Abstract
A series of bis(4-pentylpyridinium) compounds with a variety of spacers between the pyridinium headgroups was synthesised, and the antifungal activity of these compounds was investigated. Lengthening the alkyl spacer between the pentylpyridinium headgroups from 12 to 16 methylene units resulted in increased antifungal activity against C. neoformans and C. albicans, but also resulted in increased hemolytic activity and cytotoxicity against mammalian cells. However, inclusion of an ortho-substituted benzene ring in the centre of the alkyl spacer resulted in decreased cytotoxicity and hemolytic activity, while maintaining antifungal potency. Replacement of the alkyl and aromatic-containing spacers by more hydrophilic ethylene glycol groups resulted in a loss of antifungal activity. Some of the compounds inhibited fungal PLB1 activity, but the low correlation of this inhibition with antifungal potency indicates PLB1 inhibition is unlikely to be the predominant mode of antifungal action of this class of compounds, with preliminary studies suggesting they may act via disruption of fungal mitochondrial function.

Abstract
A total synthesis of guineensine, a secondary metabolite of the Piperaceae family, has been executed in 12 steps with an overall yield of 27%. Key steps in the synthesis featured novel application of a Julia-Kocienski olefination reaction which effectively constructed alkenamide skeleton. This contributes a unique approach to the synthesis of the piperamide alkaloids.

Abstract
Maresin is a potent anti-inflammatory lipid mediator derived from docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). A highly convergent total synthesis of two proposed structures of C7-epimeric maresins from the four known fragments was achieved in 17 steps. The three key coupling reactions were the BF(3)-mediated alkyne attack on the epoxide, chiral titanium complex-promoted enantioselective alkyne addition to the aldehyde, and a Julia-Kocienski olefination. The two synthesized diastereomers were found to be comparably active in blocking neutrophil infiltration in the acute peritonitis model.

Abstract
New Mo(II) complexes BnEt(3)N(+)[Mo(CO)(4)ClBr(2)](-) (A) and Mo(CO)(5)(OTf)(2) (B) and their W(II) congeners D and E have been developed as catalysts for the title reactions. Unlike other Lewis acids, the latter catalysts exhibit cis-stereoselectivity in the cyclization of citronellal (1 --> 3 with A and 1 --> 5 with B). Isotopic labeling allowed formulation of the reaction mechanism, according to which these complexes act as bulky Lewis acids, eta(1)-coordinated to the carbonyl oxygen. The stereochemistry appears to be controlled by the protruding ligand L(p), which dictates the boatlike transition state III. The kinetically formed cis-alkenol 3 can be equilibrated by [Mo(CO)(4)Br(2)](2) (C) or ZnCl(2) to its trans-epimer 2 via a retro-ene reaction.
