Abstract
Palladium-catalyzed carbonylation reactions, in the presence of nucleophiles, serve as very potent tools for the conversion of aryl and alkenyl halides or halide equivalents to carboxylic acid derivatives or to other carbonyl compounds. There are a vast number of applications for the synthesis of simple building blocks as well as for the functionalization of biologically important skeletons. This review covers the history of carbonylative coupling reactions in Hungary between the years 1994 and 2021.

Abstract
The palladium-catalyzed annulation of o-haloanilines with carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2), discovered by Wen-Zhen Zhang and co-workers, provides a convenient method to synthesize isatoic anhydrides. We explored the mechanism of this reaction, particularly the order of the reaction of CO and CO2 and the effect of the base, using density functional theory (DFT) calculations (ωB97X-D and M06). It was found that the base-assisted N-H bond activation through a concerted metalation-deprotonation (CMD) mechanism is a requisite for carboxylation, and the carboxylation proceeds via the nucleophilic attack of the (Pd)NH nitrogen on CO2. The results show that carbonylation occurs prior to carboxylation, because the facile and exergonic carbonylation greatly decreases the energies of the following intermediates and transition states. The mechanistic exploration of the alternative pathways (e.g., mono-carbonylation and carboxylation) and the comparison with the annulation mechanism of the o-iodobenzylamine substrate further demonstrate the perfect cooperation of CO and CO2 in constructing an anhydride moiety for o-haloanilines.

Abstract
Isoindolinone structure is an important privileged scaffold found in a large variety of naturally occurring as well as synthetic, biologically and pharmaceutically active compounds. Owing to its crucial role in a number of applications, the synthetic methodologies for accessing this heterocyclic skeleton have received significant attention during the past decade. In general, the synthetic strategies can be divided into two categories: First, direct utilization of phthalimides or phthalimidines as starting materials for the synthesis of isoindolinones; and second, construction of the lactam and/or aromatic rings by different catalytic methods, including C-H activation, cross-coupling, carbonylation, condensation, addition and formal cycloaddition reactions. Especially in the last mentioned, utilization of transition metal catalysts provides access to a broad range of substituted isoindolinones. Herein, the recent advances (2010-2020) in transition metal catalyzed synthetic methodologies via formation of new C-C bonds for isoindolinones are reviewed.

Abstract
Cyclocarbonylative Sonogashira reactions of ortho-ethynylbenzamides have been investigated. The process is carried out under CO pressure, in the presence of a very small amount of PdCl2(PPh3)2 (0.4 mol %) as a catalytic precursor and without the need for a Cu salt as the co-catalyst. 2-Ethynylbenzamide reacted successfully with iodoarenes bearing electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups, giving rise to different classes of compounds depending on the solvent used. On the contrary, N-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-ethynylbenzamide afforded exclusively polyfunctionalized isoindolinones with high stereoselectivity toward (E) isomers.

Abstract
Benzolactams with medium-sized rings were synthesized via the electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction of carbamoyl cations (R1R2N+═C═O) in good to high yields without dilution. These reactions were utilized to quantitatively examine the extent of retardation of medium-sized ring formation, compared to five- or six-membered ring formation. The order of reaction rates of formation of cyclic benzolactams is six- > five- > seven- > eight- > nine-membered ring at 25 °C. The present reaction provides a route to eight- and nine-membered benzolactams.

Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed highly selective intramolecular C-H aminocarbonylation of Br-functionalized phenethylamines in the presence of CO was achieved while leaving the C-Br bond unreacted to afford six-membered benzolactams with good to high yields. The remaining C-Br group in the cyclized product was successfully used as a reactive center for further functionalization through various palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions.

Abstract
A direct one-pot synthetic approach is described wherein cobalt(ii) phthalocyanine (CoPc) catalyzed reductive amination of 2-carboxybenzaldehyde, followed by intramolecular amidation afforded N-substituted isoindolinones. The method used diphenylsilane as reducing agent in ethanol. High chemoselectivity with excellent yield was obtained in most of the studied substrates.
