed through their spatial and seasonal variations

The aim of this study is to understand the spatial and seasonal variations of persistent herbicides metabolites and to determine their origins in the Vilaine River watershed, Britany-France. Improving knowledge on herbicides metabolites sources and seasonality is important for drinking water resource management. Data were collected at 13 sampling stations during five sampling campaigns in 2016 and 2017. Relations between water quality parameters, herbicides and metabolites were analyzed using statistical methods. The influence of land use and wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) on streams water quality has been identified. Cluster Analysis revealed that two groups of sampling stations can be described as "urban" with stations downstream the urban area and as "agricultural" with stations located downstream of the watershed. Chloroacetamids metabolites have been associated together with nitrates and agricultural areas as could be expected. Thus, the drinking water treatment plant located in the estuary of the Vilaine River is exposed to high metolachlor ESA and nitrate loads all year long. Aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) is associated to anthropogenic urban contamination and nutrient loads. AMPA has its major sources in both glyphosate and phosphonate detergents issued from WWTP. This can help to adapt surface water treatment process and water management policies concerning herbicides metabolites.

Phytoextraction of diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl from the soil by green manure species

The herbicides diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl present a potential risk of environmental contamination and are widely used for weed control in sugarcane cultivation. Our objectives were to measure the tolerance of Canavalia ensiformes (L.) DC., Stilizobium aterrimum L., Raphanus sativus L., Crotalaria spectabilis Röth, Lupinus albus L., and Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br. To the herbicides diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl to assess the capacity of these species to extract and accumulate the herbicides in their tissues. Before sowing the green manure species, the soils were individually contaminated with the three ¹⁴C-radiolabeled herbicides. ¹⁴C-diuron and ¹⁴C-sulfometuron-methyl showed higher values remaining in the soil (>90%) for all species of green manure compared to hexazinone (<80%). The green manure species analyzed showed greater potential to remedy soils contaminated with hexazinone than the other herbicides. C. ensiformes showed high phytoextraction of hexazinone when compared to the other species, removing 11.2% of the pollutant from the soil, followed by L. albus (8.6%), S. aterrimum (7.3%), R. sativus (4.8%), C. spectabilis (2.5%), and P. glaucum (1.1%). The results indicate that the phytoextraction of diuron, hexazinone and sulfometuron-methyl is dependent on the species of green manure and can be an important tool for the decontamination of areas polluted by these herbicides.

Degradation studies of dimethachlor in soils and water by UHPLC-HRMS: putative elucidation of unknown metabolites

Degradation of dimethachlor was evaluated in soils and water, detecting metabolites in incurred samples. Putative elucidation was performed using HRMS and software tools, detecting new possible metabolites of dimethachlor.

Effects of metazachlor and its major metabolite metazachlor OA on early life stages of marbled crayfish

The effects of the herbicide metazachlor and its major metabolite metazachlor OA at two concentrations, including environmentally relevant concentrations of metazachlor (0.0115 µmol/l and 0.0790 µmol/l) and metazachlor OA (0.0117 µmol/l and 0.0805 µmol/l), respectively, were evaluated on early ontogeny, growth, behaviour, oxidative stress, antioxidant enzyme levels, histology, and mortality of marbled crayfish Procambarus virginalis. Both tested concentrations of metazachlor and metazachlor OA were associated with significantly lower growth and delayed ontogenetic development compared to controls. Exposure of metazachlor at 0.0115 µmol/l and metazachlor OA at 0.0117 µmol/l and 0.0805 µmol/l resulted in significantly lower activity of total superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione s-transferase (GST), glutathione reductase (GR), and reduced glutathione (GSH) compared with control and resulted in gill anomalies ranging from wall thinning to focal disintegration of branchial structure. Metazachlor at the environmentally relevant concentration of 0.0790 µmol/l was associated with significant alterations of crayfish distance moved and walking speed. The potential risk associated with metazachlor use in agriculture related to effects on non-target aquatic organisms.

Comprehensive evaluation of substrate materials for contaminants removal in constructed wetlands

Considerable number of studies have been carried out to develop and apply various substrate materials for constructed wetlands (CWs), however, there is a lack of method and model for comprehensive evaluation of different types of CWs substrates. To this end, this article summarized nearly all the substrate materials of CWs available in the literatures, including natural materials, agricultural/industrial wastes and artificial materials. The sources and physicochemical properties of various substrate materials, as well as their removal capacities for main water contaminants including nutrients, heavy metals, surfactants, pesticides/herbicides, emerging contaminants and fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) were comprehensively described. Further, a scoring model for the substrate evaluation was constructed based on likely cost, availability, permeability, reuse and contaminant removal capacities, which can be used to select the most suitable substrate material for different considerations. The provided information and constructed model contribute to better understanding of CWs substrate for readers, and help solve practical problems on substrates selection and CWs construction.

Effects of S-metolachlor and its degradation product metolachlor OA on marbled crayfish (Procambarus virginalis)

Increasing production of energy crops in Europe, mainly maize and rapeseed, has altered patterns of pesticide use in recent decades. The long-term effects of S-metolachlor (S-M) and of its metabolite metolachlor OA (M-OA) at the environmentally relevant concentration of 4.2 μg L^-1 and at 42 μg L^-1 (ten-fold concentration) on marbled crayfish (Procambarus virginalis) were evaluated in a 28-day exposure and after a subsequent 28-day recovery period. Indicators assessed were behaviour; biochemical haemolymph profile; oxidative and antioxidant parameters of gill, hepatopancreas, and muscle; and histology of hepatopancreas and gill. Results showed biochemical haemolymph profile (lactate, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, inorganic phosphate), lipid peroxidation in hepatopancreas, and antioxidant parameters (catalase, reduced glutathione, glutathione S-transferase) of hepatopancreas and gill of crayfish exposed to S-M and M-OA to significantly differ from controls (P < 0.01). Antioxidant biomarker levels remained different from controls after a 28-day recovery period. Differences in behaviour including speed of movement and velocity, and histopathological damage to gill and hepatopancreas were associated with S-M and M-OA exposure and persisted after 28 days in S-M- and M-OA-free water. Results suggest harmful effects of low concentrations of S-M and its metabolite M-OA on non-target organisms and provide information for assessing their effects at environmentally relevant concentrations.

Giving waterbodies the treatment they need: A critical review of the application of constructed floating wetlands

Water quality is declining worldwide and an increasing number of waterbodies lose their ecological function due to human population growth and climate change. Constructed floating wetlands (CFWs) are a promising ecological engineering tool for restoring waterbodies. The functionality of CFWs has been studied in-situ, in mesocosms and in the laboratory, but a systematic review of the success of in situ applications to improve ecosystem health is missing to date. This review summarises the pollutant dynamics in the presence of CFWs and quantifies removal efficiencies for major pollutants with a focus on in situ applications, including studies that have only been published in the Chinese scientific literature. We find that well designed CFWs successfully decrease pollutant concentrations and improve the health of the ecosystem, shown by lower algae biomass and more diverse fish, algae and invertebrate communities. However, simply extrapolating pollutant removal efficiencies from small-scale experiments will lead to overestimating the removal capacity of nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter of in situ applications. We show that predicted climate change and eutrophication scenarios will likely increase the efficiency rate of CFWs, mainly due to increased growth and pollutant uptake rates at higher temperatures. However, an increase in rainfall intensity could lead to a lower efficiency of CFWs due to shorter hydraulic retention times and more pollutants being present in the particulate, not the dissolved form. Finally, we develop a framework that will assist water resource managers to design CFWs for specific management purposes. Our review clearly highlights the need of more detailed in situ studies, particularly in terms of understanding the short- and long-term ecosystem response to CFWs under different climate change scenarios.

Dynamics of emerging organic contaminant removal in conventional and intensified subsurface flow treatment wetlands

Six pilot-scale treatment wetlands treating municipal wastewater were monitored for classical wastewater parameters and selected Emerging Organic Compounds (EOCs): caffeine (CAF), ibuprofen (IBU), naproxen (NPX), benzotriazole (BTZ), diclofenac (DCL), acesulfame (ACE) and carbamazepine (CBZ) on a weekly basis over the course of one year. Treatment efficacy of the wetland systems was compared to that of a municipal wastewater treatment plant adjacent to the research site (activated sludge technology). The aerated wetlands VAp and HAp, and the two-stage vertical flow system VGp + VSp showed the highest treatment efficacy (>70% removal on a mass basis) and comparable treatment efficacy to the conventional WWTP for removal of CAF, IBU, NPX, BTZ, and DCL. Annual mass removal of ACE in the WWTP was 50% and varied in the wetlands (depending on system design) from zero to 62%. On a mean monthly basis, ACE removal in the treatment wetlands VGp + VSp, VAp, HAp, R was high (> 90%) for six months of the year. Monthly mean mass removal of CBZ was negligible for the WWTP and all treatment wetland systems except H50p, which showed up to 49% mass removal in June. Monthly mean mass removals of classical wastewater parameters and readily biodegradable EOCs (represented by CAF, IBU, NPX) were most stable in the intensified wetland designs VAp, HAp, and R. A statistical analysis confirms that system complexity, aerobic conditions, and temperature have the highest correlation to overall pollutant removal in the treatment wetland systems, including EOCs of high to moderate biodegradability. First-order removal rate coefficents and temperature correction factors for EOCs are reported for the first time in the treatment wetland literature. Limitations on the use of these values in engineering design are discussed.

Degradation and Transport of the Chiral Herbicide S-Metolachlor at the Catchment Scale: Combining Observation Scales and Analytical Approaches

Evaluating pesticide degradation and transport in the soil-surface water continuum remains challenging at the catchment scale. Here we investigated the dissipation of the chiral herbicide S-metolachlor (SM) in soil in relation to its transport in runoff. Analyses of SM, transformation products (TPs, i.e., MESA and MOXA), and enantiomers were combined to determine SM degradation at plot and catchment scales. Assisted by modeling, we found that the main dissipation pathways of SM at the plot scale were degradation (71%), volatilization (5%), leaching (8%) and runoff (3%), while 13% of SM persisted in topsoil. This highlights the relevance of degradation processes. TPs could trace the different discharge contributions: MOXA prevailed in runoff water, whereas MESA was associated with slower flowpaths. At the catchment outlet, 11% of SM applied was exported in dissolved or particulate phases or as TPs (in SM mass equivalent). A single event 1 week after application exported 96% of SM, which underlined the potential importance of severe rainfall on seasonal SM export. Enantioselective degradation enriched SM in the R-enantiomer over longer periods and may be associated with slower flowpaths. Altogether, combining observation scales and analytical approaches enabled to quantify SM degradation and to identify how degradation controls SM export at the catchment scale.
