A feasible sonochemical approach to synthesize CuO@CeO2 nanomaterial and their enhanced non-enzymatic sensor performance towards neurotransmitter

Paper Sensor Modified with MoS2 for Detection of Dopamine Using a Machine-Intelligent Web App Interface

The sensing behavior of a MoS2-functionalized paper sensor towards dopamine was explored through a combinatorial approach of theoretical analysis, subsequent experimental validation, and machine-learning-driven predictive modeling of the measured electrochemical outputs. The suitability of the chosen 2D material for efficient detection of dopamine was confirmed using density functional theory. The physisorption behavior along with electrostatic interaction due to the incorporation of dopamine on MoS2 was unraveled under the purview of theoretically estimated noncovalent interaction and charge density difference plot. The theoretical Löwdin population analysis elucidates the alteration in oxidation potential of dopamine, as observed in electrochemical experiments. The electrochemical responses of the developed sensor with the spiked serum samples showed an average accuracy of more than 96% with a limit of detection of 10 nM. Furthermore, implementation of a machine-intelligent interactive web app interface improved the resolution of the sensing platform significantly with an enhanced accuracy of nearly 99%.

The applications of functional materials-based nano-formulations in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of chronic inflammation-related diseases

Chronic inflammation, in general, refers to systemic immune abnormalities most often caused by the environment or lifestyle, which is the basis for various skin diseases, autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular diseases, liver diseases, digestive diseases, cancer, and so on. Therapeutic strategies have focused on immunosuppression and anti-inflammation, but conventional approaches have been poor in enhancing the substantive therapeutic effect of drugs. Nanomaterials continue to attract attention for their high flexibility, durability and simplicity of preparation, as well as high profitability. Nanotechnology is used in various areas of clinical medicine, such as medical diagnosis, monitoring and treatment. However, some related problems cannot be ignored, including various cytotoxic and worsening inflammation caused by the nanomaterials themselves. This paper provides an overview of functional nanomaterial formulations for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of chronic inflammation-related diseases, with the intention of providing some reference for the enhancement and optimization of existing therapeutic approaches.

Effect of Cooperative Redox Property and Oxygen Vacancies on Bifunctional OER and HER Activities of Solvothermally Synthesized CeO2/CuO Composites

Herein, we report the synthesis of the CeO₂/CuO composite as a bifunctional oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst in a basic medium. The electrocatalyst with an optimum 1:1 CeO₂/CuO shows low OER and HER overpotentials of 410 and 245 mV, respectively. The Tafel slopes of 60.2 and 108.4 mV/dec are measured for OER and HER, respectively. More importantly, the 1:1 CeO₂/CuO composite electrocatalyst requires only a 1.61 V cell voltage to split water to achieve 10 mA/cm² in a two-electrode cell. The role of oxygen vacancies and the cooperative redox activity at the interface of the CeO₂ and CuO phases is explained in the light of Raman and XPS studies, which play the determining factor for the enhanced bifunctional activity of the 1:1 CeO₂/CuO composite. This work provides guidance for the optimization and design of a low-cost alternative electrocatalyst to replace the expensive noble-metal-based electrocatalyst for overall water splitting.

Green-synthesized CeO2 nanoparticles for photocatalytic, antimicrobial, antioxidant and cytotoxicity activities

Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) are a sought-after material in numerous fields due to their potential applications such as in catalysis, cancer therapy, photocatalytic degradation of pollutants, sensors, polishing agents. Green synthesis usually involves the production of CeO2 assisted by organic extracts obtained from plants, leaves, flowers, bacteria, algae, food, fruits, etc. The phytochemicals present in the organic extracts adhere to the NPs and act as reducing and/or oxidizing agents and capping agents to stabilize the NPs, modify the particle size, morphology and band gap energy of the as-synthesized materials, which would be advantageous for numerous applications. This review focuses on the green extract-mediated synthesis of CeO2 NPs and discusses the effects on CeO2 NPs of various synthesis methods that have been reported. Several photocatalytic, antimicrobial, antioxidant and cytotoxicity applications have been evaluated, compared and discussed. Future prospects are also suggested.

Perylene diimide/MXene-modified graphitic pencil electrode-based electrochemical sensor for dopamine detection

The synthesis of novel architecture comprising perylene diimide (PDI)-MXene (Ti₃C₂T_X)-integrated graphitic pencil electrode for electrochemical detection of dopamine (DA) is reported. The good electron passage between PDI-MXene resulted in an unprecedented nano-adduct bearing enhanced electrocatalytic activity with low-energy electronic transitions. The anionic groups of PDI corroborated enhanced active surface area for selective binding and robust oxidation of DA, thereby decreasing the applied potential. Meanwhile, the MXene layers acted as functional conducive support for PDI absorption via strong H-bonding. The considerable conductivity of MXene enhanced electron transportation thus increasing the sensitivity of sensing interface. The inclusively engineered nano-adduct resulted in robust DA oxidation with ultra-sensitivity (38.1 μAμM^-1cm^-2), and low detection limit (240 nM) at very low oxidation potential (-0.135 V). Moreover, it selectively signaled DA in the presence of physiological interferents with wide linearity (100-1000 μM). The developed transducing interface performed well in human serum samples with RSD (0.1 to 0.4%) and recovery (98.6 to 100.2%) corroborating the viability of the practical implementation of this integrated system. Ultrasonic-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of cobalt oxide/nitrogen-doped graphene oxide hybrid as oxygen reduction reaction catalyst for Al-air battery

A persistent ultrasound-assisted hydrothermal method has been developed to prepare cobalt oxide incorporated nitrogen-doped graphene (Co₃O₄/N-GO) hybrids. The electrochemical behaviors and catalytic activity of the prepared hybrids have been systematically investigated as cathode materials for Al-air battery. The results show that ultrasonication can promote the yield ratio of Co₃O₄ from 63.1% to 70.6%. The prepared Co₃O₄/N-GO hybrid with ultrasonication exhibits better ORR activity over that without ultrasonication. The assembled Al-air battery using the ultrasonicated Co₃O₄/N-GO hybrid exhibited an average working voltage of 1.02 V in 4 M KOH electrolyte at 60 mA∙cm^-2, approximately 60 mV higher than that using hybrid without ultrasonication. This should be attributed to large number density of fine Co₃O₄ particles growing on the dispersed GO sheets under the persistent ultrasonication. The related ultrasonic mechanism has been discussed in details.

Green synthesis of nonprecious metal-doped copper hydroxide nanoparticles for construction of a dopamine sensor

Background: Copper oxide nanoparticles doped with nonprecious metal species (Ni and Mn) were synthesized. Method: A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified by drop-casting of nanostructure suspensions, constructing Ni:Cu(OH)₂/GCE, Mn:Cu(OH)₂/GCE and Cu(OH)₂/GCE. Results: The voltammetric oxidation of dopamine (DA) by the constructed electrodes confirmed that the electrocatalytic oxidation of DA is a reversible, pH-dependent, diffusion-controlled process; the best response was obtained by Mn:Cu(OH)₂/GCE. A sensitive calibration graph (0.664 μA/μM) was produced for DA in the concentration range of 0.3-10.0 μM, with a detection limit of 79 nM using Mn:Cu(OH)₂/GCE. Conclusion: The Mn:Cu(OH)₂/GCE possessed an accurate response toward DA with an acceptable selectivity, stability and antifouling effect, revealing the applicability of the Mn:Cu(OH)₂/GCE for DA analysis in biological samples.

Electrochemical dual signal sensing platform for the simultaneous determination of dopamine, uric acid and glucose based on copper and cerium bimetallic carbon nanocomposites

A highly sensitive electrochemical sensor for the simultaneous dual signal determination of dopamine (DA), uric acid (UA) and glucose (Glu) has been obtained using nanocomposites based on the copper and cerium bimetallic nanoparticles and carbon nanomaterials of graphene and single-walled carbon nanotubes in the presence of Tween 20 (GR-SWCNT-Ce-Cu-Tween 20) modified glassy carbon electrode. The surface morphology of the nanocomposites was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the electrochemical behavior of the sensor was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) with potassium ferricyanide as probe. In the coexistence system of DA, UA and Glu, three clear and well-isolated voltammetric peaks were obtained by CV and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and oxidation peak currents of DA and UA are positively correlated with their concentrations respectively, while the peak current of Glu is negatively correlated with its concentration. Linearity was obtained in the ranges of 0.1-100 µM for dopamine, 0.08-100 µM for uric acid and 1-1000 µM for glucose with DPV, and the detection limits (S/N = 3) of 0.0072 µM, 0.0063 µM, and 0.095 µM for DA, UA and Glu, respectively. The method was successfully applied to the determination of DA, UA and Glu in blood serum samples, which provided a reference for further sensor research.

CuO-Ga2O3 Thin Films as a Gas-Sensitive Material for Acetone Detection

The p-n heterostructures of CuO-Ga₂O₃ obtained by magnetron sputtering technology in a fully reactive mode (deposition in pure oxygen) were tested under exposure to low acetone concentrations. After deposition, the films were annealed at previously confirmed conditions (400 °C/4 h/synthetic air) and further investigated by utilization of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray reflectivity (XRR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The gas-sensing behavior was tested in the air/acetone atmosphere in the range of 0.1–1.25 ppm, as well as at various relative humidity (RH) levels (10–85%). The highest responses were obtained for samples based on the CuO-Ga₂O₃ (4% at. Ga).
