Abstract
Spermiogenesis in the progenetic spathebothriidean cestode Diplocotyle olrikii has been examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for the first time. Along with the typical features of spermatozoon cytodifferentiation (e.g., the electron-dense material in the apical region of the differentiation zone in the early stage of spermiogenesis, the intercentriolar body which is composed of three electron-dense plates and two electron-lucent zones, the orthogonal development of the two flagella, a flagellar rotation, proximo-distal fusion, the presence of two pairs of electron-dense attachment zones), new for the Eucestoda is detection of the formation of two types of free flagella during spermiogenesis in progenetic D. olrikii, exhibiting either standard 9 + '1' trepaxonematan pattern, or atypical 9 + 0 structure. Various combinations of these two types of flagella resulted in the production of three types of male gametes during spermiogenesis in this spathebothriidean cestode. The first type is represented with the two axonemes of the 9 + '1' structure; the second type exhibits two different axonemes, i.e., one with 9 + '1' and the other of 9 + 0 pattern; and the third type has two axonemes with atypical 9 + 0 structure. The occurrence of three sperm types in progenetic D. olrikii is associated with typical spermiogenesis and has never been described previously in the Platyhelminthes. We suppose that heteromorphism of male gametes in D. olrikii might be linked to progenesis, i.e., the programmed sexual maturation detected during the larval/developmental stage of an organism.

Abstract
The wide biodiversity and economic importance of digeneans have motivated a great deal of research in the last decade, focussing on their phylogenetic positions. Molecular research was instrumental for our understanding of phylogeny in the Digenea, but spermatological studies have also provided many results, which are potentially useful for phylogeny; however, the complete spermatological data set has never been reviewed in a whole phylogenetic perspective. Spermatological data are now available for more than 100 species, belonging to 15 superfamilies and 46 families. In this paper, we try to summarize the current knowledge about sperm structure in the digeneans and propose a classification of digenean spermatozoa into five basic models. The main ultrastructural characters used are (1) the type of axoneme, (2) the lateral expansion, (3) the association 'external ornamentation of the plasma membrane + cortical microtubules', (4) the field of cortical microtubules and its number, (5) the location of the external ornamentation, (6) the location of the maximum number of cortical microtubules and (7) the number of mitochondria. We also outline the most interesting features for phylogenetic inference and their possible value in the context of digenean systematics, phylogeny and evolution. Associations between sperm models and superfamilies were found as follows: Type 1 in the Schistosomatoidea; Type 2 in the Hemiuroidea; Type 3 in the Opecoeloidea, Lepocreadioidea, Haploporoidea and Opisthorchioidea; Type 4 in the Gorgoderoidea, Microphalloidea, Plagiorchioidea and Gymnophalloidea; Type 5 in the Echinostomatoidea, Microscaphidioidea, Paramphistomoidea, Pronocephaloidea and Brachylaimoidea.

Abstract
The ultrastructure of the mature spermatozoon of Gyliauchen sp., a parasite of the dusky rabbitfish Siganus fuscescens, was studied by transmission electron microscopy. The spermatozoon possesses two axonemes of the 9+"1" pattern of Trepaxonemata, four attachment zones, one mitochondrion, a nucleus, cortical microtubules, external ornamentation of the plasma membrane, and spine-like bodies. The main characteristics of this spermatozoon are the presence of one mitochondrion, spine-like bodies not associated with the external ornamentation, and a posterior extremity of type 3 that is characterized by the following sequence: posterior extremity of the nucleus then posterior extremity of the second axoneme. Numerous other ultrastructural features are also discussed and compared to the digenean spermatology literature. This is the first study of a member of the Gyliauchenidae and the fourth within the Lepocreadioidea. The results show that many ultrastructural characters are variable within this superfamily and could be useful for phylogeny.

Abstract
AbstractUltrastructural study of spermiogenesis and of the spermatozoon of Carmyerius endopapillatus has enabled to describe some characteristics of this digenea. The intercentriolar body situated between the two striated roots and the two centrioles, presents a symmetric organization. Both external bands of this intercentriolar body are made up of a row of granules. During spermiogenesis, a flagellar rotation of 90° is described. The old spermatid does not present external ornamentations. The spermatozoon is characterized, in its anterior region, by the presence of a lateral expansion exhibiting one spinelike body. In C. endopapillatus, external ornamentations are localized only at the level where the lateral expansion appears. The posterior extremity of spermatozoon exhibits a nucleus surrounded by a plasmic membrane lacking microtubules, but presenting a small lateral expansion. This is the first species of Gastrothylacidae family studied by transmission electron microscopy.

Spermiogenesis follows the usual pattern found in the digeneans, but a single noteworthy characteristic concerns the centriole, which presents a "prominent pear-shaped electron-dense region." Spermiogenesis in D. inflata begins with the formation of a differentiation zone. The two centrioles give rise to flagella. These two flagella undergo a rotation of 90 degrees and fuse with the median cytoplasmic process. The proximo-distal fusion occurs at the level of attachment zones. The mature spermatozoon of D. inflata possesses five regions and presents all the features found in the digenean gamete. However, several characteristics allow us to distinguish the spermatozoon of D. inflata from other digenetic trematoda, namely the external ornamentations of the plasmic membrane, the anterior and posterior extremities. Furthermore, the distal part of the nucleus in front of those of the mitochondria appears such a distinctive criterion in the spermatozoon of this species. Our ultrastructural investigations produce new data on the reproduction of D. inflata, which may be useful for the understanding of the phylogenetic relationships in the Deropristidae family.

This paper constitutes the first ultrastructural study of spermiogenesis and the spermatozoon of a Digenea belonging to the family Zoogonidae, Diphterostomum brusinae. Spermiogenesis follows the general pattern found in the digeneans. It begins with the formation of a differentiation zone in the spermatid. The two centrioles give rise to flagella. These two flagella undergo a rotation of 90 degrees and fuse with the median cytoplasmic process. The proximo-distal fusion occurs at the level of attachment zones. The mature spermatozoon of D. brusinae presents all the features found in the digeneans gametes: two axonemes, mitochondrion, nucleus and two bundles of parallel cortical microtubules. Nevertheless, several characteristics distinguish the spermatozoon of D. brusinae from other digeneans, in particular the external ornamentations of the plasma membrane and the anterior and posterior extremities. The description of the ultrastructural features of reproduction in this species would contribute to the understanding of the phylogenetic relationships in the Zoogonidae family.

Abstract
The present paper describes the spermiogenesis and the ultrastructure of the spermatozoon of Fasciola gigantica, as revealed by transmission electron microscopy. Spermiogenesis in F. gigantica begins with the formation of a differentiation zone containing 2 centrioles with associated striated roots and an intercentriolar body between them. Each centriole develops a flagellum. Proximodistal fusion of these flagella with the median cytoplasmic extension gives rise to the spermatozoon. Spermiogenesis in F. gigantica is characterized by the formation of a dorsolateral cytoplasmic expansion, an external ornamentation of the cell membrane, and spinelike bodies. These 3 structures were also observed in the anterior part of the spermatozoon. Our study describes for the first time the simultaneous presence of dorsolateral cytoplasmic expansion, external ornamentation of the plasma membrane, and spinelike bodies in the spermatozoon of a trematode.

Abstract
Ultrastructural observations of spermatogenesis and sperm development of Saccocoelioides godoyi, an intestinal parasite of Leporinus friderici (Bloch, 1794) are described. The irregular-shaped spermatogonia form a peripheral layer, and show a prominent nucleus. Spermatocytes are larger than spermatogonia, and in the early stage present synaptonemal complex. Spermatids show nuclei smaller than the spermatocytes. Spermiogenesis is characterized by outgrowth of the zone of differentiation, presenting basal bodies, separated by an intercentriolar body. At the end of this process, the spermatozoa are released into the residual cytoplasmic mass. The spermatozoa of S. godoyi are elongate, similar to the pattern described for other Digenea, showing nuclei, mitochondria and two axonemes with the 9+1 configuration. The peripheral cortical microtubules on the dorsal and ventral faces are laterally interrupted.

Abstract
The spermatogenesis and spermatozoon of Dicrocoelium dendriticum were studied by transmission electron microscopy. Peripheric accessory cells project between germ cells. Each spermatogonium gives rise to 32 spermatozoa. The stages in spermiogenesis include development of the zone of differentiation, appearance of the intercentriolar body flanked by two centrioles from each of which a free axoneme and a striated rootlet grow, outgrowth of the differentiation zone to form the median cytoplasmic process and migration of the nucleus and mitochondria into it, and rotation of the flagella and subsequent proximodistal fusion of the three projections to form a monopartite spermatozoon. The spermatozoon possess two incorporated axonemes with the "9 + 1" pattern typical of those in trepaxonematid plathelminths. beta-Glycogen particles accumulate in the spermatozoa after they have separated from the cytophore as revealed by Thiery's method. This study confirms in a further family, Dicrocoeliidae, the constant pattern of spermiogenesis and spermatozoon structure in Digenea.

Abstract
Spermatogenesis and the fine structure of the mature spermatozoon of Fasciola hepatica have been studied by transmission electron microscopy. The primary spermatogonia display a typical gonial morphology and occupy the periphery of the testis. They undergo 3 mitotic divisions to give rise to 8 primary spermatocytes forming a rosette of cells connected to a central cytophore. The primary spermatocytes undergo 2 meiotic divisions, resulting in 32 spermatids that develop into spermatozoa. Intranuclear synaptonemal complexes in primary spermatocytes confirm the first meiotic division. The onset of spermiogenesis is marked by the formation of the zone of differentiation which contains 2 basal bodies and a further centriole derivative, the central body. The zone extends away from the spermatid cell to form the median process; into this migrates the differentiated and elongate nucleus. Simultaneously, 2 axonemes develop from the basal bodies. During development, they rotate through 90 degrees to extend parallel to the median process. The migration of the nucleus to the distal end of the median process coincides with the fusion of the axonemes to the latter to form a monopartite spermatozoon. The mature spermatozoon possesses 2 axonemes of the 9 + '1' pattern typical of parasitic platyhelminths, 2 elongate mitochondria and a variable array of peripheral microtubules. The nuclear region of the spermatozoon is immotile. The value of sperm ultrastructure as a taxonomic tool in platyhelminth phylogeny is discussed.

Abstract
The thread-like spermatozoon of the crab parasite Microphallus primas was studied by electron microscopy. A survey of the head region of the spermatozoon reveals three features hitherto unknown in Platyhelminthes spermatozoa. The first is the aberrant inclusion of the nucleus within one of the two axonemes, limited to the head end region. The second is the coexistence, in the same axoneme, of two patterns, 9 + 0 (doublets without dynein arms) and 9 + "1". The third is the presence of a layer of cortical microtubules running longitudinally from the zone where the nucleus goes from axoneme to the tail region (where the two flagella start). The sequence of events in spermatogenesis is similar to that described for most of the Digenea trematodes, and the spermiogenesis process conforms to a common plan in nearly the whole group.

Abstract
The structure of the male reproductive system of Schistosoma margrebowiei as viewed by light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy is described. The cirrus tube opens at the genital pore without the presence of a cirrus and is spongy and leaf-like. The structure of the germinal and non-germinal cells of the testes are described. The spermatozoon consists of a head, without an acrosome, and a flagellum with a 9 + 0 arrangement of microtubules in the axial filament. A large mass of mitochondria is situated in the anterior end of the head and cortically arranged longitudinally running microtubules are present. The apical region of the epithelial cells of the vas deferens extends into the lumen of the duct forming convoluted lamellae. This arrangement, together with the presence of dense bodies within the cells, suggests that these cells have a secretory function.

Abstract
The seminal receptacle of Paragonimus ohirai contains not only mature spermatozoa, but also atypical and degenerate ones, suggesting that abnormal spermatozoa are retained in this organ. The spermatozoon is of a parallel biflagellar type with cortical microtubules, consisting of the anterior region, first mitochondrial region, intermediate (amitochondrial) region, second mitochondrial region, posterior nuclear region (PNR) and tail region (TR). The first third of the spermatozoon exhibits typical undulatory movement, while the middle part shows vibratory movement. At the area between head and midsections (H-M area) the peripheral doublets of axonemes are interrupted, and the external ornamentation is distributed widely around this portion. Throughout the immotile PNR and TR, the axonemes lack the dynein arms of their peripheral doublets. H-M, PNR, and TR ultrastructural characteristics are specific in P. ohirai spermatozoon and seem to be closely related to its pattern of movement.

Abstract
The sperm flagella of the eel, Anguilla anguilla, are capable of vigorous motion in spite of having an axoneme with reduced structure that lacks the outer dynein arms, radial spokes and spoke heads, the two central tubules and the central tubule projections that are all part of the standard "9+2" axoneme. These sperm progress forward rapidly as a result of the propagation of helicoidal waves distally along the flagellum. Their flagellar beat frequencies are high, 93 Hz at 21 degrees C, and they roll at a frequency of about 19 Hz. Eel sperm could be demembranated with Nonidet P-40 and reactivated with MgATP2- in 0.22 M K acetate at pH 8.1. The reactivated motility closely resembles that of the live sperm, with a beat frequency of 69 Hz, but the demembranated flagella are unusually fragile, and commonly disintegrate by a combination of splitting, coiling, and sliding within a few minutes. Little reactivation is obtained if acetate is replaced by Cl- in the reactivating medium. The Michaelis constant for beat frequency (0.2 mM) is similar to that obtained for several "9+2" flagella. These sperm, however, appear to lack the mechanism by which Ca2+ regulates waveform. Our results indicate that eel sperm flagella, which at rest are straight, are induced to bend helicoidally by ATP, as the result of sliding between tubules that is blocked at both the base and tip of the organelle. The flagellar waveform consists of a series of planar bends separated by short regions of right-handed twist, which give it an overall left-handed helicoidal form.
