Abstract
In this study, a complex consisting of 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (4-hydroxyphenyl) porphyrin, (named dual chiral-achiral selector complex) was used for the determination of two novel potential anticancer agents of (I) and (II) aminoalkanol derivatives. This work aimed at developing an effective method that can be utilized for the determination of I (S), I (R), and II (S) and II (R) enantiomers of (I) and (II) compounds through the use of a dual chiral-achiral selector complex consisting of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (4-hydroxyphenyl) porphyrin system by applying capillary electrophoresis. This combination proved to be beneficial in achieving high separation selectivity due to the combined effects of different modes of chiral discrimination. The enantiomers of (I) and (II) compounds were separated within a very short time of 3.6–7.2 min, in pH 2.5 phosphate buffer containing 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (4-hydroxyphenyl) porphyrin system at a concentration of 5 and 10 mM, respectively, at 25 °C and +10 kV. The detection wavelength of the detector was set at 200 nm. The LOD for I (S), I (R), II (S), and II (R) was 65.2, 65.6, 65.1, and 65.7 ng/mL, respectively. LOQ for I (S), I (R), II (S), and II (R) was 216.5, 217.8, 217.1, and 218.1 ng/mL, respectively. Recovery was 94.9–99.9%. The repeatability and reproducibility of the method based on the values of the migration time, and the area under the peak was 0.3–2.9% RSD. The stability of the method was determined at 0.1–4.9% RSD. The developed method was used in the pilot studies for determining the enantiomers I (S), I (R), II (S), and II (R) in the blood serum.

Abstract
More and more various chemical media are being applied in enantioseparation; among them, ionic liquids (ILs) have attracted the long-term attention in this decade as green designable solvents. This paper provides comprehensive overview for the applications of ILs in chiral extraction, gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis and other techniques for enantioseparation. Additionally, the important resolution mechanisms based on ILs have also been summarized and discussed. This review focuses on the latest development of enantioseparation methods by using ILs in various modes, leading to meaningful and valuable information to related fields and thus promotes further research and application of reported methods.

Periodic mesoporous organosilica materials as sorbents for solid-phase extraction of drugs prior to simultaneous enantiomeric separation by capillary electrophoresis. Abstract
Two novel periodic mesoporous organosilica materials were synthesized with a neutral phenylene-bridged ligand, 1,4-bis(trimethoxysilylethyl)benzene, one of them using tetraethyl orthosilicate as additional silica source (PMO-TMSEB-1 and PMO-TMSEB-2). A third material was also synthesized with 1,4-bis(triethoxysilyl)benzene ligand (PMO-TESB-1) which use has scarcely been reported. The three materials were evaluated as solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbents for the off-line extraction of a mixture of seven drugs of different nature (duloxetine, terbutaline, econazole, propranolol, verapamil, metoprolol, and betaxolol) from water samples. Subsequent simultaneous enantiomeric analysis by CE, using sulfated-β-cyclodextrin (2% w/v) dissolved in a 25 mM phosphate buffer (pH 3.0) and a voltage of -20 kV (negative polarity) was carried out. Enantiomeric resolutions ranging from 2.4 to 8.5 were obtained in an analysis time of 16 min. After optimization of SPE parameters, it was shown that using just 100 mg of PMO-TESB-1 as sorbent, a preconcentration factor of 400 with 200 mL solution was achieved, allowing recoveries between 80.5 and 103.1% (except for terbutaline), with good repeatability (% RSD = 2-8 %, n = 5). Analytical characteristics of the method were evaluated in terms of precision, linearity and accuracy with method quantitation limits between 5.6 and 21.9 μg/L. The developed method was applied to the analysis of spiked wastewater samples collected in different treatment plants, with recoveries between 73.9 and 102.9% except for econazole with recovery values ranging between 58.5 and 72.4%.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The tree Trichilia catigua, popularly known as "catuaba", shows several biological activities and has emerged as a potential source of new drugs. Considering that more than 10 species are known under the same popular name, regulatory agencies require more rigorous quality control of this medicinal plant. OBJECTIVE To develop and validate a methodology using capillary electrophoresis (CE) with ultraviolet (UV) detection for analysing polyphenols in the ethyl-acetate fraction (EAF) of Trichilia catigua. METHODOLOGY Different electrophoretic conditions (such as wavelength of UV detection, voltage, buffer concentration and pH, cyclodextrin type and concentration) were investigated. After optimisation, borate buffer 80 mmol/L at pH 8.80 with 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin 10 mmol/L was selected as background electrolyte. A voltage reduction was used to improve the separation of a diastereomeric pair of cinchonains. RESULTS The method proved to be simple, sensitive, accurate, linear, precise and reproducible. For the first time in natural products analysis, a voltage reduction and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin were used to improve the separation of diastereomeric pairs. Until now, this is the only described methodology able to separate catechin, epicatechin, cinchonains Ia, Ib, IIa, and IIb from Trichilia catigua samples on the same run in less than 12 min. When compared to the high performance liquid chromatography with photo-diode array detection (HPLC-PDA) method previously developed by our research group, the CE method was more efficient, faster, less expensive and less polluting. CONCLUSION Our results demonstrate that this method could be employed in a quality-control laboratory for the quantification of polyphenols in EAF of Trichilia catigua. Abstract
In this paper, the use of clarithromycin lactobionate, a kind of antibiotic chiral selector, in combination with four neutral cyclodextrin derivatives (glucose-β-cyclodextrin, hydroxyethyl-β-cyclodextrin, methyl-β-cyclodextrin and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin) was reported for the first time. As a result, these dual systems gave much better resolution of nefopam (the Rs increased to 3.58, 2.72, 1.49 and 1.42, respectively) compared to the single systems. The effects of buffer pH and selector concentration on the separation of nefopam were also investigated. Additionally, some other basic drugs including metoprolol, atenolol, propranolol, bisoprolol, esmolol and ritodrine were tested for the investigation and evaluation of the enantiorecognition capability of the four dual systems. As expected, the synergistic effect was observed in four systems. Different results of these dual systems were also summarized.

Abstract
A new cationic β-cyclodextrin derivative, mono-6-deoxy-6-piperdine-β-cyclodextrin (PIP-β-CD), was synthesized and applied as a chiral selector for the enantioseparation of meptazinol and its three intermediate enantiomers (intermediates II-IV) in capillary electrophoresis. When PIP-β-CD was employed as the single CD system, intermediate II was baseline enantioseparated while the results for the other analytes were less satisfactory. In order to enhance the selectivity and resolution of meptazinol intermediate III and intermediate IV, dual CD systems of PIP-β-CD in combination with three different neutral CDs were synthesized and tested: β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), trimethyl-β-cyclodextrin (TM-β-CD) and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD). After investigating the effect on the enantioseparation efficiency of the nature and the concentration of both CDs, the dual CD system consisting of PIP-β-CD and HP-β-CD was shown to be the most efficient for the simultaneous enantioseparation of meptazinol intermediates III and IV.

Abstract
The members of the enantiomeric pairs frequently show rather different biological effects, so their chiral selective synthesis, pharmacological studies and analysis are necessary. CE has unique advantages in chiral analysis. The most frequently used chiral selectors are CDs in this field. This paper gives a short view on the advantages on CE in direct chiral separations, emphasizing the role of CDs. The reason for the broad selectivity spectra of CDs is discussed in detail. The physical background of chiral selective separations is briefly shown in CE. Their interaction mechanisms are shortly defined. The general trend of their use is statistically evaluated. Most frequently used CDs and CD derivatives are characterized. Advantages of ionizable CDs and single-isomer derivatives are shown. The general trend of their use is established.

Abstract
A capillary electrophoretic method has been developed for the enantioselective analysis of amisulpride in pharmaceutical formulations, using beta-cyclodextrin sulfate as the chiral selector. Several parameters, such as cyclodextrin type and concentration, buffer concentration and pH and capillary temperature were investigated for method optimisation. Baseline enantioseparation of the racemic compound was achieved in less than 10 min using a fused silica capillary (50 microm i.d. and 33.0, 8.5 cm, total and effective length, respectively), filled with a background electrolyte consisting of a 10mM citrate buffer at pH 3.5 supplemented with 0.22% (w/v) beta-cyclodextrin sulfate at 20 degrees C and applying a voltage of +15 kV. Formulation analysis was carried out after analyte extraction by methanol. The method was fully validated, with good results in terms of precision, selectivity, accuracy and amount of drug found with respect to the label claim. Thus, the method seems to be suitable for the enantiomeric analysis of amisulpride in pharmaceutical formulations.

Abstract
The purpose of this paper was to study the chiral recognition mechanism of enantioseparation of adrenaline and its analogues using capillary electrophoresis. The enantiomeric separation of adrenaline and its analogues has been developed using beta-cyclodextrins as the chiral selectors. All the tested compounds were separated under the same experimental conditions to study the chiral recognition mechanisms, using a low-pH buffer (50 mM Tris buffer at pH 2.5). By means of molecular docking the inclusion course between beta-cyclodextrins and enantiomers was investigated and thus the interaction energy was obtained by molecular mechanics calculations. The results suggest that the difference in interaction energy for the side chain part is most likely responsible for enantiomeric separation.

Abstract
Methods for enantiomeric purity by electrokinetic chromatography were developed and validated for three pharmaceutical compounds, each utilizing highly sulfated-gamma-cyclodextrin (HS-gamma-CD) as the chiral recognition agent. Two of the compounds are weak bases, hence charged at low pH, and the third is a quaternary nitrogen compound, charged at all pH. In each instance quantification was via an authentic reference standard with addition of an internal standard. Separation was on a 61 cm x 50 microm untreated capillary under reverse polarity with a background electrolyte of 5% HS-gamma-CD in pH 2.50 lithium phosphate buffer. Each method was validated with respect to the usual validation parameters, notably recovery and precision, yielding results, including limits of detection and quantitation, that allow reporting the minor enantiomer to 0.1% and less. In applying the methods, all batches of bulk drug tested were shown to be of enantiomeric purity > or =99.9%.

Abstract
A chiral procedure based on EKC was developed and validated for determination of the enantiomeric purity of PHA-543613, a drug candidate that was under development for treatment of the cognitive deficits of Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia. Separation of enantiomers is accomplished via differential, enantiospecific complexation with a single-isomer, precisely sulfated beta-CD and heptakis-6-sulfato-beta-CD (HpS-beta-CD). Both neutral and sulfated CDs were screened before selecting HpS-beta-CD as the chiral selector. The separation is conducted in a 61 cm x 50 microm uncoated fused silica capillary with 25 mM HpS-beta-CD in pH 2.50, 25 mM lithium phosphate as the separation buffer with detection at 220 nm. Application of reverse polarity at -30 kV results in an elution time of about 12 min for PHA-543613 and 13 min for the undesired S-enantiomer. Quantification is versus an authentic reference S-enantiomer as an external standard in combination with an internal standard. The procedure was validated over the range 0.1-2.0% w/w. The detection limit is 0.01-0.02%. The amount of distomer intrinsic to the drug substance is about 0.1% or less. The developed method was used to generate stability data on multiple lots: in one case for up to 3 years.

Abstract
Baseline separation of ten new substituted [1-(imidazo-1-yl)-1-phenylmethyl)] benzothiazolinone and benzoxazolinone derivatives, with one chiral center, was achieved by CD-EKC using highly sulfated CDs (alpha, beta, gamma highly S-CDs) as chiral selectors. The influence of the type and concentration of the chiral selectors on the enantioseparations was investigated. The highly S-CDs exhibit a very high enantioselectivity power since they allow excellent enantiomeric resolutions compared to those obtained with the neutral CDs. The enantiomers were resolved with analysis times inferior to 2.5 min and resolution factors R(s) of 3.73, 3.90, 1.40, and 4.35 for compounds 1, 2, 3, and 5, respectively, using 25 mM phosphate buffer at pH 2.5 containing either highly S-alpha-CD, highly S-beta-CD, and highly S-gamma-CD (3 or 4% w/v) at 298 K, with an applied field of 0.30 kV/cm. The determination of the enantiomer migration order for the various analytes and the study of the analyte structure-enantioseparation relationships display the high contribution of the interactions between the analytes phenyl ring and the CDs to the enantiorecognition process. The thermodynamic study of the analyte-CD affinities permits us to improve our knowledge about the enantioseparation mechanism.

Abstract
A new methylated beta-cyclodextrin with a low degree of substitution was characterized by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with evaporative light scattering detection. Using alpha-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid as the matrix and the thin layer method as the deposition procedure, MALDI-TOF-MS revealed that the mixture was composed of CDs bearing from 2 to 8 methyl groups with an average degree of substitution (DS) of 0.7 (i.e. 0.7 methyl groups per glucopyranose unit). Using a Purospher Star RP-18 endcapped column with acetonitrile-water mobile phase in gradient elution mode, HPLC was employed at analytical scale to obtain a chromatographic fingerprint of the crude mixture and at semi-preparative scale to fractionate it. MALDI-TOF-MS of these fractions revealed that the overall retention of the different derivatives, which depicts their polarity, was mainly driven by the DS and increased with the number of methyl groups on the CD moiety.

Abstract
Silica gel thin-layer chromatography plates impregnated with macrocyclic antibiotic, vancomycin, as chiral selector were prepared and used for the resolution of (+/-)-verapamil. A mobile phase system of acetonitrile-methanol-water (15:2.5:2.5, v/v) was worked out systematically. The effects of chiral selector, temperature and pH on resolution were also studied. The spots were detected with iodine vapors and the detection limit was found to be 0.074 microg of each enantiomers.

Abstract
Methanol enhances the enantioresolution of dimetindene enantiomers with carboxymethyl-beta-cyclodextrin (CMCD) as chiral selector at a concentration below its optimal value. The same effect was observed with ethanol (EtOH), although less pronounced. On the other hand, the addition of isopropanol (IP) or acetonitrile (ACN) decreases the enantioseparation. To elucidate the underlying mechanisms of these observed effects, other neutral (beta-CD, hydroxypropyl-beta-CD, and trimethyl-beta-CD) as well as chargeable (carboxyethyl-beta-CD and succinyl-beta-CD) CD derivatives were also tested with MeOH as organic modifier. It can be concluded that the increased enantioresolution of dimetindene enantiomers was only noted with CMCD as chiral selector and a short-chain organic modifier containing an alcohol function. The slight deprotonation of CMCD at pH 3.0 was only partly responsible for the high enantioselectivity and the 'favourable' effect of MeOH or EtOH. An important feature that can be concluded from these results is that for this particular analyte approximately the same resolution can be obtained with a lower CMCD concentration and the addition of some MeOH, compared to a MeOH free buffer.

Abstract
Nine racemic arylglycine amides were synthesized and successfully enantioseparated by capillary electrophoresis (CE) using highly sulfated beta-cyclodextrin (HS-beta-CD) as a chiral selector. Baseline enantioseparation of the analytes was obtained around neutral pH but not in the acidic conditions that are commonly used. HS-beta-CD content, buffer pH, type and concentration, and organic modifier concentration were studied and optimized for fast and efficient separation. A chiral CE separation system composed of 1.5% (w/v) HS-beta-CD, 0 to 10% (v/v) methanol and 20 mM 3-(N-morpholino)propanesulfonic acid at pH 6.5 was shown suitable for baseline enantioseparation of the mentioned amides within 6 min, including simultaneous enantioseparation of three positional isomer series (methyl-, methoxyl or chloro-substituted). By using this system, D-enantiomers migrated ahead of the L-enantiomers and the enantiomeric resolution order of arylglycine amides was more or less parallel to the pK(a), order of the analytes.
