Abstract
Various sensory perceptions drive the quality and typicality of wines, with the volatile profile playing a fundamental role in the characteristics of odor, aroma and consequently flavor, which combines the smell (odor and aroma), taste, and trigeminal sensations. Efforts have been made in both the field of instrumental and sensory analysis to understand the relationship of volatile compounds with sensory attributes in omics approaches. Gas chromatography (monodimensional and two-dimensional (heartcutting and comprehensive)) associated with mass spectrometry (GC/MS, GC-GC/MS and GCxGC/MS) and chemometric tools have contributed to foodomics analyses, specifically those linked to metabolomics/volatilomics. These tools, along with the elucidation of sensory properties (sensomics), lead to advanced results in the field of flavoromics. They also help to define the best practices in both vineyard management and winemaking that enable the production of high-quality wines. The objective of this review is to report the challenges of determining the volatile profile of wines, pointing out the ways that can be followed in successful identification and quantification of volatile compounds. The state of the art of sensory evaluation methods is also addressed, providing information that helps in choosing the most appropriate sensory method to be conducted with chromatographic analysis to achieve more in-depth results in the field of flavoromics.

Abstract
Veterinary drugs used in animal husbandry raise public health concerns due to their residues in the bodies of animals. This study employs a simple and quick sample preparation technique, in-tube solid phase extraction, to extract drug residues from foodstuffs, including eggs, honey, and water. This technique utilizes the synergy of graphitic-based materials and polyurethane sponges (PU) combined through dip coating method to make reusable sorbents for extracting drugs, including amoxicillin, paracetamol, ciprofloxacin, and cefixime. These prepared sorbents were characterized using FTIR, SEM, and XRD. HPLC analysis assessed the extraction efficiency, considering various parameters such as analyte concentration, sample solution pH, extraction time, type of eluting solvent, and graphitic-based polyurethane sponge reusability and stability. The proposed method exhibited a linear response for all three sorbents in the range of 0.03-1000 µg mL-1, with LOD 0.03-1.60 µg mL-1 and LOQ 0.18-4.84 µg mL-1. The % RSD ranged from 1.3 to 9.3 %, with recoveries of up to 98.42 %.

Abstract
Optimization of seven parameters of stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) on mulberry volatile components for the first time. A total of 347 volatile components were identified and quantified in 14 mulberry varieties, predominantly encompassing esters, aldehydes, terpenoids, hydrocarbons, ketones, alcohols, heterocyclics, acids, and phenols. Hexanal and (E)-2-hexenal were the dominant volatiles. Furthermore, 79 volatile compounds characterized by odor activity values (OAVs) > 1 were identified, making a significant contribution to the distinctive mulberry flavor. "Green" notes were the most intense, followed by "fatty" and "fruity". Utilizing odor ring charts, the volatile flavor characteristics of the 14 mulberry varieties could be intuitively distinguished. This study not only established a viable methodology for differentiating mulberry varieties but also laid a theoretical foundation for the quality evaluation and variety breeding of mulberry flavor.

Abstract
The development of advanced functional nanomaterials for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) remains an imperative aspect of sample pretreatment. Herein, we introduce a novel SPME fiber consisting of graphene fibers modified with ordered mesoporous carbon nanotubes arrays (CNTAs) tailored for the determination of benzene series in oilfield wastewater, which is synthesized by an ionic liquid-assisted wet spinning process of graphene nanosheets, followed by a precisely controlled growth of metal-organic framework and subsequent pyrolysis treatment. The resulting robust microfiber structure resembles a "hairbrush" configuration, with a crumpled graphene fiber "stem" and high-order mesoporous CNTAs "hairs". This unique architecture significantly enhances the SPME capacity, as validated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The hairbrush-like nanocarbon assembled microfibers possess structural characteristics, a high specific surface area, and numerous binding sites, offering efficient enrichment of benzene series compounds in oilfield wastewater, including benzene, ethylbenzene, m-xylene, p-xylene, and toluene. Our analysis demonstrates that these microfibers exhibit broad linear ranges (0.2-600 μg L-1), low detection limits (0.005-0.03 mg L-1), and excellent repeatability (3.2-5.5% for one fiber, 2.1-6.7% for fiber-to-fiber) for detection. When compared to commercial alternatives, these hairbrush-like nanocarbon-assembled microfibers exhibit significantly enhanced extraction efficiency for benzene series compounds.

Abstract
The displacement effect can be an issue for the quantitation of analytes with low affinity towards the extraction phase in solid-phase microextraction (SPME) for food samples that have low level of binding matrix or high level of hydrophobic compounds. In this communication, automated sequential SPME-GC-MS strategy was developed for addressing the displacement issue. The SPME thin film with PDMS coating was firstly used for the extraction of hydrophobic components in the sample which cause displacement and then SPME fiber with DVB/CAR/PDMS coating was applied in the second step for the extraction of the remain compounds. This new strategy was investigated by using 10 key food odorants as target analytes and tested in commercial beer samples. The results suggested that sequential SPME can decrease the displacement effect and improve the extraction efficiency for polar analytes.

Abstract
Solid-phase microextraction and comprehensive multidimensional gas chromatography represent two milestone innovations that occurred in the field of separation science in the 1990s. They have a common root in their introduction and have found a perfect coupling in their evolution and applications. This review will focus on food analysis, where the paradigm has changed significantly over time, moving from a targeted analysis, focusing on a limited number of analytes at the time, to a more holistic approach for assessing quality in a larger sense. Indeed, not only some major markers or contaminants are considered, but a large variety of compounds and their possible interaction, giving rise to the field of foodomics. In order to obtain such detailed information and to answer more sophisticated questions related to food quality and authenticity, the use of SPME-GC × GC-MS has become essential for the comprehensive analysis of volatile and semi-volatile analytes. This article provides a critical review of the various applications of SPME-GC × GC in food analysis, emphasizing the crucial role this coupling plays in this field. Additionally, this review dwells on the importance of appropriate data treatment to fully harness the results obtained to draw accurate and meaningful conclusions.

Abstract
A requisite to improving the taste and odor attributes of farmed fish is the availability of accurate and practical analytical methods to quantify 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) and geosmin (GSM). Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) enables reliable measurement of nanogram per liter quantities of MIB and GSM in water. In contrast, direct headspace (HS)-SPME of biological matrices with variable proximate compositions can increase bias and uncertainty in off-flavor determinations. Analytical recovery plays a crucial role in the accurate determination of MIB and GSM in fish, and this study investigates strategies to maximize and account for this recovery factor. MIB and GSM values in off-flavor catfish and trout were measured using direct HS-SPME and distillation as sample preparation techniques. Trout samples prepared by distillation yielded 10-fold higher GSM recoveries than those from direct HS-SPME (31% versus 3%). A stable isotope dilution method (SIDM) was implemented by routinely spiking samples with known quantities of deuterium-labeled MIB and GSM, allowing for the correction of sample-to-sample recovery deviations. SIDM-determined GSM values generated recoveries of 106 and 95% for direct HS-SPME and distilled trout, respectively. Aspects of the strategies and techniques presented can be incorporated into existing analytical methods to improve the accuracy and sample throughput. Particularly, routine inclusion of SIDM in the evaluation of MIB and GSM can facilitate identification of reliable practices to control off-flavors in aquaculture.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The practical application of moisture sensitive metal organic frameworks (MOFs) in extraction technology faces challenges related to competitive adsorption and water stability. The target analytes cannot be effectively extracted under humid conditions due to the competitive moisture adsorption and/or framework structure collapse of MOFs. In this study, the microporous organic networks (MONs) were synthesized through Sonogashira coupling reaction to use for hydrophobic modification on the surface of MOF-199. RESULTS The MOF-199@MON as coating was deposited on stainless steel wires for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of benzene series (BTEX) in aqueous environments. Under the optimal extraction conditions, the MOF-199@MON coated fiber for SPME coupled with GC-MS for the determination of BTEX gave the linear range of 0.5-500 μg L-1, the limit of detections (LODs, S/N = 3) of 0.01-0.04 μg L-1, the limit of quantifications (LOQs, S/N = 10) of 0.04-0.12 μg L-1, the enhancement factors of 3567-4878, and the intra-day, inter-day and fiber-to-fiber precisions (relative standard deviations, RSDs) of 1.0-9.8, 1.9-7.9 and 4.5-9.5 %, respectively. The developed method was successfully applied to the analysis of BTEX in water samples with the recoveries of 71.0 %-113 %. SIGNIFICANCE This work reveals the home-made SPME fibers have a long service life (the extraction efficiency of fiber decreased by only 7.26 %-13.14 % after 100 cycles). The potential of MON functionalized MOFs as effective adsorbents for the SPME of pollutants in the water environment.

Abstract
The formation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in dry-cured ham is a result of different biochemical and enzymatic processes. Moreover, accurately quantifying these VOCs is challenging since ham is a complex matrix, which contains compounds from various chemical families and a wide range of volatilities of different molecular masses. In this study, we systematically optimized and validated an analytical method for quantifying VOCs in dry-cured ham using headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Optimal SPME conditions were determined through both an experimental procedure (one-factor-at-a-time) and response surface methodology (RSM), revealing that a 60-min equilibration at 70°C, a 60-min extraction at the same temperature, and a 4-min desorption time at 250°C provided the most favorable results. To enhance quantitation, twelve multiple internal standards (ISTDs) were employed to address and improve the quantitation of the 12 VOCs. Method validation covered aspects of linearity, limits of detection (LOD: 0.03-1.13 mg kg-1), limits of quantitation (LOQ: 0.09-3.41 mg kg-1), and working ranges (0.01-19.1 mg kg-1). The practical application of this optimized method was demonstrated by analyzing dry-cured ham samples (n = 4), sourced from the Slovenian market. The initial statistical evaluation indicates that different types of dry-cured hams can be differentiated (with an 83.1% of accuracy) according to their aromatic profile. However, a larger sample size would be required to provide a more comprehensive assessment.

Abstract
The emerging sample pretreatment technique of magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) has drawn the attention of researchers owing to its advantages of less reagent consumption, fast separation/enrichment process, high adsorption capacity, and simple operation. This paper presents a review of synthesis techniques, classification, and analysis procedures for MSPE in the detection of heavy metals in food. Magnetic adsorbents derived from silica, metal oxides, carbon, polymers, etc., are applied for the detection of heavy metals in food. Then, the recent development of the technology of MSPE for the analysis of heavy metal extraction in food is summarized in detail. Finally, the future outlook for the improvement of MSPE is also discussed.

Abstract
This review presents an outline of the application of the most popular sorbent-based methods in food analysis. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is discussed based on the analyses of lipids, mycotoxins, pesticide residues, processing contaminants and flavor compounds, whereas solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is discussed having volatile and flavor compounds but also processing contaminants in mind. Apart from these two most popular methods, other techniques, such as stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), high-capacity sorbent extraction (HCSE), and needle-trap devices (NTD), are outlined. Additionally, novel forms of sorbent-based extraction methods such as thin-film solid-phase microextraction (TF-SPME) are presented. The utility and challenges related to these techniques are discussed in this review. Finally, the directions and need for future studies are addressed.

Abstract
Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is a sample preparation technique which utilizes small amounts of an extraction phase for the extraction of target analytes from investigated sample matrices. Its simplicity of use, relatively short sample processing time, and fiber reusability have made SPME an attractive choice for many analytical applications. SPME has been widely applied to the sampling and analysis of environmental, food, aromatic, metallic, forensic, and pharmaceutical samples. Solid phase microextraction is used in horticultural crops, for example, to determine water and soil contaminants (pesticides, alcohols, phenols, amines, herbicides, etc.). SPME is also used in the food industry to separate biologically active substances in food products for various purposes, for example, disease prevention, determining the smell of food products, and analyzing tastes. SPME has been applied to forensic analysis to determine the alcohol concentration in blood and that of sugar in urine. This method has also been widely used in pharmaceutical analysis. It is a solvent-free sample preparation technique that integrates sampling, isolation, and concentration. This review focuses on recent work on the use of SPME techniques in the analysis of food and horticultural crops.

Abstract
Long sample extraction time is usually necessary in the analysis of volatile flavour compounds to achieve high extraction efficiency. However, the long extraction time reduces sample throughput, which results in waste of labour and energy. Therefore, in this study, an improved headspace-stir bar sorptive extraction was developed to extract volatile compounds with varying polarities in a short time. With the aim of achieving high throughput, extraction conditions were selected and optimised based on the combinations of different extraction temperatures (80-160 °C), extraction times (1-61 min), and sample volumes (50-850 μL) through the response surface methodology with Box-Behnken design. After obtaining the preliminary optimal conditions (160 °C, 25 min, and 850 μL), the effect of cold stir bars with shorter extraction time on the extraction efficiency was evaluated. The cold stir bar improved the overall extraction efficiency with better repeatability, and the extraction time was further shortened to 1 min. Then, the effects of different ethanol concentrations and salt additions (sodium chloride or sodium sulfate) were studied, and 10% ethanol concentration with no salt addition provided the highest extraction efficiency for most compounds. Finally, it was verified that the high-throughput extraction condition was feasible for the volatile compounds spiked in a honeybush infusion.

Abstract
In the present work, the potential benefit of using multi-cumulative trapping headspace extraction was explored by comparing the results using solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coated with divinylbenzene/carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane and a probe-like tool coated with polydimethylsiloxane. The efficiency of a single 30-min extraction, already explored in previous work, was compared with that of multiple shorter extractions. We evaluated three different conditions, i.e., three repeated extractions for 10 min each from different sample vials (for both the probe-like tool and SPME) or from the same vial (for SPME) containing brewed coffee. The entire study was performed using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The two-dimensional plots were aligned and integrated using a tile-sum approach before any statistical analysis. A detailed comparison of all the tested conditions was performed on a set of 25 targeted compounds. Although a single 30-min extraction using the probe-like tool provided a significantly higher compound intensity than SPME single extraction, the use of multiple shorter extractions with SPME showed similar results. However, multiple extractions with the probe-like tool showed a greater increase in the number of extracted compounds. Furthermore, an untargeted cross-sample comparison was performed to evaluate the ability of the two tested tools and the different extraction procedures in differentiating between espresso-brewed coffee samples obtained from capsules made of different packaging materials (i.e., compostable capsules, aluminum capsules, aluminum multilayer pack). The highest explained variance was obtained using the probe-like tool and multiple extractions (91.6% compared to 83.9% of the single extraction); nevertheless, SPME multiple extractions showed similar results with 88.3% of variance explained.

Abstract
The growing world population, combined with scarcities of agricultural land, water, forest, fisheries, and biodiversity resources, makes it necessary to search for alternative sources of nutrients. For this reason, in recent years, edible insects have been introduced into the diet, even in areas where entomophagy is not traditional. In light of this, the present study aims at characterizing the aromatic profile of three edible insects flours: cricket (Acheta domesticus, CP), buffalo worm (Alphitobius diaperinus, BW), and mealworm (Tenebrio molitor, MW). This goal has been achieved by means of an (HS)-SPME/GC-MS strategy. 67 compounds have been tentatively identified; of these, 27 are present only in the CP and BW flours, while 10 are common in all three flours. The compound with the highest peak's relative area in gas chromatograms of CP and BW flours is hexadecanoic acid, while in MW it is 1-heptylpyrrolidin-2-one. In general, we have observed that CP and BW flours have 37 compounds in common, and their volatile compositions along with their profiles are more similar to each other than to MW profile.

Abstract
The aboveground and root parts of Onosma mutabilis were extracted using subcritical water and the process was optimized with response surface methodology. The composition of the extracts was determined by chromatographic methods and compared to that of conventional maceration of the plant. The optimum total phenolic contents for the aboveground part and the roots were 193.9 and 174.4 μg/g, respectively. These results were achieved at a subcritical water temperature of 150 °C, an extraction time of 180 min, and a water/plant ratio of 0.1, for both parts of the plant. Principal component analysis revealed that the roots contained mainly phenols, ketones, and diols, with the aboveground part mostly alkenes and pyrazines, whereas the extract from maceration contained mainly terpenes, esters, furans, and organic acids. The quantification of selected phenolic substances showed that subcritical water extraction compared favorably to maceration, especially with respect to pyrocatechol (1062 as compared to 10.2 μg/g) and epicatechin (1109 as compared to 23.4 μg/g). Furthermore, the roots of the plant contained twice as much of these two phenolics compared to the aboveground part. Subcritical water extraction of O. mutabilis is an environmentally friendly method that can extract selected phenolics at higher concentrations compared to maceration.

Abstract
Sample preparation remains both a challenging and time-consuming process in the field of bioanalytical chemistry. Many traditional techniques often require multi-step processes, which can introduce additional errors to the analytical method. Given the complexity of many biological matrices, thorough analyte extraction presents a major challenge to researchers. In the present study, a headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled with a GC/Q-ToF-MS method, was developed to quantify in vitro metabolism of β-caryophyllene by both human liver microsome (HLM) and S9 liver fractions. Validation of the method was demonstrated both in terms of linearity (R2 = 0.9948) and sensitivity with a limit of detection of 3 ng/mL and a limit of quantitation of 10 ng/mL. In addition, the method also demonstrated both inter- and intra-day precision with the relative standard deviation (RSD) being less than 10% with four concentrations ranging from 50–500 ng/mL. Since this method requires no solvents and minimal sample preparation, it provides a rapid and economical alternative to traditional extraction techniques. The method also eliminates the need to remove salts or buffers, which are commonly present in biological matrices. Abstract
Developing effective and green methods for food analysis and separation has become an urgent issue regarding the ever-increasing concern of food quality and safety. Ionic liquids (ILs) are a new chemical medium and soft functional material developed under the framework of green chemistry and possess many unique properties, such as low melting points, low-to-negligible vapor pressures, excellent solubility, structural designability and high thermal stability. Combining ILs with extraction techniques not only takes advantage of ILs but also overcomes the disadvantages of traditional extraction methods. This subject has attracted intensive research efforts recently. Here, we present a brief review of the current research status and latest developments regarding the application of IL-assisted microextraction, including dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME) and solid-phase microextraction (SPME), in food analysis and separation. The practical applications of ILs in determining toxic and harmful substances in food specimens with quite different natures are summarized and discussed. The critical function of ILs and the advantages of IL-based microextraction techniques over conventional extraction techniques are discussed in detail. Additionally, the recovery of ILs using different approaches is also presented to comply with green analytical chemistry requirements.

Abstract
We hypothesised that QuEChERS could be successfully applied to the extraction of bitter acids and xanthohumol from hops, which would be less time consuming, cheaper, and more eco-friendly by the severe reduction of solvent use. High performance liquid chromatography was used to separate the compounds after extraction and quantitation was evaluated against standard calibration curves for bitter acids prepared from an International calibration extract (ICE-4) and an authentic standard of xanthohumol. The standard QuEChERS method was compared to mini and micro-versions including clean-up and spiking procedures. The quantitative analyzes indicate the applicability of the QuEChERS method for the quantitation of bitter acids compared to Soxhlet extraction. The statistical data confirm reproducibility of the total alpha- and beta- acids measured by the standard method and the modified mini- and micro-QuEChERS procedures. Our hypothesis is supported by the data described and is consistent with other previous methods described in the literature.

Abstract
Mycotoxin contamination is a globally concerned problem for food and agricultural products since it may directly or indirectly induce severe threats to human health. Sensitive and selective screening is an efficient strategy to prevent or reduce human and animal exposure to mycotoxins. However, enormous challenges exist in the determination of mycotoxins, arising from complex sample matrices, trace-level analytes, and the co-occurrence of diverse mycotoxins. Appropriate sample preparation is essential to isolate, purify, and enrich mycotoxins from complicated matrices, thus decreasing sample matrix effects and lowering detection limits. With the cross-disciplinary development, new solid-phase extraction strategies have been exploited and integrated with nanotechnology to meet the challenges of mycotoxin analysis. This review summarizes the advance and progress of solid-phase extraction techniques as the methodological solutions for mycotoxin analysis. Emphases are paid on nanomaterials fabricated as trapping media of SPE techniques, including carbonaceous nanoparticles, metal/metal oxide-based nanoparticles, and nanoporous materials. Abstract
The human senses shape the life in several aspects, namely well-being, socialization, health status, and diet, among others. However, only recently, the understanding of this highly sophisticated sensory neuronal pathway has gained new advances. Also, it is known that each olfactory receptor cell expresses only one type of odorant receptor, and each receptor can detect a limited number of odorant substances. Odorant substances are typically volatile or semi-volatile in nature, exhibit low relative molecular weight, and represent a wide variety of chemical families. These molecules may be released from foods, constituting clouds surrounding them, and are responsible for their aroma properties. A single natural aroma may contain a huge number of volatile components, and some of them are present in trace amounts, which make their study especially difficult. Understanding the components of food aromas has become more important than ever with the transformation of food systems and the increased innovation in the food industry. Two-dimensional gas chromatography and time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-ToFMS) seems to be a powerful technique for the analytical coverage of the food aromas. Thus, the main purpose of this review is to critically discuss the potential of the GC × GC-based methodologies, combined with a headspace solvent-free microextraction technique, in tandem with data processing and data analysis, as a useful tool to the analysis of the chemical aroma clouds of foods. Due to the broad and complex nature of the aroma chemistry subject, some concepts and challenges related to the characterization of volatile molecules and the perception of aromas will be presented in advance. All topics covered in this review will be elucidated, as much as possible, with examples reported in recent publications, to make the interpretation of the fascinating world of food aroma chemistry more attractive and perceptive.

Abstract
The thin films used in headspace thin-film microextraction (HS-TFME) enable higher sensitivity and superior extraction rates compared to other microextraction approaches, largely due to their greater surface area-to-volume ratio and extraction-phase volume. Nonetheless, analytes exhibiting a low affinity for the headspace and/or large partitioning between the extraction phase and headspace will still require more time to reach equilibrium. In this paper, we detail the development of a new method, termed as vacuum-assisted HS-TFME (Vac-HS-TFME), and we demonstrate how its use of vacuum conditions can accelerate the extraction kinetics of analytes with long equilibration times. The pressure-dependence of the extraction process was formulated and related to improvements in gas-phase diffusivity when lowering the total pressure. Four low-molecular-weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were used to experimentally verify the improvements in extraction efficiencies enabled by Vac-HS-TFME (vs. HS-TFME). To this end, the effects of temperature and extraction time on Vac-HS-TFME were investigated, with the results being compared to those obtained via regular HS-TFME. Furthermore, the use of a high-capacity sorbent in TFME allowed the positive effects of temperature and vacuum conditions to be combined successfully. Extraction-time profiles constructed at 30 and 50 °C revealed substantial acceleration in the overall extraction kinetics when sampling under vacuum conditions. At 50 °C, all of the analytes extracted via Vac-HS-TFME reached equilibrium within 45 min, whereas only two reached this state under atmospheric pressure. Vac-HS-TFME's analytical performance was evaluated under optimized conditions, and the results were compared to those obtained with regular HS-TFME. The findings revealed that for the two lighter PAHs, the performance of the two methods was similar since they were extracted close or at equilibrium. However, the calibration models for the two heavier PAHs tested here were linear over a wider concentration range (50-10000 ng L-1) when using Vac-HS-TFME, had superior intra-day repeatability (7.4% and 6.7% vs. 11% and 9.3% with regular HS-TFME), and the limits of detection were lower compared to regular HS-TFME (15 and 11 ng L-1 compared to 136 to 100 ng L-1 with regular HS-TFME). Finally, the analysis of spiked wastewater effluent samples showed that the matrix did not affect extraction. The proposed Vac-HS-TFME approach combines the advantages of low-pressure sampling and high-capacity sorbent, and has a great potential for future applications in food, flavour, environmental, and biological analyses.

Abstract
Owing to the ubiquitous occurrence and chemotoxicity of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene), the development of stable and accurate analysis methods that can assess environment risks and can generate monitoring data rapidly is urgent. In this work, a new strategy was proposed for efficient detection of BTEX. By creatively utilizing thermal deposition method, a robust SPME fiber was fabricated, where the γCD-MOF acted as the adsorbent, while PDMS functionalized as the adhesive and protective coating. Benefiting from the protection of PDMS, the γCD-MOF fiber presented significantly better extraction performance and exhibited long-term structural stabilities in aqueous or methanol samples up to a week. The stable and improved properties of γCD-MOF demonstrated that the PDMS protected the MOF components from the adverse effects of solvent. The detection limits of PDMS modified γCD-MOF fiber for BTEX was as low as 0.13-0.29 ng L-1 that accompanied with wide linear range of 1-1000 ng L-1, which was significantly superior to commercial PDMS fiber and other MOF-based fibers. Besides, the feasibility of the proposed method was verified by the quantitative determination of BTEX in real water samples. This work presents an effective strategy for creating ultrasensitive and stable SPME fibers based on γCD-MOF for applications in aqueous samples or other poor solvent.

Abstract
The following work presents a new, rapid, potential to be portable, convenient, and low-cost method using hollow fiber membrane-protected solid phase microextraction followed by corona discharge ion mobility spectrometry which was used for determining dimethyl methylphosphonate in beverages. Response surface methodology based on the design of Box-Behnken was implemented for optimizing the different factors influencing the proposed method for obtaining the best results. Optimal extractions were calculated with 65 µm polydimethylsiloxane-divinylbenzene fiber, fiber equilibration time of 10 min, stirring rate of the sample solution at 750 rpm, and extraction temperature of 50 °C. The proposed technique provided linear range (0.5-50 µg mL-1), good linearity (>0.991), and repeatability (the relative standard deviations of 5.42% and 8.37% of intra- and inter-day analyses, respectively) under the optimized extraction conditions. Finally, the developed method was successfully used for determining dimethyl methylphosphonate in beverages such as coffee mix, fruit juice, tap water, milk, and tea.

Abstract
Poly(dimethylsiloxane)-based thin-film sorbent sheets (SPMESH) have previously been used for parallel headspace (HS) extraction prior to direct analysis in real-time mass spectrometry (DART-MS) for rapid quantitation of odorants in complex matrices. However, HS-SPMESH extraction is poorly suited for less volatile odorants, e.g., volatile phenols. This report describes modifications to the previous SPMESH extraction device, which make it amenable to parallel extraction of low-volatility analytes from multiwell plates under direct immersion (DI) conditions. Optimization and validation of the DI-SPMESH-DART-MS approach were performed on four volatile phenols (4-ethylphenol, 4-ethylguaiacol, 4-methylguaiacol, and guaiacol) of relevance to the quality of grape juices. Negative-ion mode DART-MS spectra showed a series of oxygenated adducts [M + nO - H]- for all analytes, but isobaric interferences could be limited for three of the four analytes by selecting an appropriate MS/MS transition. Signal suppression from nonvolatiles (sugars, acids) could be overcome by a rinse step. DI-SPMESH-DART-MS analysis of 24 samples could be performed in ∼45 min (30 min extraction, 16 min DART analysis) with 0.5-3 μg/L detection limits in aqueous and model juice solutions. In real grape juices (n = 5 cultivars), good accuracy (72-137%) could be achieved for two of the four volatile phenols initially investigated, 4-ethylphenol and 4-ethylguaiacol. However, poor accuracy was observed for guaiacol in some cultivars, and 4-methylguaiacol could not be quantitated due to interferences with other volatile phenols. Despite these limitations, DI-SPMESH-DART-MS/MS may be useful for prescreening a large number of samples prior to more selective conventional analyses.

Abstract
Dried and ground red pepper is a spice used as seasoning in various traditional dishes all over the world; nevertheless, the pedoclimatic conditions of the diverse cultivation areas provide different chemical characteristics, and, consequently, diverse organoleptic properties to this product. In the present study, the volatile profiles of 96 samples of two different ground bell peppers harvested in diverse Italian geographical areas, Altino (Abruzzo) and Senise (Lucania), and a commercial sweet paprika, have been studied by means of headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The investigation of their volatile profile has led to the identification of 59 analytes. Eventually, a discriminant classifier, Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA), was exploited to discriminate samples according to their geographical origin. The model provided very accurate results in external validation; in fact, it correctly classified all the 30 test samples, achieving 100% correct classification (on the validation set). Furthermore, in order to understand which volatiles contribute the most at differentiating the bell peppers from the different origins, a variable selection approach, Variable Importance in Projection (VIP), was used. This strategy led to the selection of sixteen diverse compounds which characterize the different bell pepper spices.

Abstract
Carbamates and dithiocarbamates are two classes of pesticides widely employed in the agriculture practice to control and avoid pests and weeds, hence, the monitoring of the residue of those pesticides in different foodstuff samples is important. Thus, this review presents the classification, chemical structure, use, and toxicology of them. Moreover, it was shown the evolution of liquid- and solid-phase microextractions employed in the extraction of carbamates and dithiocarbamates in water and foodstuff samples. The classification, operation mode, and application of the microextractions of liquid-phase and solid-phase used in their extraction were discussed and related to the analytical parameters and guidelines of green analytical chemistry.

Abstract
The evaluation of volatiles in food is an important aspect of food production. It gives knowledge about the quality of foods and their relationship to consumers’ choices. Alcohols, aldehydes, acids, esters, terpenes, pyrazines, and furans are the main chemical groups that are involved in aroma formation. They are products of food processing: thermal treatment, fermentation, storage, etc. Food aroma is a mixture of varied molecules. Because of this, the analysis of aroma composition can be challenging. The four main steps can be distinguished in the evaluation of the volatiles in the food matrix as follows: (1) isolation and concentration; (2) separation; (3) identification; and (4) sensory characterization. The most commonly used techniques to separate a fraction of volatiles from non-volatiles are solid-phase micro-(SPME) and stir bar sorptive extractions (SBSE). However, to study the active components of food aroma by gas chromatography with olfactometry detector (GC-O), solvent-assisted flavor evaporation (SAFE) is used. The volatiles are mostly separated on GC systems (GC or comprehensive two-dimensional GCxGC) with the support of mass spectrometry (MS, MS/MS, ToF–MS) for chemical compound identification. Besides omics techniques, the promising part could be a study of aroma using electronic nose. Therefore, the main assumptions of volatolomics are here described.

Abstract
Determination of pesticide residues in a wide variety of matrices is an ongoing challenge due to low concentration and substantial amounts of interfering endogenous compounds that can be coextracted with the analytes. Herein, we describe the use of cellulose thread both as a suitable sampling medium for various matrices and as a direct analysis platform through an improved thread spray mass spectrometry (MS) approach. Enhanced extraction and the subsequent generation of tiny nanodroplets, after the application of DC potential to the wet thread, enabled ultra-sensitive detection of pesticides without prior sample treatment. This methodology was applied to quantify glyphosate and its metabolite, aminomethylphosphonic acid, in surface water at 12.2 μg mL-1 limit of detection (LOD) via standard addition calibration. The method was also used for an internal standard calibration for the analysis of atrazine, which resulted in a LOD of 0.74 ng mL-1. The enhanced thread spray MS platform also proved effective when applied for direct analysis of diphenylamine and thiabendazole, which enabled the evaluation of post-harvest pesticide treatment of fruits (surface and interior) without complete destruction of the fruits.

Abstract
In this study, a fluorine-fluorine interaction approach through fluoridating boron nitride nanosheets (BNNs) for sensing perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in multiple food matrices was developed. Through a facile hydrothermal fluorination modification, the BNNs were transferred into homogeneous fluorinated boron nitride nanoparticles (F-BNNs) with robust networks and specific surface area. After morphological modification, the particles displayed strong adsorption and sensing capabilities on PFAAs in both solid and liquid food matrix. Under the evaluation of mass spectrometry, F-BNNs based microextraction approach exhibited low method detection limits (MDLs) in the ranges of 0.9-3.9 pg mL-1 and 3.6-15.8 pg g-1 for milk and meat matrices, respectively, with satisfactory repeatability (RSD% <13.5%) and recoveries (77.7-110.5%). This work not only depicted a facile approach for preparing F-BNNs based SPME fiber, but also provided a routine analysis protocol for monitoring PFAAs in food systems.
