Feasibility of brackish water and landfill leachate treatment by GO/MoS2-PVA composite membranes

GO/MoS2@PVA composite membrane-based optical fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer for humidity sensing and its non-contact sensing application

A humidity sensor based on an optical fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) coated with a GO/MoS2@PVA composite membrane was investigated for non-contact sensing. MoS2 was used as a nanospacer to enhance the humidity-sensitive properties of GO, and the adhesion and stability of the composite membrane on the fiber surface could be increased by PVA. The proposed sensor shows a maximum sensitivity of 0.26 dB/%RH with average response and recovery times of 1.62 and 1.11 s, respectively. In non-contact sensing applications, the sensor can effectively recognize a maximum distance of 10 mm for the proximity of a human finger with a distance variation interval of 3 mm. The proposed sensor is expected to be applied in non-contact distance detection and localization or as a non-contact human-computer interaction panel.

Life cycle assessment and thermophysical properties of a fly ash-based geopolymer containing drinking water treatment sludge

Fly ash-based geopolymers have emerged as a sustainable alternative in construction, leveraging industrial by-products to mitigate CO2 emissions. This study investigates the novel incorporation of drinking water treatment sludge (DWTS) into fly ash-based geopolymers at varying proportions (5-40%). Authors focus is to analyze the thermophysical properties and environmental implications, including a robust life cycle assessment case study conducted within the Moroccan context. The comprehensive analysis encompassed X-ray powder diffraction, apparent porosity, water absorption, scanning electron microscopy, hot disc, compressive strength, and a comparative assessment of fly ash-based geopolymer containing 20% of DWTS (GP-DWTS-20) and ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Notably, the results reveal that DWTS enhances thermal performance, with a remarkable 33% reduction in thermal conductivity observed in geopolymers containing 20% DWTS. This enhancement motivates the potential for innovative fly ash-based geopolymers. Moreover, the study contributes quantifiable evidence of a substantial 48% reduction in global warming potential for DWTS-based geopolymers compared to OPC. These findings underscore the environmental benefits of this alternative while emphasizing avenues for optimization in alkaline solution, curing, and renewable energy integration.

Construction of a Two-Dimensional GO/Ti3C2TX Composite Membrane and Investigation of Mg2+/Li+ Separation Performance

Graphene oxide (GO) two-dimensional (2D) membranes with unique layer structures and tunable layer spacing have special advantages and great potential in the field of water treatment. However, GO membranes face the issues of weak anti-swelling ability as well as poor permeability. We prepared GO/Ti3C2TX 2D composite membranes with 2D/2D structures by intercalating Ti3C2TX nanosheets with slightly smaller sizes into GO membranes. Ti3C2TX intercalation can effectively expand the layer spacing of GO, thereby substantially enhancing the flux of the composite membrane (2.82 to 6.35 L·m-2·h-1). Moreover, the GO/Ti3C2TX composite membrane exhibited a good Mg2+/Li+ separation capability. For the simulated brine, the separation factor of M2 was 3.81, and the salt solution flux was as high as 5.26 L·m-2·h-1. Meanwhile, the incorporation of Ti3C2TX nanosheets significantly improved the stability of GO/Ti3C2TX membranes in different pH environments. This study provides a unique insight into the preparation of highly permeable and ion-selective GO membranes.

Going beyond Cellulose and Chitosan: Synthetic Biodegradable Membranes for Drinking Water, Wastewater, and Oil-Water Remediation

Membrane technology is an efficient way to purify water, but it generates non-biodegradable biohazardous waste. This waste ends up in landfills, incinerators, or microplastics, threatening the environment. To address this, research is being conducted to develop compostable alternatives that are sustainable and ecofriendly. Bioplastics, which are expected to capture 40% of the market share by 2030, represent one such alternative. This review examines the feasibility of using synthetic biodegradable materials beyond cellulose and chitosan for water treatment, considering cost, carbon footprint, and stability in mechanical, thermal, and chemical environments. Although biodegradable membranes have the potential to close the recycling loop, challenges such as brittleness and water stability limit their use in membrane applications. The review suggests approaches to tackle these issues and highlights recent advances in the field of biodegradable membranes for water purification. The end-of-life perspective of these materials is also discussed, as their recyclability and compostability are critical factors in reducing the environmental impact of membrane technology. This review underscores the need to develop sustainable alternatives to conventional membrane materials and suggests that biodegradable membranes have great potential to address this challenge.

Peroxymonosulfate activation by graphene oxide-supported 3D-MoS2/FeCo2O4 sponge for highly efficient organic pollutants degradation

To address conventional powder catalysts' recovery and aggregation issues that greatly restrain their practical application, a recoverable graphene oxide (GO)-supported 3D-MoS₂/FeCo₂O₄ sponge (SFCMG) was developed through a simple impregnation pyrolysis method. SFCMG can efficiently activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to produce reactive species for rapid degradation of rhodamine B (RhB), with 95.0% and 100% of RhB being removed within 2 min and 10 min, respectively. The presence of GO enhances the electron transfer performance of the sponge, and the three-dimensional melamine sponge serves as a substrate to provide a highly dispersed carrier for FeCo₂O₄ and MoS₂/GO hybrid sheets. SFCMG exhibits a synergistic catalytic effect of Fe and Co, and facilitates the redox cycles of Fe(III)/Fe(II) and Co(III)/Co(II) by MoS₂ co-catalysis, which enhances its catalytic activity. Electron paramagnetic resonance results demonstrate that SO₄^•-, ·O₂^- and ¹O₂ are all involved in SFCMG/PMS system, and ¹O₂ played a prominent role in RhB degradation. The system has good resistance to anions (Cl^-, SO₄^2-, and H₂PO₄^-) and humic acid and excellent performance for many typical contaminants degradation. Additionally, it works efficiently over a wide pH range (3-9) and possesses high stability and reusability with the metal leaching far below the safety standards. The present study extends the practical application of metal co-catalysis and offers a promising Fenton-like catalyst for the treatment of organic wastewater.

Novel Approach to Landfill Wastewater Treatment Fouling Mitigation: Air Gap Membrane Distillation with Tin Sulfide-Coated PTFE Membrane

This study addressed the fouling issue in membrane distillation (M.D.) technology, a promising method for water purification and wastewater reclamation. To enhance the anti-fouling properties of the M.D. membrane, a tin sulfide (TS) coating onto polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was proposed and evaluated with air gap membrane distillation (AGMD) using landfill leachate wastewater at high recovery rates (80% and 90%). The presence of TS on the membrane surface was confirmed using various techniques, such as Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), contact angle measurement, and porosity analysis. The results indicated the TS-PTFE membrane exhibited better anti-fouling properties than the pristine PTFE membrane, and its fouling factors (FFs) were 10.4-13.1% compared to 14.4-16.5% for the PTFE membrane. The fouling was attributed to pore blockage and cake formation of carbonous and nitrogenous compounds. The study also found that physical cleaning with deionized (DI) water effectively restored the water flux, with more than 97% recovered for the TS-PTFE membrane. Additionally, the TS-PTFE membrane showed better water flux and product quality at 55 °C and excellent stability in maintaining the contact angle over time compared to the PTFE membrane.

Membranes Coated with Graphene-Based Materials: A Review

Graphene is a popular material with outstanding properties due to its single layer. Graphene and its oxide have been put to the test as nano-sized building components for separation membranes with distinctive structures and adjustable physicochemical attributes. Graphene-based membranes have exhibited excellent water and gas purification abilities, which have garnered the spotlight over the past decade. This work aims to examine the most recent science and engineering cutting-edge advances of graphene-based membranes in regard to design, production and use. Additional effort will be directed towards the breakthroughs in synthesizing graphene and its composites to create various forms of membranes, such as nanoporous layers, laminates and graphene-based compounds. Their efficiency in separating and decontaminating water via different techniques such as cross-linking, layer by layer and coating will also be explored. This review intends to offer comprehensive, up-to-date information that will be useful to scientists of multiple disciplines interested in graphene-based membranes.

Recent Development in Laminar Transition Metal Dichalcogenides-based Membranes Towards Water Desalination: A Review

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs)-based laminar membranes have gained significant interest in energy storage, fuel cell, gas separation, wastewater treatment, and desalination applications due to single layer structure, good functionality, high mechanical strength, and chemical resistivity. Herein, we review the recent efforts and development on TMDCs-based laminar membranes, and focus is given on their fabrication strategies. Further, TMDCs-based laminar membranes for water purification and seawater desalination are discussed in detail. Finally, present their merits, limits and future challenges needed in this area.

Photocatalytic degradation of dye wastewater by stepwise assembling PVA aerogel/TiO2/MoS2/Au composites in visible light

A PVA aerogel/TiO₂/MoS₂/Au catalyst formed gradually using a hydrothermal method is used to degrade Rhodamine B. SEM and TEM results show that the composite presents a uniform and well-structured porous network structure, high specific surface area and large pore diameter were proved by the results of nitrogen adsorption measurement. UV-vis DRS and PL results indicate that the composite has a high absorption rate in the visible light range, and the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs can be effectively inhibited because the composite material forms a heterojunction. In the photocatalytic degradation experiment of Rhodamine B, the composite material shows high photocatalytic performance, which can reach 86% in two hours of light. The photocatalysts supported by PVA are easy to recover and have high catalytic performance even after five recycles. The study shows that PVA/TiO₂/MoS₂/Au composite material has great potential to be used for the degradation of dye wastewater.

Water treatment sludge conversion to biochar as cementitious material in cement composite

Water treatment sludge was successfully thermally converted to obtain biochar as a stable material with resource potential. This research explored the application of sludge biochar as a supplementary cementitious material. The cement paste samples incorporating different amounts of sludge biochar were prepared, hardened, and analyzed for performance. The results show an improvement in hydration kinetics and mechanical properties of cement paste incorporating biochar, compared to raw sewage sludge. The mineralogical, thermal and microscopic analyses show evidence of pozzolanic activity of the biochar. The samples with 2% and 5% biochar showed higher heat release than the reference material. Specimens with 1%, 2% and 5% biochar showed a slightly higher compressive strength at 28 days compared to the reference material. Sludge conversion to biochar will incur an estimated cost of US$398.23/ton, which is likely to be offset by the substantial benefits from avoiding landfill and saving valuable cementitious materials. Therefore, this research has demonstrated that through conversion to biochar, water treatment sludge can be promoted as a sustainable and alternative cementitious material for cement with minimum environmental impacts, hence contributing to circular economy.

Preparation of fouling resistant and highly perm-selective novel PSf/GO-vanillin nanofiltration membrane for efficient water purification

To meet the rising global demand for water, it is necessary to develop membranes capable of efficiently purifying contaminated water sources. Herein, we report a series of novel polysulfone (PSf)/GO-vanillin nanofiltration membranes highly permeable, selective, and fouling resistant. The membranes are composed of two-dimensional (2D) graphite oxide (GO) layers embedded with vanillin as porogen and PSf as the base polymer. There is a growing interest in addressing the synergistic effect of GO and vanillin on improving the permeability and antifouling characteristics of membranes. Various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques were used to perform detailed physicochemical and morphological analyses. The optimized PSf₁₆/GO_0.15-vanillin_0.8 membrane demonstrated 92.5% and 25.4% rejection rate for 2000 ppm magnesium sulphate (MgSO₄) and sodium chloride (NaCl) solutions respectively. Antifouling results showed over 99% rejection for BSA and 93.57% flux recovery ratio (FRR). Experimental work evaluated the antifouling characteristics of prepared membranes to treat landfill leachate wastewater. The results showed 84-90% rejection for magnesium (Mg⁺²) and calcium (Ca⁺²) with 90.32 FRR. The study experimentally demonstrated that adding GO and vanillin to the polymeric matrix significantly improves fouling resistance and membrane performance. Future research will focus on molecular sieving for industrial separations and other niche applications using mixed matrix membranes.

Feasibility of H2O2 cleaning for forward osmosis membrane treating landfill leachate

This study reports landfill leachate treatment by the forward osmosis (FO) process using hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) for membrane cleaning. Although chemical cleaning is an effective method for fouling control, it could compromise membrane integrity. Thus, understanding the impact of chemical cleaning on the forward osmosis membrane is essential to improving the membrane performance and lifespan. Preliminary results revealed a flux recovery of 98% in the AL-FS mode (active layer facing feed solution) and 90% in the AL-DS (draw solution faces active layer) using 30% H₂O₂ solution diluted to 3% by pure water. The experimental work investigated the effects of chemical cleaning on the polyamide active and polysulfone support layers since the FO membrane could operate in both orientations. Results revealed that polysulfone support layer was more sensitive to H₂O₂ damage than the polyamide active at a neutral pH. The extended exposure of thin-film composite (TFC) FO membrane to H₂O₂ was investigated, and the active layer tolerated H₂O₂ for 72 h, and the support layer for only 40 h. Extended operation of the TFC FO membrane in the AL-FS based on a combination of physical (hydraulic flushing with DI water) and H₂O₂ was reported, and chemical cleaning with H₂O₂ could still recover 92% of the flux.
