Abstract
The complex physiology of aging involves a number of molecular and biochemical events, manifested as signs of senescence. Japanese quail is a very unique and advantageous model to study the signs and symptoms of senescence in the central and peripheral modules of HPG axis. In the present study, we have investigated the age dependent variations in hypothalamic deep brain photoreceptors (DBPs), central GnRH-I/II-GnIH-Mel1cR system, testicular GnRH-GnIH system, testicular steroidogenic genes and proteins, androgen receptor (AR) and serum testosterone level in quail of different age groups [3-wk (sexually immature), 6-wk (sexually mature and crossed the puberty), 16-wk (adult, sexually active and showing full breeding phase) and 144-wk (aged)]. Findings of our present study showed the differential expression of these genes/proteins in quail of different age groups. The low levels of the DBPs, GnRH-I, GnIH, Mel1cR in hypothalamus and GnRH-II in midbrain, significantly decreased testicular GnRH/GnRH-R-GnIH, steroidogenic genes/proteins and serum testosterone were observed in immature quail. The significantly increased expression of opsins in the DBPs, GnRH-I, GnIH, Mel1cR in hypothalamus and GnRH-II in midbrain influences the testicular GnRH-GnIH and stimulate the testicular steroidogenesis in mature and adult quail. In aged quail, the significantly decreased levels of hypothalamic DBPs, GnRH-I, GnIH, Mel1cR and midbrain GnRH-II modulates the testicular GnRH-GnIH and further suppresses the genes/proteins involved in steroidogenesis and results in reduced serum testosterone. Hence, it can be concluded from our findings that the testicular steroidogenesis and its neuroendocrine regulation varies with age, in Japanese quail.

Abstract
Certain special biological characteristics of Japanese quails ( Coturnix coturnix japonica) could enable quicker and less expensive laboratory experiments than similar studies using mice or chickens. Moreover, due to some physiological similarities with humans, quails have been recognized as an ideal laboratory model for experiments in some fields such as immunology, endocrinology, and reproductive biology. The aim of this study was to acquire normal ultrasonographic images of reproductive organs of female Japanese quails in order to facilitate laboratory experiments on reproductive biology and to determine a non-invasive in-life alternative to carcass analysis. Thirty female Japanese quails of different ages were used for ultrasound scanning of ovaries, follicles, ova, oviducts and eggs. In addition, five quails were euthanized for experiments using a direct standoff imaging technique. It was possible to identify different sizes of follicles ranging from small white follicles (0.14 cm) to large yellow follicles (2.57 cm), post-ovulatory follicles (POFs), ova at various stages of development, oviducts, and also eggs within the oviducts. These findings demonstrate that ultrasound scanning of female Japanese quail reproductive organs might be a beneficial diagnostic tool for applications such as studying reproductive physiology, anticipating the beginning or the end of the breeding season, detecting any pathological disorders easily, and identifying non-productive females which could lead to more cost-efficient laboratory procedures.

Abstract
Reproductive failure associated with aging is a well-known phenomenon. However, the mechanism by which this failure occurs in broiler breeder roosters is still unclear. A previous study conducted in our laboratory, comparing young and aging broiler breeder roosters, demonstrated an elevation in hypothalamic vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and pituitary prolactin (PRL) gene expression accompanied by a deterioration of gonadal axis function. This resulted in a decrease in semen-quality variables as roosters aged. The objective of this study was to examine the involvement of the serotonergic axis in the age-associated reproductive failure in broiler breeder roosters. Cobb roosters aged 64 wk were divided into 3 groups (n = 20 each): parachlorophenylalanine (PCPA) administration, active immunization against chicken VIP, and controls. At 69 wk of age, each group was divided into 2 equal subgroups: 1 received ovine PRL and the other served as controls. Weekly semen volume, concentration and motility, and plasma testosterone, estradiol, and PRL concentrations were examined. At the end of the experiment, roosters were euthanized, testes were weighed, and hypothalamus and pituitary were removed to assay the expression of genes encoding hypothalamic GnRH-I, pituitary FSH, pituitary LH, hypothalamic VIP, and pituitary PRL. Both PCPA administration and active immunization against chicken VIP significantly increased testis weight, semen volume, sperm concentration, ejaculation grade, plasma testosterone level, and GnRH-I, FSH and LH gene expression compared with controls (P ≤ 0.05). In addition, a decrease in plasma estradiol and PRL concentrations and VIP and PRL gene expression was observed in PCPA- and VIP-immunized birds compared with controls (P ≤ 0.05). Administration of PRL in all groups decreased gonadal axis function and semen-quality variables (P ≤ 0.05). Collectively, these results suggest that the increasing expression levels of the serotonergic axis in aging broiler breeder roosters inhibit proper gonadal function and reproductive performance. This article establishes for the first time the inhibitory role of serotonin on reproduction in aging roosters.

Abstract
In most vertebrates, production of reproductive hormones wanes with age, co-occurring with a decline in reproductive output. Measurement of these hormones can serve as a key marker of the onset of reproductive senescence. Longitudinal studies of physiological parameters in populations of free-living animals are relatively uncommon; however, we have monitored baseline concentrations of hormones for nine years in a population of Florida scrub-jays (Aphelocoma coerulescens). We hypothesized that concentrations of circulating reproductive hormones change with age, and predicted declines in reproductive hormones in the oldest jays. We found that baseline levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone (T) were relatively low in both young and old male breeders and reach their highest levels in birds aged 4-7years. Conversely, we found no age-related patterns in baseline levels of LH or estradiol in female jays. In males we determined which component of the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis is responsible for observed age-based differences, by challenging males of different ages with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH); thereby allowing assessment of pituitary and gonadal responsiveness by measuring plasma concentrations of luteinizing hormone and testosterone, respectively. The magnitude of increase in levels of both LH and T in response to GnRH challenge decreased with age in male breeders. Combined with the baseline levels, the results from the GnRH challenge suggest that younger birds have the capability to produce higher levels of reproductive hormone, whereas the old birds may be constrained by senescence in their ability to produce these hormones.

Abstract
Fertility of domestic roosters decreases at ≈ 50 wk of age. In a previous study on aging white leghorn roosters, low fertility was accompanied by low levels of both hypothalamic vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and pituitary prolactin (PRL) mRNA expression; however, their role in aging broiler breeder rooster reproduction is still unclear. In this study we compared reproductive activities of young (35-wk-old) and aging (73-wk-old) broiler breeder roosters. Weekly semen volume; concentration and ejaculation grade; and concentrations of plasma testosterone, estradiol, and PRL were examined. Every other week, 10 roosters from each group were euthanized, their testes weighed, and hypothalamus and pituitary removed to determine mRNA expression of hypothalamic GnRH-I, pituitary FSH, pituitary LH, hypothalamic VIP, and pituitary PRL. Aging roosters had significantly lower testis weight and semen volume, sperm concentration, ejaculation grade and plasma testosterone and low hypothalamic GnRH-I, pituitary FSH, and pituitary LH mRNA expression than young roosters (P ≤ 0.05). Aging roosters had higher concentrations of plasma estradiol and PRL and higher hypothalamic VIP and pituitary PRL mRNA expression than young roosters (P ≤ 0.05). We suggest that PRL, which is known to inhibit the gonadal axis, and its releasing factor, VIP, play an important role in the reproductive failure associated with age in broiler breeder roosters.

Abstract
Present work was undertaken to describe (i) age dependent (prepuberal-3, 4, 5 and 6 weeks old, puberal and actively laying 8 and 12 weeks old and aged 78 weeks old) (ii) photoperiodic response dependent (photosensitive and photorefractory) and sex steroid dependent (estradiol benzoate and its antagonist tamoxifen treated) variation in the ovary and shell gland activity of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). Further, in view of the role of neurohypophysial peptide arginine vasotocin (AVT) in many physiological processes including age/reproduction related oviposition, expression of ir-AVT was also monitored in the ovary of quail. All the parameters associated with histodifferentiation increased rapidly during the developing stages followed by a decrease in old age, which also increased in reproductively quiescent photorefractory birds following estradiol treatment and decreased in reproductively active photosensitive quail following tamoxifen treatment. Using AVT-specific antibody, expression of immunoreactive AVT (ir-AVT) observed in the ovary of photosensitive quail was not detected in the photorefractory quail. However, administration of estrogen in the photorefractory quail stimulated the growth and activity of ovary and shell gland also resulted in the expression of ovarian ir-AVT. On the other hand, tamoxifen eliminated the localization of ir-AVT in the ovary of photosensitive quail in addition to a decrease in the shell gland protein and alkaline phosphatase activity. It is concluded that estrogen not only affects the growth and differentiation of ovary and oviduct including shell gland but also regulates the expression of ovarian AVT. It is also suggested that in addition to reported paracrine effect of AVT in the shell gland of Japanese quail for oviposition, ovarian AVT may also affect ovarian function (ovulation), and in part, this regulation is estrogen dependent.

Abstract
Decreasing fertility in aging domestic roosters is a well-known phenomenon. Aging is manifested by a decrease in plasma testosterone level, testis function, and spermatogenesis, resulting in a low level of fertility. The roles of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and testicular inhibin in this aging process are not clear. The effects of active immunization against VIP, inhibin, or the combination of both hormones on the reproduction of aging White Leghorn (WL) roosters were assayed. In experiment 1a, 60 White Leghorn roosters (67 wk of age) were divided into 4 groups (n = 15/group). The first group was actively immunized against VIP, the second against inhibin, the third against VIP and inhibin, and the fourth served as a control. Active immunization against VIP decreased semen quality parameters, plasma steroid levels, and gene expression of gonadotropin-releasing hormone-I (GnRH-I), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), LH receptor, VIP, and prolactin (Prl). Immunization against inhibin increased some of the semen quality parameters and FSH mRNA gene expression but decreased inhibin gene expression. In experiment 1b, at 94 wk of age, we took the actively immunized against VIP group and the control group and divided them into 2 subgroups (n = 7 or 8): the first group was injected with 1 mg of ovine Prl (oPrl) daily for 7 d, and the second group served as a control. Administration of oPrl to previously VIP-immunized birds significantly elevated semen quality parameters. We suggest that VIP, Prl, and inhibin have an important effect on the reproductive axis in aging roosters. Active immunization against VIP-depressed reproductive activity and Prl administration restored their reproduction, indicating that both VIP and Prl are essential for reproduction in aging roosters. Immunization against inhibin improved FSH mRNA gene expression, suggesting a negative role of inhibin on FSH secretion in aging roosters. Not all semen quality parameters increased significantly after immunization against inhibin, even though FSH mRNA gene expression increased, suggesting interference in testicular function in aging roosters.

Abstract
Sex steroid hormone receptors play a central role in the regulation of reproduction in male chickens. In this work, we evaluated by histomorphometric methods and Western blot analysis changes in the number of the different cell populations and in the content of sex steroid hormone receptors in testes from immature (1.5-month-old), mature (12-month-old), and aged (48-month-old) chickens. The number of Sertoli cells, germ cells, and Leydig cells per area of testicular tissue markedly changed according to chicken age. The highest number of Sertoli and Leydig cells was found in testes of immature chickens, with a dramatic decrease in those of mature chickens; however, the number of germ cells was the highest in mature chickens in comparison with other ages. The content of androgen receptor diminished in testes of mature and aged animals in comparison with that of immature chickens. In contrast, the content of estrogen receptor alpha and progesterone receptor was higher in testes of mature animals than in other ages. Both progesterone receptor isoforms were expressed in a similar proportion in testes of immature and mature animals. Interestingly, progesterone receptor isoform A was the predominant isoform in aged animals. These results suggest that there are marked age-dependent changes in chicken testes histology and in sex steroid hormone receptors content that should contribute to sex steroid hormone actions, in this tissue throughout the lifespan of chickens.

Abstract
We have reported earlier that estrogen receptor (ER) alpha-transactivation domain (TAD) interacted with four nuclear proteins of 100 kD, 80 kD, 68 kD, and 50 kD of mouse brain and identified 68 kD as p68 RNA helicase and 50 kD as beta-tubulin. In this paper, we describe the identification of 80 kD nuclear protein as metastasis associated protein 1 (MTA1) and its interaction and expression in the brain of aging mice. Far-Western blotting and immunoprecipitation data revealed lower interaction of MTA1 in old than adult mice of both sexes. Furthermore, adult male showed lower expression of protein as compared to adult female. Altogether these findings suggest that age-dependent decrease in the expression of MTA1 and its interaction with ERalpha-TAD may influence the estrogen-mediated signaling pathway during aging of mouse brain.

Abstract
Broiler chicks that traverse a T-maze quickly to reinstate contact with their companions (HP, high performers) are known to grow faster, are more social, and have a reduced plasma corticosterone response to acute stress than slower chicks (LP, low performers). High-performing quail from a line selected for reduced rather than exaggerated (high-stress) adrenocortical stress responsiveness also show enhanced female reproductive performance when compared with LP-high-stress quail. Herein, time courses of male sexual development were evaluated in genetically unremarkable quail that were categorized at 2 d of age as HP or LP in the T-maze. Body weight, cloacal gland volume (CVOL), proportion of individuals that produced cloacal gland foam, intensity of foam production, and CVOL relative to BW (RCVOL) were determined weekly from 4 to 10 wk of age, and again at 22 wk, along with absolute and BW-adjusted testes weight. Although CVOL and RCVOL were initially similar in both T-maze groups, both variables were greater (P < 0.05) in HP than in LP quail between 6 and 10 wk of age. High-performing birds also showed a trend (P < 0.1) of greater cloacal gland foam than their LP counterparts from 5 to 7 wk. From 8 wk on, all birds were in foam production. Intensity of foam production results generally mimicked those found for CVOL and RCVOL. Body weights were higher (P < 0.05) in HP than LP quail from 5 to 7 wk. No T-maze group differences were found in any of the variables at 22 wk of age. The results suggest that rapid negotiation of the T-maze is associated with accelerated growth and puberty in male quail, although the enhanced reproductive development of HP males does not remain extant in aged adults.

Abstract
Avian species show a remarkable diversity in lifespan. The differing lifespan patterns are found across a number of birds, in spite of higher body temperature and apparent increased metabolic rate. These characteristics make study of age-related changes of great interest, especially for understanding the biology of aging associated with surprisingly long lifespan in some birds. Our studies have focused on a short-lived avian model, the Japanese quail in order to describe reproductive aging and the neuroendocrine characteristics leading to reproductive senescence. Biomarkers of aging used in mammalian species include telomere length, oxidative damage, and selected metabolic indicators. These markers provide confirming evidence that the long-lived birds appear to age more slowly. A corollary area of interest is that of immune function and aging. Immune responses have been studied in selected wild birds and there has been a range of studies that have considered the effects of stress in wild and domestic species. Our laboratory studies have specifically tested response to immune challenge relative to aging in the quail model and these studies indicate that there is an age-related change in the qualitative aspects of the response. However, there are also intriguing differences in the ability of the aging quail to respond that differ from mammalian data. Finally, another approach to understanding aging is to attempt to develop or test strategies that may extend lifespan and presumably health. One area of great interest has been to consider the effect of calorie restriction, which is a treatment shown to extend lifespan in a variety of species. This approach is routinely used in domestic poultry as a means for extending reproductive function and enhancing health. Our data indicate that moderate calorie restriction has beneficial effects, and that physiological and endocrine responses reflect these benefits.

Abstract
Quantitative in vitro autoradiography was used to measure specific mu and delta opioid receptor densities in regions of the Japanese quail, Coturnix japonica, brain that regulates reproductive endocrine and behavioral responses to determine the possible involvement of the opioid system in reproductive decline seen during aging. Densities were measured in selected brain regions of young sexually active (YAM), young photoregressed (YPM), old reproductively senescent (OIM) male, young active (YF), and old senescent female (OF) Japanese quail. Medial and lateral septum (SM, SL), medial preoptic area (POM), and n. intercollicularis (ICo) were of particular interest for reproductive responses. Similar to previous observations, mu and delta opioid receptors showed differential distributions in the areas measured. Some age-related changes were observed, with lower SM mu receptor densities in aged males (OIM) than females or young males (YAM). Densities of mu receptors in the POM and in other areas examined did not vary with sex or age. Similarly, OIM males had lower densities of delta receptors in the SM than young males (YAM and YPM); POM delta receptor densities were also low in OIM males compared to the YPM males, and YAM males were intermediate. Interestingly, photoregressed males (YPM) had higher SL delta receptor densities than any other group. Thus there were age-related differences detected in mu receptor densities among groups in the SM of OIM relative to other groups; and the mu and delta receptor densities did not differ in females with brain region. Additionally for delta receptors specifically, YF and OF did not differ from OIM for any brain region and similarly had lower densities of delta receptors compared to YAM males. These data provide support for regional differences in opioid receptor distribution and for age- and sex-related differences in delta opioid receptor densities. The direction of change presents an interesting dichotomy in that, compared to young active males, delta opioid receptor densities increased with loss of reproductive function in the YPM, whereas receptor densities decreased in the OIM. Plasma androgen levels were relatively low in both these groups compared to the young active males. This observation suggests that there is an age-related loss in the ability of this receptor system to respond to circulating and centrally produced steroid hormones in the POM and in some septal regions, compared to young animals that are responding to environmental cues. Furthermore, these data support an active role of the opioid peptide system in the inhibition of the reproductive axis in photoregression.

Abstract
During aging, the decline of neuroendocrine, endocrine, and behavioral components of reproduction ultimately leads to reproductive failure. These studies considered both neuroendocrine and behavioral aspects of reproductive aging in Japanese quail, using chronological age and reproductive status to separate animals into experimental groups. In Study I, age-related changes in the gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH-I) system were investigated and a sharp decrease was observed in GnRH-I concentration in the median eminence of aging animals of both sexes, whereas preoptic-lateral septal region GnRH-I concentrations declined only in aging males. Immunohistochemistry confirmed these findings since aging females retained, whereas males lost GnRH-I cells. Functional changes were assessed by in vitro incubation of parasaggittal hypothalamic slices collected from young and old inactive males and females. Results showed reduced baseline GnRH-I release and diminished response to norepinephrine (NE). Deteriorating fertility also correlated with decreased male sexual behavior and loss of aromatase immunoreactive (AROM-ir) neurons in the medial, but not lateral preoptic nucleus (POA). Sexual behavior and AROM-ir were restored with exogenous testosterone, which was associated with increased cell size in the medial POA. Comparison of cell size and number of AROM-ir cells showed that aged sexually active males had fewer, larger AROM-ir cells when compared to young males, suggesting neuroplasticity of specific neural systems and a critical role of estradiol in maintaining reproductive function.

Abstract
The time course of sexual development in male quail from lines selected for either a reduced (low stress, LS) or an exaggerated (high stress, HS) plasma corticosterone response to brief restraint was determined. Sexual development was assessed by examination of cloacal gland area (CAREA) and volume (CVOL), proportion of individuals that produced cloacal gland foam, and the intensity of cloacal gland foam production (CFP) at 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 14, and 16 wk of age. These intervals encompass ages during which growing, photostimulated quail would be expected to evolve from being totally prepubescent to well into adulthood. Testes weight (TW) and the proportion of individuals that had achieved a combined TW of 500 mg (PI500) were also measured at 6 and 16 wk of age. Mean CAREA and CVOL were similar in LS and HS quail at 4 wk of age. Beginning at 5 wk of age and thereafter, CAREA was greater (P < 0.05) in LS than in HS quail. Similarly, beginning at 6 wk of age and thereafter, CVOL was greater (P < 0.05) in LS than in HS quail. More LS than HS birds also expressed foam at 4 (P < 0.05), 5 (P = 0.15), and 6 wk (P < 0.05) of age. From 8 wk on, all birds were in foam production. CFP results mimicked those found for CAREA and CVOL in that LS quail tended toward higher CFP values than HS quail at all intervals of measurement. TW were higher (P < 0.02) in LS than HS quail when data from the 2 ages at which testes were harvested were combined. At 6 wk of age, the LS and HS birds showed a PI500 line difference (P < 0.08) of 1.0 and 0.91, respectively; by 16 wk, all birds exhibited a maximum PI500. The results suggest that 1) selection for reduced adrenocortical responsiveness in Coturnix is accompanied by an accelerated onset of puberty in males, and 2) enhanced reproductive development in LS males remains extant throughout early to middle-age adulthood.

Abstract
During embryonic development, gonadal steroid hormones (androgens and estrogens) are thought to organize the sexual differentiation of the brain in the heterogametic sexes of higher vertebrates (males in mammals, females in birds). Brain differentiation of the homogametic sexes is thought to proceed by default, not requiring sex hormones for sex-specific organization. In gallinaceous birds such as the Japanese quail, female brain organization is thought to develop via estrogen-dependent demasculinization of a default male brain phenotype. We performed male donor-to-female host (MF), female-to-male (FM), male-to-male (MM), and female-to-female (FF) isotopic, isochronic transplantation of the forebrain primordium in Japanese quail embryos before gonadal differentiation had occurred; brain chimeras had a forebrain (including the hypothalamus) originating exclusively from donor cells. MM, FF, and MF chimeras all showed sexual behavior governed by the genetic sex of the host. In contrast, FM chimeras (genetically female forebrain, all other tissues genetically male) showed no mounting and only rudimentary crowing behavior. Although MM, FF, MF, and FM chimeras all showed host-typical production of steroid hormones during embryonic life, only FM chimeras were hypogonadal, had atypical low levels of circulating testosterone in adulthood, and showed reduction (crowing) or absence (mounting) of reproductive behaviors. Morphological features of the medial preoptic nucleus (a sexually dimorphic brain area) also were not male-like in FM males. These data demonstrate a brain-intrinsic, genetically determined component that organizes the sex-typical production of gonadal hormones in adulthood and call for a reevaluation of the mechanisms underlying brain sexual differentiation in other higher-vertebrate species.

Abstract
During aging, the male Japanese quail exhibits a loss of fertility, increased morphological abnormalities in the testes, and a higher incidence of Sertoli cell tumors. Although there is a coincident loss of reproductive behavior, plasma androgen levels remain high until testicular regression occurs in association with senescence. The purpose of this study was to compare mean specific binding of chicken luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) as a measure of testicular receptors during identified stages during aging. Males were categorized according to age (young = 9 months, middle aged = 24 months, or old = 36+ months) and sexual behavior (active or inactive). Testicular samples were collected immediately after perfusion with 4% paraformaldehyde from the following groups: young active (n = 8), young photoregressed (n = 5), young photoregressed plus testosterone implant (n = 4), middle-aged active (n = 8), middle-aged inactive (n = 4), old inactive (n = 5), and old inactive plus testosterone implant (n = 6). A crude plasma membrane fraction was prepared from the testes of each bird and an aliquot deriving from 10 mg of testicular tissue was used for binding assay. Specific binding of labeled LH or FSH was expressed as percentage of total radioactive hormone. Results showed significant (P < 0.05) age-related decreases in both FSH and LH receptor numbers. The highest FSH binding was found in young and middle-aged active males, with low binding in old inactive males. Testicular LH binding decreased during aging, with a sharp decrease in middle-aged males, which was similar to old males. Testosterone implants weakly stimulated FSH and LH binding in old males. Both LH and FSH binding decreased in photoregressed young males. However, testosterone implants stimulated increased LH binding, but did not affect FSH binding in young photoregressed males. These results provide evidence for separate regulation of testicular LH and FSH receptors, with testosterone stimulation of LH receptor, but not FSH receptor number in young males. However, during aging there appears to be a loss of this response, potentially because of the reduced efficacy of testosterone stimulation, thereby implying a diminished capacity for response with aging.

Abstract
The biogenic amine serotonin [5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)] has received considerable attention for its role in behavioral phenomena throughout a broad range of invertebrate and vertebrate taxa. Acute 5-HT infusion decreases the likelihood of crayfish to retreat from dominant opponents. The present study reports the biochemical and behavioral effects resulting from chronic treatment with 5-HT-modifying compounds delivered for up to 5 weeks via silastic tube implants. High performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection (HPLC-ED) confirmed that 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine (5,7-DHT) effectively reduced 5-HT in all central nervous system (CNS) areas, except brain, while a concurrent accumulation of the compound was observed in all tissues analyzed. Unexpectedly, two different rates of chronic 5-HT treatment did not increase levels of the amine in the CNS. Behaviorally, 5,7-DHT treated crayfish exhibited no significant differences in measures of aggression. Although treatment with 5-HT did not elevate 5-HT content in the CNS, infusion at a slow rate caused animals to escalate more quickly while 5-HT treatment at a faster rate resulted in slower escalation. 5,7-DHT is commonly used in behavioral pharmacology and the present findings suggest its biochemical properties should be more thoroughly examined. Moreover, the apparent presence of powerful compensatory mechanisms indicates our need to adopt an increasingly dynamic view of the serotonergic bases of behavior like crayfish aggression.

Abstract
A sexually dimorphic nucleus is located in the preoptic area of Japanese quail and plays a key role in the activation of male copulatory behavior. The medial preoptic nucleus (POM) is significantly larger in adult male than in adult female quail. Its volume is steroid-sensitive in adulthood and consequently decreases after castration but is restored to normal levels by a treatment with exogenous testosterone. This volumetric difference appears to result only from a sex difference in the adult hormonal milieu and is not affected by embryonic treatments that permanently modify sexual behavior (no organizational effects). In contrast, some cytoarchitectonic features of the POM such as the size of neurons in the dorso-lateral part of nucleus appear to be irreversibly affected by embryonic steroids. The POM is characterized by the presence of a wide variety of neurotransmitters, neuropeptides, and receptors and can be specifically identified by the presence of a dense cluster of aromatase-immunoreactive cells, by a high density of neurotensin-immunoreactive cells and fibers and by a dense vasotocinergic innervation. Some of these neurochemical markers of the dimorphic nucleus are themselves modulated by steroids. Many of these neurochemical changes appear to play a causal role in the control of male sexual behavior. The quail POM thus represents an excellent model for the analysis of steroid-induced brain plasticity in a behaviorally relevant context.

Abstract
Japanese quail are small galliforms that are migratory and generally live 2 to 3years in the wild. Although there is evidence for other environmental cues, they primarily respond to long daylength for regulation of reproduction. In contrast to the Common Tern, a long-lived sea bird that shows little evidence of reproductive aging, Japanese quail follow a well-defined process of aging with evidence of declining function in reproductive, metabolic, and sensory systems. Our studies focus on neuroendocrine changes associated with reproductive aging in the Japanese quail, with emphasis on the male in order to study both endocrine and behavioral components of reproduction and the process of reproductive aging.
