Synthesis and characterization of ZnS:Ni-NPs loaded on AC derived from apple tree wood and their applicability for the ultrasound assisted comparative adsorption of cationic dyes based on the experimental design

Sonochemical synthesis of inorganic cryogel Ag2Mo3O10@Ag/AgO: structural characterization, antibacterial activity, and dye adsorption properties

An additive-free ultrasonic-assisted synthesis of a multi-layered Ag₂Mo₃O₁₀@Ag/AgO cryogel (SMSSO) nanocomposite has been developed, and a possible formation mechanism of multi-layered SMSSO was proposed based on characterization results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS). The FE-SEM images demonstrated the formation process of the multi-layered SMSSO cryogel over time under sonication, starting with the growth of Ag₂Mo₃O₁₀ nanowires, and the formation of spherical nuclei which turn into an octahedron in the presence of excess silver ions. The antibacterial activity of the synthesized cryogel and its adsorption behavior for hazardous pollutant removal were explored. The results revealed that SMSSO exhibits excellent adsorption properties, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 277.77 mg g⁻¹ and removal of 99/95% for 150 mg L⁻¹ methylene blue (MB) by 0.005 g adsorbent doses at 60 °C and pH 9. It was also confirmed that the synthesized cryogels have good antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The selective adsorption capability of the cryogel toward cationic dye molecules and antibacterial activity makes it a competent candidate for water purification.

Decorating graphene oxide with zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) and pseudo-boehmite offers ultra-high adsorption capacity of diclofenac in hospital effluents

This study reports on an easy and scalable synthesis method of a novel magnetic nanocomposite (GO/ZIF-8/γ-AlOOH) based on graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets decorated with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), pseudo-boehmite (γ-AlOOH), and iron oxide (Fe₃O₄) nanoparticles by combining solvothermal and solid-state dispersion (SSD) methods. The nanocomposite was successfully applied to remove of diclofenac sodium (DCF) - a widely used pharmaceutical - from water. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the adsorption process and assess the interactions among the influencing factors on DCF removal efficiency; including contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial pH, solution temperature, and DCF concentration. Adsorption isotherm results showed a good fitting with the Langmuir isotherm model with an exceptional adsorption capacity value of 2594 mg g^-1 at 30 °C, which was highly superior to the previously reported adsorbents. In addition, kinetic and thermodynamic investigations further illustrated that the adsorption process was fast (equilibrium time = 50 min) and endothermic. The regeneration of GO/ZIF-8/γ-AlOOH nanocomposite using acetic acid solution (10% v/v) after a simple magnetic separation was confirmed in five consecutive cycles, which eliminate the usage of organic solvents. The nanocomposite has also shown a superior performance in treating a simulated hospital effluent that contained various pharmaceuticals as well as other organic, and inorganic constituents.

Integrated ozonation assisted electrocoagulation process for the removal of cyanide from steel industry wastewater

This work focuses on the removal of cyanide, chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), and chloride from biological oxidation treated (BOT) effluent of the steel industry by integrated ozonation assisted electrocoagulation method. The removal efficiency of the pollutants was found to be inefficient when the electrocoagulation or ozonation process was performed separately. However, a combination of ozonation and electrocoagulation gives a highly satisfactory result. Such an integrated approach for the treatment of BOT effluent has not been previously investigated. The effects of operating variables viz. ozone generation rate, current density, and analysis time on pollutant removal were primarily analyzed for the hybrid process. The experimental operating condition was optimized and was seen that ozone generation rate of 1.33 mg s^-1, ozonation time of 40 min, a current density of 100 A m^-2, and electrolysis time of 30 min were sufficient for reducing the pollutant concentration below its permissible limits. The removal efficiencies of the combined process at optimum conditions were 99.8%, 94.7%, 95%, and 46.5% for cyanide, COD, BOD, and chloride ions, respectively. A kinetic study was performed for the degradation of the pollutants during ozonation. The pseudo-first-order kinetic model was found to be best suited for the analysis with the highest R² value of 0.99 for cyanide, COD, BOD, and chloride, respectively. The mass transfer study conducted further showed that the volumetric mass transfer coefficient, K_la, was increased with that of the ozone generation rate. Cost estimation of the hybrid process was done and compared with that of the other reported integrated process.

Effect of ultrasonic irradiation power on sonochemical synthesis of gold nanoparticles

In this work, optimized size distribution and optical properties in the colloidal synthesis of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) were obtained using a proposed ultrasonic irradiation assisted Turkevich-Frens method. The effect of three nominal ultrasound (20 kHz) irradiation powers: 60, 150, and 210 W have been analyzed as size and shape control parameters. The GNPs colloidal solutions were obtained from chloroauric acid (HAuCl₄) and trisodium citrate (C₆H₅Na₃O₇·2H₂O) under continuous irradiation for 1 h without any additional heat or stirring. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) was monitored in the UV-Vis spectra every 10 min to found the optimal time for localized SPR wavelength (λ_LSPR), and the 210 sample procedure has reduced the λ_LSPR localization at 20 min, while 150 and 60 samples have showed λ_LSPR at 60 min. The nucleation and growth of GNPs showed changes in shape and size distribution associated with physical (cavitation, temperature) and chemical (radical generation, pH) conditions in the aqueous solution. The results showed quasi-spherical GNPs as pentakis dodecahedron (λ_LSPR = 560 nm), triakis icosahedron (λ_LSPR = 535 nm), and tetrakis hexahedron (λ_LSPR = 525 nm) in a size range from 12 to 16 nm. Chemical effects of ultrasound irradiation were suggested in the disproportionation process, electrons of AuCl₂^- are rapidly exchanged through the gold surface. After AuCl₄^- and Cl^- were desorbed, a tetrachloroaurate complex was recycled for the two-electron reduction by citrate, aurophilic interaction between complexes AuCl₂^-, electrons exchange, and gold seeds, the deposition of new gold atoms on the surface promoting the growth of GNPs. These mechanisms are enhanced by the effects of ultrasound, such as cavitation and transmitted energy into the solution. These results show that the plasmonic response from the reported GNPs can be tuned using a simple methodology with minimum infrastructure requirements. Moreover, the production method could be easily scalable to meet industrial manufacturing needs.

Machine learning approach for prediction of paracetamol adsorption efficiency on chemically modified orange peel

High consumption of paracetamol (PCM) has led to the discharge of a large quantity of its metabolite into the environment and there is an urgent need to remove this harmful contaminant in a sustainable manner. In this work, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was used as a Machine Learning tool for prediction of PCM adsorption efficiency on chemically modified orange peel (CMOP). Orange peel was chemically modified with orthophosphoric acid and then characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Thereafter, batch adsorption of PCM on CMOP were conducted at different operating conditions namely: contact time (0-330 min), temperature (30-50 °C) and initial drug concentration (10 mg/L-50 mg/L) to obtain the residual concentration of PCM in solution. Experimental data was used to compute the adsorption efficiency of PCM on CMOP. To predict the adsorption efficiency, different ANN architectures were examined. A neural network structure with Levenberg Marquardt (LM) training algorithm, 17 hidden neurons, and tangent sigmoid transfer function at both the input and output layers gave the best level of prediction. Comparing with experimental data, the optimal model yielded Mean Square Error (MSE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and Correlation coefficient (R²) of 5.8985 × 10^-04, 0.0243 and 0.9958 respectively. The results obtained showed that ANN is efficient in predicting the adsorption efficiency of PCM on CMOP.

Removal of colloidal precipitation plugging with high-power ultrasound

Petroleum is a continuous and dynamically stable colloidal system. In the process of oil extraction, transportation, and post-treatment, the stability of the petroleum sol system is easily destroyed, resulting in asphaltenes precipitation that can make pore throat, oil wells, and pipelines blocked, thereby damaging the reservoir and reducing oil recovery. In this paper, removing near-well plugging caused by asphaltene deposition with high-power ultrasound is investigated. Six PZT transducers with different parameters were used to carry out the experimental study. Results show that ultrasonic frequency is one important factor for removing colloidal precipitation plugging in cores, it could not be too high nor too low. The optimum ultrasonic frequency is 25 kHz; Selecting transducers with a higher power is an effective way to improve the removal efficiency. The optimum ultrasonic power is 1000 W. With the increase of ultrasonic treatment time, the recovery rate reaches the maximum and tends to be stable. ultrasonic processing time should be controlled within 120 min. Besides, three methods - ultrasonic treatment alone, chemical injection alone, and ultrasound-chemical method - for removing colloidal precipitation plugging are compared. Results indicate that the ultrasound-assisted chemical method is better than chemical injection alone or ultrasonic treatment alone to remove colloidal sediment in the core. Finally, the mechanism of the ultrasonic deplugging technique is analyzed from three aspects: cavitation effect, the thermal effect, and mechanical vibration.

Novel approach for effective removal of methylene blue dye from water using fava bean peel waste

Fava bean peels, Vicia faba (FBP) are investigated as biosorbents for the removal of Methylene Blue (MB) dye from aqueous solutions through a novel and efficient sorption process utilizing ultrasonic-assisted (US) shaking. Ultrasonication remarkably enhanced sorption rate relative to conventional (CV) shaking, while maintaining the same sorption capacity. Ultrasonic sorption rate amounted to four times higher than its conventional counterpart at 3.6 mg/L initial dye concentration, 5 g/L adsorbent dose, and pH 5.8. Under the same adsorbent dose and pH conditions, percent removal ranged between 70-80% at the low dye concentration range (3.6-25 mg/L) and reached about 90% at 50 mg/L of the initial dye concentration. According to the Langmuir model, maximum sorption capacity was estimated to be 140 mg/g. A multiple linear regression statistical model revealed that adsorption was significantly affected by initial concentration, adsorbent dose and time. FBP could be successfully utilized as a low-cost biosorbent for the removal of MB from wastewater via US biosorption as an alternative to CV sorption. US biosorption yields the same sorption capacities as CV biosorption, but with significant reduction in operational times.

Ultrasonic-assisted recycling of Nile tilapia fish scale biowaste into low-cost nano-hydroxyapatite: Ultrasonic-assisted adsorption for Hg2+ removal from aqueous solution followed by "turn-off" fluorescent sensor based on Hg2+-graphene quantum dots

This study was planned to recycle calcium and the phosphorus-rich Nile tilapia fish scale biowaste into nano-hydroxyapatite (FHAP), using ultrasonic-assisted extraction of calcium and phosphorus from fish scales, which was optimized in term of extraction time, acid concentration, extraction temperature, and ultrasonic power. These two elements were determined simultaneously by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry and the FHAP phase was formed upon addition of the extracted element solution in alkaline medium using homogenous precipitation assisted with ultrasound energy. The FHAP adsorbent was characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller. A combination of FHAP and the ultrasonic method was then used to remove Hg²⁺ from aqueous solution. Four significant variables affecting Hg²⁺ removal, namely, adsorbent dosage, pH, ultrasonic power, and adsorption time, were studied. The results exhibited that the optimal conditions for maximizing the removal of Hg²⁺ were 0.02 g adsorbent dosage, pH 8, 0.4 kW ultrasonic power, 20 min adsorption time, and 30 °C adsorption temperature. The sorption mechanism of Hg²⁺ was revealed by isotherm modeling, indicating that FHAP adsorbent has a potential for Hg²⁺ removal in aqueous media with the maximum adsorption capacity being 227.27 mg g^-1. This adsorption behavior is in agreement with the Langmuir model as reflected by a satisfactory R² value of 0.9967, when the kinetics data were fitted with pseudo-second-order. Therefore, the FHAP could be an alternative adsorbent for the ultrasonic-assisted removal of Hg²⁺ at very high efficiency and within a very short period of time.

Humic acid functionalized magnetic nanomaterials for remediation of dye wastewater under ultrasonication: Application in real water samples, recycling and reuse of nanosorbents

Water pollution by industrial sector is a great problem which hampers the sustainable development goals. Dye containing water effluent poses vast challenge to clean water before its discharge in to the surrounding ecosystem. Herein, we prepared humic acid functionalized Fe₃O₄ nanosorbents through an eco-friendly route and applied for decolorization of carcinogenic dye from water. The nanosorbents was characterized by AFM, BET surface area analyzer, FTIR, SEM-EDX, TEM, TGA/DTG, VSM and XRD. Adsorption experiments were conducted by taking the appropriate amount of dye in different sources of water under ultrasonication. Adsorption process was controlled by chemisorption in nature making pseudo-second-order model most suitable. Multilayer adsorption was taking place on the active sites of nanosorbents showing applicability of Freundlich isotherm model with highest adsorbed amount of 199.986 mg g^-1 at 323 K. Rise in temperature favors the remediation of colored effluent thus positive value of ΔH° (74.234 kJ mol^-1) and negative value of ΔG° shows endothermic and spontaneous nature of adsorption system. Cationic surfactant CTAB favors the adsorption (<80%) while anionic SDS gives very low removal (>48%) because of the micelle formation at the surface of nanosorbents. Decolorization from real water samples shows that the adsorption of malachite green was 97, 90, 91, 87, and 86% for Ganga river water, tap water, well water, hand pump water and submersible water, respectively. The used Fe₃O₄/HA nanosorbents was easily recycled from water samples through 0.1 M HCl and nanosorbents was used up to five cycles with greater percentage of removal at 85%.

Nano-engineered Adsorbent for the Removal of Dyes from Water: A Review

Background:

The huge quantity of wastewater, containing poisonous and hazardous dyes, is released by various industries which pollute water in direct and indirect ways. Most of the dyes are a dangerous class of water contaminants which have affected the environment drastically. Some dyes such as congo red, rhodamine B, methylene blue, methyl violet, and crystal violet are a serious threat to human beings.

Remediation Method:

Numerous methods are available for the removal of dyes from water. Adsorption, being a superior and eco-friendly technique, has advantage of eliminating organic dyes because of the availability of materials as adsorbents. The inexpensive nanomaterials are a more attractive choice for remediation of various dyes due to their unique properties and offer an adequate pathway to adsorb any organic dye from water to overcome its hazardous effects on human health.

Results:

In this review, we have discussed the latest literature related to various types of synthesis, characterization and uses as adsorbent for highly adsorptive removal capacity of nanoparticles for organic dyes.

Conclusion:

Adsorption technology provides an attractive pathway for further research and improvement in more efficient nanoparticles, with higher adsorption capacity, for numerous dyes to eliminate the dyes discharged from various industries and thus reduce the contamination of water. Therefore, nanocomposites may contribute to future prospective water treatment process.

Nigella sativa seed based nanocomposite-MnO2/BC: An antibacterial material for photocatalytic degradation, and adsorptive removal of Methylene blue from water

Antimicrobial Nigella sativa seed-based nanocomposite, MnO₂/BC, was synthesized and utilized for the water purification through adsorption, and the photocatalytic degradation. MnO₂/BC was prepared by co-precipitation method, and characterized using FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA, and DSC techniques. The composite was investigated for inhibition of bacterial cells growth. FT-IR spectrum indicated the presence of oxygenous groups on the surface; TGA and DSC showed thermal degradation; and XRD, SEM, and TEM investigations indicated amorphous, and porous nature of MnO₂/BC having particle size of 190-220 nm. The nanocomposite inhibited the growth of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria cells in water. The adsorption of Methylene blue from water was investigated in batch method in terms of amount of MnO₂/BC, dye concentration, pH, time, and temperature. 1.0 g L^-1 of MnO₂/BC removed more than 98% of Methylene blue from aqueous solution having concentration of 10 mg L^-1 and pH 7.0 at 27 °C. The maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity of MnO₂/BC was 185.185 mg g^-1 at 45 °C. The adsorption was an endothermic process which obeyed Freundlich isotherm, and pseudo-second order kinetics. Therefore, the Methylene blue binding onto MnO₂/BC surface was site-specific partially through the weak hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interactions. The photocatalytic activity of MnO₂/BC has been investigated by degrading the Methylene blue molecules/ions in water under the sunlight and 85% of degradation was achieved during 120 min irradiation. The dye was desorbed at lower pH and regenerated MnO₂/BC was used for second cycle of Methylene blue adsorption. The results obtained for this study are much better than the previous Methylene blue adsorption studies with acid washed Black cumin seeds and MnFe₂O₄/BC for which the capacities were 73.529 mg g^-1 and 10.070 mg g^-1 at 27 °C, respectively (J. Mol. liq. 2018a, 264, 275-284; J. Clean. Prod. 2018a, 200, 996-1008).

Qualitative analysis of acid washed black cumin seeds for decolorization of water through removal of highly intense dye methylene blue

Dyes in water change the colour, taste and odour of water, are highly visible, and can be toxic and cancerous for the coloured water consumption human beings. Basic dyes particularly, methylene blue, MB has high colour intensity, shows intense colour even at low concentration, and are very toxic due to their complex structure. Instead of adsorption, removal of MB from water using various traditional treatment methods is costly and less effective. The use of bioadsorbent provides easy and low cost technique for removal of MB. For searching the adequate technique of dye removal, adsorption efficiency and mechanism of bioadsorbent can be analyzed. To this, MB removal efficiency of seeds of medicinal plant, black cumin seeds were analyzed. The data are supplied in the article.

One step synthesis of Co/Cr-codoped ZnO nanoparticle with superb adsorption properties for various anionic organic pollutants and its regeneration

Adsorption is an effective means to remove organic pollutant. However, it is challenging to prepare the adsorbents with high adsorption capacities and their regeneration. Herein, Co/Cr-codoped ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) with superb adsorption for dyes and antibiotics have been successfully synthesized by a mild solvothermal method. At the optimal Co:Cr:Zn doping moral ratio of 4:6:100, the maximum adsorption capacities of methyl orange (MO) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) on Co/Cr-codoped ZnO NPs is 1057.90 mg g^-1 and 874.46 mg g^-1, respectively. The adsorption process of the sample over MO and TC-HCl both agreed well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. Adsorption thermodynamics proved that the adsorption of MO and TC-HCl on Co/Cr-codoped ZnO NPs was a spontaneous and endothermic process. The mechanism shows that the surface of Co/Cr-codoped ZnO NPs have more positive charges, larger specific surface area and more crystal defects due to Co³⁺ and Cr³⁺ substitutes Zn²⁺ in ZnO lattice, improving their adsorption property. In addition, Co/Cr-codoped ZnO NPs have also excellent adsorption capacity for Direct Red, Congo Red, Evans Blue and Methyl Blue. More importantly, the regeneration of adsorbents was studied to achieve the reuse of materials, and avoid secondary pollution. Co/Cr-codoped ZnO NPs will be a promising choice for wastewater treatment owing to its excellent adsorption capacity and relatively low cost.

Synthesis of nanocomposites of iron oxide/gold (Fe3O4/Au) loaded on activated carbon and their application in water treatment by using sonochemistry: Optimization study

This paper focuses on the finding best operational conditions using response surface methodology (RSM) for Rhodamine123 (R123) and Disulfine blue (DSB) dyes removal by ultrasound assisted adsorption onto Au-Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles loaded on activated carbon (Au-Fe₃O₄ NPs-AC). The influences of variables such as initial R123 (X₁) and DSB concentration (X₂), pH (X₃), adsorbent mass (X₄) and sonication time (X₅) on their removal were investigated by small central composite design (CCD) under response surface methodology. The significant variables and the possible interactions among variables were investigated and estimated accordingly. The best conditions were set as: 4min, 4.0, 0.025g, 13.5 and 26.5mgL^-1 for sonication time, pH, adsorbent weight, initial R123 and DSB concentration, respectively. At above conditions, the adsorption equilibrium and kinetic follow the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, respectively. The maximum monolayer capacity (Q_max) of 71.46 and 76.38mgg^-1 for R123 and DSB show sufficiency of model for well presentation of experimental data.

Synthesis of biosurfactant‐coated magnesium oxide nanoparticles for methylene blue removal and selective Pb2+ sensing

Dyes and lead (Pb2+) are toxic compounds that can contaminant water. In this study, magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles (NPs) prepared using clove, i.e. Syzygium aromaticum extract [clove extract (CE)] were used for methylene blue (MB) removal and Pb2+ ion sensing in aqueous solution. Maximum 90% MB removal was achieved using MgO NPs. The MB adsorption on MgO NPs surface followed second‐order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm. MB dye was adsorbed as a monolayer on the surface of MgO NPs with maximum adsorption capacity, 5555 mg g−1. MgO NPs were also able to selectively detect lead (Pb2+) in 1 nM–200 µM range with 24 µM (3σ) limit of detection. So, CE prepared MgO NPs are useful for MB dye adsorption and metal ion sensing applications.

Acridine orange adsorption by zinc oxide/almond shell activated carbon composite: Operational factors, mechanism and performance optimization using central composite design and surface modeling

Zinc Oxide/Activated Carbon Powder was used for the adsorptive removal of Acridine Orange dye (AO) from aqueous solution. The prepared composite material was characterized using XRD, XPS, SEM, EDS, FTIR, XRF, Raman, BET surface area and TGA/DTA. The adsorption isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamic studies of AO onto the ZnO-AC were thoroughly analyzed. The kinetic modeling data revealed that the adsorption of AO has a good adjustment to the pseudo-second-order model. Langmuir isotherm model is better fitted for adsorption data and the maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 909.1 mg/g at 313 K. The negative values of ΔG showed the spontaneous nature of the AO adsorption onto ZnO-AC. The results indicated the adsorption was pH dependent which is mainly governed by electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding and π-π interaction. Reusability test showed a low decrease in the removal performance of ZnO-AC due to the mesopore filling mechanism confirmed by BET analysis after adsorption. Also, thermal regeneration could deposit AO dye on the surface of the composite leading to the efficiency decrease. Finally, the effect of various parameters such as pH, temperature, contact time and initial dye concentration was studied using response surface methodology (RSM). The model predicted a maximum AO removal (99.42 ± 0.57%) under the optimum conditions, which was very close to the experimental value (99.32 ± 0.18%).
