The geophysical toolbox applied to forest ecosystems - A review

Studying the forest subsurface is a challenge because of its heterogeneous nature and difficult access. Traditional approaches used by ecologists to characterize the subsurface have a low spatial representativity. This review article illustrates how geophysical techniques can and have been used to get new insights into forest ecology. Near-surface geophysics offers a wide range of methods to characterize the spatial and temporal variability of subsurface properties in a non-destructive and integrative way, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. These techniques can be used alone or combined to take advantage of their complementarity. Our review led us to define three topics how near-surface geophysics can support forest ecology studies: 1) detection of root systems, 2) monitoring of water quantity and dynamics, and 3) characterisation of spatial heterogeneity in subsurface properties at the stand level. The number of forest ecology studies using near-surface geophysics is increasing and this multidisciplinary approach opens new opportunities and perspectives for improving quantitative assessment of biophysical properties and exploring forest response to the environment and adaptation to climate change.

Patterns of deep fine root and water utilization amongst trees, shrubs and herbs in subtropical pine plantations with seasonal droughts

Introduction

Seasonal droughts will become more severe and frequent under the context of global climate change, this would result in significant variations in the root distribution and water utilization patterns of plants. However, research on the determining factors of deep fine root and water utilization is limited.

Methods

We measured the fine root biomass and water utilization of trees, shrubs and herbs, and soil properties, light transmission, and community structure parameters in subtropical pine plantations with seasonal droughts.

Results and Discussion

We found that the proportion of deep fine roots (below 1 m depth) is only 0.2-5.1%, but that of deep soil water utilization can reach 20.9-38.6% during the dry season. Trees improve deep soil water capture capacity by enhancing their dominance in occupying deep soil volume, and enhance their deep resource foraging by increasing their branching capacity of absorptive roots. Shrubs and herbs showed different strategies for deep water competition: shrubs tend to exhibit a "conservative" strategy and tend to increase individual competitiveness, while herbs exhibited an "opportunistic" strategy and tend to increase variety and quantity to adapt to competitions.

Conclusion

Our results improve our understanding of different deep fine root distribution and water use strategies between overstory trees and understory vegetations, and emphasize the importance of deep fine root in drought resistance as well as the roles of deep soil water utilization in shaping community assembly.

Using fixed-potential electrodes to quantify iron and manganese redox cycling in upland soils

Although metal redox reactions in soils can strongly affect carbon mineralization and other important soil processes, little is known about temporal variations in this redox cycling. Recently, potentiostatically poised electrodes (fixed-potential electrodes) have shown promise for measuring the rate of oxidation and reduction at a specific reduction potential in situ in riparian soils. Here for the first time, we used these electrodes in unsaturated soils to explore the fine-scale temporal redox fluctuations of both iron and manganese in response to environmental conditions. We used three-electrode systems with working electrodes fixed at 100 mV (vs. SHE) and 400 mV at 50 cm and 70 cm in the valley floor soil of a headwater watershed. Electrodes fixed at 100 mV to mimic iron oxides and at 400 mV to mimic manganese oxides allowed real-time reduction and oxidation rates to be calculated from temporal variations in the electric current. Electrode measurements were compared to soil porewater chemistry, pCO₂, pO₂, groundwater level, resistivity measurements, and precipitation. The fixed-potential electrodes recorded fluctuations over timescales from minutes to weeks. A consistently negative current was observed at 100 mV (interpreted as oxidation of Fe), while the 400-mV electrode fluctuated between negative and positive currents (Mn oxidation and reduction). When the water table rose above the electrodes, reduction was promoted, but above the water table, rainfall only stimulated oxidation. Precipitation frequency thus drove the multi-day reduction or oxidation events (return interval of 5-10 days). These measurements represent the first direct detections of frequency, period, and amplitude of oxidation and reduction events in unsaturated soils. Fixed-potential electrodes hold promise for accurately exploring the fast-changing biogeochemical impacts of metal redox cycling in soils and represent a significant advance for reactions that have been difficult to quantify.

The relationship between tree size and tree water-use: is competition for water size-symmetric or size-asymmetric?

Relationships between tree size and water use indicate how soil water is partitioned between differently sized individuals, and hence competition for water. These relationships are rarely examined, let alone whether there is consistency in shape across populations. Competition for water among plants is often assumed to be size-symmetric, i.e., exponents (b1) of power functions (water use ∝ biomassb1) equal to 1, with all sizes using the same amount of water proportionally to their size. We tested the hypothesis that b1 actually varies greatly, and based on allometric theory, that b1 is only centered around 1 when size is quantified as basal area or sapwood area (not diameter). We also examined whether b1 varies spatially and temporally in relation to stand structure (height and density) and climate. Tree water use ∝ sizeb1 power functions were fitted for 80 species and 103 sites using the global SAPFLUXNET database. The b1 were centered around 1 when tree size was given as basal area or sapwood area, but not as diameter. The 95% confidence intervals of b1 included the theoretical predictions for the scaling of plant vascular networks. b1 changed through time within a given stand for the species with the longest time series, such that larger trees gained an advantage during warmer and wetter conditions. Spatial comparisons across the entire dataset showed that b1 correlated only weakly (R2 < 12%) with stand structure or climate, suggesting that inter-specific variability in b1 and hence the symmetry of competition for water may be largely related to inter-specific differences in tree architecture or physiology rather than to climate or stand structure. In conclusion, size-symmetric competition for water (b1 ≈ 1) may only be assumed when size is quantified as basal area or sapwood area, and when describing a general pattern across forest types and species. There is substantial deviation in b1 between individual stands and species.

Molecular Collective Response and Dynamical Symmetry Properties in Biopotentials of Superior Plants: Experimental Observations and Quantum Field Theory Modeling

Trees employ impulses of electrical activity to coordinate actions of their bodies and long-distance communication. There are indications that the vascular system might act as a network of pathways for traveling electrical impulses. A question arises about the correlation and interplay between the molecular (microscopic) level and the macroscopic observable behavior of the system (the electrical impulses), for individual trees and as a component of the larger living ecosystem, the forest. Results from the “Cyberforest Experiment” in the Paneveggio forest (Valle di Fiemme, Trento, Italy) are presented. It is shown that: (i) biopotential features of xylem biomolecular activity can be correlated with the solar (and lunar) cycle, (ii) tree stubs show an electrical molecular activity that is correlated with that of neighboring trees, (iii) statistical features of spike-like peaks and entropy can be correlated with corresponding thermal entropy, and (iv) basic symmetries of the quantum field theory dynamics are responsible for the entanglement phenomenon in the molecular interactions resulting in the molecular collective behavior of the forest. Findings suggest implementing technology that goes in the direction of understanding the language of trees, eventually of fungi, which have created a universal living network perhaps using a common language.

Evaluation of substrate clogging in a full-scale horizontal subsurface flow treatment wetland using electrical resistivity tomography with an optimized electrode configuration

This study investigated the spatial distribution of clogging matter in a full-scale horizontal subsurface flow treatment wetland (HSSF TW) based on an electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) method, comparing the performance of two different electrode configurations (i.e., Schlumberger and Wenner arrays). The results indicated that during the draining phase, the substrate apparent resistivities of the full-scale HSSF TWs were negatively correlated with the clogging matter fraction (v/v), and a functional relationship between the two parameters was established using a first-order k-C* model. The detected clogging matter fraction (v/v) based on the Schlumberger array showed higher accuracy (linear slope = 0.900, R-squared = 0.902) than the Wenner array (linear slope = 0.685, R-squared = 0.685). Most of the severe substrate clogging in the full-scale HSSF TW occurred within a 10-m flow distance, and the distribution of the clogging matter showed different characteristics at different substrate depths. From a cross section positioned 1 m from the inlet, the average clogging matter fraction (v/v) at a 0-0.30 m depth (23.1 ± 14.9%) was significantly higher than that at a 0.30-0.80 m depth (5.0 ± 2.1%). The clogging matter at a 5-m flow distance was evenly distributed at different substrate depths. Only a few localized clogging zones were observed in the cross section at a 10-m flow distance. This study provided an accurate and feasible method for investigating the volume fraction of clogging matters containing different organic contents and demonstrates the spatial heterogeneity of clogging matter in HSSF TWs.

Geophysical and contamination assessment of soil spatial variability for sustainable precision agriculture in Omu-Aran farm, Northcentral Nigeria

The spatial and temporal variability of soil properties (fluid composition, structure, and water content) and hydrogeological properties employed for sustainable precision agriculture can be obtained from geoelectrical resistivity methods. For sustainable precision agricultural practices, site-specific information is paramount, especially during the planting season. An integrated one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) electrical resistivity survey have been adopted to characterize the subsoil parameters and delineate the aquifer unit of large farm areas, especially in precision agricultural practices. Also, contamination assessment reveals the soil quality status of farmlands. This study aims to determine the site-specific soil parameters of a commercial farm in Omu-Aran, Northcentral, Nigeria. The subsoil features from the geoelectrical resistivity surveys indicate 3 to 4 distinctive lithology to a depth of 43.4 m into the subsurface of the farm. The ID (Vertical Electrical Sounding) and 2D resistivity inversion models results have revealed the heterogeneity nature of the topsoil, also known as the stone zone comprising of reworked clayey soil and sandy gravelly soil, the weathered/saprolite zone (gravelly sandy/sandy soil), the fractured basement and the fresh basement rock. Contamination factor (Cf), pollution load index (PLI) and Nemerow integrated pollution index (NIPI) were used to assess the contamination index on the farmland. Toxic elements such as arsenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, lead, manganese, nickel, and zinc have low to moderate contamination in the farm. The depth of investigation (≤3m) covers the upper root zone of significant crops grown in the area. The findings can assess soil contamination, delineate basement features, subsoil variability, soil profiling, and determine the subsoil hydrological properties.

Electromagnetic Induction Is a Fast and Non-Destructive Approach to Estimate the Influence of Subsurface Heterogeneity on Forest Canopy Structure

The spatial forest structure that drives the functioning of these ecosystems and their response to global change is closely linked to edaphic conditions. However, the latter properties are particularly difficult to characterize in forest areas developed on karst, where soil is highly rocky and heterogeneous. In this work, we investigated whether geophysics, and more specifically electromagnetic induction (EMI), can provide a better understanding of forest structure. We use EMI (EM31, Geonics Limited, Ontario, Canada) to study the spatial variability of ground properties in two different Mediterranean forests. A naturally post-fire regenerated forest composed of Aleppo pines and Holm oaks and a monospecific plantation of Altlas cedar. To better interpret EMI results, we used electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), soil depth surveys, and field observations. Vegetation was also characterized using hemispherical photographs that allowed to calculate plant area index (PAI). Our results show that the variability of ground properties contribute to explaining the variability in the vegetation cover development (plant area index). Vegetation density is higher in areas where the soil is deeper. We showed a significant correlation between edaphic conditions and tree development in the naturally regenerated forest, but this relationship is clearly weaker in the cedar plantation. We hypothesized that regular planting after subsoiling, as well as sylvicultural practices (thinning and pruning) influenced the expected relationship between vegetation structure and soil conditions measured by EMI. This work opens up new research avenues to better understand the interplay between soil and subsoil variability and forest response to climate change.

Seasonal variations of electrical signals of Pinus halepensis Mill. in Mediterranean forests in dependence on climatic conditions

The temporal evolution of the electrical signal generated by Pinus halepensis was measured in a sample of 15 trees. Weekly experiments were carried out during a long-term campaign lasting over a year, while trials with a high frequency of measurements were also performed during several days. In the latter case, day-night oscillations of the electrical magnitudes were observed. Additionally, punctual meteorological events such as rainfall and electrical storms affect the electrical signal as well.The measured electrical intensity grows exponentially with the voltage. In fact, no electrical intensity that exceeds the threshold of 0.01 μA is gathered when voltage values are lower than 0.6 V. In general, higher electrical signals were gathered during the rainy seasons with moderate temperatures; while very low signals, including few measures of zero intensity, were obtained during the most stressful periods over the year, mainly by mid-summer.There is a strong correlation between the rainfall and the electrical signal. The rain-intensity correlation, together with sustained intensity values during the reproductive period in spring, suggests that this electrical magnitude could be an indicator of the physiological state of the tree and thus used for in situ and minimally invasive forest monitoring.

Water 'on the rocks': a summer drink for thirsty trees?

Drought-induced tree mortality frequently occurs in patches with different spatial and temporal distributions, which is only partly explained by inter- and intraspecific variation in drought tolerance. We investigated whether bedrock properties, with special reference to rock water storage capacity, affects tree water status and drought response in a rock-dominated landscape. We measured primary porosity and available water content of breccia (B) and dolostone (D) rocks. Saplings of Fraxinus ornus were grown in pots filled with soil or soil mixed with B and D rocks, and subjected to an experimental drought. Finally, we measured seasonal changes in water status of trees in field sites overlying B or D bedrock. B rocks were more porous and stored more available water than D rocks. Potted saplings grown with D rocks had less biomass and suffered more severe water stress than those with B rocks. Trees in sites with B bedrock had more favourable water status than those on D bedrock which also suffered drought-induced canopy dieback. Bedrock represents an important water source for plants under drought. Different bedrock features translate into contrasting below-ground water availability, leading to landscape-level heterogeneity of the impact of drought on tree water status and dieback.

Can Soil Electrical Resistivity Measurements Aid the Identification of Forest Areas Prone to Windthrow Disturbance?

This study investigates how certain forest soil properties influence the propensity of beech forests to windthrow disturbances. The field measurements of soil electrical resistivity were carried out in an old-growth natural beech forest where the soil has developed from Cainozoic sedimentary rock with mudstone–claystone stratigraphy. In 2014, the forest was hit by a severe windstorm, and dispersed windthrow occurred at certain plots. Apparent electrical resistivity measurements were performed to investigate whether some soil properties could influence the forest trees’ predisposition to windthrow. The increases in the clay content and soil bulk density below 30 cm were associated with weathered claystone and mudstone, which created a physiological barrier for deeper root penetration. The result of the χ 2 test suggested that the windthrown spots were not distributed evenly over the entire study area. They were mainly concentrated over approximately 50% of the area, and their positions coincided with low resistivity values, indicating low soil skeleton content, high clay content and soil moisture. Therefore, electrical resistivity tomography could be considered a useful predictive tool for reducing the risk of natural disturbances by preventive forest management.

The role of deep vadose zone water in tree transpiration during drought periods in karst settings - Insights from isotopic tracing and leaf water potential

Karst environments are unusual because their dry, stony and shallow soils seem to be unfavorable to vegetation, and yet they are often covered with forests. How can trees survive in these environments? Where do they find the water that allows them to survive? This study uses midday and predawn water potentials and xylem water isotopes of branches to assess tree water status and the origin of transpired water. Monitoring was conducted during the summers of 2014 and 2015 in two dissimilar plots of Mediterranean forest located in karst environments. The results show that the three monitored tree species (Abies alba Mill, Fagus sylvatica L, and Quercus ilex L.) use deep water resources present in the karst vadose zone (unsaturated zone) more intensively during drier years. Quercus ilex, a species well- adapted to water stress, which grows at the drier site, uses the deep water resource very early in the summer season. Conversely, the two other species exploit the deep water resource only during severe drought. These results open up new perspectives to a better understanding of ecohydrological equilibrium and to improved water balance modeling in karst forest settings.
