Reviewing the role of biochar in paddy soils: An agricultural and environmental perspective

The main challenge of the twenty-first century is to find a balance between environmental sustainability and crop productivity in a world with a rapidly growing population. Soil health is the backbone of a resilient environment and stable food production systems. In recent years, the use of biochar to bind nutrients, sorption of pollutants, and increase crop productivity has gained popularity. This article reviews key recent studies on the environmental impacts of biochar and the benefits of its unique physicochemical features in paddy soils. This review provides critical information on the role of biochar properties on environmental pollutants, carbon and nitrogen cycling, plant growth regulation, and microbial activities. Biochar improves the soil properties of paddy soils through increasing microbial activities and nutrient availability, accelerating carbon and nitrogen cycle, and reducing the availability of heavy metals and micropollutants. For example, a study showed that the application of a maximum of 40 t ha-1 of biochar from rice husks prior to cultivation (at high temperature and slow pyrolysis) increases nutrient utilization and rice grain yield by 40%. Biochar can be used to minimize the use of chemical fertilizers to ensure sustainable food production.

Heavy metals accumulation in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) roots and shoots grown in calcareous soils treated with non-spiked and spiked sewage sludge

With growing urbanization and agriculture, the quantity of sewage sludge production increases every year. For the purpose of risk management, it is crucial to figure out how much heavy metals are transported to different parts of plants when sewage sludge is used. A greenhouse experiment was carried out to investigate the accumulation of heavy metals in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown in 30 calcareous soils. The soils in this study were subjected to three different treatments: soils treated with sewage sludge at a rate of 2.5%, soils treated with sewage sludge at a rate of 2.5% and enriched with heavy metals, and control soils that received neither sewage sludge nor heavy metals. Wheat grown in sewage sludge-treated soils had the highest mean dry matter, and was 2.11 and 1.25 times greater than wheat grown in control and spiked-sewage sludge-treated soils, respectively. In all treatments, wheat roots had greater heavy metal levels than wheat shoots. Among all the heavy metals examined, Pb and Cu had the highest bioconcentration factors for roots and shoots (BCF_Roots and BCF_Shoots) in control and sewage sludge-treated soils, followed by Cd in spiked-sewage sludge-treated soils, and Co and Ni had the lowest BCF_Roots and BCF_Shoots across all treatments. In spiked-sewage sludge-treated soils, the root restriction for heavy metals translocation was more important for Co, Cu, and Ni than for Pb and Zn, indicating that wheat can be grown safely in a variety of calcareous soils amended with sewage sludge with high content of Cd, Co, Cu, and Ni. Reducing the transfer of Pb and Zn from soils to wheat in soils treated with sewage sludge yet having high concentrations of these heavy metals should be considered as a top priority strategy for preserving wheat products. Since a wide range of calcareous soils was used in this study and because calcareous soils make up the majority of soils in the Middle East, the findings are relevant for all of the countries in this region.

Occurrence and Distribution of Heavy Metals in Mining Degraded Soil and Medicinal Plants: A Case Study of Pb/Zn Sulfide Terrain Northern Areas, Pakistan

Mining activities have serious environmental impacts, thus releasing heavy metals (HMs) such as cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), zinc (Zn) and nickel (Ni) into the surrounding environment. The current paper investigated the impacts of mining activities of Pb-Zn sulfide on soil and medicinal plants. Hence, soil samples (n = 36) and medicinal plants (n = 36) samples were collected, acid extracted and were analyzed through Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) for HMs quantification. Our results showed that mineralized zones showed high HMs enrichment levels as compared to non-mineralized zones. Various Indices for HMs assessment revealed that the contaminated soil of the study area had low to extreme level. The mean concentrations of HMs in mining degraded soil and medicinal plants were significantly higher (p ≤ 0.01) and were found in order of Zn > Pb > Cr > Ni > Cd and Cr > Zn > Pb > Ni > Cd respectively. Similarly, some widely consumable medicinal plants showed good metal accumulation for Cd, Cr and Pb i.e., 3.57 mg kg¹, 350 mg kg^-1 and 335 mg kg^-1 in C. sativa, while 5.9 mg kg-1, 276.9 mg kg-1 and 188.7 mg kg-1 in R. hestatus respectively. Hence, the present study recommended that medicinal plants grown in mining areas should be analyzed for HMs concentration before consumption.

Medicinal Plant Growth in Heavy Metals Contaminated Soils: Responses to Metal Stress and Induced Risks to Human Health

Accelerating heavy metal pollution is a hot issue due to a continuous growth in consumerism and increased activities in various global industries. Soil contamination with heavy metals has resulted in their incorporation into the human food web via plant components. Accumulation and amplification of heavy metals in human tissues through the consumption of medicinal plants can have hazardous health outcomes. Therefore, in this critical review we aim to bring together published information on this subject, with a special highlight on the knowledge gaps related to heavy metal stress in medicinal plants, their responses, and human health related risks. In this respect, this review outlines the key contamination sources of heavy metals in plants, as well as the absorption, mobilization and translocation of metal ions in plant compartments, while considering their respective mechanisms of detoxification. In addition, this literature review attempts to highlight how stress and defensive strategies operate in plants, pointing out the main stressors, either biotic or abiotic (e.g., heavy metals), and the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in stress answers. Finally, in our research, we further aim to capture the risks caused by heavy metals in medicinal plants to human health through the assessment of both a hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI).

Restriction of biosolids returning to land: Fate of antibiotic resistance genes in soils after long-term biosolids application

Although the utilization of biosolids in agricultural lands is widely considered as an effective way to improve resource reuse, the presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) severely restricts biosolids returning to fields. A 12-year long-term experiment with different biosolids application rates (from 0 to 36 t ha^-1 yr^-1) was conducted to study the effect of biosolids application on shaping ARGs in soil. Biosolids application significantly increased ARGs abundance in the soil, except for MBS treatment (9 t ha^-1 yr^-1 biosolids application). The abundance of ARGs in soil did not increase linearly with the dose of biosolids applied, but they were significantly (P < 0.05) positively correlated. A total of 173 subtypes were detected, among them mobile genetic elements (MGEs), aminoglycoside, and multidrug resistance genes were the most dominant types. Except for MBS treatment, most of the ARGs detected were enriched in amended soils after long-term continuous biosolids application. Specifically, tetPA, sul1, mefA, and IS6100 were highly enriched in all amended soils. In addition, biosolids application increased soil nutrients and heavy metals, and changed the soil microbial community, all of which affected ARGs formation. But MGEs may be a greater factor for shaping ARGs profiles than soil properties. Overall, controlling the rate of biosolid application is the key to reducing the accumulation and horizontal transfer of ARGs in soils.

Metal-Organic Frameworks-Based Sensors for Food Safety

Food contains a variety of poisonous and harmful substances that have an impact on human health. Therefore, food safety is a worldwide public concern. Food detection approaches must ensure the safety of food at every step of the food supply chain by monitoring and evaluating all hazards from every single step of food production. Therefore, early detection and determination of trace-level contaminants in food are one of the most crucial measures for ensuring food safety and safeguarding consumers' health. In recent years, various methods have been introduced for food safety analysis, including classical methods and biomolecules-based sensing methods. However, most of these methods are laboratory-dependent, time-consuming, costly, and require well-trained technicians. To overcome such problems, developing rapid, simple, accurate, low-cost, and portable food sensing techniques is essential. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a type of porous materials that present high porosity, abundant functional groups, and tunable physical and chemical properties, demonstrates promise in large-number applications. In this regard, MOF-based sensing techniques provide a novel approach in rapid and efficient sensing of pathogenic bacteria, heavy metals, food illegal additives, toxins, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), veterinary drugs, and pesticide residues. This review focused on the rapid screening of MOF-based sensors for food safety analysis. Challenges and future perspectives of MOF-based sensors were discussed. MOF-based sensing techniques would be useful tools for food safety evaluation owing to their portability, affordability, reliability, sensibility, and stability. The present review focused on research published up to 7 years ago. We believe that this work will help readers understand the effects of food hazard exposure, the effects on humans, and the use of MOFs in the detection and sensing of food hazards.

Variation of soil properties with sampling depth in two different light-textured soils after repeated applications of urban sewage sludge

Semi-arid agricultural soils have increasingly been subjected to urban sewage sludge (USS) applications due to accelerated soil depletion and shortages in manure supply. Research studies addressing USS reuse have mostly been conducted in cropping systems and focused on changes in topsoil properties of a given texture. Therefore, sludge-soil interactions could be largely influenced by the presence of plants, soil particle composition and depth. In this field study, two agricultural soils (sandy, S and sandy loam, SL) received simultaneously four annual USS applications of 40, 80, and 120 t ha^-1 year^-1 in absence of vegetation. Outcomes showed the increase of carbon and macronutrients in both soils proportionally to USS dose especially in the topsoil profile (0-20 cm). Subsoil (20-40 cm) was similarly influenced by sludge rates, showing comparable variations of fertility parameters though at significant lower levels. The depth-dependent improvement of soil fertility in both layers enhanced the microbiological properties accordingly, with significant variations in soil SL characterized by a higher clay content than soil S. Besides, positive correlations between increases in sludge dose, salinity, trace metals, and enzyme activities in both soils indicate that excessive sludge doses did not cause soil degradation or biotoxic effects under the described experimental conditions. In particular and despite high geoaccumulation indices of Ni in both soils and profiles, the global concentrations of Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn were still below threshold levels for contaminated soils. In addition, the maintenance of pH values within neutral range and the increase of organic matter content with respect to control would have further reduced metal availability in amended soils. Therefore, we could closely investigate the effects of texture and depth on the intrinsic resilience of each soil to cope with repetitive USS applications.

Bottom Ash Modification via Sintering Process for Its Use as a Potential Heavy Metal Adsorbent: Sorption Kinetics and Mechanism

Heavy metal pollution in the environment is a critical issue, engendering ecosystem deterioration and adverse effects on human health. The main objective of this study was to evaluate heavy metal adsorbents by modifying industrial byproducts. The bottom ash was sintered and evaluated for Cd and Pb sorption. Three adsorbents (bottom ash, sintered bottom ash (SBA), and SBA mixed with microorganisms (SBMA)) were tested to evaluate the sorption kinetics and mechanism using a lab-scale batch experiment. The results showed that the highest sorption efficiency was observed for Cd (98.16%) and Pb (98.41%) with 10% SBA. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R² > 0.99) represented the sorption kinetics better than the pseudo-first-order kinetic model for the SBA and SBMA, indicating that chemical precipitation could be the dominant sorption mechanism. This result is supported by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, demonstrating that -OH, -CO₃, -O, and -S complexation was formed at the surface of the sintered materials as Cd(OH)₂ and CdCO₃ for Cd and PbO, and PbS for Pb. Overall, SBA could be utilized for heavy metal sorption. Further research is necessary to enhance the sorption capacity and longevity of modified industrial byproducts.

Wastewater treatment, reuse, and disposal-associated effects on environment and health

This paper presents the review of the literature published in the year 2019 related to treatment and reuse of wastewater and effects on the environment and human health. The scientific review on the treatment and reuse of wastewaters is divided into various sections in the paper. The review sections cover wastewater management, reuse, removal of microorganisms, and chemical constituents. Besides, the review also covers research focused on wastewater treatment plants, disposal, and the management of wastewater sludge as well as biosolids in the environment. PRACTITIONER POINTS: This paper highlights the review of scientific literature published in the year 2019.Review provide issues related to health risks associated with human and the general environment on the reuse of wastewater, treatment as well as disposal.The literature review covers selected papers relevant to the topic.

Removal of heavy metals from industrial sludge with new plant-based washing agents

Washing is one of the techniques for permanent removal of heavy metals from industrial sludge, for which washing agents are a key influence factor. However, high-efficiency, eco-friendly, and inexpensive agents are still lacking. In this study, the solutions derived from the three plant materials including Fatsia japonica, Hovenia acerba and Pterocarya stenoptera were employed to remove Cd, Cu, Pb, and Ni from industrial sludge. The effects of washing solution concentration, pH, washing time and temperature on metal removal were investigated. The metal removal efficiencies were found to increase with increasing solution concentrations or washing temperatures, decline with increasing pH, and presented various trends with increasing washing time. Among the three agents that derived from H. acerba showed relatively high removal for Cu (75.81%), Pb (63.42%), Ni (27.52%), and Cd (56.99%). After washing, environmental risks of residual metals were markedly diminished in sludge, attributable to decrease in their exchangeable forms. Furthermore, the applications of the plant washing agents increased sludge organic carbon, alkali-hydrolysable nitrogen, available phosphorus, and available potassium. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis suggested that the hydroxyl, carboxyl, ether, and amide may be the main functional groups in the three plant materials binding the heavy metals. Overall, the agent derived from H. acerba appears to be a feasible washing material for heavy metals removal from sludge.
