Molybdenum doped bismuth oxide clusters and their reactivity towards ethene: comparison with pure bismuth oxide clusters

Structural Properties of Gas Phase Molybdenum Sulfide Clusters [Mo3S13]2-, [HMo3S13]-, and [H3Mo3S13]+ as Model Systems of a Promising Hydrogen Evolution Catalyst

Amorphous molybdenum sulfide (MoS _x ) is a potent catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Since mechanistic investigations on amorphous solids are particularly difficult, we use a bottom-up approach and study the [Mo₃S₁₃]^2- nanocluster and its protonated forms. The mass selected pure [Mo₃S₁₃]^2- as well as singly and triply protonated [HMo₃S₁₃]^- and [H₃Mo₃S₁₃]⁺ ions, respectively, were investigated by a combination of collision induced dissociation (CID) experiments and quantum chemical calculations. A rich variety of H _x S _y elimination channels was observed, giving insight into the structural flexibility of the clusters. In particular, it was calculated that the observed clusters tend to keep the Mo₃ ring structure found in the bulk and that protons adsorb primarily on terminal disulfide units of the cluster. Mo-H bonds are formed only for quasi-linear species with Mo centers featuring empty coordination sites. Protonation leads to increased cluster stability against CID. The rich variety of CID dissociation products for the triply protonated [H₃Mo₃S₁₃]⁺ ion, however, suggests that it has a large degree of structural flexibility, with roaming H/SH moieties, which could be a key feature of MoS _x to facilitate HER catalysis via a Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism.

Gas-Phase Reactivity Studies of Small Molybdenum Cluster Ions with Dimethyl Disulfide

Molybdenum sulfide is a potent hydrogen evolution catalyst, and is discussed as a replacement of platinum in large-scale electrochemical hydrogen production. To learn more about the elementary steps of MoS₂ production by sputtering in the presence of dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), the reactions of Mo_x⁺, x = 1–3, with DMDS are studied by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry and density functional theory calculations. A rich variety of products composed of molybdenum, sulfur, carbon and hydrogen was observed. Mo_xS_y⁺ species are formed in the first reaction step, together with products containing carbon and hydrogen. The calculations indicate that the strong Mo-S bonds are formed preferentially, followed by Mo–C bonds. Hydrogen is exclusively bound to carbon atoms, i.e. no insertion of a molybdenum atom into a C–H bond is observed. The reactions are efficient and highly exothermic, explaining the rich chemistry observed in the experiment.

Structures of [CoO(CO2)n]- and [NiO(CO2)n]- clusters studied by infrared spectroscopy

We present infrared spectra of [CoO(CO2)n](-) and [NiO(CO2)n](-) clusters and interpret them in the framework of computational results employing density functional theory. We find that both [CoO(CO2)n](-) and [NiO(CO2)n](-) clusters are generally composed of the same core isomers. The dominant isomers consist of an η(2) CO2 ligand and a CO3 moiety that can be bound to the metal atom with monodentate (η(1)) or bidentate (η(2)) connectivity. Minor structural isomers observed are composed of a C2O4 moiety with a lone oxygen atom or a CO3 unit.

Gas-Phase Reactivity of Heterobinuclear Oxometalate Anions [CrMoO6(OR)]-, [CrWO6(OR)]-, and [MoWO6(OR)]- (R = H, nBu)

Heterobinuclear oxometalate anions based upon [CrMoO7]2-, [CrWO7]2-, and [MoWO7]2- were generated and transferred to the gas phase by the electrospray process from acetonitrile solutions containing two of the salts (Bu4N)2[MO4] (M = Cr, Mo, W). Their reactivities were examined and compared with those of the related homobinuclear anions based upon [M2O7]2- (M = Cr, Mo, W). Particular emphasis was placed upon reactions relevant to gas-phase catalytic cycles described previously for oxidation of alcohols by [Mo2O6(OH)]- (Waters, T.; O'Hair, R. A. J.; Wedd, A. G. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2003, 125, 3384-3396). The protonated anions [MM'O6(OH)]- each reacted with methanol with loss of water to form [MM'O6(OCH3)]- at a rate that was intermediate between those of [M2O6(OH)]- and [M'2O6(OH)]-. The butylated anions [MM'O6(OBu)]- were generated by collisional activation of the ion-pairs {Bu4N+ [MM'O7]2-}-. Collisional activation of [MM'O6(OBu)]- resulted in either the loss of butanal (redox reaction) or the loss of butene (elimination reaction), with the detailed nature of the observations depending on the nature of both M and M'. Selective 18O labeling indicated that the butoxo ligands of [CrMoO6(OBu)]- and [CrWO6(OBu)]- were located on molybdenum and tungsten, respectively. This structural insight allowed a more detailed comparison of reactivity with the homobinuclear species, and highlighted the importance of the neighboring metal center in these reactions.
