Photo-induced metal-oxide biosensor for analysis of biofluids

Determining the concentration of biomarkers offers insights into the health condition and performance of the body. The majority of the biosensors applied to measuring biomarkers in biological fluids are electrochemical bases; however, these biosensors suffer from several key drawbacks. These include utilizing complex sensing materials to obtain desirable analytical performance, which prevents their practical application; and operation at a relatively high potential, which leads to inaccurate measurements due to the undesired oxidation of non-target molecules. A novel photo-induced chemiresistive biosensor is introduced here that addresses these challenges. A UV-induced ZnO nanorod (NR) chemiresistive biosensor is developed and applied to monitoring lactate and glucose, as model biomarkers in sweat. The detection mechanism of lactate based on its interaction with ZnO NRs is proposed. Furthermore, the effect of the electrode design and operating parameters, including irradiance, radiation wavelength, and applied potential, are evaluated. The highest response, the shortest response time, and complete recovery are obtained at 5.6 mW/cm2 irradiance of 365 nm and 0.1 V potential. The results indicate that the developed transduction platform utilizing a simple sensing layer is a promising technique with excellent analytical performance for detecting different biomarkers, thereby paving the way toward the emergence of photo-induced chemiresistive biosensors for real-life applications.

Solution blow spinning polysulfone-Aliquat 336 nanofibers: synthesis, characterization, and application for the extraction and preconcentration of losartan from aqueous solutions

Nanofibers are materials used in a wide range of applications due to their unique physicochemical properties. As an alternative to the most common method of its manufacturing (electrospinning) blow spinning has been used since it has greater production efficiency and simplicity. A wide variety of polymers is used for its preparation and can be modified to improve the interaction and selectivity toward specific analytes. Thereby nanofibers have been used for the extraction or removal of organic compounds such as drugs but there are still few reports of drug extractions like losartan. In this work polysulfone-Aliquat 336 nanofibers were prepared using the blow spinning method to extract and preconcentrate losartan. The studies showed that Aliquat 336 incorporation significantly improve the extraction of losartan with polysulfone fibers. Adsorption process was thermodynamically favorable with an adsorption capacity of 15.45 mg·g−1. Thus, it was possible to extract more than 92% of initial losartan using 10 mg of polysulfone-Aliquat 336 fibers (9 and 3.5% (w/v)), at pH 6 from deionized water and synthetic wastewater. Finally, losartan preconcentration was evaluated to facilitate its quantification using ultraviolet–visible spectrometry (UV-Vis), which allowed the determination of this drug at concentrations below the detection limit.

Recent developments and trends of automatic nucleic acid detection systems

Nucleic acid detection, widely used in clinical diagnosis, biological analysis, and environmental monitoring, is of great significance for disease diagnosis and basic research. With the outbreak of COVID-19, the demand for fast and high-throughput nucleic acid detection from large numbers of samples has increased sharply. Automated nucleic acid detection systems can meet these needs, and also play important roles in disease screening and infectious disease prevention and control. In this review, we introduce and compare the current mainstream nucleic acid automatic detection instruments and equipment, then discuss the future demands of nucleic acid detection.

Nanodrug Delivery Systems Modulate Tumor Vessels to Increase the Enhanced Permeability and Retention Effect

The use of nanomedicine for antitumor therapy has been extensively investigated for a long time. Enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect-mediated drug delivery is currently regarded as an effective way to bring drugs to tumors, especially macromolecular drugs and drug-loaded pharmaceutical nanocarriers. However, a disordered vessel network, and occluded or embolized tumor blood vessels seriously limit the EPR effect. To augment the EPR effect and improve curative effects, in this review, we focused on the perspective of tumor blood vessels, and analyzed the relationship among abnormal angiogenesis, abnormal vascular structure, irregular blood flow, extensive permeability of tumor vessels, and the EPR effect. In this commentary, nanoparticles including liposomes, micelles, and polymers extravasate through the tumor vasculature, which are based on modulating tumor vessels, to increase the EPR effect, thereby increasing their therapeutic effect.

Developing an integrated microfluidic and miniaturized electrochemical biosensor for point of care determination of glucose in human plasma samples

A cost-effective, point of care (POC) device based on highly oriented CNT arrays was developed as an electrochemical assay for real-time and sensitive detection of glucose in complex samples. A low-cost, microcontroller-based potentiostat consisting of Arduino Due and LMP9100-EVM was developed to perform electrochemical measurements such as cyclic voltammetry (CV) and amperometry. A syringe pump based on open-source electronics was designed to direct the flow through a microfluidic chip. Vertically aligned carbon nanotube (VACNT) sensor arrays, in combination with the miniature potentiostat and the syringe pumps, were utilized as a POC device for the rapid and accurate detection of glucose. The structure and morphology of samples were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (ATR-FTIR). CV as well as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was performed to investigate the electrochemical behavior of the electrode with respect to different diffusion regimes. The mediator-less biosensor had a limit of detection of 23 μM and sensitivity of 1462 μA mM^-1 cm^-2 and 1050 μA mM^-1 cm^-2 at the linear range of 1.2-7.8 mM and 7.8-11.2 mM, respectively. The presence of other biological compounds such as uric acid (UA) and ascorbic acid (AA) did not interfere with the detection of glucose. Finally, the designed POC device was successfully applied for the determination of glucose in human blood plasma samples.
