Molecularly imprinted polymers-coated magnetic covalent organic frameworks for efficient solid-phase extraction of sulfonamides in fish

In this study, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were grown in situ on magnetic nitrogen-doped graphene foam (MNGF), and the resulting composite of COFs-modified MNGF (MNC) was wrapped by molecularly imprinted polymers (MNC@MIPs) for specifically capturing SAs. A magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) method for SAs was established using MNC@MIPs with good magnetic responsiveness. The adsorption performance of MNC@MIPs was superior to that of non-molecularly imprinted polymers (MNC@NIPs), with shorter adsorption/desorption time and higher imprinting factors. A high-efficiency SAs analytical method was developed by fusing HPLC and MNC@MIPs-based MSPE. This approach provides excellent precision, a low detection limit, and wide linearity. By analyzing fish samples, the feasibility of the approach was confirmed, with SAs recoveries and relative standard deviations in spiked samples in the ranges of 77.2-112.7 % and 2.0-7.2 %, respectively. This study demonstrated the potential use of MNC@MIPs-based MSPE for efficient extraction and quantitation of trace hazards in food.

Applications of metal organic frameworks in dispersive micro solid phase extraction (D-μ-SPE)

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a fascinating family of crystalline porous materials made up of metal clusters and organic linkers. In comparison with other porous materials, MOFs have unique characteristics including high surface area, homogeneous open cavities, and permanent high porosity with variable shapes and sizes. For these reasons, MOFs have recently been explored as sorbents in sample preparation by solid-phase extraction (SPE). However, SPE requires large amounts of sorbents and suffers from limited contact surfaces with analytes, which compromises extraction recovery and efficiency. Dispersive SPE (D-SPE) overcomes these limitations by dispersing the sorbents into the sample, which in turn increases contact with the analytes. Miniaturization of the microextraction procedure, particularly the amount of sorbent reduces the amount consumed of the organic solvent and shorten the time required to attain the equilibrium state. This may explain the reported high efficiency and applicability of MOFs in dispersive micro SPE (D-µ-SPE). This method retains all the advantages of solid phase extraction while also being simpler, faster, cheaper, and, in some cases, more effective in comparison with D-SPE. Besides, D-µ-SPE requires smaller amounts of the sorbents which reduces the overall cost, and the amount of waste generated from the analytical process. In this review, we discuss the applications of MOFs in D-µ-SPE of various analytes including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, organic dyes from miscellaneous matrices including water samples, biological samples and food samples.

Honeycomb-like triazine-based conjugated microporous polymers exhibiting simultaneous and ultrasensitive detection of fifteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons using solid-phase microextraction technique

BACKGROUND

Since the severe hazard to the ecosystem and widespread distribution through biological and man-made ways of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), it is very urgent to establish the ultrasensitive analytical method to quantitatively and directly monitor PAHs in real samples. However, because of the complicated environmental matrix and their trace concentration, the pre-concentration process is a necessary step to analyze of these compounds. In this study, solid phase microextraction (SPME) technique was proposed to separate and enrich fifteen trace PAHs from environmental samples.

RESULTS

In this work, a honeycomb-like triazine-based conjugated microporous polymers (T-CMPs) were prepared by Yamamoto reaction and firstly used as SPME coating material for the ultrasensitive direct-immersion-SPME of PAHs prior to high performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detector (HPLC-FLD). The synthesized T-CMPs was characterized using various spectroscopy and electron microscopy techniques. The unique porous network of T-CMPs might deliver abundant adsorption sites for PAHs. Orthogonal experimental design (OED) was used to investigate the influence of four experimental parameters on the enrichment ability. Under optimal situation, a wide linear range (which lasted from 0.003 to 1000 μg L-1) with the coefficients of determination (R2) varying 0.9981 to 0.9993 was obtained. The limits of detection (LODs) for the analytes varied from 0.001 to 1.650 μg L-1, and the limits of quantification (LOQs) were between 0.003 and 4.960 μg L-1. The proposed method was effectively employed to the simultaneous and ultrasensitive detection of fifteen PAHs in industrial wastewaters. The relative recoveries for PAHs analysis varied from 74.6 % to 105 % with the relative standard deviations (RSD) of 0.1 %-7.5 % in real water samples.

SIGNIFICANCE

The prepared SPME coating material exhibited a simultaneous, high extraction and adsorption capacity for fifteen PAHs due to its honeycomb-like porous structure, ultra-large specific surface area, strong π-π stacking, and hydrophobic interactions. The present research developed a novel strategy for the construction of SPME fiber coating composites and demonstrated great application potential in the field of sample pretreatment and environmental analytical chemistry.

Development of dispersive solid phase extraction method for the preconcentration of parathion ethyl as a simulant of nerve agent sarin from soil, plant and water samples prior to GC-MS determination

In the presented study, an efficient and fast analytical method was developed for the determination of parathion ethyl as sarin simulant by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) was performed to concentrate parathion ethyl from soil, plant and water samples. Reduced graphene oxide-iron (II, III) oxide (rGO-Fe3O4) nanocomposite was used as an adsorbent to collect the target analyte from the aqueous sample solutions. After the optimization of extraction/preconcentration parameters, optimum conditions for adsorbent amount, eluent type, mixing type/period, eluent volume and initial sample volume were determined as 15 mg, acetonitrile, vortex/30 s, 100 µL and 10 mL, respectively. Under the optimum conditions, analytical performance of the developed DSPE-GC-MS method was evaluated in terms of limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantitation (LOQ) and dynamic range. Dynamic range, LOD and LOQ values were figured out to be 0.94-235.15 µg/kg, 0.41 µg/kg and 1.36 µg/kg (mass based), respectively. Satisfactory percent recovery results (90.3-125% for soil, 93.5-108.7% for plant, 88.5-112.9% for tap water) were achieved for soil, plant and tap water samples which proved the accuracy and applicability of the developed method. It is predicted that the DSPE-GC-MS method can be accurately used for the detection of sarin in soil, plant and water samples taken from war territories.

Deep Eutectic Solvents for Extraction and Preconcentration of Organic and Inorganic Species in Water and Food Samples: A Review

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been developed as green solvents and these are capable as alternatives to conventional solvents used for the extraction of organic and inorganic species from food and water samples. The continuous generation of contaminated waste and increasing concern for the human health and environment have compelled the scientific community to investigate more ecological schemes. In this concern, the use of DESs have developed in one of the chief approach in the field of chemistry. These solvents have appeared as a capable substitute to conventional hazardous solvents and ionic liquids. The DESs has distinctive properties, easy preparation and components availability. It is not only used in scienctific fields but also used in quotidian life. There are many advantages of DESs in analytical chemistry, they are largely used for extraction and determination of inorganic and organic compounds from different samples. In previous a few years, several advanced researches have been focused on the separation and preconcentration of low level of pollutants using DESs as the extractants. This review summarizes the use of DESs in the separation and preconcentration of organic and inorganic species from water and food samples using various microextraction processes.

Nitrophenols in the environment: An update on pretreatment and analysis techniques since 2017

Nitrophenols, a versatile intermediate, have been widely used in leather, medicine, chemical synthesis, and other fields. Because these components are widely applied, they can enter the environment through various routes, leading to many hazards and toxicities. There has been a recent surge in the development of simple, rapid, environmentally friendly, and effective techniques for determining these environmental pollutants. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the latest research progress on the pretreatment and analysis methods of nitrophenols since 2017, with a focus on environmental samples. Pretreatment methods include liquid-liquid extraction, solid-phase extraction, dispersive extraction, and microextraction methods. Analysis methods mainly include liquid chromatography-based methods, gas chromatography-based methods, supercritical fluid chromatography. In addition, this review also discusses and compares the advantages/disadvantages and development prospects of different pretreatment and analysis methods to provide a reference for further research.

Covalent organic framework-sodium alginate-Ca2+-polyacrylic acid composite beads for convenient dispersive solid-phase extraction of neonicotinoid insecticides in fruit and vegetables

Neonicotinoids, the fastest-growing class of insecticides, have posed a multi-media residue problem with adverse effects on environment, biodiversity and human health. Herein, covalent organic framework-sodium alginate-Ca2+-polyacrylic acid composite beads (CACPs), facilely prepared at room temperature, were used in convenient dispersive solid-phase extraction (dSPE) and combined with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for the detection of five neonicotinoid insecticides (thiamethoxam, acetamiprid, dinotefuran, clothianidin, imidacloprid). CACPs can be completely separated within 1 min without centrifugation. After seven adsorption/desorption cycles, it maintained high extraction efficiencies (>90%). The developed method exhibited a wide linear range (0.01 ∼ 10 μg mL-1), low limits of detection (LODs, 0.0028 ∼ 0.0031 mg kg-1), and good repeatability (RSD ≤ 8.11%, n = 3). Moreover, it was applied to the determination of five neonicotinoids in fruit and vegetables (peach, pear, lettuce, cucumber, tomato), and recoveries ranged from 73.6% to 116.2%.

Pore Size Adjustment Strategy for the Fabrication of Molecularly Imprinted Covalent Organic Framework Nanospheres at Room Temperature for Selective Extraction of Zearalenone in Cereal Samples

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are attractive adsorbents for sample pretreatment due to their unique structure and properties. However, the selectivity of COFs for the extraction of hazardous compounds is still limited due to the lack of specific interactions between COFs and targets. Herein, we report a pore size adjustment strategy for room-temperature synthesis of molecularly imprinted COF (MICOF) for selective extraction of zearalenone (ZEN) in complex food samples. The three-dimensional building block tetra(4-aminophenyl) methane was used as a functional monomer, while dialdehyde monomers with different numbers of benzene ring were used to adjust the pore size of MICOF to match with the size of ZEN molecules. The prepared MICOF gave the largest adsorption capacity of 177.2 mg g-1 and the highest imprinting factor of 10.1 for ZEN so far. MICOF was used as the adsorbent for dispersed solid-phase extraction in combination with high-performance liquid chromatography for the determination of trace ZEN in cereals. The high selectivity of the developed method allows simple aqueous standard calibration for the matrix effect-free determination of ZEN in food samples. The limit of detection and the recoveries of the developed method were 0.21 μg kg-1 and 93.7-101.4%, respectively. The precision for the determination of ZEN was less than 3.8% (RSD, n = 6). The developed method is promising for the selective determination of ZEN in complex matrices.

Geldanaycin-encapsulated magnetic nanoparticle for isolation of myosin in proteomics

The grafting of a drug molecule, i.e., geldanamycin (GA) onto polyethyleneimine (PEI)-coated magnetic nanoparticle produces a novel composite, GA@Fe3O4-NH2. The composite is confirmed by characterizations with FT-IR, Raman, SEM, EDS, VSM and TEM. Due to the high binding-affinity of GA with myosin heavy chain (MYH), GA@Fe3O4-NH2 exhibits excellent adsorption performance towards myosin. Consequently, a solid-phase extraction procedure is established for highly efficient and selective separation of myosin from pig heart extract. At pH 6.0, an adsorption efficiency of 97.1 % is achieved for treating 100 μg mL-1 myosin (0.1 mL) with 0.1 mg GA@Fe3O4-NH2 as adsorbent. The adsorption behavior of myosin onto GA@Fe3O4-NH2 fits Langmuir model, corresponding to a theoretical adsorption capacity of 518.1 mg g-1. The adsorbed myosin can be readily recycled by the SDS solution (1 %, m/m) with an elution efficiency of 91.8 %. According to circular dichroism spectroscopy, the conformational changes of myosin during adsorption and elution are reversible. For practical application, myosin is successfully isolated from the pig left ventricular protein extract with GA@Fe3O4-NH2, and SDS-PAGE and LC-MS/MS showed that myosin had high purity and a total of 716 proteins could be identified. Significantly, Geldamycin-encapsulated magnetic nanoparticle for the separation of myosin well exploits the potential of the nanomaterials modified by drug molecules in the separation and purification of target proteins.

Preparation of COF-coated nickel foam adsorbents for dispersive solid-phase extraction of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from Chinese herbal medicines

Covalent organic framework coated nickel foam (NF@COF) was prepared as a sorbent for the dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) prior to their determination by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The structure and morphology of the as-synthesized NF@COF were characterized by different techniques. Various key parameters affecting the performance of the DSPE method, including the amount of sorbent, desorption solvent, desorption volume and time, extraction time, and sample volume, were investigated. Under the optimized conditions, NF@COF combined with GC-MS was successfully applied to the determination of 16 PAHs in CHMs. The method showed wide linearity (20-2000 ng mL-1), low limits of determination (0.3-2.7 ng mL-1), and high recoveries (78.0-124%). These results revealed that NF@COF has the potential for efficient extraction of PAHs from complex samples.

Facile synthesis of spherical covalent organic frameworks for enrichment and quantification of aryl organophosphate esters in mouse serum and tissues

Here, an imine-linked-based spherical covalent organic framework (COF) was prepared at room temperature. The as-synthesized spherical COF served as an adsorbent in dispersive solid-phase extraction (dSPE), by its virtue of great surface area (1542.68 m2 /g), regular distribution of pore size (2.95 nm), and excellent stability. Therefore, a simple and high-efficiency dispersive solid phase extraction method based on a spherical COF coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was established to determine aryl organophosphate esters in biological samples. This approach displayed favorable linearity in the range of 10.0-1000.0 ng/L (r > 0.9989), a high signal enhancement factor (58.8-181.8 folds) with low limits of detection (0.3-3.3 ng/L). Moreover, it could effectively eliminate complex matrix interference to accurately extract seven aryl organophosphate esters from mouse serum and tissue samples with spiked recoveries of 82.0%-117.4%. The as-synthesized spherical COF has been successfully applied in sample preparation. The dSPE-HPLC-MS/MS method based on a spherical COF has potential application to study the pollutants' metabolism in vivo.

Analytical application of flower-shaped nickel nanomaterial for the preconcentration of manganese in domestic wastewater samples

In this study, detection sensitivity of the conventional flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer (FAAS) for the determination of manganese (Mn2+) was enhanced by employing a preconcentration method from wastewater samples. Flower-shaped Ni(OH)2 nanomaterials were synthesized and used as sorbent material in preconcentration procedure. With the aim of attaining optimum experimental conditions, effective parameters of extraction method were optimized and these included pH of buffer solution, desorption solvent concentration and volume, mixing type and period, nanoflower amount, and sample volume. The detection limit of the optimized method was determined to be 2.2 μg L-1, and this correlated to about 41-fold enhancement in detection power relative to direct FAAS measurement. Domestic wastewater was used to test the feasibility of the proposed method to real samples by performing spike recovery experiments. The wastewater sample was spiked at four different concentrations of manganese, and the percent recoveries determined were in the range of 95-120%.

Slice-layer COFs-aerogel: a regenerative dispersive solid-phase extraction adsorbent for determination of ultra-trace quinolone antibiotics

A novel type of three-dimensional network structure, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) aerogel, was fabricated and applied to dispersive solid-phase extraction (dSPE) of quinolone antibiotics (QAs). Density functional theory (DFT) was applied to investigate the possible interaction mechanism and results confirmed that the strong adsorption affinity is attributed to the intralayer hydrogen bonds and π-π interaction. Furthermore, a sensitive analytical method based on COFs-aerogel for determining quinolone antibiotics residues in water and honey samples was developed and HPLC-MS/MS was used for sample detection and quantification. Under the optimal conditions, COFs-aerogel exhibited a wide linearity (0.1-500 ng∙L-1), low limits of detection (0.02-0.06 ng∙L-1), and good precision (RSD ˂ 10%) for selected QAs. A preliminary practical application of the developed method was proved by the efficient detection of quinolone antibiotics in water and food samples with good recoveries (68.2-104% and 64.0-100% for water and honey samples, respectively). Combining the experimental data with theoretical calculation, results illustrated that COFs-aerogel holds a great potential to capture contaminants and address environmental and food safety issues.

Development of magnetic dispersive micro-solid phase extraction of four phenolic compounds from food samples based on magnetic chitosan nanoparticles and a deep eutectic supramolecular solvent

A magnetic dispersive micro-solid phase extraction technique (CS@Fe₃O₄-MD-μSPE-DESP) based on magnetic chitosan nanoparticles and a deep eutectic supramolecular solvent was developed and applied to determinations of four phenolic compounds in food samples. To prevent environmental pollution and the introduction of toxic substances, deep eutectic supramolecular solvents (DESPs), which exhibited greater desorption capacities than conventional organic solvents and deep eutectic solvents, were used as novel green eluents for the first time. Some important parameters were screened by the Plackett-Burman method and then further optimized with response surface methodology (RSM). Under the optimal conditions, the proposed method showed excellent methodological indices with linearity over the range 0.1-200.0 µg·mL^-1, R² > 0.9988, extraction recoveries above 94.8 %, and precision (RSD%) below 2.9 %. The established method finishes the process of adsorption and desorption in approximately 3 min and enhances the efficiency for determination of phenolic compounds.

Selective Adsorption Behavior and Mechanism for Cd(II) in Aqueous Solution with a Recoverable Magnetie-Surface Ion-Imprinted Polymer

A novel recoverable magnetic Cd(II) ion-imprinted polymer was synthesized on the surface of silica-coated Fe₃O₄ particles via the surface imprinting technique and chemical grafting method. The resulting polymer was used as a highly efficient adsorbent for the removal of Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The adsorption experiments revealed that Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@IIP had a maximum adsorption capacity of up to 29.82 mg·g^-1 for Cd(II) at an optimal pH of 6, with the adsorption equilibrium achieved within 20 min. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model. Thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption of Cd(II) on the imprinted polymer was spontaneous and entropy-increasing. Furthermore, the Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@IIP could rapidly achieve solid-liquid separation in the presence of an external magnetic field. More importantly, despite the poor affinity of the functional groups constructed on the polymer surface for Cd(II), we improved the specific selectivity of the imprinted adsorbent for Cd(II) through surface imprinting technology. The selective adsorption mechanism was verified by XPS and DFT theoretical calculations.

A novel multiwalled carbon nanotube-cyclodextrin nanocomposite for solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in snow samples

Novel solid-phase microextraction coatings based on the use of multiwalled carbon nanotube-cyclodextrin (MWCNT-CD) nanocomposites were developed for the determination of 16-priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at ultratrace levels in snow samples. The performance of both β- and γ-CD was tested to increase the detection capabilities towards the heaviest and most lipophilic compounds, i.e., five- and six-ring PAHs. To facilitate the interactions of MWCNTs with CDs, an oxidation procedure using both HNO₃ and H₂O₂ was applied, obtaining superior results using MWCNTs-H₂O₂-γ-CD fiber. Detection and quantitation limits below 0.7 and 2.3 ng/L, RSD lower than 21%, and recoveries of 88(± 2)-119.8(± 0.4)% proved the reliability of the developed method for the determination of PAHs at ultratrace levels. The complexation capability of the γ-CD was also demonstrated in solution by NMR and fluorescence spectroscopy studies and at solid state by XRD analysis. Finally, snow samples collected in the ski area of Dolomiti di Brenta were analyzed, showing a different distribution of the 16 priority PAHs, being naphthalene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene, and pyrene the only compounds detected in all the analyzed samples.

Advances on Hormones in Cosmetics: Illegal Addition Status, Sample Preparation, and Detection Technology

Owing to the rapid development of the cosmetic industry, cosmetic safety has become the focus of consumers' attention. However, in order to achieve the desired effects in the short term, the illegal addition of hormones in cosmetics has emerged frequently, which could induce skin problems and even skin cancer after long-term use. Therefore, it is of great significance to master the illegal addition in cosmetics and effectively detect the hormones that may exist in cosmetics. In this review, we analyze the illegally added hormone types, detection values, and cosmetic types, as well as discuss the hormone risks in cosmetics for human beings, according to the data in unqualified cosmetics in China from 2017 to 2022. Results showed that although the frequency of adding hormones in cosmetics has declined, hormones are still the main prohibited substances in illegal cosmetics, especially facial masks. Because of the complex composition and the low concentration of hormones in cosmetics, it is necessary to combine efficient sample preparation technology with instrumental analysis. In order to give the readers a comprehensive overview of hormone analytical technologies in cosmetics, we summarize the advanced sample preparation techniques and commonly used detection techniques of hormones in cosmetics in the last decade (2012-2022). We found that ultrasound-assisted extraction, solid phase extraction, and microextraction coupled with chromatographic analysis are still the most widely used analytical technologies for hormones in cosmetics. Through the investigation of market status, the summary of sample pretreatment and detection technologies, as well as the discussion of their development trends in the future, our purpose is to provide a reference for the supervision of illegal hormone residues in cosmetics.

A Facile and Rapid Strategy for Quantifying PCBs in Cereals Based on Dispersive Solid-Phase Extraction and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry: A Reference for Safety Concerns in Sustainable Textiles

Cereals and their derivative products such as starch and cyclodextrin are significant natural materials for sustainable textile processing (e.g., sizing, dispersing, etc.). However, the contamination of cereals with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is often neglected, which has led to increasing concerns due to the adverse effects on end users. Therefore, monitoring PCBs in cereals is of great importance in preventing health risks. However, high starch, protein, and fat contents make cereals a complicated matrix and can challenge the analysis of PCBs in cereals. This work describes a facile and rapid strategy for quantifying 18 PCBs in cereals that included corn, wheat, and rice through dispersive solid-phase extraction and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. Importantly, this was the first time that carboxyl-modified, multi-walled carbon nanotubes were incorporated in the detection of PCBs in cereals. The influences of several parameters on the extraction and clean-up efficiency were investigated; these included the type and volume of extraction solvent, sonication time, and the type and dosage of the adsorbent. The matrix effects on quantification were also evaluated. This approach exhibited a better clean-up performance. All the analytes showed weak matrix effects, and thus a solvent standard plot could be prepared for their quantification. Spiking experiments in the selected matrices at three concentration levels from 0.5 to 10 μg/kg resulted in satisfactory recoveries that ranged from 79.2% to 110.5% with relative standard deviations (RSDs; n = 6) less than 10.3%. The limits of detection (LODs) and quantification (LOQs) ranged from 0.04 to 0.1 μg/kg and 0.1 to 0.4 μg/kg, respectively. The practical application of this method was investigated by analyzing actual cereal samples, which demonstrated that the proposed approach was a facile and efficient strategy for PCB determination and provided a reference for the safety evaluation of sustainable textiles. The method also could be generalized to other troublesome samples for testing of multiple PCBs.

Determination of cobalt in chamomile tea samples at trace levels by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry after poly(vinyl alcohol)-magnetic hydrogel based dispersive solid phase extraction

In this study, an analytical strategy was proposed for the determination of cobalt at trace levels by using a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (FAAS) system after magnetic hydrogel based dispersive solid phase extraction (MH-DSPE). Poly(vinyl alcohol) based magnetic hydrogels (PVA-MH) were synthesized easily, quickly, and cost effectively in the laboratory and used as an adsorbent material in the microextraction process. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) values were recorded as 4.2 and 14.1 μg L^-1, respectively. To investigate the matrix effects on the analyte signal, spike experiments were performed using chamomile tea extracts and good recovery results were obtained between 85.7 and 113.8%. A 57.8-fold improvement was achieved in the detection power compared to that of a conventional FAAS system. The results obtained throughout all experimental studies demonstrated the applicability in addition to the accuracy of the method for the quantification of trace levels of cobalt with high accuracy in a chamomile tea matrix.

Environmental impacts of post-consumer plastic wastes: Treatment technologies towards eco-sustainability and circular economy

The huge amounts of plastic production (millions of tons) are carried out all around world every year and EU is one of the biggest consumers of these products. In 2021, recycling rate of plastic wastes around 32.5% in the EU and the rest end up on their journey in landfills and oceans that lead to environmental pollution which is a crucial global concern. Thus, it is important to take necessary steps to control the use of such plastic and to sustainably dispose them. One of the solutions to the problem is to use a better alternative to plastics which doesn't degrade land, water or air nor affects living organisms. Circular economy is another answer to this problem, it would ensure prevention of post-consumer plastic waste from getting formed. In addition, sustainable disposal approaches for plastic waste such as pyrolysis, plasma gasification, photocatalytic degradation, and production of value-added products from polymer waste can be explored. These recycling methods has huge potential for research and studies and can play a crucial in eliminating post-consumer plastic waste. This review paper aims to discuss the environmental effects of post-consumer plastic wastes as well as the emerging approaches for the treatment of these environmental wastes towards eco-sustainability and circular economy.

Selective removal and recovery of Ni(ii) using a sulfonic acid-based magnetic rattle-type ion-imprinted polymer: adsorption performance and mechanisms

It is significant to selectively remove Ni(ii) ions from wastewater. A novel sulfonic acid-based magnetic rattle-type ion-imprinted polymer (Fe₃O₄@void@IIP-Ni(ii)) was designed by taking advantage of the strong interaction between Ni(ii) and sulfonic acid groups. Green polymerization was used to synthesize Fe₃O₄@void@IIP-Ni(ii), which was then investigated using SEM, TEM, FT-IR, VSM, TGA, EDS, and XPS. The adsorption results indicated that the prepared imprinted material had a short adsorption equilibrium time (10 min), good magnetic responsiveness (about 5 seconds) and high adsorption capacity (44.64 mg g^-1) for Ni(ii) at the optimal pH of 6.0. The removal rate of Ni(ii) was up to 99.97%, and the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic, following the pseudo-secondary kinetic model and Langmuir model. The selectivity coefficients of the imprinted material were 4.67, 4.62, 8.94 and 9.69 for Ni(ii)/Co(ii), Ni(ii)/Cu(ii), Ni(ii)/Pb(ii) and Ni(ii)/Zn(ii), respectively. The regeneration and application of the imprinted material in actual water samples have been verified. Moreover, the mechanism of selective adsorption for Ni(ii) was investigated by FTIR, XPS and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The results showed that the imprinted sorbent has a strong binding ability with Ni(ii), and the adsorption of Ni(ii) on Fe₃O₄@void@IIP-Ni(ii) was the result of the co-coordination of O atoms of the sulfonic acid groups and N atoms of -N-C[double bond, length as m-dash]O groups in AMPS with Ni(ii).

Anthocyanins in Different Food Matrices: Recent Updates on Extraction, Purification and Analysis Techniques

Anthocyanins (ANCs), a kind of natural pigments, are widely present in food substrates. Evidence has shown that ANCs can promote health in terms of anti-oxidation, anti-tumor, and anti-inflammation. However, the oxidative stability of ANCs limits accurate quantitation and analysis. Therefore, faster, more accurate, and highly sensitive extraction and determination methods are necessary for understanding the role of ANCs in medicine and food. This review presents an updated overview of pretreatment and detection techniques for ANCs in various food substrates since 2015. Liquid-liquid extraction and various green solvent extraction methods, such as accelerated solvents extraction, deep eutectic solvents extraction, ionic liquids extraction, and supercritical fluid extraction, are commonly used pretreatment methods for extraction and purification of ANCs. Liquid chromatography coupled with different detectors (tandem mass spectrometry and UV detectors) and spectrophotometry methods are some of the determination methods for ANC. This study has updated, compared, and discussed different pretreatment and analysis methods. Moreover, the advanced methods and development prospects in this field are comprehensively summarized, which can provide references for further utilization of ANCs.

Sensitive and selective magnetic dispersive microextraction of diazinon from urine samples by molecularly imprinted polymer based on core-shell metal-organic frameworks

A core-shell magnetic metal-organic framework (Fe₃O₄ SiO₂/ PAEDTC@ MIL- 101 (Fe)) was synthesized as the substrate and then covered with a surface molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) layer. Next, Fe₃O₄ SiO₂/ PAEDTC@ MIL- 101 (Fe) @ MIP was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, BET, VSM, TEM, and FE-SEM techniques and applied for selective, fast, and sensitive magnetic dispersive solid-phase microextraction (M-DµSPE) of diazinon from urine samples by the GC- FID detection method. The key experimental variables affecting M-DµSPE were studied and optimized by central composite design (CCD). Under optimum conditions (5 mL; sample at pH: 7.0, the mass of solid sorbent; 6 mg, extraction time; 4 min, acetonitrile as an eluent solvent; 1.5 mL, and desorption time; 3 min, and then reconstituted with 100 µL of methanol), the proposed method exhibits high sensitivity with limits of detection and quantification of 0.005 and 0.017 ng mL^-1, respectively. Excellent extraction recovery (98.5 %), wide linearity range (0.02-200000 ng mL^-1, R² > 0.992), high enrichment factors (47-53), and satisfactory precision (<6.3 % RSD) were achieved. The MIP- MOF@ M-DµSPE -GC-FID method can be used with high precision and wide linearity to extract and analyze trace levels of diazinon in real urine samples.

Ionic liquid-immobilized silica gel as a new sorbent for solid-phase extraction of heavy metal ions in water samples

In the current study, we have developed a solid-phase extraction (SPE) method with novel C18-alkylimidazolium ionic liquid immobilized silica (SiO₂–(CH₂)₃–Im–C₁₈) for the preconcentration of trace heavy metals from aqueous samples as a prior step to their determination by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). The material was characterized by Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis. A mini-column packed with SiO₂–(CH₂)₃–Im–C₁₈ sorbent was used for the extraction of the metal ions complexed with 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN) from the water sample. The effects of pH, PAN concentration, length of the alkyl chain of the ionic liquid, eluent concentration, eluent volume, and breakthrough volume have been investigated. The SiO₂–(CH₂)₃–Im–C₁₈ allows the isolation and preconcentration of the heavy metal ions with enrichment factors of 150, 60, 80, 80, and 150 for Cr³⁺, Ni²⁺, Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Pb²⁺, respectively. The limits of detection (LODs) for Cr³⁺, Ni²⁺, Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Pb²⁺ were 0.724, 11.329, 4.571, 0.112, and 0.819 μg L⁻¹, respectively with the relative standard deviation (RSD) in the range of 0.941–1.351%.

Novel C18-alkylimidazolium ionic liquid immobilized silica (SiO₂–(CH₂)₃–Im–C₁₈) was synthesized through a four-step procedure. It showed high efficiency for the separation/preconcentration of trace heavy metal ions from aqueous samples.

A perspective on developing solid-phase extraction technologies for industrial-scale critical materials recovery

Critical materials (CMs) are a group of elements that have been determined to be important for the modern economy, but which may face current or potential supply limitations. Some examples of metals that have received the CM designation include the rare earth elements, indium, gallium, and lithium. The last decade has seen a major push for the development of new and improved technologies for the recovery and purification of CMs from various traditional and non-traditional resources in an effort to diversify supply. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is one broad category of these experimental extraction technologies. SPE involves the application of a solid material to preferentially retain in the solid phase one or more specific components of an aqueous solution, leaving the other components behind in the aqueous phase. A wide range of different sorbents has been used for SPE, and many offer significant potential advantages, including low cost, low environmental impact, and high customizability. Hierarchically porous silica monoliths are one example of a cutting-edge sorbent that provides a durable, high surface area foundation that can be functionalized with a variety of targeted ligands for the selective extraction of specific CMs. Despite impressive recent advances in SPE, there remain areas for improvement that are common across the discipline. To demonstrate the practical viability of these innovative CM recovery systems, future SPE studies would benefit from devoting additional focus to the scalability of their material, as well as from focusing on real-world feedstocks and conducting techno-economic analyses and environmental impact studies.

Application of microcrystalline cellulose as an efficient and cheap sorbent for the extraction of metoprolol from plasma and wastewater before HPLC-MS/MS determination

A dispersive solid phase extraction method based on a new sorbent has been performed on plasma and wastewater samples to determine metoprolol by high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. In this study, the analyte was adsorbed from the samples onto microcrystalline cellulose as a green and efficient sorbent and then eluted to use in the determination step. In the mass spectrometer, the analyte was detected in the positive mode and selectivity of the analysis was increased by sequential mass analysis through multiple reaction monitoring. All of the effective parameters in the extraction of metoprolol from plasma and wastewater were optimized. Under optimal conditions the method was linear in the ranges of 1-1000 and 0.1-1000 ng/mL in plasma and wastewater samples, respectively. The detection limit of the method was 0.30 and 0.03 ng/mL in plasma and wastewater samples, respectively. The data showed that the method provides low detection limit, wide linear range, good precision, and high extraction recovery. Finally several plasma and wastewater samples were successfully analyzed using the method. The use of small amount of a green and inexpensive sorbent and low volume of plasma without the need for further pretreatment steps are the main advantages of the method.

Dispersive solid phase extraction based on reduced graphene oxide modified Fe3O4 nanocomposite for trace determination of parabens in rock, soil, moss, seaweed, feces, and water samples from Horseshoe and Faure Islands

This study reports an efficient, green, sensitive and simple analytical protocol for trace determination of methyl paraben, ethyl paraben, propyl paraben, butylparaben and benzyl paraben by high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV). The analytes were preconcentrated using an ultrasonication supported (US) dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) method based on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) modified iron nanoparticles (US-Fe₃O₄@rGO-DSPE). A reversed-phase C18 column and an isocratic elution program comprising of 20 mM phosphate buffer (pH 4.50) and acetonitrile(58:42, v/v) were used to elute and separate the analytes for detection. The limits of detection determined for the analytes were very low and were in the range of 0.02 - 0.16 ng mL^-1. The coefficients of determination obtained for the analytes ranged from 0.9973 to 0.9998, and this validated good linearity of the method.Percent relative standard deviations obtained in the range of 2.5 - 10.6% verified the method's high intraday repeatability. Accuracy of the proposed method was assessed with spiking experiments performed on complex sample matrices. Percent recoveries calculated for spiked soil, artificial seawater and seaweed samples were in acceptable ranges of 95 - 121%, 87 - 117% and 85 - 111%, respectively. These figures of merit suggest that HPLC-UV coupled with the US-Fe₃O₄@rGO-DSPEmethod is suitable for the determination of parabens in Antarctic samples.

Conductive Polymer-Based Nanocomposites as Powerful Sorbents: Design, Preparation and Extraction Applications

Conductive polymers as composite materials have been attracted tremendous attention due to their versatile and excellent features such as tunable conductivity, facile synthesis and fabrication, high chemical and thermal stability etc. These characteristics make them versatile and let them being used in numerous fields including microelectronics, optics and biosensors. Throughout the mentioned fields, conductive polymers particularly perform as effective sorbents. Although tremendous efforts have been put into this topic, to the best of our knowledge, a comprehensive up-to-date review on the applications of conductive polymers as efficient sorbents has not been reported. The main objective of this paper is to make a significant contribution to the recent literature toward the synthesis and extraction applications of conductive polymers as efficient sorbents.

Controllable synthesis of uniform large-sized spherical covalent organic frameworks for facile sample pretreatment and as naked-eye indicator

The successful application of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) depends on not only their unique chemical structures but also their morphology, size, and architecture. Spherical COFs (SCOFs) are attracted special attention due to the superiority of spherical materials in many applications. However, the synthesis of uniform large-sized SCOFs remains a challenge. Herein, by carefully optimizing the synthesis of a heteropore COF, we find that solvent type and catalyst concentration play important roles in determining the morphology and size of COFs, and eventually achieve the controllable synthesis of large SCOFs with uniform sizes ranging from 200 μm to 5 mm. The obtained SCOFs keep the dual-pore feature of the heteropore COF and show good stability and high crystallinity. To exhibit the superior application potential of SCOFs, the SCOFs with a size range of 200-300 μm were demonstrated to be promising solid-phase extraction (SPE) fillers. As-prepared SCOFs-packed SPE column could effectively remove ≥99% phytochrome matrix from 6 different vegetable samples in 10 s, accompanied by 72.56-112.37% recoveries of 33 chemical hazards with different physicochemical properties, thus showing greatly promising application prospects in sample pretreatment of nontargeted food safety analysis. By utilizing acid/base-adjusted reversible color change, millimeter-sized SCOFs were developed as an easy-to-operate and reusable naked-eye indicator of acids.

Application of β-Cyclodextrin metal-organic framework/titanium dioxide hybrid nanocomposite as dispersive solid-phase extraction adsorbent to organochlorine pesticide residues in honey samples

A simple and efficient dispersive solid-phase extraction (D-SPE) method combined with gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) was developed to determine organochlorine pesticides (OCP) in honey. Firstly, a type of hybrid nanocomposite (CD-MOF/TiO₂) was prepared by grafting a metal-organic framework material synthesized with cyclodextrin as an organic ligand onto titanium dioxide. Then, the CD-MOF/TiO₂ was used as a D-SPE adsorbent to extract the OCP, and the effects of the amount of adsorbent, ultrasonic time, vortex time, pH, and salinity on the extraction were investigated using Plackett-Burman design and Box-Behnken Design. Under the optimized adsorption and desorption conditions, an analysis method that combined D-SPE with GC-MS/MS was established. The linear ranges of 14 OCP are 1-500 μg kg^-1 and the correlation coefficients are between 0.9991 and 1.000. The limits of detection and quantification vary from 0.01 to 0.04 μg kg^-1 and 0.04 to 0.12 μg kg^-1, respectively. The intra-day and inter-day precision of this method are suitable (RSDs% less than 11.3%). The established CD-MOF/TiO₂ / D-SPE method was used for the extraction of OCP in honey samples with recovery in the range of 76.4 to 114.3%. The results demonstrate that the CD-MOF/TiO₂ has a good selective enrichment ability for OCP and is suitable for the D-SPE pretreat of honey sample analysis.

Chemical and computational strategy for design of "switchable" sorbent based on hydroxyapatite nanoparticles for dispersive micro-solid phase extraction of tetracyclines

A challenging task in analytical chemistry is an application of renewable and natural materials for isolation of hazardous substances such as antimicrobial drugs from environmental samples. The energy-efficient scalable hydrothermal procedure to fabricate the eco-friendly "switchable" sorbent based on hydroxyapatite nanoparticles with in situ modified surface using a small amount of capping agents was developed. Sorbents characterization including the surface composition investigation via quantum-chemical calculation based on the original approach was provided. The sorbents demonstrated well expressed controllable surface switching and high values of the sorption and elution efficiency for tetracycline, oxytetracycline, and chlortetracycline achieved by simple change of the medium pH. These processes were thoroughly discussed based on the results of chemical and computational experiments. A simple and universal strategy for choosing a suitable sorbent for solid phase extraction of target analytes was proposed for the first time. It was shown that the developed eco-friendly sample preparation procedure with use of biocompatible sorbents could be applied both for removal of target analytes from sample matrix (water samples) as well as for the quantitative analytes determination after elution step. It is believed that the presented research is significant for the determination of different amphoteric analytes in wide variety of samples.
