Abstract
Ti/SnO2-Sb electrodes possess high catalytic activity and efficiently degrade nitrobenzene (NB); however, their low service life limits their wide application. In this study, we used one-step hydrothermal synthesis to successfully prepare Pt-Nd co-doped Ti/SnO2-Sb nanosphere electrodes. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were applied to characterize the surface morphology, microstructure, and chemical composition of the electrodes, respectively. The electrochemical activity and stability of the electrodes were characterized via linear sweep and cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and an accelerated service life test; their performance for NB degradation was also studied. An appropriate amount of Pt-Nd co-doping refined the average grain size of SnO2 and formed a uniform and compact coating on the electrode surface. The oxygen evolution potential, total voltammetric charge, and electron transfer resistance of the Ti/SnO2-Sb-Nd-Pt electrodes were 1.88 V, 3.77 mC/cm2, and 11.50 Ω, respectively. Hydroxy radical was the main active radical species during the electrolytic degradation of nitrobenzene with Ti/SnO2-Sb-Nd-Pt. After Pt-Nd co-doping, the accelerated service life of the electrodes was extended from 8.0 min to 78.2 h (500 mA/cm2); although the NB degradation rate decreased from 94.1 to 80.6%, the total amount of theoretical catalytic degradation of NB in the effective working time increased from 17.4 to 8754.1 mg/cm2. These findings reveal good application potential for the electrodes and provide a reference for developing efficient and stable electrode materials.

Abstract
Rhodamine B (RhB) wastewater could be degraded by a three-dimensional electrolytic reactor with surface-modified titanium anodes, and a variety of materials had been tried to prepare for particles electrodes to enhance its removal effects, among them, granular activated carbon (GAC) with large specific surface areas and stable chemical properties was selected as particles materials and coated by manganese oxidation (Mn) as the main active ingredient. The experimental results showed that 98.3% of RhB and 60.7% of chemical oxygen demand were removed respectively, and the RhB wastewater's biodegradability was improved either. On the superficial sites of GAC/Mn-Sn particles, hydroxyl radicals were generated, and some absorbed RhB molecular was initially decolored by hypochlorite removing the two ethyl groups on both sides of the molecular, then oxidized by hydroxyl, and continually decomposed by these strong oxidants into a variety of intermediates.

Efficient removal of RR2 dye by electro- Ce(III) process with its elegant arts and attractive charm in performance, energy consumption and mechanism. ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH 2023; 216:114590. [PMID: 36252834 DOI: 10.1016/j.envres.2022.114590] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/07/2022] [Revised: 10/03/2022] [Accepted: 10/11/2022] [Indexed: 06/16/2023]
Abstract
Reactive red 2 (RR2) azo dye wastewater poses a serious hazard to the water environment health, so using a novel and efficient Electro- Ce(III) (E- Ce(III)) process takes on a critical significance in treating RR2 dye wastewater. In this study, the effects of a variety of single-factor conditions on RR2 removal efficiency were evaluated in depth. The results indicated that the optimal experimental conditions are as reaction temperature of 25 °C, Na2SO4 concentration of 25 mM, Ce(III) concentration of 0.3 mM, pH of 4.0, and current density of 40.0 mA/cm2. When the RR2 dye wastewater was treated for 40 min under the optimal experimental conditions, a high removal rate of 99.8% for RR2 was obtained. It is suggested that the background ion PO43- in the dye wastewater inhibits the E-Ce (III) process, whereas Cl- facilitates this process. Moreover, the yield of Ce(IV) increases with the increase of the current density. At the current density of 40.0 mA/cm2, a reasonable energy consumption of 3.85 kW h/gTOC for the process was obtained after the 3-h treatment. The effects of different degradation processes (including Direct Electrooxidation (DEO), single Ce(III), and E-Ce (III)) on RR2 removal efficiency and TOC change were compared. The types of oxidizing substances in the E-Ce (III) process were detected, and the mechanism of RR2 oxidative degradation in the E-Ce (III) process was summarized. The result suggests that the E-Ce (III) process has low power consumption. Meanwhile, in the E-Ce (III) process, free reactive Ce(IV) with strong oxidation is continuously generated, RR2 can be efficiently degraded. And the continuous cycle transformation between Ce(III) and Ce(IV) maintains the strong oxidation of the process. The contribution of free reactive Ce(IV) and DEO to RR2 degradation was obtained as 58.8% and 39.8%, respectively. The combined effect of Ce(IV) and DEO played a major role in the E-Ce (III) process, while ·OH exhibited a relatively weak effect (nearly 1.4%). RR2 was comprised of 13 major intermediates, and the biodegradability of wastewater was improved significantly after treatment, thus facilitating the further mineralization and biodegradation of the products. The E- Ce(III) process is novel, efficient, and environment-friendly, and has a large market application space, suggesting that it can be applied as an efficient, economic, and sustainable water treatment process.

Abstract
Oxygen vacancies play a vital role in the catalytic activity of layered double hydroxide (LDH) catalysts in wastewater treatment. However, the mechanism of oxygen vacancy-mediated LDH-activated oxygen to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) still lacks a reasonable explanation. In this work, a tartrate-modified CuCoFe-LDH (CuCoFe/Tar-LDH) with abundant oxygen vacancies was designed, which can efficiently degrade nitrobenzene (NB) under room conditions. The technical energy consumption is 0.011 kW h L-1. According to the characterization and calculation results, it is proposed that oxygen vacancies are formed because of the oxygen deficiency which is caused by the reduction of the energy between the metal ion and oxygen, and the metal ion transitions to a lower state. Compared with CuCoFe-LDH, the oxygen vacancy formation energy of CuCoFe/Tar-LDH decreased from 1.98 to 1.13 eV. The O2 bond length adsorbed on the oxygen vacancy is 1.27 Å, close to the theoretical length of superoxide radicals (•O2-) (1.26 Å). Radical trapping experiments and electron spin-resonance spectroscopy spectrum prove that •O2- is an important precursor of •OH. This work is dedicated to the in-depth exploration of the oxygen vacancy-mediated CuCoFe/Tar-LDH catalyst activation mechanism for molecular oxygen and the conversion relationship between ROS.

Abstract
In this work, sulfur and zinc were used to modify the steel slag/kaolin particle electrodes. Sulfur-zinc modified kaolin/steel slag particle electrodes (S-Zn-KSPEs) was successfully prepared. In a wide pH range (pH 3-10), S-Zn-KSPEs could efficiently degrade norfloxacin at low voltage (4 V) within 90 min. The removal rate of NOR by S-Zn-KSPEs was about 100% in acidic environment, more than 90% in neutral environment, and more than 80% in alkaline environment. And S-Zn-KSPEs could also efficiently degrade methylene blue, diuron, levofloxacin and other refractory pollutants under neutral conditions. S-Zn-KSPEs showed good stability and recyclability, and could maintain high catalytic activity after 8 cycles in a neutral or alkaline environment. The possible degradation mechanism and the degradation pathway of norfloxacin are proposed. In addition, S-Zn-KSPEs also showed a higher treatment effect in the treatment of actual surface water bodies. And S-Zn-KSPEs had a strong acid-base buffering capacity, which could avoid some pretreatment measures of wastewater in practical applications.

Abstract
Bio-electro-Fenton is emerging as an alternative technology for the efficient and cost-effective removal of refractory micropollutants. Though promising, there are still several challenges that limit its wide application, including acidic operating conditions (pH at 2-3), the addition of supporting electrolytes (e.g., Na2SO4), and the issue of iron sludge generation. To address these challenges, a novel hybrid persulfate-photo-bioelectrochemical (PPBEC) system is proposed to remove model micropollutants (carbamazepine and clorfibric acid), from secondary effluent at low persulfate (PS) dosage and neutral pH. The effect of crucial operating parameters on the process was studied, including input voltage, cathodic aeration velocity, and PS dose. Under optimal conditions (0.6 V, 0.005 mL min-1 mL-1 and 1 mM), the PPBEC system achieved approx. 0.56-1.71 times greater micropollutant removal with 93% lower energy consumption when compared to the individual processes (UV/PS and PBEC). The improved performance was attributed to a faster production of sulfate radicals by UV irradiation, hydrogen peroxide activation and single-electron reduction, and hydroxyl radicals generated by UV irradiation. Furthermore, the transformation products of carbamazepine and clorfibric acid were identified and the probable pathways are proposed. Finally, the ecotoxicity of the PPBEC treated effluent was assessed by using Vibrio Fischeri, which exhibited a non-toxic effect.

Abstract
In this work, kaolin/steel slag particle electrodes (KSPEs) were synthesized using a calcination method, and they were used to degrade norfloxacin (NOR) wastewater in three-dimensional (3D) reactor. Characterization methods used by KSPEs included SEM, XRF, XRD and BET. The effects of cell voltage, initial pH, KSPEs dosage and initial NOR concentration on NOR degradation were studied in the optimization experiment of operating parameters. The NOR degradation rate and COD removal rate can reach 96.02% and 93.45% under the optimal parameters within 30 min, and energy consumption is 0.99 kWh m-3. As a result, KSPEs shows excellent catalytic performance and cycling, and still has high electrocatalytic activity after 10 cycles. Finally, the degradation mechanism and degradation pathways of KSPEs to treat NOR are proposed.

Abstract
Electro-Fenton (EF) technique has gained significant attention in recent years owing to its high efficiency and environmental compatibility for the degradation of organic pollutants and contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). The efficiency of an EF reaction relies primarily on the formation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) via 2e─ oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the generation of hydroxyl radicals (●OH). This could be achieved through an efficient cathode material which operates over a wide pH range (pH 3-9). Herein, the current progresses on the advancements of carbonaceous cathode materials for EF reactions are comprehensively reviewed. The insights of various materials such as, activated carbon fibres (ACFs), carbon/graphite felt (CF/GF), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, carbon aerogels (CAs), ordered mesoporous carbon (OMCs), etc. are discussed inclusively. Transition metals and hetero atoms were used as dopants to enhance the efficiency of homogeneous and heterogeneous EF reactions. Iron-functionalized cathodes widened the working pH window (pH 1-9) and limited the energy consumption. The mechanism, reactor configuration, and kinetic models, are explained. Techno economic analysis of the EF reaction revealed that the anode and the raw materials contributed significantly to the overall cost. It is concluded that most reactions follow pseudo-first order kinetics and rotating cathodes provide the best H2O2 production efficiency in lab scale. The challenges, future prospects and commercialization of EF reaction for wastewater treatment are also discussed.

Abstract
A novel cellulose–styrene copolymer adsorbent (cellulose-St) was prepared using free radical polymerization. Successful polymerization was confirmed through Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Carbon 13 Solid Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (13C NMR) Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), etc. Cellulose-St possessed good hydrophobicity, and the best water contact angle of cellulose-St samples could reach 146°. It had the ability of adsorption for nitrobenzene (NB), and the adsorption process could be well described by the pseudo-second-order (R2 > 0.99) and three-stage intraparticle diffusion (R2 > 0.99) kinetic models. Furthermore, the dynamic adsorption experiments revealed that cellulose-St had the potential for continuous separation of NB in water, and the breakthrough point for the initial NB concentration of 10 mg/L reached 1.275 L/g. Moreover, cellulose-St exhibited excellent environmental adaptability that it could maintain its hydrophobicity and adsorption ability for NB in strong acids, strong alkalis, or organic solvents. The used cellulose-St could be reused after washing with ethanol and keep almost constant adsorption capacity after ten cycles.

Abstract
Choosing an electrode material with good performance and low cost is of great significance for the practical application of the electro-Fenton process. In this study, graphite felt was systematically studied to determine its application performance in an electro-Fenton system. The influence of operating parameters, pH and voltage, on the H2O2 yield and the evolution of iron ions was investigated, which helped to select the optimal parameter values. The removal rate of methylene blue was 97.8% after 20 min electrolysis under the conditions of 7 V voltage and pH 3. Inhibition experiments showed the graphite felt E-Fenton system mainly relied on the indirect oxidation of ·OH and the direct oxidation of the graphite felt anode to degrade the methylene blue. The graphite felt showed good stability as a cathode during repeated use, but the anode conductivity and catalytic performance were decreased, and the adsorption performance was enhanced. Finally, the graphite felt electrode was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to preliminarily analyze the reason for the change in anode performance.

Abstract
In this work, Ti-Sn-Sb/γ-Al2O3 particle electrodes were prepared and employed for the degradation of oxytetracycline (OTC) by three-dimensional electrocatalytic technology. Factors associated with the preparation of Ti-Sn-Sb/γ-Al2O3 particle electrodes were investigated. The effects of initial concentration, conductivity, pH value, aeration intensity, current density, plate spacing, and particle electrode dosage on OTC removal were studied. The removal rate of OTC and total organic carbon were achieved approximately 92.0% and 41.0% under the optimal operating condition, respectively. In addition, Ti-Sn-Sb/γ-Al2O3 particle electrode was analyzed by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrum analysis (EDX), X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (XRF), and X Ray Diffraction analysis (XRD), which indicated that a significant amount of TiO2, SnO2, and Sb2O3 were formed on the surface of Ti-Sn-Sb/γ-Al2O3 particle electrode. It was also observed that the primary function of Ti-Sn-Sb/γ-Al2O3 particle electrode in the three-dimensional electrode electrolysis process is the strong oxidizing function of ·OH for degrading OTC. Consequently, the analysis of degradation products of oxytetracycline (OTC) demonstrates. In addition, the results and conclusions of this study provide a methodological basis and engineering practice basis for removing the low concentration of antibiotics in water.

Abstract
In this work, highly efficient Bi-Sn-Sb/γ-Al2O3 particle electrodes were prepared for effectively degrading tetracycline. The effects of a mass ratio (Sn: Sb), the mass ration of Bi:(Sn + Sb), impregnation times, calcination temperature, and calcination time on the electrocatalytic oxidation capacity of Bi-Sn-Sb/γ-Al2O3 particle electrode was investigated. Conditions in which mass ratio of (Sn: Sb) = 10:1, the mass ratio of Bi:(Sn/Sb) = 1:1, impregnation times 2 h, calcination temperature 500 °C., and calcination time 3 h were considered as optimal preparation conditions for Bi-Sn-Sb/γ-Al2O3 particle electrode. It was cherecterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray detector (EDX), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) techniques to conforming that the triclinic Bi2O3 formed in the preparation conditions has superior electrocatalytic activity. The electrocatalytic oxidation mechanism of tetracycline by Bi-Sn-Sb/γ-Al2O3 particle electrode is proposed by determining degradation intermediates through LC-MS detection. Electrocatalytic oxidation experiments by adding tert-butyl alcohol indicate that the formation of OH is the primary responsibility for degradating tetracycline. Electrocatalytic degradation of tetracycline at different initial concentration shows that the degradation of tetracycline meets the pseudo first-order kinetics. Results suggest that the three-dimensional electrochemical reactor with Bi-Sn-Sb/γ-Al2O3 particle electrodes could be an alternative for the pretreatment of antibiotic wastewater before biological treatment.

Abstract
In order to solve the problem of slag recycling and dyeing wastewater treatment synchronously, the slag particles is used as raw material to prepare the particle electrodes, and the optimum preparation conditions of the slag particle electrodes is obtained through orthogonal test. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometer and micro-hole physics and chemical adsorption analyzer are used to characterize and analyze the surface morphology, crystal structure, specific surface area and pore shape of the particle electrode. The operating parameters of the reaction system are optimized, and the energy consumption per order is calculated in optimized experimental conditions. The radical scavenging mechanism of three free radical scavengers (methanol, tert-butanol, and phenol) is studied, and the type of the main active substance participating in degradation of Methylene blue and the location of the degradation reaction are determined. It is speculated that the degradation reaction of Methylene blue occurs in the boundary layer on the external surface of the particle electrodes, not in the aqueous solution.
