Abstract
Oxidative status is important in reproductive performance and using two natural antioxidants is more beneficial than one in nulliparous rabbits. The goal, effect of vitamin E (VitE), D-limonene (DL), and VitE+DL on maternal LBW (MLBW), conception (CR), pregnancy (PR), and kindling rates (KR), gestation length (GL), total litter size at birth (TLSB) and weaning (TLSW), live kits at birth (LKB) and weaning (LKW), dead kits at birth (DKB) and weaning (DKW), kits mortality rate at weaning (KMRW), Kit weight at birth (KWB) and weaning (KWW), total kit weight at birth (TKWB) and weaning (TKWW), and concentrations of progesterone (P4) and Malondialdehyde (MDA), during first two pregnancies. A total of 24 healthy female WNZ rabbits were randomly selected and assigned into four groups (6/each). Control (animals injected with 1.0 mL propylene glycol), VitE (60 mg IM injection/animal, 2X/week pre-mating and 3X post-mating until mid-pregnancy, DL (20 mg IM injection/animal, 2X/week pre-mating and 1X at mating, and VitE+DL (IM injection/animal with the same doses and times applied in VitE and DL groups. All animals were treated during 1st pregnancy only. The results confirmed that animals treated with VitE+DL gained significant maternal LBW in 1st pregnancy, reduced dead kit number at birth and kit mortality rate at weaning, increased live kits and total kit weight at birth and weaning in the two pregnancies, and also increased significantly kit weight at birth and weaning in the treatments than controls in the two pregnancies, and DL was greater in 1st pregnancy. Progesterone concentrations in mid-pregnancy rose significantly in VitE+DL during 1st pregnancy and DL in 2nd pregnancy. Malondialdehyde concentrations dropped significantly in VitE and VitE+DL in mid-pregnancy in the two pregnancies. Eventually, the integration of VitE and DL displayed their unique properties for improving productive and reproductive performance in nulliparous rabbits.

Effect of ovarian stimulation by different gonadotrophin treatments on in vivo and in vitro reproductive efficiency of rabbit does under high ambient temperature. Trop Anim Health Prod 2020; 53:22. Abstract
Non-lactating multiparous NZW rabbit does (n = 227) were used in two experiments. In the 1st experiment (n = 87), does were i.m. injected with 0.1-ml saline/doe in day 0 (control, n = 29). Other does were injected with 25 IU equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG), followed by 0.2-ml gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH, n = 29) or 75 IU human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG, n = 29) per doe 48 h later. After 60 h of day 0, does in all groups were artificially inseminated (AI). In the 2nd experiment, does (n = 140) were mated (AI) after synchronization of estrus/ovulation with 25 IU eCG, and 75 IU hCG 48 h later. On day 5 post-AI, does were injected with saline (control), 75 IU hCG, 0.2 ml GnRH, or 25 IU eCG per doe. Injection of eCG with GnRH or hCG pre-AI significantly increased corpora lutea number, ovulation rate, total number/doe and recovery rate of embryos, viable embryos, hatched blastocysts, in vivo reproductive parameters, and concentration of progesterone and progesterone/estradiol 17-β ratio. Injection of eCG on day 5 post-AI significantly improved large and total follicle number, and in vivo reproductive efficiency. The corpora lutea number and impantation sites were significantly increased in the hCG and eCG groups. Fetal loss rate significantly increased only in the GnRH group. Under high ambient temperature, administration of eCG with hCG or GnRH injection pre-AI could be synchronized estrus/ovulation for improving in vivo and in vitro embryo production. In addition, pregnancy outcomes could be enhanced in rabbit does induced to ovulation by a single eCG or hCG dose on day 5 post-AI.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of a single administration of one of three different gonadotropins on Day 7 post-insemination on ovarian activity, progesterone (P4) concentration and pregnancy outcomes of rabbit does. Multiparous, non-lactating, V-line does were artificially inseminated after synchronization and ovulation induction with equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG; 25 IU im) and gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH; 0.8 μg buserelin im) 48 h later. On Day 7 post-inseminarion, does were randomly allocated into four groups (n = 40/group). Does of each group were intramuscularly injected with a single dose of one of physiological saline (placebo; control), GnRH (0.8 μg buserelin), human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG; 25 IU) or eCG (25 IU). Concentration of serum P4 was determined on Days 6, 9, 11 and 18 post-insemination. On Day 14 post-insemination, the ovaries and reproductive tracts of pregnant does were removed and weighed. Also, numbers of visible follicles, hemorrhagic follicles, corpora lutea of pregnancy (pCLs), new CLs (nCLs; formed after Day 7 post-insemination) and implantation sites were recorded. Conception rate, parturition rate, abortion rate, litter size/weight and litter viability were recorded. The highest (P < 0.05) reproductive tract and ovary weights were for eCG. The highest (P < 0.05) number of visible ovarian follicles was for eCG, whereas the lowest (P < 0.05) was for GnRH. Treatment with eCG increased (P < 0.05) numbers of pCLs and total implantation sites compared to the other groups. Treatment with GnRH or hCG increased (P < 0.05) number of nCLs compared to control and eCG. The highest rate of fetal loss was in does treated with GnRH. The concentration of serum P4 decreased (P < 0.05) following the treatment with GnRH and continued low until Day 18. However, it remained in line for control, hCG and eCG groups up to Day 11, then decreased (P < 0.05) for control and hCG on Day 18, being lower for hCG than control, while continued to increase for eCG up to Day 18. Compared to control, treatment with eCG improved (P < 0.05) conception and parturition rates by 24 and 22%; respectively, while GnRH and hCG treatments decreased (P < 0.05) them by 57 and 47.6%; respectively. Litter size and litter weight at birth were improved by eCG, but were adversely affectd by GnRH and hCG. In conclusion, a single administration of eCG 7 Days post-insemination could be recommended for improving pregnancy outcomes in rabbits.

Abstract
Vitamin E (Vit. E) is needed for young rabbits to prevent reproductive abnormalities, abortion and poor survivability of kits. Also, exogenous progesterone (P4) is needed for rabbits to enhance early embryonic development because of inadequate corpus luteum (CL) development at this age. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of injecting Vit. E and the combination Vit. E+P4 in young does on live body weight (LBW) gain, gestation length (GL), numbers of services/conception (NS), conception rate (CR), abortion rate (AR), litter size (LS), kit weight (KW), total litter weight (TLW), mortality rate (MR) and progesterone (P4) concentration. The group treated with Vit. E+P4 had a greater LBW gain and lesser AR at first and second pregnancy. Treatments did not have significant impact on GL and LS in the first two parities. Treatments resulted in a significantly lesser MR and greater TLW at the second parity. The Vit. E+P4 treatment resulted in a significantly lesser NS at the first parity, while Vit. E alone resulted in a significant reduction in NS at the second parity. Vit. E+P4 had a positive effect on CR at the first parity compared with controls. Vit. E alone increased CR at the second parity compared with that of the control group. The mean P4 concentration from mating to mid-pregnancy at first parity was significantly greater in the Vit. E+P4 than Vit. E and control groups. In conclusion, treatment with Vit. E+P4 at the first parity may be economically applied on rabbit farms because this treatment resulted in a greater maintenance of the first pregnancy and improved reproductive performance at the second parity as compared with results from the Vit. E treated and control groups.

Abstract
A unique non-laying strain of chickens with heritable hyperlipidemia and aortic atherosclerosis was first described in 1974. Subsequent work established that the phenotype results from a naturally occurring point mutation in the gene specifying the very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) receptor, a 95-kDa membrane protein which normally mediates the massive uptake of the main circulating hepatically-synthesized yolk precursors, VLDL and vitellogenin. As a result, hens of the mutant strain termed "restricted ovulator" (R/O) have approximately 5-fold elevations in circulating cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations compared with normal layers, and hepatic lipogenesis and cholesterogenesis are markedly attenuated due to feedback inhibition. R/O hens also exhibit hyperestrogenemia, hypoprogesteronemia, elevated circulating gonadotropins, and up-regulated pituitary progesterone receptor mRNA and isoforms. The ovaries of R/O hens are abnormal in that they lack a follicular hierarchy and contain many small preovulatory follicles of various colors, shapes, and sizes. However, since R/O hens occasionally lay eggs, it is possible that endocytic receptors other than the VLDL receptor may be able to facilitate oocyte growth and/or that yolk precursor uptake can occur via a nonspecific bulk process. A mammalian model of impaired fecundity with abnormal lipoprotein metabolism also has been described, but different mechanisms are likely responsible for its reproductive dysfunction. Nevertheless, as our understanding of the molecular physiology and biochemistry of avian oocyte growth continues to expand, in part due to studies of the R/O model, new analogies may emerge between avian and mammalian systems, which ultimately could help to answer important questions in reproductive biology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Based on the observation that ultrasmall superparamagnetic particles of iron oxides (USPIOs) are phagocytosed by cells of the mononuclear phagocytic system, the purpose of this study was to evaluate their use as a marker of atherosclerosis-associated inflammatory changes in the vessel wall before luminal narrowing is present. METHODS AND RESULTS Experiments were conducted on 6 heritable hyperlipidemic and 3 New Zealand White rabbits. 3D MR angiography (MRA) of the thoracic aorta was performed on all rabbits by use of a conventional paramagnetic contrast agent that failed to reveal any abnormalities. One week later, all rabbits except 1 of the hyperlipidemic animals were injected with a USPIO contrast agent (Sinerem, Guerbet) at a dose of 1 mmol Fe/kg. 3D MRA data sets collected over the subsequent 5 days showed increasing signal in the aortic lumen. Whereas the aortic wall of the control rabbits remained smooth and bright, marked susceptibility effects became evident on day 4 within the aortic walls of hyperlipidemic rabbits. Ex vivo imaging of aortic specimens confirmed the in vivo results. Histopathology documented marked Fe uptake in macrophages embedded in atherosclerotic plaque of the hyperlipidemic rabbits. Electron microscopy showed multiple cytoplasmic Fe particles in macrophages. No such changes were seen in control rabbits or in the hyperlipidemic rabbit that had not received Sinerem. CONCLUSIONS USPIOs are phagocytosed by macrophages in atherosclerotic plaques of the aortic wall of hyperlipidemic rabbits in a quantity sufficient to cause susceptibility effects detectable by MRI.

Abstract
Morulae were flushed from the oviducts and uteri of New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits superovulated with either 6 (3 d) or 8 (4 d) injections of FSH and from non-superovulated controls. The percentages of embryos recovered from 4 d (100%, n = 8) donors was significantly higher (P < 0.01) than that of 3 d (76%, n = 16) and control (87%, n = 22) donors. Overall, fertilization rates were significantly lower for the 3 d embryos (P < 0.01). Most (86 to 90%) morulae were morphologically suitable for vitrification in an ethylene glycol-based solution. Following storage in liquid nitrogen, morulae were rapidly thawed and transferred to the uteri of pseudopregnant recipients. The total number of kits born for the 3 d, 4 d, and control groups was 40, 61 and 48, respectively. The percentage of live kits from morulae transferred was significantly lower for the 3 d (20%, n = 201) than either the 4 d (36%, n = 169; P < 0.01) or the control (31%, n = 157; P < 0.05) group. The mean number of kits born/recipient for the 3 d (2.4 +/- 2.9), 4 d (4.7 +/- 3.5), and control (3.0 +/- 2.2) protocols did not differ (P > 0.05). The estimated overall efficiency of producing kits based on normal morulae collected for control and 4 d groups, however, was nearly two-fold that for females given 6 FSH treatments. We conclude that the 4 d FSH superovulation regimen enhances the efficiency of rabbit reproductive biotechnology after embryo cryopreservation. These findings have important implications for rabbit colony management using embryo cryopreservation.

Abstract
Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) plays an important role in atherogenesis. Atheroma formation is reduced significantly in Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic (WHHL) rabbits by antioxidants such as probucol and vitamin E. The herbal mixture Maharishi Amrit Kalash-4 (MAK-4) inhibits Cu+2 -induced LDL oxidation, and enzymatic- and nonenzymatic-induced microsomal lipid peroxidation. We tested the effect of MAK-4 on the development of atheroma in WHHL rabbits. Eleven rabbits were divided into two groups: controls (n = 5) and a group fed 6% (w/w) MAK-4 (n = 6). Blood was drawn for biochemical analysis every two months and at necropsy, six months after the special diet was started. The aortas were preserved in formalin. The percentage area of aortic arch covered with visible plaque in the MAK-4 group (22.5 +/- 4.2%, mean +/- SE) was significantly reduced (p < 0.01) compared to the control group (47.6 +/- 6.8%, mean +/- SE). The MAK-4 group showed a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in lipid peroxide, and a significant increase (p < 0.05) in glutathione peroxidase and resistance of LDL to endothelial cell-induced and cupric ion-catalyzed oxidation (4.5 h and 5 h lag phase, respectively, for the MAK-4 group; 0 h lag phase for both for the controls). These findings suggest MAK-4 reduces atheroma formation through its antioxidant activity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the prevalence and clinical significance of hypolipidemia found in critically ill patients, and whether the addition of a reconstituted lipoprotein preparation could inhibit the generation of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) in acute-phase blood taken from these patients. SETTING Surgical intensive care unit (ICU) of a large urban university hospital. DESIGN Prospective case series. PATIENTS A total of 32 patients with a variety of critical illnesses had lipid and lipoprotein concentrations determined. Six patients and six age- and gender-matched control subjects had whole blood in vitro studies of the effect of lipoprotein on lipopolysaccharide mediated TNF-alpha production. INTERVENTIONS Blood samples were drawn on admission to the ICU and over a subsequent 8-day period. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Mean serum lipid and lipoprotein values obtained from patients within 24 hrs of transfer to the surgical ICU were extremely low: mean total cholesterol was 117 mg/dL (3.03 mmol/L), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol 71 mg/dL (1.84 mmol/L), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol 25 mg/dL (0.65 mmol/L). Only the mean triglyceride concentration of 105 mg/dL (1.19 mmol/L), and the mean lipoprotein(a) concentration of 25 mg/dL (0.25 g/L) were within the normal range. During the first 8 days following surgical ICU admission, there were trends toward increasing lipid and lipoprotein concentrations that were significant for triglycerides and apolipoprotein B. Survival did not correlate with the lipid or lipoprotein concentrations, but patients with infections had significantly lower (p = .008) high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations compared with noninfected patients. Lipopolysaccharide-stimulated production of TNF-alpha in patient and control blood samples was completely suppressed by the addition of 2 mg/mL of a reconstituted high-density lipoprotein preparation. CONCLUSIONS Patients who are critically ill from a variety of causes have extremely low cholesterol and lipoprotein concentrations. Correction of the hypolipidemia by a reconstituted high-density lipoprotein preparation offers a new strategy for the prevention and treatment of endotoxemia.

Abstract
We have tested hypotheses relating lipoprotein structure to function as measured by the relative ability to neutralize endotoxin by comparing natural human lipoproteins, a chemically defined form of reconstituted high-density lipoprotein (R-HDL), and a lipid emulsion (Intralipid). The human whole-blood system was used as an in vitro model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) binding protein and CD14-dependent activation of cytokine production. When lipoproteins were compared on the basis of protein content, R-HDL was most effective in reducing tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) production followed in order by very low density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, Intralipid, and natural HDL. However, when these particles were compared by protein, phospholipid, cholesterol, or triglyceride content by stepwise linear regression analysis, only phospholipid was correlated to effectiveness (r2 = 0.873; P < 0.0001). Anti-CD14 monoclonal antibodies MY4 and 3C10 inhibited LPS binding protein and CD14-dependent activation of TNF-alpha production by LPS at LPS concentrations up to approximately 1.0 ng/ml. R-HDL (2 mg of protein per ml) blocked TNF-alpha production by LPS from both smooth- and rough-type gram-negative bacteria at concentrations up to 100 ng of LPS per ml but had little effect on heat-killed gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and no effect on other LPS-independent stimuli tested. These results support our hypothesis that LPS is neutralized by binding to phospholipid on the surface of R-HDL and demonstrate that R-HDL is a potent inhibitor of the induction of TNF-alpha by LPS from both rough- and smooth-form gram-negative bacteria in whole human blood.
