Recent Advances in Nonclassical Interligand Si…H Interactions

Cationic Bis(hydrosilane)-Coinage-Metal Complexes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Use as Catalysts for Outer-Sphere C=O Hydrosilylation Not Involving Metal Hydrides

The preparation of cationic bis(hydrosilane)-coinage-metal complexes by chloride abstraction from the neutral metal chloride precursors with Na[BArF 4] is described. Unlike previously reported hydrosilane-stabilized copper and silver complexes, the presented complexes are cationic and feature two bidentate (ortho-silylphenyl)phosphine ligands. These complexes were fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis, revealing that both Si-H bonds are activated by the Lewis acidic cationic metal center. The new complexes were found to be effective in catalytic carbonyl hydrosilylation, leading to the corresponding silyl ethers under mild conditions without the addition of an external base. Combined mechanistic control experiments and quantum chemical calculations support an ionic outer-sphere mechanism, in which a neutral metal alkoxide species instead of a metal hydride is the key intermediate that interacts with the silylcarboxonium ion to generate the silyl ether.

σ-GeH and Germyl Cationic Pt(II) Complexes

The low electron count Pt(II) complexes [Pt(NHC')(NHC)][BAr^F] (where NHC is a N-heterocyclic carbene ligand and NHC' its metalated form) react with tertiary hydrogermanes HGeR₃ at room temperature to generate the 14-electron platinum(II) germyl derivatives [Pt(GeR₃)(NHC)₂][BAr^F]. Low-temperature NMR studies allowed us to detect and characterize spectroscopically some of the σ-GeH intermediates [Pt(η²-HGeR₃)(NHC')(NHC)][BAr^F] that evolve into the platinum-germyl species. One of these compounds has been characterized by X-ray diffraction studies, and the interaction of the H-Ge bond with the platinum center has been analyzed in detail by computational methods, which suggest that the main contribution is the donation of the H-Ge to a σ*(Pt-C) orbital, but backdonation from the platinum to the σ*(Ge-H) orbital is significant. Primary and secondary hydrogermanes also produce the corresponding platinum-germyl complexes, a result that contrasts with the reactivity observed with primary silanes, in which carbon-silicon bond-forming reactions have been reported. According to density functional theory calculations, the formation of Pt-Ge/C-H bonds is both kinetically and thermodynamically preferred over the competitive reaction pathway leading to Pt-H/C-Ge bonds.

Bonding Situation of σ-E-H Complexes in Transition Metal and Main Group Compounds

The ambiguous bonding situation of σ-E-H (E=Si, B) complexes in transition metal compounds has been rationalized by means of Density Functional Theory calculations. To this end, the combination of the Energy Decomposition Analysis (EDA) method and its Natural Orbital for Chemical Valance (NOCV) extension has been applied to representative complexes described in the literature where the possible η¹ versus η² coordination mode is not unambiguously defined. Our quantitative analyses, which complement previous data based on the application of the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) approach, indicate that there exists a continuum between genuine η¹ and η² modes depending mainly on the strength of the backdonation. Finally, we also applied this EDA-NOCV approach to related main-group species where the backdonation is minimal.

Distinct modes of Si-H binding to Rh in complexes of a phosphine-diarylamido-silane (SiNP) pincer ligand

Syntheses of Rh complexes of the phosphine-amido-silane SiNP ligand are reported. The reaction of the parent (SiNP)H ligand (4) with 0.5 equiv. [(COE)RhCl]₂ (COE = cis-cyclooctene) in the presence of NaN(SiME₃)₂ resulted in the formation of (SiNP)Rh(COE) (5). Compound 5 was converted to a series of (SiNP)Rh(P(OR)₃) complexes 6-10 (R = Ph, ⁱPr, ⁿBu, Et, or Me) by treatment with the corresponding phosphite. NMR and XRD structural data, as well as the DFT computational analysis indicate that compounds 5-10 are divided into two structural Types (A and B), differing in the nature of the interaction of the Si-H bond of the SiNP ligand with Rh.

Silyl-Osmium(IV)-Trihydride Complexes Stabilized by a Pincer Ether-Diphosphine: Formation and Reactions with Alkynes

Complex OsH₄{κ³-P,O,P-[xant(PⁱPr₂)₂]} (1) activates the Si-H bond of triethylsilane, triphenylsilane, and 1,1,1,3,5,5,5-heptamethyltrisiloxane to give the silyl-osmium(IV)-trihydride derivatives OsH₃(SiR₃){κ³-P,O,P-[xant(PⁱPr₂)₂]} [SiR₃ = SiEt₃ (2), SiPh₃ (3), SiMe(OSiMe₃)₂ (4)] and H₂. The activation takes place via an unsaturated tetrahydride intermediate, resulting from the dissociation of the oxygen atom of the pincer ligand 9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis(diisopropylphosphino)xanthene (xant(PⁱPr₂)₂). This intermediate, which has been trapped to form OsH₄{κ²-P,P-[xant(PⁱPr₂)₂]}(PⁱPr₃) (5), coordinates the Si-H bond of the silanes to subsequently undergo a homolytic cleavage. Kinetics of the reaction along with the observed primary isotope effect demonstrates that the Si-H rupture is the rate-determining step of the activation. Complex 2 reacts with 1,1-diphenyl-2-propyn-1-ol and 1-phenyl-1-propyne. The reaction with the former affords Os{C≡CC(OH)Ph₂}₂{=C=CHC(OH)Ph₂}{κ³-P,O,P-[xant(PⁱPr₂)₂]} (6), which catalyzes the conversion of the propargylic alcohol into (E)-2-(5,5-diphenylfuran-2(5H)-ylidene)-1,1-diphenylethan-1-ol, via (Z)-enynediol. In methanol, the hydroxyvinylidene ligand of 6 dehydrates to allenylidene, generating Os{C≡CC(OH)Ph₂}₂{=C=C=CPh₂}{κ³-P,O,P-[xant(PⁱPr₂)₂]} (7). The reaction of 2 with 1-phenyl-1-propyne leads to OsH{κ¹-C,η²-[C₆H₄CH₂CH=CH₂]}{κ³-P,O,P-[xant(PⁱPr₂)₂]} (8) and PhCH₂CH=CH(SiEt₃).

Metathesis between E-C(spn ) and H-C(sp3 ) σ-Bonds (E=Si, Ge; n=2, 3) on an Osmium-Polyhydride

The silylation of a phosphine of OsH6 (Pi Pr3 )2 is performed via net-metathesis between Si-C(spn ) and H-C(sp3 ) σ-bonds (n=2, 3). Complex OsH6 (Pi Pr3 )2 activates the Si-H bond of Et3 SiH and Ph3 SiH to give OsH5 (SiR3 )(Pi Pr3 )2 , which yield OsH4 {κ1 -P,η2 -SiH-[i Pr2 PCH(Me)CH2 SiR2 H]}(Pi Pr3 ) and R-H (R=Et, Ph), by displacement of a silyl substituent with a methyl group of a phosphine. Such displacement is a first-order process, with activation entropy consistent with a rate determining step occurring via a highly ordered transition state. It displays selectivity, releasing the hydrocarbon resulting from the rupture of the weakest Si-substituent bond, when the silyl ligand bears different substituents. Accordingly, reactions of OsH6 (Pi Pr3 )2 with dimethylphenylsilane, and 1,1,1,3,5,5,5-heptamethyltrisiloxane afford OsH5 (SiR2 R')(Pi Pr3 )2 , which evolve into OsH4 {κ1 -P,η2 -GeH-[i Pr2 PCH(Me)CH2 SiR2 H]}(Pi Pr3 ) (R=Me, OSiMe3 ) and R'-H (R'=Ph, Me). Exchange reaction is extended to Et3 GeH. The latter reacts with OsH6 (Pi Pr3 )2 to give OsH5 (GeEt3 )(Pi Pr3 )2 , which loses ethane to form OsH4 {κ1 -P,η2 -GeH-[i Pr2 PCH(Me)CH2 GeEt2 H]}(Pi Pr3 ).

Activation of Si-H and B-H bonds by Lewis acidic transition metals and p-block elements: same, but different

In this Perspective we discuss the ability of transition metal complexes to activate and cleave the Si-H and B-H bonds of hydrosilanes and hydroboranes (tri- and tetra-coordinated) in an electrophilic manner, avoiding the need for the metal centre to undergo two-electron processes (oxidative addition/reductive elimination). A formal polarization of E-H bonds (E = Si, B) upon their coordination to the metal centre to form σ-EH complexes (with coordination modes η1 or η2) favors this type of bond activation that can lead to reactivities involving the formation of transient silylium and borenium/boronium cations similar to those proposed in silylation and borylation processes catalysed by boron and aluminium Lewis acids. We compare the reactivity of transition metal complexes and boron/aluminium Lewis acids through a series of catalytic reactions in which pieces of evidence suggest mechanisms involving electrophilic reaction pathways.

Hydrosilane σ-Adduct Intermediates in an Adaptive Zinc-Catalyzed Cross-dehydrocoupling of Si-H and O-H Bonds

Three-coordinate Ph BOXMe 2 ZnR (Ph BOXMe 2 =phenyl-(4,4-dimethyl-oxazolinato; R=Me: 2 a, Et: 2 b) catalyzes the dehydrocoupling of primary or secondary silanes and alcohols to give silyl ethers and hydrogen, with high turnover numbers (TON; up to 107 ) under solvent-free conditions. Primary and secondary silanes react with small, medium, and large alcohols to give various degrees of substitution, from mono- to tri-alkoxylation, whereas tri-substituted silanes do not react with MeOH under these conditions. The effect of coordinative unsaturation on the behavior of the Zn catalyst is revealed through a dramatic variation of both rate law and experimental rate constants, which depend on the concentrations of both the alcohol and hydrosilane reactants. That is, the catalyst adapts its mechanism to access the most facile and efficient conversion. In particular, either alcohol or hydrosilane binds to the open coordination site on the Ph BOXMe 2 ZnOR catalyst to form a Ph BOXMe 2 ZnOR(HOR) complex under one set of conditions or an unprecedented σ-adduct Ph BOXMe 2 ZnOR(H-SiR'3 ) under other conditions. Saturation kinetics provide evidence for the latter species, in support of the hypothesis that σ-bond metathesis reactions involving four-centered electrocyclic 2σ-2σ transition states are preceded by σ-adducts.

The Effect of Substituents on the Formation of Silyl [PSiP] Pincer Cobalt(I) Complexes and Catalytic Application in Both Nitrogen Silylation and Alkene Hydrosilylation

Four different [PSiP]-pincer ligands L1-L4 ((2-Ph₂PC₆H₄)₂SiHR (R = H (L1) and Ph (L2)) and (2-ⁱPr₂PC₆H₄)₂SiHR' (R' = Ph (L3) and H (L4)) were used to investigate the effect of substituents at P and/or Si atom of the [PSiP] pincer ligands on the formation of silyl cobalt(I) complexes by the reactions with CoMe(PMe₃)₄ via Si-H cleavage. Two penta-coordinated silyl cobalt(I) complexes, (2-Ph₂PC₆H₄)₂HSiCo(PMe₃)₂ (1) and (2-Ph₂PC₆H₄)₂PhSiCo(PMe₃)₂ (2), were obtained from the reactions of L1 and L2 with CoMe(PMe₃)₄, respectively. Under similar reaction conditions, a tetra-coordinated cobalt(I) complex (2-ⁱPr₂PC₆H₄)₂PhSiCo(PMe₃) (3) was isolated from the interaction of L3 with CoMe(PMe₃)₄. It was found that, only in the case of ligand L4, silyl dinitrogen cobalt(I) complex 4, [(2-ⁱPr₂PC₆H₄)₂HSiCo(N₂)(PMe₃)], was formed. Our results indicate that the increasing of electron cloud density at the Co center is beneficial for the formation of a dinitrogen cobalt complex because the large electron density at Co center leads to the enhancement of the π-backbonding from cobalt to the coordinated N₂. It was found that silyl dinitrogen cobalt(I) complex 4 is an effective catalyst for catalytic transformation of dinitrogen into silylamine. Among these four silyl cobalt(I) complexes, complex 1 is the best catalyst for hydrosilylation of alkenes with excellent regioselectivity. For aromatic alkenes, catalyst 1 provided Markovnikov products, while for aliphatic alkenes, anti-Markovnikov products could be obtained. Both catalytic reaction mechanisms were proposed and discussed. The molecular structures of complexes 1-4 were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Hydrogenolysis of Polysilanes Catalyzed by Low-Valent Nickel Complexes

The dehydrogenation of organosilanes (R_x SiH_4-x ) under the formation of Si-Si bonds is an intensively investigated process leading to oligo- or polysilanes. The reverse reaction is little studied. To date, the hydrogenolysis of Si-Si bonds requires very harsh conditions and is very unselective, leading to multiple side products. Herein, we describe a new catalytic hydrogenation of oligo- and polysilanes that is highly selective and proceeds under mild conditions. New low-valent nickel hydride complexes are used as catalysts and secondary silanes, RR'SiH₂ , are obtained as products in high purity.

Proximity Enforced Agostic Interactions Involving Closed-Shell Coinage Metal Ions

A proximity enforcing diarylsilane ligand is reported, which gives rise to unusual Si-H···M interactions with the d¹⁰ metal ions Cu⁺ and Ag⁺ upon complexation. These interactions are studied in detail both experimentally and computationally and can be classified to be weakly agostic in nature for the Si-H···Cu interaction. The Si-H···Ag interaction has more signatures of an electrostatic contact.

Entrapment of THF-Stabilized Iridacyclic IrIII Silylenes from Double H-Si Bond Activation and H2 Elimination

The reaction of H₃ SiR (R=Ph, nBu) with cationic η₅ -C₅ Me₅ - (Cp*) and benzo[h]quinolinyl-based iridacycle [1 b]⁺ gives rise to new [(IrH)→SiRH₂ ]⁺ adducts. In the presence of THF these adducts readily undergo elimination of H₂ gas at subambient temperature to form THF-stabilized metallacyclic Ir^III silylene complexes, which were characterized in situ by NMR spectroscopy, trapped in minute amounts by reactive crystallization, and structurally characterized by XRD. Theoretical investigations (static DFT-D reaction-energy profiling, ETS-NOCV) support the promoting role of THF in the H₂ elimination step and the consolidation of the Ir-to-Si interaction in the spontaneous (ΔG<0) formation of Ir silylenes in the presence of THF. Mechanistic insights indicate that the Ir silylene species arising from the [1 b]⁺ /phenylsilane system are relevant catalytic species in the hydrodefluorination of fluoroalkanes.

The mechanistic investigations of photochemical carbonyl elimination and oxidative addition reactions of (η5-C5H5)M(CO)3, (M = Mn and Re) complexes

We used computational methods to explore the mechanisms of the photochemical decarbonylation and the Si–H bond activation reaction of the group 7 organometallic compounds, η⁵-CpM(CO)₃ (M = Mn and Re). The energies of both conical intersections and the intersystem crossings, which play a decisive role in these photo-activation reactions, are determined. Both intermediates and transition states in either the singlet or triplet states are also computed to furnish a mechanistic interpretation of the whole reaction paths. In the case of Mn, four types of reaction pathways (path I–path IV) that lead to the final insertion product are examined. The theoretical findings suggest that at the higher-energy band (295 nm) the singlet-state channel is predominant. As a result, the conical intersection mechanism (i.e., path I) prevails. However, at the lower-energy band (325 nm) the triplet-state channel occurs. In such a situation, the intersystem crossing mechanism (i.e., path IV) can successfully explain its CO-photodissociation mechanism. In the case of Re, on the other hand, the theoretical evidence reveals that only the singlet state-channel is superior. In consequence, the conical intersection mechanism (i.e., path V) can more effectively explain its photochemical decarbonylation mechanism. These theoretical analyses agree well with the available experimental observations.

The theoretical works suggest that under UV photoirradiation, η⁵-CpMn(CO)₃ follows either the conical intersection mechanism or the intersystem crossing mechanism to obtain the final oxidative addition product. However, η⁵-CpRe(CO)₃ proceeds only the singlet state channel.

Trajectory of Approach of a Zinc-Hydrogen Bond to Transition Metals

Through a dramatic advance in the coordination chemistry of the zinc-hydride bond, we describe the trajectory for the approach of this bond to transition metals. The dynamic reaction coordinate was interrogated through analysis of a series of solid state structures and is one in which the TM-H-Zn angle becomes increasingly acute as the TM-Zn distance decreases. Parallels may be drawn with the oxidative addition of boron-hydrogen and silicon-hydrogen bonds to transition metal centers.

Dynamic, Reversible Oxidative Addition of Highly Polar Bonds to a Transition Metal

The combination of Pt⁰ complexes and indium trihalides leads to compounds that form equilibria in solution between their In-X oxidative addition (OA) products (Pt^II indyl complexes) and their metal-only Lewis pair (MOLP) isomers (L_nPt→InX₃). The position of the equilibria can be altered reversibly by changing the solvent, while the equilibria can be reversibly and irreversibly driven toward the MOLP products by addition of further donor ligands. The results mark the first observation of an equilibrium between MOLP and OA isomers, as well as the most polar bond ever observed to undergo reversible oxidative addition to a metal complex. In addition, we present the first structural characterization of MOLP and oxidative addition isomers of the same compound. The relative energies of the MOLP and OA isomers were calculated by DFT methods, and the possibility of solvent-mediated isomerization is discussed.
