Abstract
In this study, lignocellulose-degrading microbes were added to cattle manure and bagasse co-compost through initial- and two-stage inoculations. A comparison was made between the effects of the two inoculations on compost humification parameters, and an investigation was conducted into the dynamic succession of the microbial community, microbial interactions, and amino acid metabolism to uncover the underlying mechanisms. The results showed that two-stage inoculation increased the humus (HS) and humic acid (HA) contents to 86.59 mg/g and 25.80 mg/g, respectively, and achieved a germination index (GI) of 128.77%. At the genus level, it stimulated the growth of Corynebacterium, Thermobifida, and Aspergillus during the high-temperature period, and Luteimonas, Pseudomonas, Actinomadura, and Rhizopus during the maturity period. Two-stage inoculation increased the stability of the bacterial network and microbial cooperation within the fungal network. Additionally, from the cooling to the maturity period, it boosted ten amino acid synthesis pathways. In conclusion, two-stage inoculation is an effective method to promote the maturation and stabilization of co-compost.

Abstract
Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) in Taihu Lake pose a persistent environmental challenge. This study investigated the inhibitory effects of artemisinin algaecide (AMA) on cyanobacteria in Taihu Lake and assessed its impact on nutrients, as well as the structures of particle-attached (PA) and free-living (FL) bacterial communities and potential ecological mechanisms. The results indicated that A-3 (0.8 g artemisinin/L) effectively inhibited CyanoHABs (inhibition rate = 93 %) and significantly increased the alpha diversity of PA and FL bacterial communities during the stationary phase, thereby promoting the proliferation of algicidal bacteria (AB) (e.g., Acinetobacter, Stenotrophomonas, and Exiguobacterium) and heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) bacteria (e.g., Acinetobacter, Stenotrophomonas, and Bacillus) through the utilization of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from the dead cyanobacteria. This proliferation enhanced nitrogen metabolism and increased the abundance of nitrogen-cycling functional genes, improving nutrient cycling and enhancing system stability. The increased abundance of AB continuously suppressed cyanobacteria, while the proliferation of HN-AD bacteria removed nitrogen and phosphorus from the water, thus limiting nutrients available for cyanobacterial growth. Our findings demonstrate that AMA effectively inhibits CyanoHABs and prevents secondary blooms, providing a scientific foundation for the widespread application in cyanobacterial management, enhancing the effectiveness and sustainability of CyanoHAB control efforts.

Abstract
Kiwi waste from the calibration process is a major environmental problem of kiwi production due to landfill deposition. This work aims to contribute to the agronomic use of recycled kiwi waste through composting. With this objective, a composting experiment was carried out with kiwi fruit waste mixed with 5%, 10% and 20% (fresh weight) of wheat straw from bundles used to protect kiwifruit trunks from frost, as abulking agent to increase aeration, in the piles 5S, 10S and 20S, respectively. The highest temperatures for piles 5S and 10S were above 60°C, whereas the temperature did not reach 40°C in the pile with the highest straw content (20S) because the aeration increased heat loss in addition to increased C/N ratio of this pile. Also, the amount of organic matter mineralized decreased with increasing amount of straw because of the high C/N ratio of the straw. The highest total N (29.7 g kg-1) and the lowest C/N ratio (13) of the compost with 5% of straw is important from the agricultural point of view to promote N availability. In contrast, the high electrical conductivity (4.6 dS m-1) of this compost increases the risk of salt accumulation in the soil. Our results show that the compost with 10% straw, with high degree of maturation, absence of poor hygiene indicators as coliforms and pathogens as Salmonella sp., high organic matter content and rich in nutrients, together with the adequate compost pH and low electrical conductivity improves compost quality.

Abstract
Taking amphibians as island models, we examined the effects of interspecific interaction on the diversity and stability of microbial ecological. As skin area increased, the diversity and stability of skin microbes decreased, but the strength of negative interactions increased significantly. In contrast, as gut area increased, the diversity and stability of gut microbes increased, but the strength of interactions remained constant. These results indicate that microbial interactions are affected by habitat properties. When living in fluctuating environments without strong filtering, microorganisms can enhance their negative interactions with other taxa by changing the pH of their surroundings. In contrast, the pH of the gut is relatively stable, and colonized microorganisms cannot alter the gut pH and inhibit other colonizers. This study demonstrates that in the field of microbiology, diversity and stability are predominantly influenced by the intensity of interspecies interactions. The findings in this study deepen our understanding of microbial diversity and stability and provide a mechanistic link between species interactions, biodiversity, and stability in microbial ecosystems.

Abstract
The massive proliferation of Microcystis threatens freshwater ecosystems and degrades water quality globally. Understanding the mechanisms that contribute to Microcystis growth is crucial for managing Microcystis blooms. The lifestyles of bacteria can be classified generally into two groups: particle-attached (PA; > 3 µm) and free-living (FL; 0.2-3.0 µm). However, little is known about the response of PA and FL bacteria to Microcystis blooms. Using 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing, we investigated the stability, assembly process, and co-occurrence patterns of PA and FL bacterial communities during distinct bloom stages. PA bacteria were phylogenetically different from their FL counterparts. Microcystis blooms substantially influenced bacterial communities. The time decay relationship model revealed that Microcystis blooms might increase the stability of both PA and FL bacterial communities. A contrasting community assembly mechanism was observed between the PA and FL bacterial communities. Throughout Microcystis blooms, homogeneous selection was the major assembly process that impacted the PA bacterial community, whereas drift explained much of the turnover of the FL bacterial community. Both PA and FL bacterial communities could be separated into modules related to different phases of Microcystis blooms. Microcystis blooms altered the assembly process of PA and FL bacterial communities. PA bacterial community appeared to be more responsive to Microcystis blooms than FL bacteria. Decomposition of Microcystis blooms may enhance cooperation among bacteria. Our findings highlight the importance of studying bacterial lifestyles to understand their functions in regulating Microcystis blooms. Abstract
Microbial activity and interaction are the important driving factors in the start-up phase of food waste composting at low temperature. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of inoculating Bacillus licheniformis on the degradation of organic components and the potential microbe-driven mechanism from the aspects of organic matter degradation, enzyme activity, microbial community interaction, and microbial metabolic function. The results showed that after inoculating B. licheniformis, temperature increased to 47.8°C on day 2, and the degradation of readily degraded carbohydrates (RDC) increased by 31.2%, and the bioheat production increased by 16.5%. There was an obvious enhancement of extracellular enzymes activities after inoculation, especially amylase activity, which increased by 7.68 times on day 4. The inoculated B. licheniformis colonized in composting as key genus in the start-up phase. Modular network analysis and Mantel test indicated that inoculation drove the cooperation between microbial network modules who were responsible for various organic components (RDC, lipid, protein, and lignocellulose) degradation in the start-up phase. Metabolic function prediction suggested that carbohydrate metabolisms including starch and sucrose metabolism, glycolysis / gluconeogenesis, pyruvate metabolism, etc., were improved by increasing the abundance of related functional genes after inoculation. In conclusion, inoculating B. licheniformis accelerated organic degradation by driving the cooperation between microbial network modules and enhancing microbial metabolism in the start-up phase of composting.

Abstract
The effective degradation of recalcitrant lignocellulose has emerged as a bottleneck for the humification of compost, and strategies are required to improve the efficiency of bagasse composting. Bioaugmentation is a promising method for promoting compost maturation and improving the quality of final compost. In this study, the bioaugmentation effects of microbial inoculants on humic acid (HA) formation during lignocellulosic composting were explored. In the inoculated group, the maximum temperature was increased to 72.5 °C, and the phenol-protein condensation and Maillard humification pathways were enhanced, thus increasing the HA content by 43.85%. After inoculation, the intensity of the microbial community interactions increased, particularly for fungi (1.4-fold). Macrogenomic analysis revealed that inoculation enriched thermophilic bacteria and lignocellulose-degrading fungi and increased the activity of carbohydrate-active enzymes and related metabolic functions, which effectively disrupted the recalcitrant structure of lignocellulose to achieve a high humification degree. Spearman correlation analysis indicated that Stappia of the Proteobacteria phylum, Ilumatobacter of the Actinomycetes phylum, and eleven genera of Ascomycota were the main HA producers. This study provides new ideas for bagasse treatment and recycling and realizing the comprehensive use of resources.

Abstract
The disposal of Chinese medicinal herbal residues (CMHRs) derived from Chinese medicine extraction poses a significant environmental challenge. Aerobic composting presents a sustainable treatment method, yet optimizing nutrient conversion remains a critical concern. This study investigated the effect and mechanism of biochar addition on nitrogen and phosphorus transformation to enhance the efficacy and quality of compost products. The findings reveal that incorporating biochar considerably enhanced the process of nutrient conversion. Specifically, biochar addition promoted the retention of bioavailable organic nitrogen and reduced nitrogen loss by 28.1 %. Meanwhile, adding biochar inhibited the conversion of available phosphorus to non-available phosphorus while enhancing its conversion to moderately available phosphorus, thereby preserving phosphorus availability post-composting. Furthermore, the inclusion of biochar altered microbial community structure and fostered organic matter retention and humus formation, ultimately affecting the modification of nitrogen and phosphorus forms. Structural equation modeling revealed that microbial community had a more pronounced impact on bioavailable organic nitrogen, while humic acid exerted a more significant effect on phosphorus availability. This research provides a viable approach and foundation for regulating the levels of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients during composting, serving as a valuable reference for the development of sustainable utilization technologies pertaining to CMHRs.

Abstract
Microalgae, including cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae, are hotspots of primary production and play a critical role in global carbon cycling. However, these species often form blooms that poses a threat to aquatic ecosystems. Although the use of bacteria-derived cyanocides is regarded as an environmentally friendly method for controlling cyanobacterial blooms, only a few studies have examined their potential impact on ecosystems. This study is the first to explore the response of particle-attached (PA) and free-living (FL) bacteria to the dynamics of microalgal communities induced by the biological cyanocide paucibactin A. The microalgal community dynamics were divided into two distinct phases [phase I (days 0-2) and phase II (days 3-7)]. In phase I, paucibactin A caused a sudden decrease in the cyanobacterial concentration. Phase II was characterized by increased growth of eukaryotic microalgae (Scenedesmus, Pediastrum, Selenastrum, and Coelastrum). The stability of the bacterial community and the contribution of stochastic processes to community assembly were more pronounced in phase II than in phase I. The microalgal dynamics triggered by paucibactin A coincided with the succession of the PA and FL bacterial communities. The lysis of cyanobacteria in phase I favored the growth of microbial organic matter degraders in both the PA (e.g., Aeromonas and Rheinheimera) and FL (e.g., Vogesella) bacterial communities. In phase II, Lacibacter, Phycisphaeraceae, and Hydrogenophaga in the PA bacterial community and Lacibacter, Peredibacter, and Prosthecobacter in the FL bacterial community showed increased relative abundances. Overall, the FL bacterial community exhibited greater sensitivity to the two sequential processes compared with the PA bacterial community. These results highlight the need for studies evaluating the impact of biological cyanocides on aquatic ecosystems when used to control natural cyanobacterial blooms.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 on the bacterial community and nitrogen metabolism genes in the aerobic composting of pig manure. The experimental treatments were set up as control (C), 1% Ca(H2PO4)2 + 2% MgSO4 (CaPM1), and 1.5% Ca(H2PO4)2 + 3% MgSO4 (CaPM2), which were used at the end of composting for potting trials. The results showed that Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 played an excellent role in retaining nitrogen and increasing the alkali-hydrolyzed nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), and available potassium (AK) contents of the composts. Adding Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 changed the microbial community structure of the compost. The microorganisms associated with nitrogen retention were activated. The complexity of the microbial network was enhanced. Genetic prediction analysis showed that the addition of Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 reduced the accumulation of nitroso-nitrogen and the process of denitrification. At the same time, despite the reduction of genes related to nitrogen fixation, the conversion of ammonia to nitrogenous organic compounds was promoted and the stability of nitrogen was increased. Mantel test analysis showed that Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 can affect nitrogen transformation-related bacteria and thus indirectly affect nitrogen metabolism genes by influencing the temperature, pH, and organic matter (OM) of the compost and also directly affected nitrogen metabolism genes through PO43- and Mg2+. The pot experiment showed that composting with 1.5% Ca(H2PO4)2 + 3% MgSO4 produced the compost product that improved the growth yield and nutrient content of cilantro and increased the fertility of the soil. In conclusion, Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 reduces the loss of nitrogen from compost, activates nitrogen-related bacteria and genes in the thermophilic phase of composting, and improves the fertilizer efficiency of compost products. Abstract
Methane metabolism, driven by methanogenic and methanotrophic microorganisms, plays a pivotal role in the carbon cycle. As seawater intrusion and soil salinization rise due to global environmental shifts, understanding how salinity affects methane emissions, especially in deep strata, becomes imperative. Yet, insights into stratigraphic methane release under varying salinity conditions remain sparse. Here we investigate the effects of salinity on methane metabolism across terrestrial and coastal strata (15-40 m depth) through in situ and microcosm simulation studies. Coastal strata, exhibiting a salinity level five times greater than terrestrial strata, manifested a 12.05% decrease in total methane production, but a staggering 687.34% surge in methane oxidation, culminating in 146.31% diminished methane emissions. Salinity emerged as a significant factor shaping the methane-metabolizing microbial community's dynamics, impacting the methanogenic archaeal, methanotrophic archaeal, and methanotrophic bacterial communities by 16.53%, 27.25%, and 22.94%, respectively. Furthermore, microbial interactions influenced strata system methane metabolism. Metabolic pathway analyses suggested Atribacteria JS1's potential role in organic matter decomposition, facilitating methane production via Methanofastidiosales. This study thus offers a comprehensive lens to comprehend stratigraphic methane emission dynamics and the overarching factors modulating them.

Abstract
Accumulation of persistent organic pollutants polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil has become a global problem. Composting is considered one of the more economical methods of soil remediation and is important for the resourceful use of wastes. Agroforestry waste is produced in huge amounts and is utilized at low rates, hence there is an urgent need to manage it. Here, leaf (LVS) or rice straw (SVS) was co-composting with aged contaminated soil to investigate bacteria interaction to PAHs degradation and humus formation. The degradation rate of high molecular weight PAHs (HMW-PAHs) in LVS and SVS reached 58.9% and 52.5%, and the low molecular weight PAHs (LMW-PAHs) were 77.5% and 65%. Meanwhile, the humus increased by 44.8% and 60.5% in LVS and SVS at the end of co-composting. The topological characteristics and community assembly of the bacterial community showed that LVS had higher complexity and more keystones than SVS, suggesting that LVS might more beneficial for the degradation of PAHs. The stability of the co-occurrence network and stochastic processes (dispersal limitation) dominated community assembly made SVS beneficial for humus formation. Mantel test and structural equation models indicated that the transformation of organic matter was important for PAHs degradation and humus formation. Degradation of HMW-PAHs led to bacterial succession, which affected the formation of precursors and ultimately increased the humus content. This study provided potential technology support for improving the quality of agroforestry organic waste composting and degrading PAHs in aged contaminated soil.

Abstract
Proper composting treatment of poultry manure waste is recommended before its use as a fertilizer. This involves many bioprocesses driven by microorganisms. Therefore, it is important to understand microbial mechanisms behind these bioprocesses in manure composting systems. Many efforts have been made to study the microbial community structure and diversity in these systems using high-throughput sequencing techniques. However, the dynamics of microbial interaction and functionality, especially for key microbial functional guilds, are not yet fully understood. To address these knowledge gaps, we collected samples from a 150-day industrial chicken manure composting system and performed the microbial network analysis based on the sequencing data. We found that the family Bacillaceae and genus Bacillus might play important roles in organic matter biodegradation at the mesophilic/thermophilic phases. Genera Virgibacillus, Gracilibacillus, Nocardiopsis, Novibacillus, and Bacillaceae_BM62 were identified as the key ones for humic acid synthesis at the mature phases. These findings improve our understanding about the fundamental mechanisms behind manure composting and can aid the development of microbial agents to promote manure composting performance.

Abstract
This trial aimed to investigate the influence of graded replacing fish meal (D1: 0.00%, D2: 27.27%, and D3: 54.55%) with mixed protein ingredients (i.e., chicken meal, krill meal, fermented soybean meal, and soy protein concentrate) on the growth performance, muscle nutritional composition, blood biochemical indices, gut bacterial community, and transcriptome of Chinese perch. Two hundred seventy Chinese perch were divided into three groups (90 per group) and the diet lasted for 56 days. Results showed that the weight gain rate and specific growth rate were significantly lower, and the feed conversion ratio was significantly higher in the D3 group than in fish fed D1 (P < 0.05), with no significant differences between the D1 and D2 groups (P > 0.05). The muscle crude protein content was highest in the D2 group, and the crude fat content was significantly different in the order: D3 > D1 > D2 (P < 0.05). The levels of serum triglycerides (TG) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in the D2 group were significantly lower than those in the D1 group (P < 0.05), but there was no significant difference compared to the D3 group (P > 0.05). The microbial community structure changed significantly. Mycoplasma showed the highest abundance in the D1 and D2 groups (P < 0.05), and Cetobacterium peaked in D2 group, and significantly higher than that in D1 group (P < 0.05). Network analysis and cohesion index calculation showed that both network complexity and cohesion peaked in D2 group, and Cetobacterium was highly correlated with the cohesion index (P < 0.05). Further, muscle transcriptome analysis results showed that compared with the control group, differentially expressed genes were clustered (Q < 0.05) in the arginine and proline metabolism pathways in D2 group. Fish in D3 group significantly (Q < 0.05) affected genes involved in KEGG pathways of ribosome, circadian rhythm, thermogenesis, insulin signaling pathway, fatty acid degradation, oxidative phosphorylation, and apoptosis. In conclusion, under the experimental conditions, the replacement of 27.27% of fish meal by the compound protein did not have a negative impact on the growth performance of Chinese perch and could improve muscle quality, lipid metabolism, and the interaction of intestinal microbiota.

Abstract
Fate of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during composting of antibiotic fermentation waste (AFW) is a major concern. This review article focuses on recent literature published on this subject. The key findings are that antibiotics can be removed effectively during AFW composting, with higher temperatures, appropriate bulking agents, and suitable pretreatments improving their degradation. ARGs dynamics during composting are related to bacteria and mobile genetic elements (MGEs). Higher temperatures, suitable bulking agents and an appropriate C/N ratio (30:1) lead to more efficient removal of ARGs/MGEs by shaping the bacterial composition. Keeping materials dry (moisture less than 30%) and maintaining pH stable around 7.5 after composting could inhibit the rebound of ARGs. Overall, safer utilization of AFW can be realized by optimizing composting conditions. However, further removal of antibiotics and ARGs at low levels, degradation mechanism of antibiotics, and spread mechanism of ARGs during AFW composting require further investigation.

Abstract
Microbial communities play an important role in water quality regulation and biogeochemical cycling in freshwater ecosystems. However, there has been a lack of research on the seasonal variation of sediment microorganisms in the sediments of small river basins in typical semi-arid region. In this study, high-throughput DNA sequencing was used to investigate the fungal community and its influencing factors in the sediment of the Dali River in the dry and wet seasons. The results showed that there were obvious seasonal differences in fungal alpha diversity. The diversity and richness of fungi in the dry season were greater than that in the wet season, but the evenness of fungi in the dry season was lower than that in the wet season. In addition, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the most important phyla in the Dali River fungal community, but their distributions showed clear seasonal differences. In the dry season, the relative abundance of Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were 12.34-46.42% and 17.59-27.20%, respectively. In the wet season, the relative abundances of these two phyla were 24.33-36.56% and 5.75-12.26%, respectively. PICRUSt2 was used to predict the metabolic function of fungal community in the sediment, and it was found that at the first level, the proportion of biosynthesis in the dry season was higher than that in the wet season. The ecological network structure showed that the fungal community in the wet season was more complex and stable than that in the dry season. The characteristic fungi in the dry season sediment were chytrid fungi in the family Rhizophydiaceae and the order Rhizophydiales, whereas those in the wet season sediment were in the orders Eurotiales and Saccharomycetales. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that the physicochemical properties of water and sediment together explained a greater proportion of the dry-season fungal community changes than of the wet-season changes. In the dry season, temperature and ammonia nitrogen in the water were the main factors affecting the change of fungal community, whereas in the wet season, total nitrogen concentration of the water, electrical conductivity, total organic carbon and available phosphorus of the sediment, pH, and temperature were the main factors affecting the changes in fungal community composition. The results of this study enhanced our understanding of microbial communities in semi-arid river ecosystems, and highlight the importance of the management and protection in river ecosystems.

Abstract
Anammox community is the core of anammox process. The constancy of the anammox community determines the stability of the anammox process and the ability of withstand environmental impact. Community stability is influenced by the assembly and interaction mode of the community. This study aimed to explore the assembly, interaction mode, and stability of anammox community influenced by two siderophores (enterobactin and putrebactin) specific for Ca. Brocadia and Ca. Kuenenia as produced in our previous research. Siderophores improved the stability of the anammox community, among which vulnerability dropped by 30.02 % and 72.53 % respectively. Enterobactin and putrebactin altered the succession speed and assembly pattern of communities, with a respective increase of 9.77 % and 80.87 % in the deterministic process of anammox community assembly, respectively. Enterobactin and putrebactin reduced the dependence of Ca. Brocadia and Ca. Kuenenia on companion bacteria by 60 items and 27 items respectively. The affinity of different siderophore-Fe with bacterial membrane receptors caused variations in community reconstruction, with Ca. Brocadia and Ca. Kuenenia exhibiting the highest affinity with enterobactin-Fe (-11.4 kcal/mol) and putrebactin-Fe (-9.0 kcal/mol), respectively. This study demonstrated how siderophores can enhance the stability of anammox process by regulating assembly and interaction mode of anammox community, while also revealing the underlying molecular mechanisms.

Abstract
Hyperthermophilic composting (HC) has been widely recognized for the advantage of high treatment efficiency for organic wastes. However, the humification process is still unclear. In this study, the humification process of HC was investigated, compared to conventional composting (CK). The results showed that the highest composting temperature, organic matter degradation rate, and humification index in HC were 92.62 °C, 23.98%, and 1.59, while those in CK were 70.23 °C, 14.49 %, and 1.04, indicating HC accelerated humification process. Moreover, the results of metagenomic and untargeted metabolomic showed that the genes and metabolisms related to carbohydrate, lipid, amino acid, fatty acid, and nucleotide were more abundant in HC. Consequently, the metabolic pathways regarding organic matter degradation and microbial reproduction were enhanced in the high temperature stage of HC, further accelerating the humification reaction in the low temperature stage. This work contributes to the comprehension of the humification mechanism in HC.

Abstract
Composting, reliant on microorganisms, effectively treats kitchen waste. However, it is difficult to precisely understand the specific role of key microorganisms in the composting process by relying solely on experimental research. This study aims to employ machine learning models to explore key microbial genera and to optimize composting systems. After introducing a novel microbiome preprocessing approach, Stacking models were constructed (R2 is about 0.8). The SHAP method (SHapley Additive exPlanations) identified Bacillus, Acinetobacter, Thermobacillus, Pseudomonas, Psychrobacter, and Thermobifida as prominent microbial genera (Shapley values ranging from 3.84 to 1.24). Additionally, microbial agents were prepared to target the identified key genera, and experiments demonstrated that the composting quality score was 76.06 for the treatment and 70.96 for the control. The exogenous agents enhanced decomposition and improved compost quality in later stages. In summary, this study opens up a new avenue to identifying key microorganisms and optimizing the biological treatment process.

Abstract
Aerobic composting is an effective and harmless method to treat Sauerkraut fermentation wastewater (SFW). Given the limited understanding of the effect of quorum sensing (QS) on humification in subcommunities under acidic environments, a large-scale analysis was conducted to identify features that impact the response of QS to humification in different subcommunities. The results showed that the addition of SFW directly affected humification in subcommunities A and C, and the abundances of functional genes related to carbon fixation and carbon degradation were significantly increased at 7 and 15 d, respectively. In addition, subcommunity B indirectly affected humus production but regulated carbon metabolic pathways such as glycolysis/gluconeogenesis and pentose phosphate by QS with subcommunities B. These findings provide a novel perspective for analysing the regulation of humification in aerobic composting and suggest that composting has potential applications in organic wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Co-composting is an excellent and effective technology for treating livestock manure in which microorganisms play a crucial function. Therefore, this study aimed at investigating the changes of microbial interactions during co-composting. Six different addition ratios of chicken and pig manure were used in composting experiment. The results showed that the co-composting system using 60% chicken manure and 40% pig manure significantly altered the microbial diversity and community structure. In addition, the complexity and tightness of its microbial community network structure reached the maximum, as did the strength of its cooperative and competitive microbial interactions. The higher microbial abundance and microbial interaction have the potential to promote the decomposition and transformation of compost components. Therefore, this study preliminarily revealed the changes of microbial community in co-composting, which provided a theoretical basis for optimizing microbial community interaction in composting systems by mixing different ratios of materials in practice.

BACKGROUND Carbon and nitrogen are essential energy and nutrient substances in the composting process. Corn steep liquor (CSL) is rich in soluble carbon and nitrogen nutrients and active substances and is widely used in the biological industry. Nonetheless, limited research has been done on the effect of CSL on composting. This work firstly reveals the effect of adding CSL to bacterial community composition and carbon and nitrogen conversion during composting. Two treatments were set up in the experiment: 100% spent mushroom substrate (SMS) as CK and SMS + 0.5% CSL (v/v) as CP. RESULTS The results showed that the addition of CSL enhanced the initial carbon and nitrogen content of the compost, altered the bacterial community structure, and increased the bacterial diversity and relative abundance, which might be beneficial to the conversion and retention of carbon and nitrogen in the composting process. In this paper, network analysis was used to screen the core bacteria involved in carbon and nitrogen conversion. In the CP network, the core bacteria were divided into two categories, synthesizing and degrading bacteria, and there were more synthesizing bacteria than degrading bacteria, so the degradation and synthesis of organic matter were carried out simultaneously, while only degrading bacteria were found in the CK network. Functional prediction by Faprotax identified 53 groups of functional bacteria, among which 20 (76.68% abundance) and 14 (13.15% abundance) groups of functional bacteria were related to carbon and nitrogen conversion, respectively. Adding CSL stimulated the compensatory effect of core and functional bacteria, enhanced the carbon and nitrogen transformation ability, stimulated the activity of low-abundance bacteria, and reduced the competitive relationship between the bacterial groups. This may be why the addition of CSL accelerated the organic matter degradation and increased carbon and nitrogen preservation. CONCLUSIONS These findings indicate that the addition of CSL promoted the cycling and preservation of carbon and nitrogen in the SMS composts, and the addition of CSL to the compost may be an effective way to dispose of agricultural waste.

Abstract
Inoculation can effectively improve the recycling level of organic waste in composting process. However, the role of inocula in the humification process has been rarely studied. Therefore, we constructed a simulated food waste composting system by adding commercial microbial agents to explore the function of inocula. The results showed that adding microbial agents extended the high temperature maintenance time by 33% and increased the humic acid content by 42%. Inoculation significantly improved the degree of directional humification (HA/TOC = 0.46, p < 0.001). The proportion of positive cohesion in the microbial community underwent an overall increase. The strength of bacterial/fungal community interaction increased by 1.27-fold after inoculation. Furthermore, the inoculum stimulated the potential functional microbes (Thermobifida and Acremonium) which were highly related to the formation of humic acid and the degradation of organic matter. This study showed that additional microbial agents could strengthen microbial interaction to raise the humic acid content, thus opening the door for the development of targeted biotransformation inocula in the future.

Abstract
Straw incorporation is typically employed to enhance the nutrient content of soil and promote crop growth in intensive agricultural systems. Despite studies regarding the effects of straw incorporation on soil microbial communities, the underlying mechanisms of its effect on community co-occurrence interactions and assembly processes remain poorly understood. Herein, soil samples with or without straw incorporation were collected across a latitudinal gradient from north to central China. We found that straw incorporation considerably altered the structure of soil microbial community. The relative abundance of bacterial Latescibacterota and fungal Mortierellomycota were higher in straw-amended soils owing to their ability to decompose straw residues. The co-occurrence network in straw-amended soil exhibited greater complexity, including more network connectivity and keystone species, and higher average degrees and clustering coefficients compared with the control sample network. The network robustness and vulnerability indices suggested that straw incorporation increased the microbial network stability. Normalized stochastic ratios demonstrated that the stochastic process was the dominant mechanisms shaping the assembly of microbial communities in straw-amended soils. Concurrently, null model analysis revealed that straw increased the contribution of dispersal limitation to the assembly of bacterial and fungal communities. The migration rate of the microbial community, obtained from Sloan neutral community model, was relatively low in straw-amended soil at all the sample sites, potentially indicating the great importance of dispersal limitation. These findings would enhance our understanding of the ecological patterns and interactions of soil microbial communities in response to straw incorporation.

Abstract
Karst ecosystems are widely distributed around the world, accounting for 15-20% of the global land area. However, knowledge on microbial ecology of these systems does not match with their global importance. To close this knowledge gap, we sampled three niches including weathered rock, sediment, and drip water inside the Heshang Cave and three types of soils overlying the cave (forest soil, farmland soil, and pristine karst soil). All these samples were subjected to high-throughput sequencing of V4-V5 region of 16S rRNA gene and analyzed with multivariate statistical analysis. Overall, archaeal communities were dominated by Thaumarchaeota, whereas Actinobacteria dominated bacterial communities. Thermoplasmata, Nitrosopumilaceae, Aenigmarchaeales, Crossiella, Acidothermus, and Solirubrobacter were the important predictor groups inside the Heshang Cave, which were correlated to NH4 + availability. In contrast, Candidatus Nitrososphaera, Candidatus Nitrocosmicus, Thaumarchaeota Group 1.1c, and Pseudonocardiaceae were the predictors outside the cave, whose distribution was correlated with pH, Ca2+, and NO2 -. Tighter network structures were found in archaeal communities than those of bacteria, whereas the topological properties of bacterial networks were more similar to those of total prokaryotic networks. Both chemolithoautotrophic archaea (Candidatus Methanoperedens and Nitrosopumilaceae) and bacteria (subgroup 7 of Acidobacteria and Rokubacteriales) were the dominant keystone taxa within the co-occurrence networks, potentially playing fundamental roles in obtaining energy under oligotrophic conditions and thus maintaining the stability of the cave ecosystem. To be noted, all the keystone taxa of karst ecosystems were related to nitrogen cycling, which needs further investigation, particularly the role of archaea. The predicted ecological functions in karst soils mainly related to carbohydrate metabolism, biotin metabolism, and synthesis of fatty acid. Our results offer new insights into archaeal ecology, their potential functions, and archaeal interactions with bacteria, which enhance our understanding about the microbial dark matter in the subsurface karst ecosystems.

Abstract
Soil is recognized as the major reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), harboring the most diverse naturally evolved ARGs on the planet. Multidrug resistance genes are a class of ARGs, and their high prevalence in natural soil ecosystems has recently raised concerns. Since most of these genes express proton motive force (PMF) driven efflux pumps, studying whether soil pH is a determinant for the selection of multidrug efflux pump genes and thus shaping the soil resistome are of great interest. In this study, we collected 108 soils with pH values ranging from 4.37 to 9.69 from multiple ecosystems and profiled the composition of ARGs for metagenomes and metagenome-assembled genomes. We observed the multidrug efflux pump genes enriched in the acidic soil resistome, and their abundances have significant soil pH dependence. This reflects the benefits of high soil proton activity on the multidrug efflux pump genes, especially for the PMF-driven inner membrane transferase. In addition, we preliminary indicate the putative microbial participants in pH shaping the soil resistome by applying ecological analyzing tools such as stepwise regression and random forest model fitting. The decisive influence of proton activity on shaping the resistome is more impactful than any other examined factors, and as the consequence, we revisited the influence of edaphic factors on the soil resistome; i.e., the deterministic selection of resistance mechanisms by edaphic factors could lead to the bottom-up shaping of the ARG composition. Such natural developing mechanisms of the resistome are herein suggested to be considered in assessing human-driven ARG transmissions.

Abstract
In recent years, Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) films were wildly used due to its biodegradable properties. However, there are few reports of strains that can high efficiently degrade PBAT. Thermobifida fusca FXJ-1, a thermophilic actinomycete, was screened and identified from compost. FXJ-1 can efficiently degrade PBAT at 55 °C in MSM medium. The degradation rates of the pure PBAT film (PF), PBAT film used for mulching on agricultural fields (PAF), and PBAT-PLA-ST film (PPSF) were 82.87 ± 1.01%, 87.83 ± 2.00% and 52.53 ± 0.54%, respectively, after nine days of incubation in MSM medium. Cracking areas were monitored uniformly distributed on the surfaces of three kinds of PBAT-based films after treatment with FXJ-1 using scanning electron microscopy. The LC-MS results showed that PBAT might be degraded into adipic acid, terephthalic acid, butylene adipate, butylene terephthalate and butylene adipate-co-terephthalate, and these products are involved in the cleavage of ester bonds. We also found that amylase produced by FXJ-1 played an important role in the degradation of PPSF. FXJ-1 also showed an efficient PBAT-based films degradation ability in simulating compost environment, which implied its potential application in PBAT and starch-based film degradation by industrial composting.

Abstract
Strong oxidants can reduce the emission of NH3 during composting. But as a commonly used oxidant, the influence of persulfate on nitrogen transformation during composting is unclear. In this study, the effects of 0.3 %-1.2 % potassium persulfate (PS) on nitrogen losses and microbial community during air-dried cow manure composting were investigated. The results showed that PS could reduce nitrogen losses compared to the control. This was because it decreased pH and the maximum NH4+-N content of treatments, which was beneficial to nitrogen retention. In addition, Pseudoxanthomonas and Chelativorans were enriched compared to the control, which might be associated with NH4+-N transformation and nitrogen fixation. Meanwhile, PS increased the abundance of thermophilic lignocellulose degrading bacteria, and 0.3 % and 0.6 % PS increased the maximum temperature and the duration of the thermophilic period. This study indicated that PS could reduce nitrogen losses in composting and greatly influence nitrogen transforming and lignocellulose degrading bacteria.

Abstract
Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) fate in a full-scale Food waste (FW) facility was investigated. Results showed that with the changes in ARGs, microbial networks could be naturally divided into two clusters, named as the ARGs increasing group (AI group) and the ARGs decreasing group (AD group). The significant difference between two groups (i.e. stronger microbial competition in the AI group and stronger microbial cooperation in the AD group) implied that the variation in ARGs over time were caused by a switch between competition and cooperation. These results indicated that microbial competition might increase ARGs abundance, while cooperation might reduce it. Meanwhile, structural-equation-model (SEM model) showed that humification indexes (e.g. GI value) was an indicator for characterizing microbial interactions and ARGs. The results of the linear model further confirmed that mature compost (GI values > 92.6 %) could reduce the risk of ARGs.

Abstract
In ecosystem engineering research, the contribution of microbial cooperation to ecosystem function has been emphasized. Fungi are one of the predominant decomposers in composting, but thus far, less attention has been given to fungal than to bacterial cooperation. Therefore, network and cohesion analyses were combined to reveal the correlation between fungal cooperation and organic matter (OM) degradation in ten composting piles. Positive cohesion, reflecting the cooperation degree, was positively linked to the degradation rate of OM. From the community perspective, core species (i.e., Candida tropicalis, Issatchenkia orientails, Kazachstania exigua, and Dipodascus australiensis) with high occurrence frequency and abundance were the key in regulating positive cohesion. These species were highly relevant to functional genera associated with OM degradation in both fungal and bacterial domains. Therefore, focusing on these core fungal species might be an appropriate strategy for targeted regulation of functional microbes and promotion of degradation rates.

Abstract
Five full-scale food waste composts were conducted under different aeration frequencies (no aeration, aeration at different intervals, and continuous aeration) to reveal the optimal strategy and its microbial mechanisms. The highest degradation rate (77.2%) and humus content (29.3%) were observed in Treatment D with interval aeration (aeration 20 min, pause 10 min). Aeration influenced the degradation and humification rate by regulating microbial interactions. The microbial interactions peaked in Treatment D, with a 1.30-fold increase. In terms of the microbial community, Thermobifida was a key genus for improving positive cohesion, fulfilling three criteria (high abundance, high occurrence frequency, and significant differences between treatments). The aeration strategy employed in Treatment D not only increased relative abundance of Thermobifida (1.2 times higher) but also strengthened interaction between it and functional genera (34 nodes). Overall, interval aeration, featured by 20 min aeration and 10 min pause, could increase microbial interactions and improve composting efficiency.
