Abstract
Reticular chemistry, exemplified by metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), has proven invaluable in creating porous materials with finely tuned structures to address critical global energy and environmental challenges. In this context, the need for efficient carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and utilization has taken center stage. One promising approach involves the integration of MOFs into polymer matrix to develop mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). In this work, cerium-based MOFs (Ce-MOF) were selected due to their robust CO2 capture capabilities, while chitosan (CS) was chosen as the polymer matrix due to its reasonably good selectivity and balanced CO2 permeance for the development of MMMs for CO2/N2 (20/80 vol%) separation. A comprehensive suite of analytical techniques, including FTIR, XRD, FESEM, XPS, TGA, EDX, FETEM, and BET, was applied for precise characterization of both the MOF and MMMs. Various operational parameters, such as Ce-MOF content and temperature, were systematically explored to investigate the CO2 capture efficiency of the synthesized MMMs. The results revealed that the optimized Ce-MOF-embedded CS MMMs consistently outperformed the bare CS membranes.

Abstract
Fillers play a critical role in the performance of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). Microporous metal azolate frameworks (MAFs) are a subclass material of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Due to the uncoordinated nitrogen of the organic ligands, MAF-7 (SOD-[Zn(mtz)2], Hmtz = 3-methyl-1,2,4-triazole, window: d = 0.34 nm) shows excellent CO2 adsorption performance. In this work, Pebax 1657/MAF-7 MMMs were prepared by a sample solution casting method with MAF-7 particles as fillers for the first time. By means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), infrared radiation (IR), and thermogravimetry (TG), the compositional and structural properties of the mixed matrix membrane with different filler content were analyzed. The results show that the compatibility of MAF-7 and Pebax is good with a filler content of 5 wt.%. The pure gas testing showed that mixed matrix membrane has a high ideal CO2/N2 selectivity of 124.84 together with a better CO2 permeability of 76.15 Barrer with the optimized filler content of 5 wt.%. The obtained membrane showed 323.04% enhancement in selectivity of CO2/N2 and 27.74% increase in the permeability of CO2 compared to the pristine membrane at 25 °C and 3 bar. The excellent separation performance may be due to the ligands that can afford a Lewis base active site for CO2 binding with the uniform dispersion of MAF-7 particles in Pebax and the favorable interface compatibility. The obtained membrane overcomes the Robeson's upper bound in 2008 for CO2/N2 separation. This work provides a new strategy by utilizing MAFs as fillers with triazole ligand to enhance the gas separation performance of mixed matrix membranes.

Abstract
Enhancing the monodispersity and surface properties of nanoporous zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are crucial for maximizing their performance in advanced nanocomposites for separations. Herein, we developed an in situ method to synthesize monodispersed ZIF-8 nanocrystals with unique dopamine (DA) surface decoration layer (ZIF-8-DA) in an aqueous solution at room temperature. Interestingly, the in situ formation of the monodispersed ZIF-8-DA nanocrystals experiences a triple-stage crystallization process, resulting in a rhombic dodecahedron architecture, which is greatly different from the synthesis of conventional ZIF-8. The crystallinity and abundant microporosity of ZIF-8-DA nanocrystals is well maintained even with the DA surface decoration. Owing to the advanced surface compatibility and pore properties of ZIF-8-DA, ZIF-8-DA/Matrimid mixed-matrix membranes exhibit both higher gas permeability and selectivity than the pristine Matrimid polyimide membrane, which breaks out the traditional "trade-off" phenomena between permeability and selectivity.

Abstract
CO2 separation is an important process for a wide spectrum of industries including petrochemical, refinery and coal-fired power plant industries. The membrane-based process is a promising operation for CO2 separation owing to its fundamental engineering and economic benefits over the conventionally used separation processes. Asymmetric polymer–inorganic nanocomposite membranes are endowed with interesting properties for gas separation processes. The presence of nanosized inorganic nanofiller has offered unprecedented opportunities to address the issues of conventionally used polymeric membranes. Surface modification of nanofillers has become an important strategy to address the shortcomings of nanocomposite membranes in terms of nanofiller agglomeration and poor dispersion and polymer–nanofiller incompatibility. In the context of CO2 gas separation, surface modification of nanofiller is also accomplished to render additional CO2 sorption capacity and facilitated transport properties. This article focuses on the current strategies employed for the surface modification of nanofillers used in the development of CO2 separation nanocomposite membranes. A review based on the recent progresses made in physical and chemical modifications of nanofiller using various techniques and modifying agents is presented. The effectiveness of each strategy and the correlation between the surface modified nanofiller and the CO2 separation performance of the resultant nanocomposite membranes are thoroughly discussed.

Abstract
Sustainable and affordable supply of clean, safe, and adequate water is one of the most challenging issues facing the world. Membrane separation technology is one of the most cost-effective and widely applied technologies for water purification. Polymeric membranes such as cellulose-based (CA) membranes and thin-film composite (TFC) membranes have dominated the industry since 1980. Although further development of polymeric membranes for better performance is laborious, the research findings and sustained progress in inorganic membrane development have grown fast and solve some remaining problems. In addition to conventional ceramic metal oxide membranes, membranes prepared by graphene oxide (GO), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and mixed matrix materials (MMMs) have attracted enormous attention due to their desirable properties such as tunable pore structure, excellent chemical, mechanical, and thermal tolerance, good salt rejection and/or high water permeability. This review provides insight into synthesis approaches and structural properties of recent reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes which are used to retain dissolved species such as heavy metals, electrolytes, and inorganic salts in various aqueous solutions. A specific focus has been placed on introducing and comparing water purification performance of different classes of polymeric and ceramic membranes in related water treatment industries. Furthermore, the development challenges and research opportunities of organic and inorganic membranes are discussed and the further perspectives are analyzed.
