Impact of genomic diversity in river ecosystems

Water temperature and chlorophyll a density drive the genetic and epigenetic variation of Vallisneria natans across a subtropical freshwater lake

Plant genetic diversity differs in habitat's oscillations, especially species distributed under heterogeneous environmental conditions. Freshwater ecosystems are vulnerable to biotic and abiotic impacts, which affect the genetic and epigenetic variations in aquatic plants. The extent of environmental heterogeneous attributes can be examined based on genetic and epigenetic variations. Such variations under environmental gradient can provide evidence for understanding the correlations between rapid environmental changes and species evolution. In this study, we performed amplified fragment polymorphism length and methylated-sensitive amplified polymorphism analysis to depict the genetic and epigenetic variations of Vallisneria natans in a subtropical lake. Results showed that this species maintained a relatively high genetic diversity (mean H E = 0.320, I = 0.474, PPL = 85.93%) and epigenetic variation (mean eH E = 0.282, eI = 0.428, ePPL = 83.91%). Water body temperature and chlorophyll a density were positively correlated to the genetic and epigenetic variations. The clonal generates of V. natans depicted a relative high methylation level and shew ancestral scenario between the genet and the second clonal generation. These findings revealed that species diversity is unevenly distributed under environmental heterogeneity, even at a fine geographic scale. Environmental characteristics in relation to temperature and chlorophyll a should be considered in the analysis of the genetic and epigenetic variations. Additionally, epigenetic variations between genets and ramets should be considered with caution when applied to analysis of other aquatic species.

A river runs through it: The causes, consequences, and management of intraspecific diversity in river networks

Rivers are fascinating ecosystems in which the eco-evolutionary dynamics of organisms are constrained by particular features, and biologists have developed a wealth of knowledge about freshwater biodiversity patterns. Over the last 10 years, our group used a holistic approach to contribute to this knowledge by focusing on the causes and consequences of intraspecific diversity in rivers. We conducted empirical works on temperate permanent rivers from southern France, and we broadened the scope of our findings using experiments, meta-analyses, and simulations. We demonstrated that intraspecific (genetic) diversity follows a spatial pattern (downstream increase in diversity) that is repeatable across taxa (from plants to vertebrates) and river systems. This pattern can result from interactive processes that we teased apart using appropriate simulation approaches. We further experimentally showed that intraspecific diversity matters for the functioning of river ecosystems. It indeed affects not only community dynamics, but also key ecosystem functions such as litter degradation. This means that losing intraspecific diversity in rivers can yield major ecological effects. Our work on the impact of multiple human stressors on intraspecific diversity revealed that-in the studied river systems-stocking of domestic (fish) strains strongly and consistently alters natural spatial patterns of diversity. It also highlighted the need for specific analytical tools to tease apart spurious from actual relationships in the wild. Finally, we developed original conservation strategies at the basin scale based on the systematic conservation planning framework that appeared pertinent for preserving intraspecific diversity in rivers. We identified several important research avenues that should further facilitate our understanding of patterns of local adaptation in rivers, the identification of processes sustaining intraspecific biodiversity-ecosystem function relationships, and the setting of reliable conservation plans.

Evolution as an ecosystem process: insights from genomics

Evolution is a fundamental ecosystem process. The study of genomic variation of organisms can not only improve our understanding of evolutionary processes, but also of contemporary and future ecosystem dynamics. We argue that integrative research between the fields of genomics and ecosystem ecology could generate new insights. Specifically, studies of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, evolutionary rescue, and eco-evolutionary dynamics could all benefit from information about variation in genome structure and the genetic architecture of traits, whereas genomic studies could benefit from information about the ecological context of evolutionary dynamics. We propose new ways to help link research on functional genomic diversity with (reciprocal) interactions between phenotypic evolution and ecosystem change. Despite numerous challenges, we anticipate that the wealth of genomic data being collected on natural populations will improve our understanding of ecosystems.

The Ecology and Evolution of Stoichiometric Phenotypes

Ecological stoichiometry has generated new insights into how the balance of elements affects ecological interactions and ecosystem processes, but little is known about the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of stoichiometric traits. Understanding the origins and drivers of stoichiometric trait variation between and within species will improve our understanding about the ecological responses of communities to environmental change and the ecosystem effects of organisms. In addition, studying the plasticity, heritability, and genetic basis of stoichiometric traits might improve predictions about how organisms adapt to changing environmental conditions, and help to identify interactions and feedbacks between phenotypic evolution and ecosystem processes.

The hidden side of plant invasions: the role of genome size

The ecological role of genome size in plant biology, biogeography, and morphology has garnered increasing attention as the methods and technology associated with measuring cytological characteristics have become more reliable and accessible. However, how plant genome size influences plant invasions and at what stage in the invasion this influence occurs have been little explored. Several large-scale analyses of published data have yielded valuable interspecific comparisons, but experimental studies that manipulate environmental factors are needed, particularly below the species level, to fully understand the role that genome size plays in plant invasion. In this review, we summarize the available knowledge, discuss the integration of genome size data into invasion research, and suggest how it can be applied to detect and manage invasive species. We also explore how global climate change could exert selective pressures on plant populations with varying genome sizes, thereby increasing the distribution range and invasiveness of some populations while decreasing others. Finally, we outline avenues for future research, including considerations of large-scale studies of intraspecific variation in genome size of invasive populations, testing the interaction of genome size with other factors in macroecological analyses of invasions, as well as the role this trait may play in plant-enemy interactions.
