Immobilization of ethylenesulfide on silica surface through sol–gel process and some thermodynamic data of divalent cation interactions

Synthesis and swelling peculiarities of new hydrogels based on the macromolecular reaction of anhydride copolymers with γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane

This work describes the synthesis and macromolecular reactions of maleic anhydride (MA)-acrylamide (AAm) binary and MA-vinyl acetate (VA)- AAm ternary reactive copolymers with γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) as a polyfunctional crosslinker. Swelling parameters such as the start-time of the hydrogel-formation, initial rate of swelling, swelling rate constant, equilibrium swelling, and equilibrium water content (EWC) are determined for polymers/APTS/water systems with certain copolymer/crosslinker ratios (1.4/1 and 9/1). The formation of a hyperbranched network structure by the fragmentation of the side-chain reactive groups in the systems studied has also been confirmed by the Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) method.

Immobilization of ethylenesulfide on babassu coconut epicarp and mesocarp for divalent cation sorption

A new synthetic methodology route consisted in reacting the natural babassu coconut mesocarp (BCM) and babassu coconut epicarp (BCE) with ethylenesufide, for adding basic sulfur centers in pendant chains that possess high potential activity for coordinating divalent cations from aqueous solution. All biomaterials were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared (IR), (13)C NMR and thermogravimetry. The sulfur elemental analysis gave 2.00+/-0.05 and 8.67+/-0.01% for BCES and BCMS, which correspond to 0.60+/-0.01 and 2.71+/-0.01 mmol of this element per each gram of BCE and BCM, to confer a degree of functionalization of 20.2+/-0.07 and 86.7+/-0.01 mg g(-1). This synthesis enabled from IR weak SH band at 2544 cm(-1) due to the incorporation of the reagent into the structure. The basic centers favor copper sorption with increasing pH from 2 to 6 observed by a batchwise methodology and the data obtained from the chosen pH 6 were adjusted to Freundlich and Langmuir models, favoring fit for the latter equation. The kinetics of sorption was established at 30 min for both biopolymers with a pseudo-second-order model.

A regenerable ruthenium tetraammine nitrosyl complex immobilized on a modified silica gel surface: preparation and studies of nitric oxide release and nitrite-to-NO conversion

Silica gel bearing isonicotinamide groups was prepared by further modification of 3-aminopropyl-functionalized silica by a reaction with isonicotinic acid and 1,3-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide to yield 3-isonicotinamidepropyl-functionalized silica gel (ISNPS). This support was characterized by means of infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and specific surface area. The ISNPS was used to immobilize the [Ru(NH(3))(4)SO(3)] moiety by reaction with trans-[Ru(NH(3))(4)(SO(2))Cl]Cl, yielding [Si(CH(2))(3)(isn)Ru(NH(3))(4)(SO(3))]. The related immobilized [Si(CH(2))(3)(isn)Ru(NH(3))(4)(L)](3+/2+) (L=SO(2), SO(2-)(4), OH(2), and NO) complexes were prepared and characterized by means of UV-vis and IR spectroscopy, as well as by cyclic voltammetry. Syntheses of the nitrosyl complex were performed by reaction of the immobilized ruthenium ammine [Si(CH(2))(3)(isn)Ru(NH(3))(4)(OH(2))](2+) with nitrite in acid or neutral (pH 7.4) solution. The similar results obtained in both ways indicate that the aqua complex was able to convert nitrite into coordinated nitrosyl. The reactivity of [Si(CH(2))(3)(isn)Ru(NH(3))(4)(NO)](3+) was investigated in order to evaluate the nitric oxide (NO) release. It was found that, upon light irradiation or chemical reduction, the immobilized nitrosyl complex was able to release NO, generating the corresponding Ru(III) or Ru(II) aqua complexes, respectively. The NO material could be regenerated from these NO-depleted materials obtained photochemically or by reduction. Regeneration was done by reaction with nitrite in aqueous solution (pH 7.4). Reduction-regeneration cycles were performed up to three times with no significant leaching of the ruthenium complex.

Natural vermiculite as an exchanger support for heavy cations in aqueous solution

The natural highly charged lamellar silicate vermiculite was investigated as an exchanger matrix in doubly distilled water solution to exchange magnesium inside the lamella with the heavy cations copper, nickel, cobalt, and lead at the solid/liquid interface. The extension of each exchange reaction was dependent on time of reaction, pH, and cation concentration. The maximum time presented the following order Pb2+ < Ni2+ < Cu2+ < Co2+, which corresponds to 12, 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively. The best performance was observed for nickel, as represented by the exchange capacity Nf, which gave values 0.59, 0.76, 0.84, and 0.93 mmol g(-1) for Pb2+ < Co2+ < Cu2+ < Ni2+, respectively. This capacity is dependent on pH interval variation from 1 to 9, being significantly increased in alkaline condition. The isotherm data were adjusted to a modified Langmuir equation and from the data the spontaneous Gibbs free energy was calculated. Linear correlations were obtained through Gibbs free energy or the maximum capacity against the cationic radius plot, with the lowest values for the largest cation lead. An exponential correlation was also observed for the maximum capacity versus enthalpy of hydration plot, indicating a difficulty of the less hydrated cation, lead, in exchanging with magnesium inside the lamellar space, as suggested by the proposed mechanism. The saturated matrices with cations presented a decrease in interlayer distance in comparison with the original vermiculite, which can be related to the hydrated phases, characteristic for each cation, with a lowest value for lead.

Hybrid aniline/silica xerogel cation adsorption and thermodynamics of interaction

Aniline groups chemically immobilized on silica through the sol-gel process were employed to extract divalent nickel and manganese from aqueous solutions at room temperature. The maximum adsorption capacity of the xerogel was studied from adsorption isotherms using a batch technique. The isotherms obtained were adjusted following the Langmuir equation. The xerogel adsorbent appears to have better affinity for nickel than manganese. From calorimetric titration, thermodynamic data on cation/nitrogen basic atom interaction in the solid/liquid interface were determined. The enthalpic values, -0.46 +/- 0.02 and -.029 +/- 0.02 kJ mol(-1) for nickel and manganese, respectively, are in agreement with the low availability of the basic nitrogen atom on the aniline group and also the possible steric hindrance of the phenyl group bonded to nitrogen. However, thermodynamics indicated the existence of favorable conditions for such cation-nitrogen interactions.
