Spatial regulation of hydrogel polymerization reaction using ultrasound-driven streaming vortex

Ultrasound is gaining attention as an alternative tool to regulate chemical processes due to its advantages such as high cost-effectiveness, rapid response, and contact-free operation. Previous studies have demonstrated that acoustic bubble cavitation can generate energy to synthesize functional materials. In this study, we introduce a method to control the spatial distribution of physical and chemical properties of hydrogels by using an ultrasound-mediated particle manipulation technique. We developed a surface acoustic wave device that can localize micro-hydrogel particles, which are formed during gelation, in a hydrogel solution. The hydrogel fabricated with the application of surface acoustic waves exhibited gradients in mechanical, mass transport, and structural properties. We demonstrated that the gel having the property gradients could be utilized as a cell-culture substrate dictating cellular shapes, which is beneficial for interfacial tissue engineering. The acoustic method and fabricated hydrogels with property gradients can be applied to design flexible polymeric materials for soft robotics, biomedical sensors, or bioelectronics applications.

Bubble shape instability of acoustic cavitation in molten metal used in ultrasonic casting

In this study, we estimated the equilibrium bubble size of acoustic cavitation in a molten metal, which is basic information in ultrasonic casting. For this, the bubble shape instability of acoustic cavitation in the melt was numerically investigated by solving the Keller-Miksis equation and dynamic equation of the distortion amplitude. The acoustic cavitation bubbles are more stable in aluminum and magnesium melts than in water, and the parametric instability mainly determines the bubble stability at 20-160 kHz in molten metals. However, the afterbounce instability does not significantly affect the bubble stability in molten metals owing to the small number of bubble oscillations after the first rapid compression, and the distortion amplitude cannot grow significantly after the first compression. The bubbles in the melt become more unstable with an increase in the ultrasonic frequency owing to the corresponding increase in the bubble wall velocity. Through this stability analysis, we can estimate that the stable bubble size in the aluminum or magnesium melt is approximately three or four times larger than that in water at the same ultrasonic pressure amplitude.

The advance of ultrasound-enabled diagnostics and therapeutics

Point-of-care ultrasound demonstrates significant potential in biomedical research due to its noninvasive, real-time visualization, cost-effectiveness, and other biological benefits. Ultrasound irradiation can precisely control the mechanical and physicochemical effects on pathogenic lesions, enabling real-time visualization, tunable tissue penetration depth, and therapeutic applications. This review summarizes recent advancements in ultrasound-enabled diagnostics and therapeutics, focusing on mechanochemical effects that can be directly integrated into biomedical applications. Additionally, the structure-functionality relationships of sonotheranostic nanoplatforms are systematically discussed, providing insights into the underlying biological effects. Finally, the limitations of current ultrasonic medicine are discussed, along with potential expansions to facilitate patient-centered translations.

Holographic direct sound printing

Direct sound printing (DSP), an alternative additive manufacturing process driven by sonochemical polymerization, has traditionally been confined to a single acoustic focal region, resulting in a voxel-by-voxel printing approach. To overcome this limitation, we introduce holographic direct sound printing (HDSP), where acoustic holograms, storing cross-sectional images of the desired parts, pattern acoustic waves to induce regional cavitation bubbles and on-demand regional polymerization. HDSP outperforms DSP in terms of printing speed by one order of magnitude and yields layerless printed structures. In our HDSP implementation, the hologram remains stationary while the printing platform moves along a three-dimensional path using a robotic arm. We present sono-chemiluminescence and high-speed imaging experiments to thoroughly investigate HDSP and demonstrate its versatility in applications such as remote ex-vivo in-body printing and complex robot trajectory planning. We showcase multi-object and multi-material printing and provide a comprehensive process characterization, including the effects of hologram design and manufacturing on the HDSP process, polymerization progression tracking, porosity tuning, and robotic trajectory computation. Our HDSP method establishes the integration of acoustic holography in DSP and related applications.

Ultrasonic reactor set-ups and applications: A review

Sonochemistry contributes to green science as it uses less hazardous solvents and methods to carry out a reaction. In this review, different reactor designs are discussed in detail providing the necessary knowledge for implementing various processes. The main characteristics of ultrasonic batch systems are their low cost and enhanced mixing; however, they still have immense drawbacks such as their scalability. Continuous flow reactors offer enhanced production yields as the limited cognition which governs the design of these sonoreactors, renders them unusable in industry. In addition, microstructured sonoreactors show improved heat and mass transfer phenomena due to their small size but suffer though from clogging. The optimisation of various conditions of regulations, such as temperature, frequency of ultrasound, intensity of irradiation, sonication time, pressure amplitude and reactor design, it is also discussed to maximise the production rates and yields of reactions taking place in sonoreactors. The optimisation of operating parameters and the selection of the reactor system must be considered to each application's requirements. A plethora of different applications that ultrasound waves can be implemented are in the biochemical and petrochemical engineering, the chemical synthesis of materials, the crystallisation of organic and inorganic substances, the wastewater treatment, the extraction processes and in medicine. Sonochemistry must overcome challenges that consider the scalability of processes and its embodiment into commercial applications, through extensive studies for understanding the designs and the development of computational tools to implement timesaving and efficient theoretical studies.

Effect of Multi-Mode Divergent Ultrasound Pretreatment on Hardness, Microstructure and Digestion of Acid-Induced Whey Protein Gels

Whey protein was pretreated with multi-frequency ultrasound in mono-, dual-, and tri-frequency modes. The effect of multi-frequency ultrasound pretreatment on the hardness, chemical forces, and microstructure of acid-induced whey protein gel was investigated. Whey protein gels pretreated with dual- and tri-frequency ultrasound showed higher hardness (p < 0.05) and a denser network than mono-frequency ultrasound and control. Moreover, they had higher hydrophobic interaction and lower disulfide bonds than the control (p < 0.05). The effect of gel properties on digestion was evaluated using an in vitro static model. Whey protein gels pretreated with dual- and tri-frequency ultrasound had a higher proportion of large fragments in the oral boluses than in the control. Large fragments (>3.35 mm) in those samples were resistant to gastric digestion. Moreover, the tri-frequency ultrasound pretreatment of whey protein gel released the least free amino group during gastric digestion. In contrast, whey protein gel with the mono-frequency ultrasound pretreatment released the highest amount of free amino acid group during intestinal digestion. Findings from this study suggests that gel hardness and network density could modulate the digestion behaviors of protein gels.

Sonochemical degradation of PFAS in ion exchange regeneration wastes

One of the primary technologies currently being deployed for the removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from water is ion exchange (IX). For regenerable IX resins, concentrated PFAS in the resulting spent brine and/or still bottoms requires further treatment. This research demonstrated that PFAS in spent brine and still bottoms can be effectively degraded sonochemically at 1000 kHz. Overall, PFAS degradation was negatively impacted by high total organic carbon (TOC) and residual methanol (MeOH) solvent (up to 50 g/kg; 5% w:w), but was enhanced by the high chloride. The addition of caustic (up to 1 N NaOH) partially mitigated the inhibition by TOC and MeOH. Sonochemical degradation of individual PFAS compounds resulted in significant mineralization to form inorganic fluoride, but small quantities of volatile organic fluorine species (VOF) were noted. This is believed to be the first report of sonochemical degradation of PFAS in ion exchange regeneration wastes, and indicates the possibility for the application of this technology as part of a complete PFAS capture and destruction treatment train.

Quantifying the chemical activity of cavitation bubbles in a cluster

Acoustic cavitation bubbles drive chemical processes through their dynamic lifecycle in liquids. These bubbles are abundant within sonoreactors, where their behavior becomes complex within clusters. This study quantifies their chemical effects within well-defined clusters using a new laser-based method. We focus a laser beam into water, inducing a breakdown that generates a single cavitation bubble. This bubble undergoes multiple collapses, releasing several shockwaves. These shockwaves propagate into the surrounding medium, leading to the formation of secondary bubbles near a reflector, separated from the input laser beam. We evaluate the chemical activity of these bubble clusters of various sizes by KI dosimetry, and to gain insights into their dynamics, we employ high-speed imaging. Hydrophone measurements show that conversion from focused shockwave energy to chemical reactions increases to a maximum of 16.5%. Additional increases in shockwave energy result in denser bubble clusters and a slightly decreased conversion rate, falling to 14.9%, highlighting the key role of bubble dynamics in the transformation of mechanical to chemical energy and as a result in the efficiency of the sonoreactors. The size and frequency of bubble collapses influence the cluster's chemical reactivity. We introduce a correlation for predicting the conversion rate of cluster energy to chemical energy, based on the cluster's energy density. The maximum conversion rate occurs at a cluster energy density of 2500 J/L, linked to a cluster with an average bubble diameter of 91 μ m, a bubble density of 3500 bubbles/ml, and a bubble-to-bubble distance ratio of 8.

Ultrasound activated probe for disease imaging and therapy In-Vivo

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is the use of ultrasound (US) to excite sonosensitizers to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) to induce tumor cell death, thereby achieving therapeutic purposes. Based on the strong tissue penetration ability of ultrasound, SDT can realize the treatment of deeper tumors, and it is targeted, can be specifically concentrated at the tumor site, and has little impact on surrounding normal tissues. It has broad clinical transformation prospects. Therefore, sonosensitizers are the key to SDT, and the exploration of sonosensitizers with excellent therapeutic performance has received great attention. We reviewed the development of ultrasound-inspired sound sensitizers for imaging and treatment. First, different types of sonosensitizers are introduced, the construction and performance of inorganic, organic and hybrid types of sonosensitizers are evaluated, followed by a review of different image-guided SDT, and finally the key problems and solutions in this field are discussed in detail.

Ultrasonic cavitation: Tackling organic pollutants in wastewater

Environmental pollution and energy shortages are global issues that significantly impact human progress. Multiple methods have been proposed for treating industrial and dyes containing wastewater. Ultrasonic degradation has emerged as a promising and innovative technology for organic pollutant degradation. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the factors affecting ultrasonic degradation and thoroughly examines the technique of acoustic cavitation. Furthermore, this study summarizes the fundamental theories and mechanisms underlying cavitation, emphasizing its efficacy in the remediation of various water pollutants. Furthermore, potential synergies between ultrasonic cavitation and other commonly used technologies are also explored. Potential challenges are identified and future directions for the development of ultrasonic degradation and ultrasonic cavitation technologies are outlined.

Ultrasonication for honey processing and preservation: A brief overview

Honey is a food product consumed all over the world. Besides its nutritional properties, honey presents antibacterial, antioxidant, and wound-healing properties. To ensure that the final product meets qualitative and microbiological standards, honey treatment is of great importance. Conventional honey treatment is based on the heating of honey samples for decrystallization and bacteria and yeast inactivation. However, conventional heating can cause negative effects on honey quality, such as the formation of toxic compounds, reduction of enzyme activity, and loss of antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The application of ultrasonic waves has demonstrated interesting effects on honey processing. Ultrasound (US) treatment can lead to the fragmentation of glucose crystals in crystalized honey and has little effect on its properties. In addition to inactivating microorganisms, US-assisted honey processing also preserves phenolic compounds content and antimicrobial properties. However, there is still limited information about honey sonication. The aim of the present review is to comprehensively show the possibilities of US application in honey processing and its effects on honey properties.

Effects of alcohols and dissolved gases on sonochemical generation of hydrogen in a 300 kHz sonoreactor

The sonochemical generation of hydrogen (H2) was investigated using various water/alcohol solutions under argon (Ar) 100 % in a 300 kHz sonoreactor. Five types of alcohols-methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, n-propanol, and n-butanol-were used at various concentrations (0 - 100 % v/v). The H2 generation rate in water was 0.31 μmol/min in the absence of alcohols. The H2 generation rate increased, peaked, and then decreased as the alcohol concentration increased. The concentrations used for the peak H2 generation were 5 %, 1 %, 0.5 %, 0.5 %, and 0.1 % for methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, n-propanol, and n-butanol, respectively. The highest generation rate (5.46 μmol/min) was obtained for methanol 5 % among all conditions in this study, and no H2 was detected for 100 % alcohol concentrations. The reason for the enhancement of the sonochemical H2 generation by the addition of alcohols might be due to strong scavenging effect of alcohols for sonochemically generated oxidizing radicals and vigorous reactions of alcohol molecules and their derivatives with H radicals. No significant correlations were found between the H2 generation rates and physicochemical properties of the alcohols in any of the data in this study. As alcohol concentration increased, the calorimetric power decreased. This indicates that the calorimetric power does not represent the degree of sonochemical reactions in the water/alcohol mixtures. The effect of oxygen (O2) content in the dissolved gases on the generation of H2O2 (representing sonochemical oxidation activity) and H2 (representing sonochemical reduction activity) was investigated using Ar/O2 mixtures for water, methanol 5 % and n-propanol 0.5 %. In water, the highest H2O2 generation was obtained for Ar/O2 (50:50), which is similar to previous research results. However, the H2O2 generation increased as the O2 content increased. In addition, H2 generation decreased as the O2 content increased under all liquid conditions (water, methanol, and n-propanol).

Synergistic Enzyme-Mimetic Catalysis-Based Non-Thermal Sonocavitation and Sonodynamic Therapy for Efficient Hypoxia Relief and Cancer Ablation

Non-invasive cancer treatment strategies that enable local non-thermal ablation, hypoxia relief, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production to achieve transiently destroying tumor tissue and long-term killing tumor cells would greatly facilitate their clinical applications. However, continuously generating oxygen cavitation nuclei, reducing the transient cavitation sound intensity threshold, relieving hypoxia, and improving its controllability in the ablation area still remains a significant challenge. Here, in this work, an Mn-coordinated polyphthalocyanine sonocavitation agent (Mn-SCA) with large d-π-conjugated network and atomic Mn-N sites is identified for the non-thermal sonocavitation and sonodynamic therapy in the liver cancer ablation. In the tumor microenvironment, the catalytical generation of oxygen assists cavitation formation and generates microjets to ablate liver cancer tissue and relieve hypoxia, this work reports for the first time to utilize the enzymatic properties of Mn-SCA to lower the cavitation threshold in situ. Moreover, under pHIFU irradiation, high reactive oxygen species (ROS) production can be achieved. The two merits in liver cancer ablation are demonstrated by cell destruction and high tumor inhibition efficiency. This work will help deepen the understanding of cavitation ablation and the sonodynamic mechanisms related to the nanostructures and guide the design of sonocavitation agents with high ROS production for solid tumor ablation.

Recent Advances for Dynamic-Based Therapy of Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease, which may lead to high morbidity and mortality. Currently, the clinical treatment strategy for AS is administering drugs and performing surgery. However, advanced therapy strategies are urgently required because of the deficient therapeutic effects of current managements. Increased number of energy conversion-based organic or inorganic materials has been used in cancer and other major disease treatments, bringing hope to patients with the development of nanomedicine and materials. These treatment strategies employ specific nanomaterials with specific own physiochemical properties (external stimuli: light or ultrasound) to promote foam cell apoptosis and cholesterol efflux. Based on the pathological characteristics of vulnerable plaques, energy conversion-based nano-therapy has attracted increasing attention in the field of anti-atherosclerosis. Therefore, this review focuses on recent advances in energy conversion-based treatments. In addition to summarizing the therapeutic effects of various techniques, the regulated pathological processes are highlighted. Finally, the challenges and prospects for further development of dynamic treatment for AS are discussed.

Individual and interactive effect of ultrasound pre-treatment on drying kinetics and biochemical qualities of food: A critical review

One of the earliest and most prevalent processing methods to increase the shelf-life of foods is drying. In recent years, there has been an increased demand to improve product quality while lowering processing times, expenses, and energy usage in the drying process. Pre-treatments are therefore effectively used before drying to enhance heat and mass transfer, increase drying efficiency, and lessen degradation of final product quality. When food is dried, changes are expected in its taste, color, texture, and physical, chemical, and microbial properties. This has led to the need for research and development into the creation of new and effective pre-treatment technologies including high-pressure processing, pulsed electric field, ultraviolet irradiation, and ultrasound. Sound waves that have a frequency >20 kHz, which is above the upper limit of the audible frequency range, are referred to as "ultrasound". Ultrasonication (US) is a non-thermal technology, that has mechanical, cavitational, and sponge effects on food materials. Ultrasound pre-treatment enhances the drying characteristics by producing microchannels in the food tissue, facilitating internal moisture diffusion in the finished product, and lowering the barrier to water migration. The goal of ultrasound pre-treatment is to save processing time, conserve energy, and enhance the quality, safety, and shelf-life of food products. This study presents a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals of ultrasound, its mechanism, and how the individual effects of ultrasonic pre-treatment and the interactive effects of ultrasound-assisted technologies affect the drying kinetics, bioactive components, color, textural, and sensory qualities of food. The difficulties that can arise when using ultrasound technology as a drying pretreatment approach, such as inadequate management of heat, the employment of ultrasound at a limited frequency, and the generation of free radicals, have also been explained.
