Facile synthesis of tubular magnetic fluorinated covalent organic frameworks for efficient enrichment of ultratrace polybrominated diphenyl ethers from environmental samples

Selective extraction and analysis of phenolic acids in herbal plants using Fe3O4@MXene@PEI aerogel

A magnetic MXene aerogel (Fe3O4@MXene@PEI) was prepared by crosslinking amino modified MXene with polyethyleneimine using epichlorohydrin as a cross-linker. Adsorption properties of Fe3O4@MXene@PEI aerogel for phenolic acids were evaluated by adsorption kinetics and isotherms experiments, showing that the high adsorption affinity was governed by multilayer chemisorption process. An efficient MSPE/HPLC method was developed for the determination of phenolic acids with excellent selectivity, good linearity (0.025-5.0 μg mL-1), low LODs (0.007-0.017 μg mL-1), and satisfactory recoveries (80.0-120.0 %). Moreover, the antioxidant activity of the Fe3O4@MXene@PEI purified compounds was superior to that of the conventional method as demonstrated by the results of scavenging experiments on 2,2 -diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging assay. Finally, 65 organic acids were identified in the Fe3O4@MXene@PEI treated honeysuckle extracts by UHPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap MS/MS analysis. The proposed sorbent exhibits remarkable promise for the selective separation and purification of organic acids from herbal products.

Fabrication of fluorinated triazine-based covalent organic frameworks for selective extraction of fluoroquinolone in milk

A novel fluorinated triazine-based covalent organic frameworks (F-CTFs) was designed and synthesized by using melamine and 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoroterephthalaldehydeas as organic ligands for selective pipette tip solid-phase extraction (PT-SPE) of amphiphilic fluoroquinolones (FQs). The competitive adsorption experiment and mechanism study were carried out and verified that this F-CTFs possesses favorable adsorption affinity for FQs. The abundant fluorine affinity sites endowed the F-CTFs high selectivity to FQs extraction through F-F interactions. The adsorption capacity of F-CTFs can reach up to 109.1 mg g-1 for enrofloxacin. The detailed characterization of the F-CTFs adsorbent involved the application of various techniques to examine its morphology and structure. Under optimized conditions, a method combining F-CTF-based PT-SPE with high-performance liquid chromatography (PT-SPE-HPLC) was established, which exhibited a broad linear range, excellent precision, and an impressively low limit of detection, and could be used for the determination of six FQs in milk, with LODs as low as 0.0010 μg mL-1. The recovery rates during extraction varied between 92.1% and 111.4%, exhibiting RSDs below 6.8% at different spiked concentrations.

Magnetic covalent organic frameworks as sorbents in the chromatographic analysis of environmental organic pollutants

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are featured with large specific surface areas, good thermal stability, and abundant pores. These properties are exactly what the sorbents used for extraction or adsorption of interest substances are desired with. While, the low density and hydrophobicity of COFs often makes them difficult to be dispersed evenly and recovered from the aqueous solution. Magnetic covalent organic frameworks (MCOFs) inherit magnetic property of the magnetic particles and porous structure of COFs. They have improved dispersity in aqueous solution and phase separation can be rapidly achieved via external magnetic fields. This review summarized the synthesis strategies for MCOFs, and their application in trace environmental organic pollutants analysis by chromatography techniques. The selection of COFs types and modification with active groups for a certain adsorption purpose is discussed, along with the exploration of adsorption mechanisms, which is beneficial for the design and synthesis of MCOFs.

Magnetic Covalent Organic Frameworks-Fundamentals and Applications in Analytical Chemistry

Magnetic covalent organic frameworks are new emerging materials which, besides many other applications, have found unique applications in analytical chemistry as separating media and adsorbents. They have outstanding features such as special morphology, chemical and thermal stability, high adsorption capacity, good magnetic response, high specific surface area, uniform pore size distribution, strong π-π interactions with analytes and high reusability that makes reported studies on their properties and applications increased in the recent years. After discussing the methods of synthesis of MCOFs with different geometries that cause their special physic-chemical properties, this review focuses on their high potential which has been exhibited in various applications in extraction and pre-concentration of different analytes such as organic compounds, heavy metal ions and biological samples. The article also highlights the applications of magnetic covalent organic frameworks in other chemical analysis such as adsorbent and being used in sensors.

The role of iron materials in the abiotic transformation and biotransformation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs): A review

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), widely used as flame retardants, easily enter the environment, thus posing environmental and health risks. Iron materials play a key role during the migration and transformation of PBDEs. This article reviews the processes and mechanisms of adsorption, degradation, and biological uptake and transformation of PBDEs affected by iron materials in the environment. Iron materials can effectively adsorb PBDEs through hydrophobic interactions, π-π interactions, hydrogen/halogen bonds, electrostatic interactions, coordination interactions, and pore filling interactions. In addition, they are beneficial for the photodegradation, reduction debromination, and advanced oxidation degradation and debromination of PBDEs. The iron material-microorganism coupling technology affects the uptake and transformation of PBDEs. In addition, iron materials can reduce the uptake of PBDEs in plants, affecting their bioavailability. The species, concentration, and size of iron materials affect plant physiology. Overall, iron materials play a bidirectional role in the biological uptake and transformation of PBDEs. It is necessary to strengthen the positive role of iron materials in reducing the environmental and health risks caused by PBDEs. This article provides innovative ideas for the rational use of iron materials in controlling the migration and transformation of PBDEs in the environment.

In situ fabrication of covalent organic frameworks on solid-phase microextraction probes coupled with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry for enrichment and determination of androgens in biosamples

Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) was developed for rapid and sensitive determination of endogenous androgens. The SPME probe is coated with covalent organic frameworks (COFs) synthesized by reacting 1,3,5-tri(4-aminophenyl)benzene (TPB) with 2,5-dioctyloxybenzaldehyde (C8PDA). This COFs-SPME probe offers several advantages, including enhanced extraction efficiency and stability. The analytical method exhibited wide linearity (0.1-100.0 µg L-1), low limits of detection (0.03-0.07 µg L-1), high enrichment factors (37-154), and satisfactory relative standard deviations (RSDs) for both within one probe (4.0-14.8%) and between different probes (3.4-12.7%). These remarkable performance characteristics highlight the reliability and precision of the COFs-SPME-ESI-MS method. The developed method was successfully applied to detect five kinds of endogenous androgens in female serum samples, indicating that the developed analytical method has great potential for application in preliminary clinical diagnosis.

Fluorine-functionalized covalent organic framework as efficient solid phase extraction sorbent for adsorption of aflatoxins in nuts

In this study, a new fluorine-functionalized covalent organic framework (F-COF) was designed and fabricated by the direct polycondensation of tris(4-aminophenyl)amine and 2,3,5,6-tetra-fluoroterephthaldehyde for the first time. F-COF exhibited a remarkably enhanced adsorption capability compared with that of the fluorine-free COF. The favorable adsorption of aflatoxins was attributed to multiple interactions including pseudo hydrogen bond, F-O, π-π, F-π interactions and hydrophobic interactions between F-COF and aflatoxins. By coupling F-COF based solid phase extraction with high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with fluorescence detector, a rapid and sensitive method for determining aflatoxins (aflatoxin B1, B2, G1 and G2) in nuts (peanuts and pistachios) was established. Under optimal conditions (35 mg F-COF, 100 mL sample solution, 3 mL min-1 as sample loading rate, pH<7, 0.2 mL acetonitrile as desorption solvent), the limits of detection for aflatoxins were 0.02-0.30 ng g-1. The linear range was 0.08-16.0 ng g-1 and the recoveries of the F-COF-based method were 83.5-114 % with relative standard deviations less than 8.0 %.

Poly(ionic liquid)s threaded into covalent organic framework for synergistic capture of polybrominated diphenyl ethers

The efficient enrichment of trace polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in environmental waters remains challenging for environmental monitoring and analysis. Herein, a covalent organic frameworks-poly(ionic liquid)s hybrid material (COF-γ-PIL) is synthesized by threading poly(1-vinyl-3-methylimidazolium bis ((trifluoromethyl) sulfonyl) imide) into a vinyl-decorated COF via photopolymerization. The resultant hybrid retains the crystallinity and porosity of COF, thus offering adequate adsorption sites for the targets. PIL threaded in COF facilitates the synergistic capture of target molecules within the hybrid through multiple interactions, including Van der Waals forces, weak hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions. As a proof of concept, COF-γ-PIL was utilized as the fiber coating for SPME of PBDEs in waters prior to their analysis via GC-MS. Excellent analytical results were achieved, with wide linearity (0.01-100 ng L-1), low limits of detection (0.0021-0.014 ng L-1), and satisfactory recoveries (78.6%-103.6%). The outstanding extraction performance can be ascribed to the extraordinary flexibility of the active fraction on linear polymers threaded in COF, which facilitates collaborative capture for target molecules, as revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work uncovers the microscopic mechanism for PBDEs capturing and provides new insights into the design of functionalized COF hybrids.

Urchin-like fluorinated covalent organic frameworks decorated fabric for effective self-cleaning and versatile oil/water separation

Oil contamination and industrial organic pollutants emission have been a serious problem affecting the ecological and residential environment. Membrane-based separation shows great application prospect due to its low-cost, environmental-friendly and easy operation. Therefore, the development of efficient oil-water separation membranes is highly desirable. Herein, a fabric filter with superwettability was prepared by coating urchin-like fluorinated covalent organic frameworks (COFs) on fabric, which was well utilized in filtering immiscible oil-water mixture and surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsion driven only by gravity for the first time. The as-prepared COF fabric filter (defined as fabric@u-FCOF) possessed many outstanding properties, including superhydrophobicity with the water contact angle of approximately 151.6°, satisfactory resistance for alkaline, acidic and saline environments, as well as superior mechanical durability under harsh conditions. Because of the super-micropore of fabric@u-FCOF and the nanopore in the COF coating, the obtained fabric@u-FCOF exhibited excellent performances in terms of separation efficiency and permeability, in which the oil flux was up to 16964 L·m-1·h-2 and separation efficiency for the mixed o-dichlorobenzene/water was higher than 99.4%. In addition, the fabric@u-FCOF also showed excellent self-cleaning performance due to the micro/nano hierarchical structure of its surface. These excellent properties make it an ideal candidate for applications of oil/water separation and water purification.

Magnetic Covalent Organic Framework Composites for Wastewater Remediation

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with high specific surface area, tailored structure, easy functionalization, and excellent chemical stability have been extensively exploited as fantastic materials in various fields. However, in most cases, COFs prepared in powder form suffer from the disadvantages of tedious operation, strong tendency to agglomerate, and poor recyclability, greatly limiting their practical application in environmental remediation. To tackle these issues, the fabrication of magnetic COFs (MCOFs) has attracted tremendous attention. In this review, several reliable strategies for the fabrication of MCOFs are summarized. In addition, the recent application of MCOFs as outstanding adsorbents for the removal of contaminants including toxic metal ions, dyes, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, and other organic pollutants is discussed. Moreover, in-depth discussions regarding the structural parameters affecting the practical potential of MCOFs are highlighted in detail. Finally, the current challenges and future prospects of MCOFs in this field are provided with the expectation to boost their practical application.

Online solid-phase extraction based on size-controllable spherical covalent organic framework for efficient determination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in foods

An analytical method of microspheric brominated covalent organic framework (Br-COF)-online solid-phase extraction integrated with high-performance liquid chromatography (online SPE-HPLC) was proposed for efficiently enriching six polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in foods. The Br-COF microspheres were facilely prepared with uniformity and dispersion by a size-controllable synthesis at the room temperature. Attributed to multiple interactions of the halogen bonding, Van der Waals forces, hydrophobic interaction along with size-matching effect, Br-COF performed satisfactory extraction capacity for PBDEs compared with commercial adsorbents. Five primary influencing factors were optimized, including loading solvent, loading flow rate, elution solvent, elution flow rate and elution volume. Under the optimal parameters, the implement displayed excellent linear ranges (0.5-500 ng mL^-1) and low detection limits (0.01-0.05 ng mL^-1). The relative recoveries in six spiked food samples ranged from 87.8 to 119.7 % with relative standard deviations below 10 %. This research estabished a promising platform for quantitatively determining trace PBDEs in complex foods.

Composite materials based on covalent organic frameworks for multiple advanced applications

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) stand for a class of emerging crystalline porous organic materials, which are ingeniously constructed with organic units through strong covalent bonds. Their excellent design capabilities, and uniform and tunable pore structure make them potential materials for various applications. With the continuous development of synthesis technique and nanoscience, COFs have been successfully combined with a variety of functional materials to form COFs-based composites with superior performance than individual components. This paper offers an overview of the development of different types of COFs-based composites reported so far, with particular focus on the applications of COFs-based composites. Moreover, the challenges and future development prospects of COFs-based composites are presented. We anticipate that the review will provide some inspiration for the further development of COFs-based composites.

Facile synthesis of Cu2+-immobilized magnetic covalent organic frameworks for highly efficient enrichment and sensitive determination of five phthalate monoesters from mouse plasma with HPLC-MS/MS

Development of a simple, highly selective, and sensitive analytical method for phthalate monoesters (mPAEs) remains a challenge due to the complexity of biological samples. To address this issue, Cu²⁺ immobilized magnetic covalent organic frameworks (Fe₃O₄@TtDt@Cu²⁺ composites) with core-shell structures were prepared to enhance the enrichment efficiency of mPAEs by a facile approach synthesis of COFs shells with inherent bifunctional groups on Fe₃O₄ NPs and further Cu²⁺ immobilization. The composites exhibit high specific surface area (348.1 m² g^-1), outstanding saturation magnetization (34.94 emu g^-1), ordered mesoporous structure, Cu²⁺ immobilization, and excellent thermal stability. Accordingly, a magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) pretreatment technique based on Cu²⁺ immobilized COF composites combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was established, and key parameters including the adsorbent amount, adsorption time, elution solvent, etc. were examined in detail. The developed analytical method showed wide linear ranges (10-8000 ng L^-1), low limit of detections (LODs, 2-10 ng L^-1), and good correlation coefficients (R² ≥ 0.9904) for the five mPAEs. Furthermore, the analytical method was also successfully applied to the highly sensitive detection of metabolite mPAEs in mouse plasma samples, indicating the promising application of the Fe₃O₄@TtDt@Cu²⁺ composites as a quick and efficient adsorbent in the sample pretreatment.

Three-dimensional hydroxylated covalent organic frameworks for solid phase extraction of glucocorticoids in environmental water samples

It is challenging to achieve the highly sensitive detection of glucocorticoids at ultratrace levels because of the abundant hydrophilic groups in their molecules and the complexity of environmental water sample matrices. Here, a highly crystalline three-dimensional hydroxylated covalent organic frameworks (denoted by COF-301) with tetra(4-anilyl)methane (TAM) and 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalaldehyde (DHTA) as building units was constructed and proposed as adsorbent for solid phase extraction (SPE) of glucocorticoids. Theoretical studies were conducted to elucidate the potential adsorption mechanism of glucocorticoids on the COF-301. The COF-301 based SPE combined with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry provides a promising approach for the preconcentration and determination of glucocorticoids residue in water samples. Good linearity with a correlation coefficient exceeding 0.9988, low limits of detection ranging from 0.024 to 0.075 ng L^-1 and relative standard deviations below 6.68% were achieved. The proposed method was successfully applied to analyze glucocorticoids residue in actual water samples, demonstrating the prospects of this method for the determination of trace glucocorticoids.

Recent advances and applications of magnetic covalent organic frameworks in food analysis

Recently, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been widely used to prepare magnetic adsorbents for food analysis due to their highly tunable porosity, large specific surface area, excellent chemical and thermal stability and large delocalised π-electron system. This review summarises the main types and preparation methods of magnetic COFs and their applications in food analysis for the detection of pesticide residues, veterinary drugs, endocrine-disrupting phenols and estrogens, plasticisers and other food contaminants. Furthermore, challenges and future outlook in the development of magnetic COFs for food analysis are discussed.

Fluoro-Functionalized Spherical Covalent Organic Frameworks as a Liquid Chromatographic Stationary Phase for the High-Resolution Separation of Organic Halides

The development of novel stationary phases with specific functionality is of great importance in chromatographic separation. Herein, we fabricated fluoro-functionalized spherical covalent organic frameworks (S_F-COFs) via a bottom-up strategy as stationary phases for high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Benefiting from the significant monodispersity, narrow size distribution, and high fluorine content, the S_F-COFs packed column showed high column efficiency and excellent resolution for the separation of the organic fluorides involving polyfluorobenzenes, polychlorobenzenes, polybromobenzenes, perfluoroalkyl methacrylates, and halogenated trifluorotoluenes, which cannot be separated on the fluorine-free spherical covalent organic frameworks packed column. Especially, the column efficiency of 20 100-38 500 plates/m was obtained for polyfluorobenzenes, and the relative standard deviations of the retention time for continuous 10 separations of polychlorobenzenes and polybromobenzenes were less than 0.98%. Furthermore, the prepared S_F-COFs packed column showed overwhelming superiority in the separation of organic halides compared with commercial C18 and pentafluorophenyl (PFP) packed columns. In addition, the compounds with different hydrophobicity or aromatic ring structure were also successfully separated on the S_F-COFs packed column. This work extended the application of spherical COFs and provided a new way to introduce specific functional groups into the COF-based stationary phase for HPLC.

Fluorine-Containing Covalent Organic Frameworks: Synthesis and Application

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a type of crystalline porous polymers that possess ordered structures and eternal pores. Because of their unique structural characteristics and diverse functional groups, COFs have been used in various application fields, such as adsorption, catalysis, separation, ion conduction, and energy storage. Among COFs, the fluorine-containing COFs (fCOFs) have been developed for special applications by virtue of special physical and chemical properties resulting from fluorine element, which is a nonmetallic halogen element and possesses strong electronegativity. In the organic chemistry field, introducing fluorine into chemicals enables those chemicals to exhibit many interesting properties, and fluorine chemistry increasingly plays an important role in the history of chemical development. The introduction of fluorine in COFs can enhance the crystallinity, porosity, and stability of COFs, making COFs having superior performances and some new applications. In this review, the synthesis and application of fCOFs are systematically summarized. The application involves photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide, photocatalytic water splitting, electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction, adsorption for different substances (H₂ , pesticides, per-/polyfluoroalkyl substances, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, bisphenols, and positively charged organic dye molecules), oil-water separation, energy storage (e.g., zinc-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries), and proton conduction. Perspectives of remaining challenges and possible directions for fCOFs are also discussed.

Recent Advances in the Application of Covalent Organic Frameworks in Extraction: A Review

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of emerging materials that are synthesized based on the covalent bonds between different building blocks. COFs possess unique attributes in terms of high porosity, tunable structure, ordered channels, easy modification, large surface area, and great physical and chemical stability. Due to these features, COFs have been extensively applied as adsorbents in various extraction modes. Enhanced extraction performance could be reached with modified COFs, where COFs are presented as composites with other materials including nanomaterials, carbon and its derivatives, silica, metal-organic frameworks, molecularly imprinted polymers, etc. This review article describes the recent advances, developments, and applications of COF-based materials being utilized as adsorbents in the extraction methods. The COFs, their properties, their synthesis approaches as well as their composite structures are reviewed. Most importantly, suggested mechanisms for the extraction of analyte(s) by COF-based materials are also discussed. Finally, the current challenges and future prospects of COF-based materials in extraction methods are summarized and considered in order to provide more insights into this field.

Covalent organic framework-based solid phase microextraction coupled with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry for sensitive screening and quantitative evaluation of carbamazepine and its metabolite in mice

Carbamazepine (CBZ) and its metabolite carbamazepine-10,11-epoxide (CBZEP) play vital role in the treatment of epilepsy. It is of great importance to develop a method for rapid and sensitive monitoring of CBZ and CBZEP due to their narrow therapeutic index. Herein, an imine-linked-based covalent organic framework was synthesized by using 1,3,5-tris (4-aminophenyl) benzene (TPB) and 1,3,5-triformylbenzene (TFB) (denoted as TPB-TFB-COF)，and applied as a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) probe for extracting CBZ and CBZEP. The TPB-TFB-COF showed large surface areas (371 m² g^-1), high regular porosity (1.23 nm) and extraordinary stability, which rendered it an ideal adsorbent for highly efficient enrichment of CBZ and CBZEP. Accordingly, an attractive strategy of the combination of the TPB-TFB-COF-based SPME probe and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry system (ESI/MS) was proposed for rapid screening and sensitive monitoring of CBZ and CBZEP. Under the optimized parameters, the developed method exhibited good linearity for CBZ and CBZEP in the range of 4-1000 μg L^-1 with correlation coefficient (r) no less than 0.9953, and the corresponding limits of detection (LODs) were 0.4 and 2.5 μg L^-1, respectively. Moreover, high enrichment factors (EFs, 202-351 folds) and satisfactory relative standard deviations (RSDs) of one probe (3.3-5.1%) and probe-to-probe (4.8-5.6%) were obtained. By using the proposed method, sensitive screening and quantitative evaluation of CBZ and CBZEP in mice whole blood and tissue homogenates were successfully achieved, indicating the promising applicability of the TPB-TFB-COF-SPME-AMIS as a powerful tool for drug monitoring.

[Recent advance of new sample preparation materials in the analysis and detection of environmental pollutants]

To successfully analyze complex samples and detect trace targets, sample pretreatment is essential. Efficient sample pretreatment techniques can remove or reduce interference from the sample matrix. It can also enrich analytes, thereby improving analytical accuracy and sensitivity. In recent years, various sample preparation techniques, including SPE, magnetic dispersion SPE, pipette tip SPE, stir bar extraction, fiber SPME, and in-tube SPME, have received increasing attention in environmental analysis and monitoring. The extraction efficiency mainly depends on the type of adsorbent material. Therefore, the development of efficient adsorbents is a crucial step toward sample preparation. This review summarizes and discusses the research advances in extraction materials over recent years. These extraction materials contain inorganic adsorbents, organic adsorbents, and inorganic-organic hybrid materials such as graphene, graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, inorganic aerogels, organic aerogels, triazinyl-functionalized materials, triazine-based polymers, molecularly imprinted polymers, covalent organic frameworks, metal-organic frameworks, and their derivatives. These materials have been applied to extract different types of pollutants, including metal ions, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, plasticizers, alkanes, phenols, chlorophenols, chlorobenzenes, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, perfluorosulfonic acids, perfluorocarboxylic acids, estrogens, drug residues, and pesticide residues, from environmental samples (such as water and soil samples). These sample preparation materials possess high surface areas, numerous adsorption sites, and allow extraction via various mechanisms, such as π-π, electrostatic, hydrophobic, and hydrophilic interactions, as well as hydrogen and halogen bond formation. Various sample pretreatment techniques based on these extraction materials have been combined with various detection methods, including chromatography, mass spectrometry, atomic absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and ion mobility spectroscopy, and have been extensively used for the determination of environmental pollutants. The existing challenges associated with the development of sample preparation techniques are proposed, and prospects for such extraction materials in environmental analysis and monitoring are discussed. Major trends in the field, including the development of efficient extraction materials with high enrichment ability, good selectivity, excellent thermal stability, and chemical stability, are discussed. Green sample pretreatment materials, environmentally friendly synthesis methods, and green sample pretreatment methods are also explored. Rapid sample pretreatment methods that can be conducted within minutes or seconds are of significant interest. Further, online sample pretreatment and automatic analysis methods have attracted increasing attention. Besides, real-time analysis and in situ detection have been important development directions, and are expected to be widely applicable in environmental analysis, biological detection, and other fields. Modern synthesis technology should be introduced to synthesize specific extraction materials. Controllable preparation methods for extraction materials, such as the in situ growth or in situ preparation of extraction coatings, will acquire importance in coming years. It will also be important to adopt high-performance materials from other fields for sample pretreatment. Organic-inorganic hybrid extraction materials can combine the advantages both organic materials and inorganic materials, and mutually compensate for any disadvantages. Extraction materials doped with nanomaterials are also promising. Although existing sample pretreatment techniques are relatively efficient, it is still imperative to develop novel sample preparation methods.

Sheathed in-situ room-temperature growth covalent organic framework solid-phase microextraction fiber for detecting ultratrace polybrominated diphenyl ethers from environmental samples

The extraction performance of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber is significantly influenced by coating materials and fabricating process. It is urgently needed for fabricating robust SPME fiber with facile preparation methods. Herein, a novel polyimide (PI) @ covalent organic framework (COF) synthesized by 1,3,5-Tris (4-aminophenyl) benzene (TPB) and 2,5-dimethoxyterephthalaldehyde (DMTP) fiber, named PI@TPB-DMTP fiber, was successfully fabricated with facile method at room temperature. Firstly, a COF crystals TPB-DMTP was in situ grown on stainless steel fiber, where the COF crystals was synthesized by the Schiff-base reaction between TPB and DMTP. Subsequently, the COF coating was covered with an ultrathin layer of PI through a simple dip-coating method to improve the fiber stability. By coupled PI@TPB-DMTP SPME fiber with gas chromatography-negative chemical ion-mass spectrometry (GC-NCI-MS), a sensitive analytical method was established for the determination of ultratrace polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in water sample. To achieve the best efficiency and sensitivity for the analysis of PBDEs, six potential influencing factors in extraction step and desorption step were optimized. Under optimized conditions, the established method showed high enhancement factors of 1470-3555, wide linear range of 0.05-100 ng L^-1, low detection limits of 0.0083-0.0190 ng L^-1, good repeatability for intra-day in the range of 3.71%-7.62% and inter-day in the range of 5.12%-8.81%, good reproducibility in the range of 6.83%-9.21%. The satisfactory recovery was ranged from 79.2% to 117.3% in determining real water samples. The excellent experimental performance was mainly attributed to the large specific surface area of TPB-DMTP, as well as the high permeability of porous PI film. The results demonstrated that the COF-based fiber showed great potential for analysis of PBDEs in complex environmental samples.

Room-temperature synthesis of amino-functionalized magnetic covalent organic frameworks for efficient extraction of perfluoroalkyl acids in environmental water samples

The novel amino-functionalized magnetic covalent organic framework nanocomposites (Fe₃O₄@[NH₂]-COFs) were fabricated at room temperature, which were explored as a magnetic adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). On the basis of the hydrophobic surfaces of magnetic nanocomposites and introduction of primary amines into the COFs shell, Fe₃O₄@[NH₂]-COFs displayed excellent enrichment capacity in "catching" ultratrace perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) from water samples because of the synergistic combination of hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions between PFAAs and Fe₃O₄@[NH₂]-COFs. Under the optimized pretreatment and instrumental parameters, the proposed pretreatment approach, which hybridized MSPE using Fe₃O₄@[NH₂]-COFs and HPLC-MS/MS, displayed favorable linearity (10-10,000 ng L^-1) with R² (0.9990-0.9999), low limits of detection (0.05-0.38 ng L^-1), and excellent repeatability (3.7-9.2%). Moreover, the established approach was successfully utilized to determine PFAAs in real water samples with spiked recoveries ranging from 72.1% to 115.4%. Results indicated that Fe₃O₄@[NH₂]-COFs would be a potential alternative for MSPE of PFAAs at ultra-low levels.

Novel Fluorinated 7-Hydroxycoumarin Derivatives Containing an Oxime Ether Moiety: Design, Synthesis, Crystal Structure and Biological Evaluation

A series of fluorinated 7-hydroxycoumarin derivatives containing an oxime ether moiety have been designed, synthesized and evaluated for their antifungal activity. All the target compounds were determined by ¹H-NMR, ¹³C-NMR, FTIR and HR-MS spectra. The single-crystal structures of compounds 4e, 4h, 5h and 6c were further confirmed using X-ray diffraction. The antifungal activities against Botrytis cinerea (B. cinerea), Alternariasolani (A. solani), Gibberella zeae (G. zeae), Rhizoctorzia solani (R. solani), Colletotrichum orbiculare (C. orbiculare) and Alternaria alternata (A. alternata) were evaluated in vitro. The preliminary bioassays showed that some of the designed compounds displayed the promising antifungal activities against the above tested fungi. Strikingly, the target compounds 5f and 6h exhibited outstanding antifungal activity against B. cinerea at 100 μg/mL, with the corresponding inhibition rates reached 90.1 and 85.0%, which were better than the positive control Osthole (83.6%) and Azoxystrobin (46.5%). The compound 5f was identified as the promising fungicide candidate against B. cinerea with the EC₅₀ values of 5.75 μg/mL, which was obviously better than Osthole (33.20 μg/mL) and Azoxystrobin (64.95 μg/mL). Meanwhile, the compound 5f showed remarkable antifungal activities against R. solani with the EC₅₀ values of 28.96 μg/mL, which was better than Osthole (67.18 μg/mL) and equivalent to Azoxystrobin (21.34 μg/mL). The results provide a significant foundation for the search of novel fluorinated 7-hydroxycoumarin derivatives with good antifungal activity.
