Abstract
By using glyoxylic acid monohydrate as a promoter, a wide range of substances containing a C-SO2 bond could be obtained from N-substituted maleimides or quinones and sodium sulfinates. The protocol features mild reaction conditions, short reaction time, and good atomic economics, which provides an alternative protocol for the α-sulfonylation of α,β-unsaturated ketones.

Abstract
Phosphanylnaphtho[2,1-d]oxazoles were synthesized successfully through one-pot phosphonation of naphthoquinone with diaryl(alkyl)phosphine oxides and Cu-catalyzed oxidative condensation with imines, followed by methylation and reduction. Upon applying 4-phosphanylnaphtho[2,1-d]oxazole as a P,N-chelating ligand, Pd-catalyzed C-N formation of amines or nitrobenzene as well as Ni-catalyzed C-C formation and the synthesis of quinoline proceeded successfully. The reaction was facilely scaled up to give N-benzylaniline 15a in a gram scale synthesis. This research provided a facile and convenient protocol to synthesize phosphanylnaphtho[2,1-d]oxazoles, which could be applied as an efficient P,N-ligand in transition-metal-catalyzed C-N and C-C formation to produce the desired products in high yields with wide functional group tolerance under small catalyst loading, solvent-free conditions in many reactions.

Abstract
A novel metal-free sulfonylation of arenes with N-fluorobenzenesulfonimide (NFSI) toward the synthesis of diarylsulfones has been developed. The reaction represents a rare example of sulfonylation reaction using NFSI as an efficient sulfonyl donor and the first example of acid-mediated sulfonylation of unactivated arenes with NFSI via selective cleavage of S-N bonds. This protocol provides a concise approach for the construction of pharmaceutically and biologically important diarylsulfones. Applications in the functionalization of natural products (e.g., β-estradiol) and in the synthesis of a key intermediate to an inhibitor of farnesyl-protein transferase, as well as in the gram-scale synthesis of the EPAC2 antagonist, are demonstrated.

Abstract
Organosulfur compounds have a pivotal role in the functionalities of many natural products, pharmaceuticals and organic materials. For these reasons, the search for new methodologies for the formation of carbon-sulfur bonds has been the object of intensive work for organic chemists. However, the proposed strategies suffer from various drawbacks, such as volatility, toxicity, and instability of the sulfur sources or the use of VOC solvents. In this review, we summarise the recent protocols which have the goal of obtaining sulfones, thioethers, thiazines, thiazepines and sulfonamides in an unconventional and/or sustainable way. The use of starting materials less invasive and toxic with respect to the traditional reagents, alternative solvents such as water, ionic liquids or deep eutectic solvents, the exploitation of ultrasound and electrochemistry, increasing the efficiency of the process, are reported. Moreover, representative reaction mechanisms are also discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The sulfonyl groups are general structural moieties present in agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and natural products. Recently, many efforts have been focused on developing efficient procedures for preparation of organic sulfones. MATERIALS AND METHODS Water, a proton source, is considered one of the most ideal and promising solvents in organic synthesis for its easy availability, low cost, nontoxic and nonflammable characteristics. From the green and sustainable point of view, more and more reactions are designed proceeding in water. OBJECTIVE The review focuses on recent advances of sulfonylation reactions proceeding in water. Sulfonylation reactions using sodium sulfinates, sulfonyl hydrazides, sulfinic acids, and sulfonyl chlorides as sulfonating agents were introduced in detail. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION In this review, sulfonylation reactions proceeding in water developed in recent four yields were presented. Sulfonylation reactions using water as solvent have attracted more and more attention because water is one of the most ideal and promising solvents in organic synthesis for its facile availability, low cost, nontoxic and nonflammable properties. CONCLUSION Numerous sulfonating agents such as sodium sulfinates, sulfonyl hydrazides, sulfinic acid, sulfonyl chlorides and disulfides are efficient for sulfonylation reactions which proceed in water.

Abstract
Sulfonyl azides have been widely used as sulfonamido, diazo, and azido donors, as well as all-nitrogen 1,3-dipoles donors in synthetic chemistry. Here, the sulfonyl azides were used as efficient sulfonyl donors, which is very unusual. Trifluoromethanesulfonic acid-induced formation of the sulfonyl cation reactive species from sulfonyl azides was developed and used for the first time to couple various inactivated arenes to prepare sulfones at ambient temperature.

Abstract
An efficient, catalyst-free strategy to construct diarylmethyl sulfones via 1,6-conjugate addition/aromatization/sulfonylation reaction of para-quinone methides with sulfonyl hydrazides under mild and environmentally benign conditions has been developed. The established protocol provided a highly chemo- and regioselectivity synthesis of a diverse array of novel diarylmethyl sulfones with excellent yields, and the reaction could be scaled up.
