Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the effect of compression stockings on complaints, well-being, and sleep quality in pregnant women with restless legs syndrome. METHODS This randomized placebo-controlled study was conducted on 63 pregnant women (placebo group [PG]=31; experimental group [EG]=32) at the Perinatology Outpatient Clinic of a Health Research and Application Centre in Turkey. Pregnant women in the experimental group wore compression stockings when they got up in the morning for 3 weeks and took them off at bedtime. Placebo group women wore a placebo stocking. Data were collected using the restless legs syndrome Severity Rating Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the World Health Organization-5 Well-Being Index, and the Application Satisfaction Form on the 22nd day of the first interview. Statistical significance was accepted as p<0.05. RESULTS Post-test mean scores of both the experimental group and placebo group in the restless legs syndrome Severity Rating Scale (post-test:;8.87±5.27, 12.19±5.60; pre-test:;21.28±5.63, 21.0±5.61; p<0.05), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (post-test:;5.34±3.28, 6.12±3.12; pre-test:;10.15±4.23, 9.61±4.59; p<0.05), and Well-Being Index (post-test:;18.06±4.59, 19.00±4.47; pre-test:;12.71±5.85, 15.09±5.62; p<0.05) showed recovery according to the pre-tests. However, the post-test restless legs syndrome Severity Rating Scale of the experimental group was lower than that of the placebo group (p<0.05). The effect of their application started in 3.93±1.74 days on average in the experimental group, while it started in 5.09±1.55 days in the placebo group (p<0.05). CONCLUSION Both applications reduced the severity of restless legs syndrome in pregnant women and increased sleep quality and well-being. However, compression stockings were more effective in reducing restless legs syndrome severity. Nurses can use compression and placebo stockings in the care of pregnant women with restless legs syndrome. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER NCT05795868.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a disease from the spectrum of movement disorders, the prevalence of which increases significantly during pregnancy and is associated with poor sleep, a drop in daytime energy, and the development of psychological disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period. METHODS The IRLSS scale was used to determine the presence of RLS symptoms. The total test sample that included the tested and control groups was (n=390) subjects. The examined group consisted of pregnant women (n=260), and the control group consisted of female students (n=130). In total, 260 pregnant women were monitored 6 months after pregnancy. Three measurements were performed, first in the third trimester of pregnancy, second two months after delivery, third 6 months after delivery, while one cross-sectional measurement was performed for the control group. RESULTS The prevalence of RLS in pregnancy is highest in the third trimester and amounts to 26.5 %. In the postpartum period, a significant decrease in the prevalence of RLS was observed, measured two months after delivery (18.1 %). Postpartum, over time, a decrease in the prevalence of RLS was noticed, and six months after delivery it was (7.3 %), when it practically approached the prevalence of the control group (standard population) which was (6.2 %). CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of RLS is highest during the third trimester of pregnancy and decreases after delivery so that 6 months after delivery it approaches the prevalence of the standard population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Given the plausible mechanisms and the lacking of empirical evidence, the study aims to investigate how gestational sleep behaviors and the development of sleep disorders, such as restless legs syndrome, influence ultrasonographic measures of fetal growth. METHODS The study included 2457 pregnant women from the NICHD Fetal Growth Studies - Singletons (2009-2013), who were recruited between 8-13 gestational weeks and followed up to five times during pregnancy. Women were categorized into six groups based on their total sleep hours and napping frequency. The trajectory of estimated fetal weight from 10-40weeks was derived from three ultrasonographic measures. Linear mixed effect models were applied to model the estimated fetal weight in relation to self-reported sleep-napping behaviors and restless legs syndrome status, adjusting for age, race and ethnicity, education, parity, prepregnancy body mass index category, infant sex, and prepregnancy sleep-napping behavior. RESULTS From enrollment to near delivery, pregnant women's total sleep duration and nap frequency declined and restless legs syndrome symptoms frequency increased generally. No significant differences in estimated fetal weight were observed by sleep-napping group or by restless legs syndrome status. Results remained similar in sensitivity analyses and stratified analyses by women's prepregnancy body mass index category (normal vs. overweight/obese) or by infant sex. CONCLUSIONS Our data indicate that there is no association between sleep during pregnancy-assessed as total sleep duration and napping frequency, nor restless legs syndrome symptoms-and fetal growth from weeks 10 to 40 in healthy pregnant women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Restless arms syndrome (RAS) is the most common variant of restless legs syndrome (RLS), which is easy to be ignored in clinical practice due to the lack of specific diagnostic criteria. When effective therapeutic agents induced RAS and symptoms persisted after briefly observation, clinicians will face the challenge of weighing efficacy against side effects. CASE PRESENTATION A 67-year-old woman was admitted to a geriatric psychiatric ward with depression. Upon admission, the escitalopram dose was reduced from 15 mg to 10 mg per day, and the duloxetine dose was increased from 60 mg to 80 mg per day. The next night before bedtime, she developed itching and creeping sensations deep inside bilateral shoulders and arms, with the urge to move, worsening at rest, and alleviation after hammering. The symptoms persisted when escitalopram was discontinued. A history of RLS was confirmed. Treatment with 40 mg of duloxetine and 0.125 mg of pramipexole significantly improved depression, and the paresthesia disappeared, with no recurrence occurring 6 months after discharge. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS This case suggests that psychiatrists should pay attention to RLS variants when increasing doses of duloxetine. Long-term improvement can be achieved through dosage reduction combined with dopaminergic drugs instead of immediate discontinuation.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze signaling pathways associated with differentially expressed messenger RNAs in people with restless legs syndrome (RLS). Seventeen RLS patients and 18 controls were enrolled. Coding RNA expression profiling of 12,857 gene transcripts by next-generation sequencing was performed. Enrichment analysis by pathfindR tool was carried-out, with p-adjusted ≤0.001 and fold-change ≥2.5. Nine main different network groups were significantly dysregulated in RLS: infections, inflammation, immunology, neurodegeneration, cancer, neurotransmission and biological, blood and metabolic mechanisms. Genetic predisposition plays a key role in RLS and evidence indicates its inflammatory nature; the high involvement of mainly neurotropic viruses and the TORCH complex might trigger inflammatory/immune reactions in genetically predisposed subjects and activate a series of biological pathways-especially IL-17, receptor potential channels, nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells, NOD-like receptor, mitogen-activated protein kinase, p53, mitophagy, and ferroptosis-involved in neurotransmitter mechanisms, synaptic plasticity, axon guidance, neurodegeneration, carcinogenesis, and metabolism.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Vitamin D deficiency is associated with restless legs syndrome (RLS). However, a cutoff value for serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) level associated with RLS has yet to be clearly determined. We evaluated the association between 25(OH)D and RLS in pregnant women. METHODS Data from 203 pregnant women were evaluated using blood samples taken in the third trimester. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and ligand binding assays were used to measure 25(OH)D. RLS was diagnosed based on International Classification of Sleep Disorders, third edition, criteria. The cutoff value for serum 25(OH)D associated with RLS was explored using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and classification and regression tree (CART) analyses. RESULTS The results of liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (x) and ligand binding assays (y) for serum 25(OH)D in the RLS (n = 35, 17.2%) and non-RLS (n = 168) groups showed a relationship of y = -2.65 + 0.08x . The RLS group showed lower serum 25(OH)D and folate levels. ROC curve and CART analyses revealed cutoff values of 10-12.7 ng/mL and 6.6-7.2 ng/mL for 25(OH)D and folate, respectively. Of the 5 women with RLS symptoms persisting at a moderate-to-severe level after delivery, 4 had 25(OH)D levels < 10 ng/mL and all had folate levels < 6 ng/mL. CONCLUSIONS Vitamin D and folate deficiency were associated with RLS in pregnant women and may be associated with persistent moderate-to-severe postpartum RLS symptomatology; it is essential to examine associations with RLS while accounting for measurement methods and assay systems. Abstract
This review provides a summary for obstetricians, midwives, other health professionals and women contemplating pregnancy about the interactions between pregnancy and breathing during sleep. This review will first examine the normal physiological changes of pregnancy and their relationship to sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), and it will then summarise the current knowledge of SDB in pregnancy. Many changes in the respiratory system during pregnancy, particularly during the third trimester, can alter respiratory function during sleep, increasing the incidence and severity of SDB. These changes include increased ventilatory drive and metabolic rate, reduced functional residual capacity and residual volume, increased alveolar-arterial oxygen gradients and changes in the upper airway. The clinical importance of these changes during pregnancy is demonstrated by the increased incidence of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea hypopnoea syndrome. As SDB is associated with obesity, the increasing incidence of obesity pre-pregnancy will likely increase SDB during pregnancy over the next decade. If a physician is asked to review a pregnant patient, they should always consider the possibility of SDB.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common sensorimotor disorder during pregnancy. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of RLS and explore the associated risk factors and outcomes in Omani women in the first and third trimester and at 2-week postpartum. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 305 pregnant women visiting four health centers in Muscat between May 2018 and October 2020. A structured questionnaire was used and data were collected through review of electronic records and face-to-face interviews. The International RLS Study Group criteria were used to diagnose RLS. Participants were interviewed during their first trimester, their third trimester, and at their 2-week postpartum visit. Results were presented as means and standard deviations or percentages, as appropriate. To assess the association between RLS and various variables, unpaired t-test or McNemar's test were used, as appropriate. RESULTS: The mean age at baseline was 29.8 ± 5.28 years. The prevalence of RLS was significantly higher in the third trimester (41.0%) than in the first trimester (15.7%) and postpartum period (15.1%) (P < 0.001), although there was no significant difference in severity. Family history and personal history of RLS were the only independent correlates of RLS (P < 0.001 and 0.002, respectively). No associations were noted with pregnancy and neonatal outcomes or other comorbidities, including anemia. However, there was a significant relationship between the development of RLS and weight gain during pregnancy (P = 0.023). CONCLUSION: One in six pregnant Omani women may be at risk of RLS during the first trimester, while one in 2–3 may be at risk in the third trimester, particularly those with a personal or family history of RLS and those who gain >12 kg during pregnancy.

Abstract
AIM/INTRODUCTION Sleep problem is an important public health concern worldwide. We conducted a meta-analysis to quantitatively evaluate whether sleep duration associated with pregnancy outcomes, and the associations were modified by important characteristics of studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS Basing on PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) databases, we searched for the published literature related to maternal sleep duration and adverse pregnancy outcomes before 30 June, 2021. We conducted risk of bias assessment, subgroup analyses and sensitivity analysis. The relative risks (RR) or odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to estimate the pooled effects. RESULTS 5246 references were identified through databases searching, 41 studies were included in the study. Pregnant with short sleep duration had 1.81 times (95% CI 1.35-2.44, P < 0.001) risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The association between short sleep duration and the risk of gestational hypertension (GH), cesarean section (CS), low birthweight (LBW), preterm birth (PTB) and small for gestational age (SGA) were not significant (P > 0.05). Furthermore, long sleep duration was significantly correlated with GDM (OR 1.24. 95% CI 1.12-1.36, P < 0.001) and CS (OR 1.13. 95% CI 1.04-1.22, P = 0.004), while long sleep duration was not linked with GH, LBW, PTB and SGA (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Short / long sleep duration appeared to be associated with adverse pregnancy outcome, specifically with an increased risk of GDM. Sleep should be systematically screened in the obstetric population.
