Synchronization and entrainment of metapopulations: A trade-off among time-induced heterogeneity, dispersal, and seasonal force

Demographic and environmental heterogeneities are prevalent across many natural systems. Earlier studies on metapopulation models have mostly considered heterogeneities either in the demographic parameters or in the interaction strength and topology between the spatially separated patches. In contrast, here we study the dynamics of a metapopulation model where each of the uncoupled patches has different periods of oscillations (period mismatch). We show different synchronization dynamics governed by both period mismatch and dispersal in neighboring patches. Indeed, we find both appearance and disappearance of phase synchronization, quasiperiodic oscillations, and period doubling of limit cycle. We also quantify the effect of seasonal variation (entrainment) and dispersal on species synchrony using phase-response curve and a synchrony measure, which thereof identify the influence of stochasticity on species persistence through trade-off mechanisms. Our results show that trade-offs among period mismatch, dispersal, and external force can drive entrained oscillations as well as asynchronous population dynamics that structure ecological communities.

Successional state dynamics: a novel approach to modeling nonequilibrium foodweb dynamics

Communities and ecosystems are often far from equilibrium, but our understanding of nonequilibrium dynamics has been hampered by a paucity of analytical tools. Here I describe a novel approach to modeling seasonally forced food webs, called "successional state dynamics" (SSD). It is applicable to communities where species dynamics are fast relative to the external forcing, such as plankton and other microbes, diseases, and some insect communities. The approach treats succession as a series of state transitions driven by both the internal dynamics of species interactions and external forcing. First, I motivate the approach with numerical solutions of a seasonally forced predator-prey model. Second, I describe how to set up and analyze an SSD model. Finally, I apply the techniques to three additional models of two-species interactions: resource competition (r-K selection), facilitation, and flip-flop competition (where the competitive hierarchy alternates over time). This approach allows easy and thorough exploration of how dynamics depend on the environmental forcing regime, and uncovers unexpected phenomena such as multiple stable annual trajectories and year-to-year irregularity in successional trajectories (chaos).

Remarks on antipredator behavior and food chain dynamics

When consumers feeding on a resource spend time in avoiding high risks of predation, the predator functional response declines with predator density. While this is well established, less attention has been paid to the dependence of the consumer functional response on predator density. Here we show how the separation of behavioral and ecological timescales allows one to determine both responses starting from an explicit behavioral model. Within the general set-up considered in this paper, the two functional responses can tend toward Holling type II responses when consumers react only weakly to predation. Thus, the main characteristics of the standard Rosenzweig-MacArthur tritrophic food chain (logistic resource and Holling type II consumer and predator) remain valid also when consumers have weak antipredator behavior. Moreover, through numerical analysis, we show that in a particular but interesting case pronounced antipredator behaviors stabilize the system.
