A novel tracer technique for the assessment of fine sediment dynamics in urban water management systems

Effects of dissolved organic carbon on potentially toxic element desorption in stormwater bioretention systems

Stormwater runoff contains dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and potentially toxic elements (PTEs). Interactions between DOC and PTEs can impact PTE speciation and mobility, but are not fully understood. Soil samples were collected from a vegetated bioretention bed to investigate the effects of DOC (0, 15, and 50 mg-C/L) on the desorption of 10 PTEs captured by the soil media: Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sn, Sb, and Pb. In the absence of DOC, the desorbed PTE concentration from bioretention media into the aqueous phase ranking was as follows: Fe > Mn ∼ Zn > Cu > Pb > Sb > As > Co > Sn ∼ Cd. Increased DOC concentrations resulted in a reduction of the soil-water distribution coefficient (Kd) values. The greatest shift in Kd was observed for Cu and lowest for Sb. The PTE sorption capacities were lower for surficial soil samples (lower Kd) compared to the deep soil samples. Overall, the desorbed PTE (average midchannel 55.7 μg/g) fraction accounted for <1.1 % of the total extracted PTEs (5364 μg/g), and while this is a small percentage of the total, this is the fraction that is mobile. The extracted PTE fractions revealed that DOC reduced the organic matter-bound and carbonate-bound fractions. The PTE desorption trends suggest that reducing DOC in stormwater runoff could be an effective measure to mitigate the release of PTEs into the environment.

Transport of silica encapsulated DNA microparticles in controlled instantaneous injection open channel experiments

Surface water tracing is a widely used technique to investigate in-stream mass transport including contaminant migration. Recently, a microparticle tracer was developed with unique synthetic DNA encapsulated in an environmentally-friendly silica coating (Si-DNA microparticle). Previous tracing applications of such tracers reported detection and quantification, but a massive loss of tracer mass. However, the transport behavior of these DNA-tagged microparticle tracers has not been rigorously quantified and compared with that of solute tracers. Therefore, we compared the transport behavior of Si-DNA microparticles to the behavior of solute NaCl in 6 different, environmentally representative water types using breakthrough curves (BTCs), obtained from laboratory open channel injection experiments, whereby no Si-DNA microparticle tracer mass was lost. Hereafter, we modelled the BTCs using a 1-D advection-dispersion model with one transient storage zone (OTIS) by calibrating the hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient D and a storage zone exchange rate coefficient. We concluded that the transport behavior of Si-DNA microparticles resembled that of NaCl in surface-water relevant conditions, evidenced by BTCs with a similar range of D; however, the Si-DNA microparticle had a more erratic BTC than its solute counterpart, whereby the scatter increased as a function of water quality complexity. The overall larger confidence interval of D_Si-DNA was attributed to the discrete nature of colloidal particles with a certain particle size distribution and possibly minor shear-induced aggregations. This research established a solid methodological foundation for field application of Si-DNA microparticles in surface water tracing, providing insight in transport behavior of equivalent sized and mass particles in rivers.

Computational fluid dynamics modelling of flow and particulate contaminants sedimentation in an urban stormwater detention and settling basin

Sedimentation is a common but complex phenomenon in the urban drainage system. The settling mechanisms involved in detention basins are still not well understood. The lack of knowledge on sediment transport and settling processes in actual detention basins is still an obstacle to the optimization of the design and the management of the stormwater detention basins. In order to well understand the sedimentation processes, in this paper, a new boundary condition as an attempt to represent the sedimentation processes based on particle tracking approach is presented. The proposed boundary condition is based on the assumption that the flow turbulent kinetic energy near the bottom plays an important role on the sedimentation processes. The simulated results show that the proposed boundary condition appears as a potential capability to identify the preferential sediment zones and to predict the trapping efficiency of the basin during storm events.
