The properties of convergence eye movements evoked from the rostral and caudal lateral suprasylvian cortex in the cat

Receptive field properties and sensitivity to edges defined by motion in the postero-lateral lateral suprasylvian (PLLS) area of the cat

The present study investigated the spatial properties of cells in the postero-lateral lateral suprasylvian (PLLS) area of the cat and assessed their sensitivity to edges defined by motion. A total of one hundred and seventeen (117) single units were isolated. First, drifting sinusoidal gratings were used to assess the spatial properties of the cells' receptive fields and to determine their spatial frequency tuning functions. Second, random-dot kinematograms were used to create illusory edges by drifting textured stimuli (i.e. a horizontal bar) against a similarly textured but static background. Almost all the cells recorded in PLLS (96.0%) were binocular, and a substantial majority of receptive fields (79.2%) were end-stopped. Most units (81.0%) had band-pass spatial frequency tuning functions and responded optimally to low spatial frequencies (mean spatial frequency: 0.08 c./degree). The remaining units (19.0%) were low-pass. All the recorded cells responded vigorously to edges defined by motion. The vast majority (96.0%) of cells responded optimally to large texture elements; approximately half the cells (57.3%) also responded to finer texture elements. Moreover, 38.5% of the cells were selective to the width of the bar (i.e., the distance between the leading and the trailing edges). Finally, some (9.0%) cells responded in a transient fashion to leading and to trailing edges. In conclusion, cells in the PLLS area are low spatial frequency analyzers that are sensitive to texture and to the distance between edges defined by motion.

The Near Response: The Contributions of Kenji Ohtsuka, MD

Kenji Ohtsuka, MD and his colleagues at the Sapporo Medical University have investigated the central organization of the near response with anatomical and neurophysiologic studies in cats. Based on their data and clinical observations, they proposed that the rostral pole of the superior colliculus has a critical role in the control of accommodation, vergence, and fixation. Although the central pathways have yet to be fully worked out, the contributions of Dr. Ohtsuka, who died in 2005, have laid an important foundation in the understanding of these functions.

Temporal interactions in direction-selective complex cells of area 18 and the posteromedial lateral suprasylvian cortex (PMLS) of the cat

Temporal interactions in direction-sensitive complex cells in area 18 and the posteromedial lateral suprasylvian cortex (PMLS) were studied using a reverse correlation method. Reverse correlograms to combinations of two temporally separated motion directions were examined and compared in the two areas. A comparison to the first-order reverse correlograms allowed us to identify nonlinear suppression or facilitation due to pairwise combinations of motion directions. Results for area 18 and PMLS were very different. Area 18 showed a single type of nonlinear behavior: similar directions facilitated and opposite directions suppressed spike probability. This effect was most pronounced for motion steps that followed each other immediately and decreased with increasing delay between steps. In PMLS, the picture was much more diverse. Some cells exhibited nonlinear interactions, that were opposite to those in area 18 (facilitation for opposite directions and suppression for similar ones), while the majority did not show a systematic interaction profile. We conclude that nonlinear second-order reverse correlation characteristics reveal different functional properties, despite similarities in the first-order reverse correlation profiles. Directional interactions in time revealed optimal integration of similar directions in area 18, but motion opponency--at least in some cells--in PMLS.

Visual cortical contribution to open-loop and feed-back control of convergence eye movements in the cat

Open-loop and closed loop controls in convergence eye movement have been reported by human psycho-physical studies. To investigate the visual cortical involvement in open-loop convergence eye movement, we trained a cat to elicit anticipatory convergence (convergence eye movement before the onset of target movement) by using an approaching visual target with a preceding alarm signal. After 1-2 weeks of training, anticipatory convergence was observed in more than half of the trials in seven cats. The frequency of occurrence of anticipatory convergence was significantly decreased after electrocoagulation in the convergence-related region of the lateral suprasylvian (LS) area, an extrastriate visual cortex of the cat. On the other hand, the localized injection of Muscimol, a GABA-A agonist, reduced visually evoked convergence, but caused no significant effects to anticipatory convergence. These differential results suggest that the LS plays a role in both open-loop and feed-back control of convergence eye movement, and a GABA-A sensitive subregion is involved in the feed-back control of convergence eye movement.

Convergence eye movements evoked by microstimulation of the rostral superior colliculus in the cat

Results of our previous studies suggest that the circumscribed area in the rostral superior colliculus (SC) of the cat is involved in the control of accommodation. Accommodation is closely linked with vergence eye movements. In this study, we investigated whether or not vergence eye movements are evoked by microstimulation of the rostral SC in the cat. In addition, we studied the effect of chemical inhibition of the rostral SC on visually guided vergence eye movements. This study was conducted on three cats, weighing 2.5-3.5 kg. The animals were trained to carry out visually guided saccade and convergence tasks. Eye movements were measured using search coils placed on both eyes. We recorded eye movements evoked by microstimulation of the rostral SC in the alert cats. Muscimol was injected into the rostral SC, and the effect of SC inactivation on visually guided vergence eye movements was investigated. Convergence eye movements were evoked by low-current stimulation (< 30 microA) of a circumscribed area in the intermediate layers of the rostral SC on one side. Spontaneous saccades were interrupted by the stimulation of the low-threshold area for evoking convergence. Visually guided convergence eye movements were severely diminished by the injection of muscimol into the low-threshold area for evoking convergence of the SC. The rostral SC is related to the control of vergence eye movements as well as accommodation. The rostral SC may be involved in the functional linkage between accommodation, convergence and visual fixation.
